Gas-encapsulated drops, much like antibubbles, are drops enclosed in a bubble within a liquid. They show potential as payload carriers in fluid transport and mixing techniques where sound waves can be leveraged to induce the collapse of the gas core and the subsequent release of the drop. Here, the interaction of millimetre-sized gas-encapsulated drops with impulsive laser-induced shock waves is investigated to gain fundamental insights into the release process. Experimental synchrotron X-ray phase contrast imaging, which allows the drop dynamics to be visualised inside the encapsulating bubble, is complemented by numerical simulations to study the intricate physics at play. Three drop dynamical release regimes are discovered, namely the drop impact , partial deposition and jet impact regimes. The regime type is mainly dependent on the shape of the bubble interface impacting the drop and the associated Weber and Reynolds numbers. The drop dynamics of the drop impact and partial deposition regimes show similarities with the canonical configuration of drops impacting flat liquid surfaces, whereas the jet impact regime resembles binary drop collisions, which allows existing scaling laws to be applied to describe the underlying processes. The release of the drop is investigated numerically. The time evolution of the drop dissemination within the surrounding liquid discloses enhanced mixing for dynamics involving high Weber and Reynolds numbers such as the drop impact and jet impact regimes. Tough bioadhesion has important implications in engineering and medicine but remains challenging to form and control. We report an ultrasound (US)-mediated strategy to achieve tough bioadhesion with controllability and fatigue resistance. Without chemical reaction, the US can amplify the adhesion energy and interfacial fatigue threshold between hydrogels and porcine skin by up to 100 and 10 times. Combined experiments and theoretical modeling suggest that the key mechanism is US-induced cavitation, which propels and immobilizes anchoring primers into tissues with mitigated barrier effects. Our strategy achieves spatial patterning of tough bioadhesion, on-demand detachment, and transdermal drug delivery. In this work, the classic problem of the aeroacoustic instability occurring in deep cavities subject to a low-Mach grazing flow is revisited experimentally and theoretically. This instability is caused by the constructive feedback between the acoustic modes of the cavity and the turbulent shear layer that forms at its opening. Systematic experiments are performed in order to construct a new theoretical model, which describes the aeroacoustic system as two linearly stable oscillators, with linear reactive coupling, nonlinear damping and nonlinear resistive coupling. This model constitutes the basis for a linear stability analysis, and for the prediction of limit cycle amplitudes by using a describing function approach and by searching the fixed points of amplitude equations. Moreover, it is shown that only supercritical Hopf bifurcations are found in this aeroacoustic system, and that, in contrast with many flow-induced vibration problems, frequency lock-in does not occur. In the last part of the paper, the intermittency observed in the vicinity of the supercritical Hopf bifurcations is successfully modelled by adding a coloured multiplicative noise to the grazing flow velocity in order to account for the effect of turbulence. The necessary conditions favouring intermittently stable or intermittently unstable intervals in such systems are identified using stochastic differential equations governing the aeroacoustic oscillations and Fokker–Planck equations ruling the probability density function of the acoustic envelope. This work is relevant for many musical and industrial configurations exhibiting this type of aeroacoustic instability, as well as for thermoacoustic instabilities in turbulent combustors for aeronautic and power generation applications. The resonant coupling between flames and acoustics is a growing issue for gas turbine manufacturers, which can be reduced by adding acoustic dampers on the combustion chamber walls. Nonetheless, if the engine is operated out of the stable window, the damper is exposed to high-amplitude acoustic levels, which trigger unwanted nonlinear effects. This work provides an overview of the dynamics of this coupled system using a simple analytical model, where a perfectly tuned damper is coupled to the combustion chamber. The damper, crossed by a purge flow in order to prevent hot gas ingestion, is modeled as a nonlinearly damped harmonic oscillator. The combustion chamber featuring a linearly unstable thermoacoustic mode is modeled as a Van der Pol oscillator. Analyzing the averaged amplitude equations gives the limit cycle amplitudes as function of the growth rate of the unstable mode and the mean velocity through the damper neck. Experiments are also performed on a simple rectangular cavity, where the thermoacoustic instability is mimicked by an electro-acoustic instability. A feedback loop is built, through which the growth rate of the instability can be controlled. A Helmholtz damper is added to the cavity and tuned to the mode of interest. The stabilization capabilities of the damper and the amplitude of the limit cycle in the unstable cases are in good agreement between the experiments and the analytical and numerical predictions, underlining the potentially dangerous behavior of the system, which should be taken into account for real engine cases. In a recent numerical and analytical study, Park et al. [Phys. Rev. E 84, 056604 (2011)] presented the statement that a linearly damped harmonic oscillator subject to a linear frequency chirp ωf(t)=ω0+et experiences "an early onset of resonance, setting in when the ramped forcing frequency is midway between its initial value ω0 and the natural frequency ωn for resonance in the unforced problem," i.e., the resonance occurs when the instantaneous frequency ωinst approaches (ω0+ωn)/2. This statement is not valid because the instantaneous frequency of the forcing function actually grows twice as fast as stated in the paper, and the resonance actually occurs for instantaneous forcing frequency ωinst approximately equal to the natural frequency ωn. We also highlight the difference between the critical frequency ramp rate for resonance amplitude measurement and the critical frequency ramp rate for resonance frequency and damping measurements.
