Abstract

Ariel, the Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey, was adopted as the fourth medium-class mission in ESA's Cosmic Vision programme to be launched in 2029. During its 4-year mission, Ariel will study what exoplanets are made of, how they formed and how they evolve, by surveying a diverse sample of about 1000 extrasolar planets, simultaneously in visible and infrared wavelengths. It is the first mission dedicated to measuring the chemical composition and thermal structures of hundreds of transiting exoplanets, enabling planetary science far beyond the boundaries of the Solar System. The payload consists of an off-axis Cassegrain telescope (primary mirror 1100 mm x 730 mm ellipse) and two separate instruments (FGS and AIRS) covering simultaneously 0.5-7.8 micron spectral range. The satellite is best placed into an L2 orbit to maximise the thermal stability and the field of regard. The payload module is passively cooled via a series of V-Groove radiators; the detectors for the AIRS are the only items that require active cooling via an active Ne JT cooler. Abstract

A new instrument dedicated to the kinetic study of low-temperature gas phase neutral-neutral reactions, including clustering processes, is presented. It combines a supersonic flow reactor with Vacuum Ultra-Violet (VUV) synchrotron photoionization time of flight mass spectrometry. A photoion-photoelectron coincidence detection scheme has been adopted to optimize the particle counting efficiency. The characteristics of the instrument are detailed along with its capabilities illustrated through a few results obtained at low temperatures (< 100 K) including a {photoionization spectrum} of n-butane, the detection of formic acid dimer formation as well as the observation of diacetylene molecules formed by the reaction between the C$_2$H radical and C$_2$H$_2$.

Abstract

With the upcoming launch of space telescopes dedicated to the study of exoplanets, the \textit{Atmospheric Remote-Sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey} (ARIEL) and the \textit{James Webb Space Telescope} (JWST), a new era is opening in the exoplanetary atmospheric explorations. However, especially in relatively cold planets around later-type stars, photochemical hazes and clouds may mask the composition of the lower part of the atmosphere, making it difficult to detect any chemical species in the troposphere or to understand whether there is a surface or not. This issue is particularly exacerbated if the goal is to study the habitability of said exoplanets and to search for biosignatures.\par This work combines innovative laboratory experiments, chemical modeling and simulated observations at ARIEL and JWST resolutions. We focus on the signatures of molecular ions that can be found in upper atmospheres above cloud decks. Our results suggest that H$_3^+$ along with H$_3$O$^+$ could be detected in the observational spectra of sub-Neptunes based on realistic mixing ratio assumption. This new parametric set may help to distinguish super-Earths with a thin atmosphere from H$_2$-dominated sub-Neptunes, to address the critical question whether a low-gravity planet around a low-mass active star is able to retain its volatile components. These ions may also constitute potential tracers to certain molecules of interest such as H$_2$O or O$_2$ to probe the habitability of exoplanets. Their detection will be an enthralling challenge for the future JWST and ARIEL telescopes.

6. Low Pressure EUV Photochemical Experiments: Insight on the Ion-Chemistry Occurring in Titan's Atmosphere

Abstract

Thanks to the \textit{Cassini} spacecraft onboard instruments, it has been known that Titan's ionospheric chemistry is complex and the molecular growth is initiated through the photolysis of the most abundant species directly in the upper atmosphere. Among the pool of chemical compounds formed by the photolysis, N-bearing species are involved in the haze formation but the chemical incorporation pathways need to be better constrained.}\\ In this work, we performed low-pressure EUV photochemical laboratory experiments. The APSIS reactor was filled with a N$_2$/CH$_4$ (90/10\%) gas mixture relevant to the upper atmosphere of Titan. The cell was irradiated by using a EUV photon source at 73.6 nm {which has been difficult to produce in the laboratory for previous studies.}. The photoproducts (both neutral and ionic species) were monitored \textit{in situ} with a quadrupole mass spectrometer. The chemical pathways are explained by confronting experimental observations and numerical predictions of the photoproducts. \\ The most interesting result in this work is that methanimine was the only stable N-bearing neutral molecule detected during the experiments and it relies on N$_2^+$ production. This experimental result is in agreement with the relatively high abundance predicted by 1D-photochemical models of Titan's atmosphere and comforts methanimine as an intermediate towards the formation of complex N-bearing organic molecules.\\ {This experiment is only testing one part of the overall chemical scheme for Titan's upper atmosphere due to the selective wavelength but demonstrates the capability to probe the chemical pathways occurring in Titan's atmosphere by minimizing bias coming from wall surface reactions.}

7. Chemistry under EUV Irradiation of H$_2$-CO-N$_2$ Gas Mixtures: Implications for Photochemistry in the Outer CSE of Evolved Stars

Abstract

{CircumStellar Envelopes (CSEs) of stars are complex chemical objects for which theoretical models encounter difficulties in elaborating a comprehensive overview of the occurring chemical processes. Along with photodissociation, ion-neutral reactions and dissociative recombination might play an important role in controlling molecular growth in outer CSEs. The aim of this work is to provide experimental insights into pathways of photochemistry-driven molecular growth within outer CSEs to draw a more complete picture of the chemical processes occurring within these molecule-rich environments. A simplified CSE environment was therefore reproduced in the laboratory through gas-phase experiments exposing relevant gas mixtures to an Extreme UltraViolet (EUV) photon source. This photochemical reactor should ultimately allow us to investigate chemical processes and their resulting products occurring under conditions akin to outer CSEs. We used a recently developed EUV lamp coupled to the APSIS photochemical cell to irradiate CSE relevant gas mixtures of H$_2$, CO and N$_2$, at one wavelength, 73.6 nm. The detection and identification of chemical species in the photochemical reactor was achieved through in-situ mass spectrometry analysis of neutral and cationic molecules. We find that exposing CO-N$_2$-H$_2$ gas mixtures to EUV photons at 73.6 nm induces photochemical reactions that yield the formation of complex, neutral and ionic species. Our work shows that N$_2$H$^+$ can be formed through photochemistry along with highly oxygenated ion molecules like HCO$^+$ in CSE environments. We also observe neutral N-rich organic species including triazole and aromatic molecules. These results confirm the suitability of our experimental setting to investigate photochemical reactions and provide fundamental insights into the mechanisms of molecular growth in the outer CSEs., Comment: new experiments have been done and the manuscript need to be updated accordingly

Abstract

In situ exploration of the planetary atmospheres requires the development of laboratory experiments to understand the molecular growth pathways initiated by photochemistry in the upper layers of the atmospheres. Major species and dominant reaction pathways are used to feed chemical network models that reproduce the chemical and physical processes of these complex environments. Energetic UV photons initiate very efficient chemistry by forming reactive species in the ionospheres of planets and satellites. Here we present a laboratory experiment based on a new photoreactor with an irradiation beam produced by high order harmonic generation of a near infra-red femtosecond laser. This type of EUV source is nowadays stable enough to enable long-lasting experiments during which a plethora of individual reactions can take place. Its high accessibility is such that chemical initial conditions can be systematically varied to investigate the complexity of the upper atmosphere of planets. In order to demonstrate the validity of our approach, we shone during 7 hours at 14 eV with a flux of 1010 photons sec-1 cm-2, a N2/CH4 (5%) based gas mixture defined by a 60 {\mu}m free mean-path. Such conditions are able to mimic the photochemistry of Titan N2 upper atmosphere. The reaction products reveal the formation of hydrocarbons and N-bearing species like dimethyldiazene (C2H6N2), the largest compound detected in this new photoreactor. This work represents an important step in the use of a EUV irradiated closed-cell chamber for the generation of photochemical analogues of Titan aerosols to better constrain the growth pathways of nitrogen incorporation into organic aerosols in the Titan atmosphere.

11. Nitrogen-containing Anions and Tholin Growth in Titan's Ionosphere: Implications for Cassini CAPS-ELS Observations

Abstract

The Cassini Plasma Spectrometer (CAPS) Electron Spectrometer (ELS) instrument onboard Cassini revealed an unexpected abundance of negative ions above 950 km in Titan's ionosphere. \textit{In situ} measurements indicated the presence of negatively charged particles with mass-over-charge ratios up to 13,800 \textit{u/q}. At present, only a handful of anions have been characterized by photochemical models, consisting mainly of C$_n$H$^-$ carbon chain and C$_{n-1}$N$^-$ cyano compounds ($n=2-6$); their formation occurring essentially through proton abstraction from their parent neutral molecules. However, numerous other species have yet to be detected and identified. Considering the efficient anion growth leading to compounds of thousands of \textit{u/q}, it is necessary to better characterize the first light species. Here, we present new negative ion measurements with masses up to 200 \textit{u/q} obtained in an \ce{N2}:\ce{CH4} dusty plasma discharge reproducing analogous conditions to Titan's ionosphere. We perform a comparison with high altitude CAPS-ELS measurements near the top of Titan's ionosphere from the T18 encounter. The main observed peaks are in agreement with the observations. However, a number of other species (\textit{e.g.} \ce{CNN-}, \ce{CHNN-}) previously not considered suggests an abundance of N-bearing compounds, containing two or three nitrogen atoms, consistent with certain adjacent doubly-bonded nitrogen atoms found in tholins. These results suggest that an N-rich incorporation into tholins may follow mechanisms including anion chemistry, further highlighting the important role of negative ions in Titan's aerosol growth., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

Abstract

Stereochemistry plays a key role in both fundamental chemical processes and the dynamics of a large set of molecular systems of importance in chemistry, medicine and biology. Predicting the chemical transformations of organic precursors in such environments requires detailed kinetic models based on laboratory data. Reactive intermediates play a critical role in constraining the models but their identification and especially their quantification remain challenging. This work demonstrates, via the study of the gas-phase autoxidation of n-pentane, a typical fuel surrogate, that accounting for spatial orientation is essential for accurate characterization of such intermediates and for their further evolution. Using synchrotron-based photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy and high-level quantum calculations to investigate the electronic structure and ionization dynamics of the main ketohydroperoxide isomer formed during the oxidation of n-pentane, we reveal the multiple thermally accessible conformers of the chain-branching agent, highlighting how their distinct ionization energies and fragmentation pathways can significantly affect intermediate quantification via photoionization-based probes, a universal in situ method of choice. This research underscores the importance of stereochemistry not only in combustion systems but in any chemical system where a molecular-level understanding is crucial for developing accurate predictive models for both scientific and industrial applications. Abstract

The product formation channels of ground state carbon atoms, C(3P), reacting with ammonia, NH3, have been investigated using two complementary experiments and electronic structure calculations. Reaction products are detected in a gas flow tube experiment (330 K, 4 Torr) using tunable VUV photoionization coupled with time of flight mass spectrometry. Temporal profiles of the species formed and photoionization spectra are used to identify primary products of the C + NH3 reaction. In addition, H-atom formation is monitored by VUV laser induced fluorescence from room temperature to 50 K in a supersonic gas flow generated by the Laval nozzle technique. Electronic structure calculations are performed to derive intermediates, transition states and complexes formed along the reaction coordinate. The combination of photoionization and laser induced fluorescence experiments supported by theoretical calculations indicate that in the temperature and pressure range investigated, the H + H2CN production channel represents 100% of the product yield for this reaction. Kinetics measurements of the title reaction down to 50 K and the effect of the new rate constants on interstellar nitrogen hydride abundances using a model of dense interstellar clouds are reported in paper II.

A continuous supersonic flow reactor has been used to measure rate constants for the C + NH3 reaction over the temperature range 50 to 296 K. C atoms were created by the pulsed laser photolysis of CBr4. The kinetics of the title reaction were followed directly by vacuum ultra-violet laser induced fluorescence (VUV LIF) of C loss and through H formation. The experiments show unambiguously that the reaction is rapid at 296 K, becoming faster at lower temperatures, reaching a value of 1.8 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 at 50 K. As this reaction is not currently included in astrochemical networks, its influence on interstellar nitrogen hydride abundances is tested through a dense cloud model including gas-grain interactions. In particular, the effect of the ortho-to-para ratio of H2 which plays a crucial role in interstellar NH3 synthesis is examined.

National audience; Les observations effectuées par les instruments embarqués à bord de l’orbiteur Cassini montrent que la croissance moléculaire mise en évidence dans l’ionosphère de Titan mène à la formation d’aérosols. Des études récentes de la physico-chimie de cette couche de l’atmosphère ont établi que les ions lourds positifs et négatifs détectés par spectrométrie de masse sont des embryons d’aérosols.En dépit de ces avancées, de nombreuses interrogations demeurent. Un des objectifs des travaux menés consiste à comprendre le rôle exact des ions dans la formation des aérosols en examinant les collisions élémentaires à l’aide d’un réacteur produisant un écoulement supersonique uniforme couplé à une source sélective d’ions (CRESU-SIS). De façon complémentaire, un autre objectif consiste à simuler la croissance des ions dans un réacteur plasma (PAMPRE) ou photochimique (APSIS) et à comparer les produits ionisés avec les spectres mesurés par les instruments INMS et CAPS-ELS embarqués à bord de Cassini.Pour mener à bien ces études, nous associons modélisateurs, physico-chimistes expérimentateurs et théoriciens. Il est clair en effet que la compréhension de la photochimie des atmosphères planétaires froides, en particulier celle de Titan, passe par l’identification des processus clés ainsi que par l'obtention théorique et expérimentale d'un grand nombre de données fiables et sur les réactions et processus physico-chimiques à très basses températures (< 200 K) et leur utilisation dans des modèles photochimiques atmosphériques réalistes.

Abstract

While there is consensus on the fact that OOQOOH radicals, produced by two oxygen additions from alkyl radicals, are the heart of the low-temperature oxidation of alkanes, the determination of the isomeric distribution and the quantification of their derived products (ketohydroperoxides and diones) are still a challenge. For the first time, heavy oxygenated products produced during alkane oxidation have been investigated using electron/ion coincidence mass spectrometry. The investigated prototype reaction is n -pentane oxidation carried out in a jet-stirred reactor (temperatures from 585 to 665 K, pressure of 1.1 bar, lean mixture). Identification attempts were made for m/z 100 and 118 species using coincident mass-tagged Slow PhotoElectron Spectra obtained by electron-ion coincidence mass spectrometry combined with first principle computations, consisting in the determination of their adiabatic ionization energies and the Franck-Condon envelope of the photoionization spectra. 4-hydroperoxypentan-2-one has been confirmed as the dominant obtained ketohydroperoxide, as predicted by up-to-date kinetic models. However, difficulties due to fragmentation has made impossible the identification of the ketohydroperoxides present in lower amounts. In parallel, C 5 H 8 O 2 isomers were identified, showing the possible formation, in addition to diones, of species with a ketone and an enol function. In addition, we provide new information on the first steps of the fragmentation pathways of C 5 ketohydroperoxides. From the shape of their corresponding peaks on mass spectra and the energy and temperature dependence of their signal, ions at m/z 43, 57 and 85 have been identified as fragments from ketohydroperoxides. Taking into account these fragmentations lowers, by more than a factor of 10, the previously observed deviation between experiments and modeling for ketohydroperoxide mole fractions. The formation of the C 1 -C 2 carboxylic acids, predicted from Korcek decomposition, was also observed, but with a favored formation of acetic acid versus formic acid that what was predicted for propane.
