Abstract

Connected Autonomous Vehicles (CAVs) are widely expected to improve traffic safety and efficiency by exploiting information from surrounding vehicles via V2V communication. A CAV typically adapts its speed based on information from the vehicle it follows. CAVs can also use information from vehicles further ahead within their communication range, and this results in improved traffic safety and efficiency. In mixed traffic scenarios, however, this may not always be possible due to the presence of human-driven vehicles that do not have communication capabilities. Furthermore, as wireless vehicular networks are unreliable, information from other vehicles can be delayed or lost, which brings more challenges for CAVs in utilizing information from multiple leading vehicles. A few studies have investigated the impact of CAVs where they use information from multiple leading vehicles on traffic safety and efficiency, but only in very limited scenarios (i.e., with a very small number of vehicles). In contrast, this paper investigates the impact of CAV car-following control based on multiple leading vehicles information on both mixed traffic safety and efficiency in realistic scenarios in terms of imperfect communication, vehicle modelling, and traffic scenario. Results show that exploiting information from multiple, rather than a single, leading vehicles in CAV controller design further improves both traffic safety and efficiency especially at high penetration rates. In addition to proper tuning of CAV controller parameters (control gains and time headways), the scale of the improvement depends on both market penetration rate (MPR) and communication reliability. A packet error rate (PER) of 70% leads to an increase in traffic efficiency by 4.18% (at 40% MPR) and 12.19% (at 70% MPR), compared to the simple single leading vehicle information based controller.

Abstract

Connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs) can supplement the information from their own sensors with information from surrounding CAVs for decision making and control. This has the potential to improve traffic efficiency. CAVs face additional challenges in their driving, however, when they interact with human-driven vehicles (HDVs) in mixed-traffic environments due to the uncertainty in human's driving behavior e.g. larger reaction times, perception errors, etc. While a lot of research has investigated the impact of CAVs on traffic safety and efficiency at different penetration rates, all have assumed either perfect communication or very simple scenarios with imperfect communication. In practice, the presence of communication delays and packet losses means that CAVs might receive only partial information from surrounding vehicles, and this can have detrimental effects on their performance. This paper investigates the impact of CAVs on traffic efficiency in realistic communication and road network scenarios (i.e. imperfect communication and large-scale road network). We analyze the effect of unreliable communication links on CAVs operation in mixed traffic with various penetration rates and evaluate traffic performance in congested traffic scenarios on a large-scale road network (the M50 motorway, in Ireland). Results show that CAVs can significantly improve traffic efficiency in congested traffic scenarios at high penetration rates. The scale of the improvement depends on communication reliability, with a packet drop rate of 70% leading to an increase in traffic congestion by 28.7% and 11.88% at 40% and 70% penetration rates respectively compared to perfect communication.

Abstract

The presence of (partially) automated vehicles on the roads presents an opportunity to compensate the unstable behaviour of conventional vehicles. Vehicles subject to perturbations should (i) recover their equilibrium speed, (ii) react not to propagate but absorb perturbations. In this work, we start with considering vehicle systems consisting of heterogeneous vehicles updating their dynamics according to realistic behavioural car-following models. Definitions of all types of stability that are of interest in the vehicle system, namely input-output stability, scalability, weak and strict string stability, are introduced based on recent studies. Then, frequency domain linear stability analyses are conducted after linearisation of the modelled system of vehicles, leading to conditions for input-output stability, strict and weak string stability over the behavioural parameters of the system, for finite and infinite systems of homogeneous and heterogeneous vehicles. This provides a solid basis that was missing for car-following model-based control design in mixed traffic systems where only a proportion of vehicles can be controlled. After visualisation of the theoretical results in simulation, we formulate an optimisation strategy with LMI constraints to tune the behavioural parameters of the automated vehicles in order to maximise the L1 string stability of the mixed traffic flow while considering the comfort of automated driving. Abstract

PUBLISHED, Workshop on Dependable Network Computing and Mobile Systems (DNCMS'08), Workshop associated with the 27th IEEE Symposium on Reliable Distributed Systems (SRDS 2008)., Autonomous mobile entities are playing an ever increasing role in our everyday lives. When such entities operate in the same environment, they need to coordinate their behaviour in order to ensure system-wide safety constraints. As these entities are mobile, they can only communicate over wireless (possibly ad hoc) networks. In wireless networks, however, communication is unreliable, therefore consensus-based coordination cannot be applied. This means that entities need to take decisions independently, while having access to only limited information. This short paper describes an approach for entities to coordinate their behaviour without needing to reach a consensus. This approach is based on the notion of responsibility, which allows the duty of ensuring the safety constraints to be dis- tributed over entities. We de#28;ne the responsibility condition formally, and give an intuition as to how it can be used to by autonomous entities to coordinate their behaviour.

However, as sensing range and accuracy are inherently limited, and communication in wireless networks is unreliable, autonomous entities have access to only limited information about their environment and the current behaviour of other entities. This makes ensuring system-wide safety constraints particularly challenging. In this paper, we show how system-wide safety constraints can be translated into requirements on the behaviour of individual entities depending on the information available. We first present a formalism to express high-level system-wide safety constraints. We then introduce a notion of distributed responsibility allowing requirements on the behaviour of individual entities to be deduced. Since components of these applications share their environment with each other and with humans, they need to coordinate their behavior to respect strong safety constraints. Unfortunately, they typically make use of wireless networks in which real-time communication is highly unreliable, making coordination particularly challenging. We present a real-time communication model for wireless networks that takes into account that communication might not be reliable. It provides feedback to mobile components about the state of communication, so that they can adapt their behavior accordingly. We show how this model can be used to build reliable mobile applications in wireless networks: this involves specifying the safety constraints that need to be respected, and translating them into constraints on the behavior of individual components. To illustrate our approach, we describe an example from the intelligent transportation systems domain.

Abstract

PUBLISHED, Recent research in mobile computing has given rise to a new class of ubiquitous applications that are deployed in dynamic networks where communication is not reliable. In this paper, we describe how context-based reasoning can be used to overcome this limitation of (ad hoc) wireless communication. We present a small set of abstractions that facilitate the development of mobile ubiquitous applications centred on the definition of contexts of interest. Mobile intelligent agents, called sentient objects, extract, interpret and use context information to drive their behaviour. Communication between sentient objects is supported by an event-based middleware that provides feedback when communication cannot be maintained, allowing sentient objects to dynamically adapt their behaviour. We show how our approach has been successfully applied to an application from the transportation domain.

Abstract

PUBLISHED, Many programming models have been proposed to facilitate the development of context-aware applications. However, previous work does not offer support for building customised systems and has largely been targeted at a single application domain. In this paper, we describe MoCoA, a flexible middleware framework that permits the rapid development of context-aware applications and supports deployment scenarios ranging from augmented artefacts to city-wide smart-space applications. Crucially, MoCoA supports a small set of programming abstractions that are suitable for building a wide range of context-aware applications for deployment in a fixed or (ad hoc) mobile environment. For each of these abstractions, MoCoA provides a set of implementations via a library of components. We present three applications of the MoCoA framework that demonstrate both the use of the programming abstractions and the flexibility of the framework.

PUBLISHED, Toronto, Canada, Autonomous vehicles seem to be a promising approach to both reducing traffic congestion and improving road safety. However, for such vehicles to coexist safely, they will need to coordinate their behaviour to ensure that they do not collide with each other. This coordination will typically be based on (wireless) communication between vehicles and will need to satisfy stringent real-time constraints. However, realtime message delivery cannot be guaranteed in dynamic wireless networks which means that existing coordination models that rely on continuous connectivity cannot be employed. In this paper, we present a novel coordination model for autonomous vehicles that does not require continuous real-time connectivity between participants in order to ensure that system safety constraints are not violated. This coordination model builds on a real-time communication model for wireless networks that provides feedback to entities about the state of communication. The coordination model uses this feedback to ensure that vehicles always satisfy safety constraints, by adapting their behaviour when communication is degraded.
