Purpose: To evaluate dentin sealing (DS), micropermeability (MP), and dentin bond strength (BS) of HEMA-free adhesives after 24 h and one year of artificial saliva storage. Materials and Methods: Two HEMA-free (G-ænial Bond and BeautiBond) and All-Bond 3 (the bottle of resin is HEMAfree) adhesives were tested. Adper Single Bond 2, a HEMA-containing adhesive, served as the control. All adhesives were applied according to the manufacturers’ instructions and teeth were prepared for DS (n = 5), MP (n = 5), and BS testing (n = 10). DS under a pulpal pressure of 10 psi was performed at 4 time points (when smear layer was present, after EDTA treatment, after adhesive application, and after 1 year). MP was assessed using pulpal pressure of a 20-cm aqueous dye-solution column and confocal laser scanning microscopy. DS, MP, and BS were performed after 24 h or one-year storage. BS and DS data were statistically analyzed using two-way ANOVA, the Tukey-Kramer test (for BS) and Tukey’s post-hoc test (for DS) (α = 0.05). A qualitative MP assessment was performed by comparing the accumulation of yellow dye within the resin-dentin interface. Results: Adper Single Bond 2 and All-Bond 3 completely sealed the dentin at 24 h and one year. G-ænial Bond showed statistically significant DS reduction of approximately 15% after one year. BeautiBond showed no DS reduction after one year. The resin-dentin interface created using Adper Single Bond 2 and GA showed dye accumulation primarily after one year. The mean BS of All-Bond 3 was statistically significantly higher than that of other adhesives, while G-ænial Bond and BeautiBond showed statistically significantly lower mean bond strengths than did Adper Single Bond 2 and All-Bond 3. After one-year storage, the mean BS was statistically significantly lower only for G-ænial Bond. Conclusion: DS, MP, and BS were not influenced by the absence of HEMA in the tested adhesives. Purpose: To examine the impact of oral disorders, socioenvironmental factors and subjective perceptions on children's school performance. Materials and Methods: The sample of 515 12-year-old children was randomly selected by conglomerate analysis. The children were clinically evaluated (DMFT index, bleeding on probing and DAI index) and asked to complete the questionnaire about family environment, self-perception of health status, oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) and school (questions in Child Perceptions Questionnaire - CPQ11-14). A questionnaire about socioeconomic status and perceptions about their children's health was sent to the parents. School performance was measured. Results: In a multivariate logistic model, the following variables remained statistically significant when associated with adolescents' poor school performance in the fi nal model: number of people living in household, household overcrowding, parental perceptions about their children's oral health, presence of carious lesions and a question from CPQ11-14 about difficulty in paying attention in class because of their teeth, lips, jaws or mouth. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that socioenvironmental factors, subjective perceptions and oral health status of children - particularly carious lesions, have an important impact on school performance, demonstrating the need for planning public health dentistry based on intersectoral public policies. Objective: To investigate association between parental locus of control (belief of individuals about what or who has control of the events of their lives) and bottle feeding habits among children from 3 to 5 years of age. Methodology: Parental locus of control validated in Brazil, and semi-structured questionnaire to obtain sociodemographic, health, and oral habit behaviors was applied to mothers of 992 preschool children. Outcome variable "use of feeding bottle" was studied according to the time of its use (=36 months and >36 months). Simple logistic regression models were adjusted and raw odds ratios were estimated for variables of distal blocks, which contemplated parental locus of control, socioeconomic characteristics of family, and maternal habits. In the intermediate block, the variables for conditions of the child's birth and place of health care attendance during the prenatal period and early childhood were included. In the proximal block, the time of breastfeeding and pacifier use were reported. Variables were analyzed from the distal to the proximal block, and the individual analyses that presented p = 0.20 remained in each model; included in the subsequent block were the variables with p = 0.10, because this was a study of prevention. Results: Longer time of feeding bottle use was associated with the internal parental locus of control, mothers older than 31 years of age, white race, premature children, who used pacifiers and are treated in the private health system. Conclusions: Children who maintained the habit of feeding bottle use for a longer time were those whose mother presented an internal locus of control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated the influence of chewing-side preference on the volume of the mandibular condyle and coronoid process and the dynamic parameters of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Cone beam computed tomographic scans of both TMJs of 90 individuals with a chewing-side preference were obtained while the patients were in the closed-mouth and maximum mouth-opening positions (test power a 0.80). The preferred chewing side was identified with a chewing gum test as well as by patient self-reports of preferred side and hemispheric dominance (ie, dominant side of the body). Two trained examiners assessed the volume of the mandibular condyle and coronoid process and the dynamic parameters of the TMJs on both sides. The volumes of the mandibular condyle on the 2 sides were compared using a paired t test (α = 0.05). McNemar and Bowker tests of symmetry (α = 0.05) were used for concordance analyses of the dynamic parameters of the TMJ on the chewing and nonchewing sides. No statistically significant difference was observed in the volume of the mandibular condyle (chewing gum test, P = 0.4548; interview, P = 0.7191; hemispheric dominance, P = 0.3471) or coronoid process (chewing gum test, P = 0.7718; interview, P = 0.8072; hemispheric dominance, P= 0.8301) on the chewing and nonchewing sides, regardless of the method used to identify chewing preference. The preferred chewing side also did not significantly affect the dynamic parameters of the mandibular condyle (P = 0.5538). Chewing-side preference does not influence the volume of the mandibular condyle or coronoid process or the dynamic parameters of the TMJ. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the Sorption (Sp) and solubility (SI) of a nanofilled composite (Filtek™ Z350) light-activated from the top in three curing light distances (0 mm, 3 mm and 6 mm) and immersed in three different mouthwashes (Plax Fresh Mint, Plax Alcohol Free, and Plax Whitening). Specimens (6 mm Ø and 1 mm height) were prepared (n = 5) and initially the degree of conversion (DC%) of discs was obtained by using a fourier transform infrared spectrometer. Then, the specimens were placed in a desiccator at 37°C and were weighed until a constant mass (m
1 ) was obtained. The discs were immersed in the mouthwashes for 3O days. Twice a day, the samples were immersed in 2 ml of the mouthwashes (12 hr intervals). After the 30-day period, the discs were reweighed (m2 ). The reconditioning in the desiccator was done until a constant mass (rri3) was obtained. The data of DC% were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) in split plots and the results showed statistical difference when photoactivated to 6 mm from the tip of the curing unit. The sorption data were submitted to two-way ANOVA and Tukey's Test at a 5% level of significance and it was observed that a statistical difference (P< 0.05) was only cured when the distance was 6 mm, but there was no difference in sorption between mouthwashes. The solubility data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis's Test (P = O.O5) and Dunn's Test, since a non-normal data distribution was observed. The values were negative, which means that there was a mass gain, masking the real solubility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Background: Studies in Brazil and in several countries indicate that emergency services are often used as gateways to health systems, overburdening them and impacting on the quality of service provided to the population. However, little is known about this phenomenon in the Emergency Care Units (EUCs) of our country. Objective: To investigate the variables associated with the inadequate use of two EUCs in a large municipality. Method: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 756 individuals that analyzed individual, contextual and service-related variables associated with the inappropriate use of EUCs through a hierarchical multiple logistic regression model. Results: The final regression model showed that individuals who had self-perceived their condition as an emergency and whose age was equal to or older than 60 years presented high odds to seek these services for non-urgent reasons. Conclusions: Individ variables were associated with non-urgent use of the ECUs. Future studies of a qualitative nature may help to understand the reasons for the inadequate use of these services by these individuals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Objective: To identify the sociodemographic, clinical and self-reported indicators of oral health associated with Brazilian adolescents' satisfaction with oral health. Methods: Secondary data were used following the examination of 4,231 adolescents, aged 15 to 19 years, participating in a national oral health survey (SBBrasil 2010). The independent variables were grouped into demographics, predisposition/ facilitation, oral health conditions and perceived dental treatment need. Satisfaction with oral health was considered the dependent variable. Ordinal logistic (multiple) regression models tested the variables in sequence (hierarchical), as per the conceptual model, assuming p≤0.05 as the criterion for remaining in the model (Wald test). Adjustment of the model was evaluated with the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and -2 Log L. Results: Participants with perceived treatment need (OR=2.36, 95% CI = 2.14-2.61), toothache (OR=1.18, 1.10- 1.28), presence of oral impacts on daily performance (OIDP) (OR= 1.55, 1.44-1.68), severe and very severe dental aesthetic index (DAI) (OR=1.17, 1.08-1.27), were female (OR=1.16, 1.10-1.23), were of black/brown ethnicity (OR=1.10, 1.04-1.17), and had caries in anterior (OR=1.20, 1.08-1.32) and posterior teeth (OR=1.22, 1.13-1.32) presented lower satisfaction with oral health. Conclusion: Satisfaction with oral health in Brazilian adolescents is linked to a multidimensional structure of factors that include demographic aspects, such as gender and ethnic group, self-perception aspects, such as perceived treatment need and oral health impact on daily activities, and clinical aspects, such as the presence of toothache, severe malocclusion and caries in anterior and posterior teeth. To avoid complications, the intimate relation between the maxillary sinus and dental roots deserves attention during surgical procedures. Accidental introduction of foreign bodies, such as dental implants, may irritate the maxillary sinus mucosa, causing sinusitis. Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been proven to be suitable for diagnosis in these cases by providing the exact location of the foreign body. The present article reports 3 cases of foreign bodies inside the maxillary sinus associated with inflammatory processes. Imaging examinations, such as CBCT, are an important tool to assist dentists in diagnosing the presence of foreign bodies in the interior of the maxillary sinus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Investigate the individual and contextual variables related to caries in underprivileged adolescents, and the disparity in distribution of the disease. Methods: Cross-sectional analytical study, conducted in the city of Piracicaba, SP, Brazil, in 2012. The probabilistic sample was composed of 1,179 adolescents from 15-19 years of age, randomly selected from 21 state schools and 34 Primary Health Units -- Family Health (PHU-FH). The dependent variables studied were number of decayed teeth and caries experience (DMFT). The independent variables were classified into individual (clinical, sociodemographic, psychosocial, self-perception, impact on oral health, access to services, and quality of life) and contextual (social exclusion index, total number of residents in suburb, literacy rate, and the following variables given in percentages: residences in the home ownership category, provision of domestic sewerage, trash collection, families with income of over 1 minimum wage per month, and families without monthly income) variables. The multilevel regression model was estimated by the PROC GLIMMIX (Generalized Linear Models-Mixed) procedure, considering the individual variables as Level 1 and the contextual variables of the suburbs as Level 2. Adjustment of the model was evaluated by -2 Res Log Likelihood with α = 0.05. Results: As regards the individual variables, adolescents who declared having a prison inmate in the Family and resided in homes with a larger number of persons, showed a higher number of decayed teeth. There were a larger number of decayed teeth, a higher DMFT value, and worse self-perception as regards the health of their teeth and mouth. Other variables, such as being of the female gender, age and time since last visit to the dentist were related to the DMFT index. As regards the contextual variables, the DMFT was lower in suburbs with greater access to domestic sewage, and the number of decayed teeth was higher in suburbs with the worst social exclusion indices. Conclusion: Individual and contextual variables were associated with the presence of caries and DMFT index in underprivileged adolescents, indicating that they must be taken into consideration in the formulation of policies directed towards oral health promotion and prevention activities in this group. Background: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the impact of oral health conditions, socioeconomic status and use of specific substances on quality of life of alcohol and drug addicted persons, receiving care at outpatient treatment facilities in Brazil. Methods: A random sample of 262 participants, mean age 37 years, from Psychosocial Care Centers for Alcohol and Drugs (CAPS AD) located in three cities in the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were clinically examined for caries experience (DMFT index) by a calibrated examiner. They were asked to complete a series of questionnaires, including the Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test (ASSIST), socioeconomic characteristics, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment (WHOQOL), which were considered the outcome variables of the study. Associations between oral health status, socioeconomic characteristics, substance involvement with WHOQOL were investigated by means of the chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis with a level of significance a < 0.05. Results: The mean DMF index of the group was 13.0. Subjects with DMFT >14 (OR = 2.25; CI 95%= 1.30-3.89); low-income (OR = 2.41; CI 95% = 1.22-4.77) and users of cocaine/crack (OR = 2.02; CI 95%= 1.15-3.59) were more likely to have poor general quality of life. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the general quality of life of addicted persons was associated with caries experience, low income and cocaine/crack use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: To compare temporomandibular (TMD) subgroups classified according to the presence of localized pain (LP) or widespread pain (WP) in order to assess the quality of life domains and verify which components affect most the functional capacity of facial pain patients. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted and the Short Form-36 Health Survey was applied in order to assess quality of life. Thirty-nine TMD/WP patients, 37 TMD/LP patients and 40 subjects free of TMD complaints were evaluated. Results: TMD/WP patients differed significantly from healthy controls in all SF-36 components and TMD/LP patients ranked between them. It was also observed that patients with bodily pain and TMD with WP are respectively, 4.16 and 49.42 times more likely to have low functional capacity. Conclusions: Functional capacity in TMD subgroups was only affected by the presence of bodily pain and WP. These patients feature high chance of low functional capacity. Furthermore, TMD patients with localized and widespread pain share role-emotional impairments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study evaluated the effects of humidity conditions and evaluation times on the dentin bond strength (DBS) of two self-adhesive resin cements (RC). The RC used were: RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE) and Clearfil SA Cement (Kuraray Med.). One hundred and twenty coronal portions of bovine incisors (n = 10) were used. Buccal surfaces were abraded in order to expose a flat dentinal surface (180-grit SiC) and to standardize the smear layer formation (600-grit SiC). The humidity conditions tested were: dry (air-dried for 10 s), slightly moist (water application with disposable applicator on dried dentin and water excess removed with absorbent paper), and moist (same application without water removal). The RC were used according to the manufacturers' recommendations and were applied to prepolymerized resin discs (2 mm thick; Sinfony, 3M ESPE), which were subsequently bonded to the dentin surfaces. After 24 h, half of the teeth were prepared for the microtensile bond strength test, while the other half were stored in water for 6 months and tested in tension (0.5 mm/min) until failure. A 3-way analysis of variance and the Tukey test were performed (preset alpha of 0.05). No RC showed any reduction of DBS after 6 months, and no significant difference was observed between them. The moist dentin increased the bond strength of Clearfil SA Cement for both periods of time. Humidity conditions can change the DBS; however, the study's results were product-dependent. Background: Voice problems are more common in teachers due to intensive voice use during routine at work. There is evidence that occupational disphonia prevention programs are important in improving the quality voice and consequently the quality of subjects' lives. Aim: To investigate the impact of educational voice interventions for teachers on quality of life and voice Methods: A longitudinal interventional study involving 70 teachers randomly selected from 11 public schools, 30 to receive educational intervention with vocal training exercises and vocal hygiene habits (experimental group) and 40 to receive guidance on vocal hygiene habits (control group control). Before the process of educational activities, the Voice-Related Quality of Life instrument (V-RQOL) was applied, and 3 months after conclusion of the activities, the subjects were interviewed again, using the same instrument. For data analysis, Prox MIXED were applied, with a level of significance a < 0.05. Results: Teachers showed significantly higher domain and overall V-RQOL scores after preventive intervention, in both control and experimental groups. Nevertheless, there was no statistical difference in scores between the groups. Conclusion: Educational actions for vocal health had a positive impact on the quality of life of the participants, and the incorporation of permanent educational actions at institutional level is suggested. Background The objective of this study was to compare the socioeconomic and family characteristics of underprivileged schoolchildren with and without curative dental needs participating in a dental health program. Methods A random sample of 1411 of 8-to-10 year-old Brazilian schoolchildren was examined and two sample groups were included in the cross-sectional study: 544 presented curative dental needs and the other 867 schoolchildren were without curative dental needs. The schoolchildren were examined for the presence of caries lesions using the DMFT index and their parents were asked to answer questions about socioenvironmental characteristics of their families. Logistic regression models were adjusted estimating the Odds Ratios (OR), their 95% confidence intervals (CI), and significance levels. Results After adjusting for potential confounders, it was found that families earning more than one Brazilian minimum wage, having fewer than four residents in the house, families living in homes owned by them, and children living with both biological parents were protective factors for the presence of dental caries, and consequently, curative dental needs. Conclusions Socioeconomic status and family structure influences the curative dental needs of children from underprivileged communities. In this sense, dental health programs should plan and implement strategic efforts to reduce inequities in oral health status and access to oral health services of vulnerable schoolchildren and their families. Background: Recent researches have pointed out the need to consider the functional and psychosocial dimensions of oral health, such as Oral Health-related Quality of Life (OHRQoL). The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of oral health status, socioeconomic factors and home environment of children on the four health domains of Child Perceptions Questionnaire (CPQ
11-14 ). Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Brazil with a sample of 286 schoolchildren aged 12 years and their parents. The schoolchildren were clinically examined, and participants were asked to complete the CPQ11-14 , as well as a questionnaire about home environment. In addition, a questionnaire was sent to each child's parents asking them about family socioeconomic status. The chi-square test and Poisson's regression analysis were performed. Results: After adjusting for potential confounders, variables sex, monthly family income, mothers' education showed a statistically significant association with all health domains of the CPQ11-14 . The family structure and presence of bleeding impacted on emotional (p = 0.0135), and social (p = 0.0010) well-being health domain scores. Orthodontic treatment need showed a strong negative effect on functional limitations domain score (p = 0.0021). Conclusions: Clinical and socio-environmental factors had different impacts on domains of oral health-related quality of life, demonstrating the need to consider these conditions in planning strategies for the oral health of schoolchildren. The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity of the bone density value of potential implant sites in HU obtained by a specific cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) device. In this study, the HU values obtained using a MSCT scanner were used as the gold standard. Twenty mandibles (40 potential implant sites) were scanned using an MSCT scanner (Somatom Sensation 40) and a CBCT scanner (i-CAT). The MSCT images were evaluated using the Syngo CT Workplace software and the CBCT images, using the XoranCat software. The images were evaluated twice by three oral radiologists, at 60 day intervals. The trabecular bone density of the same area was evaluated on both images. Intraclass coefficients (ICC) were calculated to examine the agreement between the examiners and between the two periods of evaluation. The bone density and area of the ROI were compared by the Student t test and Bland-Altman analysis. ICCs were excellent. The mean HU value obtained using CBCT (418.06) was higher than that obtained using MSCT (313.13), with a statistically significant difference (p < 0.0001). In addition, Bland-Altman analysis showed that the HU measures were not equivalent. In conclusion, the bone density in HU with CBCT images obtained using the device studied proved unreliable, since it was higher than that obtained using MSCT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of curing mode and viscosity on the biaxial flexural strength (FS) and modulus (FM) of dual resin cements. Methods: Eight experimental groups were created (n=12) according to the dual-cured resin cements (Nexus 2/Kerr Corp. and Variolink II/IvoclarVivadent), curing modes (dual or self-cure), and viscosities (low and high). Forty-eight cement discs of each product (0.5 mm thick by 6.0 mm diameter) were fabricated. Half specimens were light--activated for 40 seconds and half were allowed to self-cure. After 10 days, the biaxial flexure test was performed using a universal testing machine (1.27 mm/min, Instron 5844). Data were statistically analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (5%). Results: Light-activation increased FS and FM of resin cements at both viscosities in comparison with self-curing mode. The high viscosity version of light-activated resin cements exhibited higher FS than low viscosity versions. The viscosity of resin and the type of cement did not influence the FM. Light-activation of dual-polymerizing resin cements provided higher FS and FM for both resin cements and viscosities. Conclusion: The use of different resin cements with different viscosities may change the biomechanical behavior of these luting materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the validity of the visual exam and adjunct diagnostic technologies for posterior permanent teeth under epidemiological conditions. Methods: A probabilistic sample of 165 12-year-old schoolchildren from Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, was examined by visual exam (VII), visual exam + artificial lighting (V12), bitewing (BW), fiber optic transillumination (FOTI), DIAGNOdent and the associations among them. The Dl+D3 and D3 diagnostics criteria, under epidemiological conditions, were adopted. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy were calculated to determine the validity of the exams. Results: The most accurate diagnostic method was V12+BW exam for all dental surfaces under both diagnostic criteria. It was concluded that the BW was the best adjunct diagnostic technology on epidemiological dental caries surveys, increasing the validity of the dental exams. (Am J Dent 2011 ;24:363-366). Aim: To evaluate the influence of light-curing units and light-curing time on the microhardness of a nanofilled composite resin. Methods: Forty-five composite resin (Z350 - 3M) specimens were randomly prepared using Teflon ring molds (4.0 mm internal diameter and 2 mm depth) and divided into nine experimental groups (n=5): three polymerization units (conventional - 450 mW/cm²; 2nd generation LED - 1100 mW/cm ²; and 3rd generation LED - 700 mW/cm ²) and three light-curing times (20 s, 40 s, and 60 s). All specimens were polymerized with the light-curing tip positioned 8 mm far from the top surface of the specimen. After 24 h, Knoop microhardness measurements were made on the top and bottom surfaces of the specimen, with a load of 10 g for 10 s. Five indentations were made on each surface. All results were analyzed statistically by subdivided parcel ANOVA (Split-Plot) and Tukey's tests (p<0.05). Results: There were no statistically significant differences for the polymerization unit and light-curing time factors in either top or bottom surface. For all experimental conditions, the top surfaces showed greater hardness than the bottom surfaces (p<0.0001). Conclusions: The mode of polymerization and the light-curing time did not affect the hardness of the nanofilled composite resin, and increasing the light-curing time did not improve the hardness of the bottom surface of the composite resin. Abstract: This study evaluated the effect of the adhesive application mode and fiber post translucency on the push-out bond strength to dentin. Bovine roots were endodontically treated, and 10 roots were used for each adhesive application mode: PB (Prime&Bond 2.1), PB + SC (Self-cure activator), PB + SBM (Scotchbond Multi-purpose adhesive system), BB (Brush&Bond), BB + CAT (chemical catalyst), and BB + SBM. The translucent Light-Post and Aestheti-Post were cemented. The roots/cemented posts were transversally sectioned to originate three thirds (cervical, middle, and apical). The push-out test was performed, and the failure mode of fractured specimens was analyzed. There was no difference between the fiber posts. For PB and BB, the use of hydrophobic adhesive resin SBM increased post bond strength. The use of SC and CAT catalyst did not affect the push-out bond strength values. The apical third presented the lowest bond strengths. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Purpose: To investigate the behavior of two bonding systems: self-etching primer Clearfil Liner Bond 2V (CLB) and total-etch Single Bond (SB) when submitted to two bond strength tests: shear bond strength (SBS) and microtensile (MTBS). Methods: Flat dentin surfaces were obtained at the facial surface of extracted bovine incisors. μTBS started with adhesive application and incremental resin composite insertion. Samples were then sliced into 1 mm slabs parallel to the long axis of the tooth. Half of the specimens from each group were trimmed in order to obtain dumbbell-shaped (D) specimens with a cross-sectional area of 1 mm², and in the other half of the group, the slabs were cut into beams (B) with a cross section of 1 mm² area. Specimens were individually fractured on a microtensile apparatus. For SBS, crown segments were embedded in polyester resin and a flat dentin surface was exposed for bonding. After adhesive and restorative procedures were accomplished, the specimens were kept in water for 24 hours prior to bond testing. The tests were performed in a universal testing machine. MPa values were analyzed by Tukey's test (P< 0.05), two-way ANOVA (μTBS) and Student's t-test (SBS). Results. Mean values (SD) on μTBS were: SB/B: 42.6 (15.1). SB/D: 35.4 (6.8), CLB/B: 14.3 (10.3) and CLB/D: 27.0 (7.9). SBS values (SD) were: SB: 17.3 (5.6) and CLB 15.9 (7.2). Beam specimens bonded with CLB presented the lowest results. SBS did not show statistical differences between groups. The results showed that the shear bond test seemed to lack the sensitivity that is required to detect subtle differences between bonding agents or procedures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of topically applied povidone-iodine (polyvinylpyrrolidone and iodine [PVP-l]) used as an adjunct to non-surgical therapy of furcation involvements. Methods: Forty-four patients presenting at least one Class II furcation involvement that bled on probing with probing depth (PD) ≥5 mm were recruited. Patients were stratified into two treatment groups: 1) subgingival instrumentation by an ultrasonic device using PVP-I (10%) as the cooling liquid (test); and 2) identical treatment using distilled water as the cooling liquid (control). The following clinical outcomes were evaluated: plaque index, bleeding on probing (BOP), position of the gingival margin, relative attachment level (RAL), PD, and relative horizontal attachment level (RHAL). The N-benzoyl-L-arginine-p-nitroanilide (BAPNA) test was used to analyze the trypsin-like activity in dental biofilm. The clinical and biochemical parameters were evaluated at baseline and 1, 3, and 6 months after therapy. Results: Both groups had similar means of PD reduction and RAL and RHAL gain. At 6 months, these variables were, respectively, 2.31, 1.17, and 1.00 mm in the control group and 2.31, 1.23, and 1.02 mm in the test group. There was also no difference between groups regarding the number of furcation sites presenting RAL gain ≥2 mm. The results of the BAPNA test failed to demonstrate significant differences between groups. Conclusion: Non-surgical therapy can effectively treat Class II furcation involvements, and the use of topically applied PVP-I as an adjunct to subgingival instrumentation does not provide additional benefits. Purpose: Bleaching agents containing 10% carbamide peroxide may be applied to the surface of preexisting packable resin-based composite restorations. The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of a 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching agent (Review, SS White, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) on surface roughness and microhardness of three packable resin-based composites (Fill Magic condensable, Vigodent, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Alert, Jeneric Pentron, Wallingford, CT, USA; Definite, Degussa, Hanau, Germany). Materials and Methods: For the control (no bleaching) and experimental (bleaching treatment) groups, 12 specimens of each material were prepared in cylindrical acrylic molds. The experimental specimens were exposed to the bleaching agent for 6 hours a day for 3 weeks. During the remaining time (18 h), they were stored in artificial saliva. The control specimens remained immersed in artificial saliva throughout the experiment. Surface roughness and microhardness measurements were performed on the top surface of each specimen. Results: Analysis of variance and the Tukey test showed no significant differences in roughness among the packable composites evaluated (p = .18), but those submitted to the treatment with a 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching agent displayed significantly higher mean surface roughness than did the corresponding control group for each material. For the microhardness tests, there were significant differences among materials (p < .0001). Alert showed the highest microhardness values followed by Definite and Fill Magic condensable. Conclusions: Ten percent carbamide peroxide bleaching agents may change the surface roughness of packable composites, but they do not alter their microhardness. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Under the conditions of this study, a 3-week bleaching regimen with 10% carbamide peroxide agents affected the roughness of packable composites. Nevertheless, the surface microhardness was not affected, although there were differences among the materials evaluated inherent to their composition. INSET: COMMENTARY. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To evaluate the effect of different polymerization techniques on microleakage and gap formation of resin-based composite restorations. Out correlation test was also carried out between these methodologies. Methods: 180 vertical slot cavities were prepared in bovine teeth and filled with Z250/Single Bond system, for the following six groups (n=30): Soft-start I - 10 seconds at 75 mW/cm² + 30 seconds at 560 mW/cm²; Soft-start II - 10 seconds at 190 mW/cm² + 30 seconds at 560 mW/cm² Pulse delay - 3 seconds at 300 mW/cm² + < 5 minutes waiting + 30 seconds at 560 mW/cm²; Plasma arc - 3 seconds at 1,500 mW/cm²; High intensity - 40 seconds at 810 mW/cm²; Conventional (control) - 40 seconds at 560 mW/cm². After polishing, epoxy replicas were prepared for electron microscopy analysis (n=10), at x500 magnification. The samples were thermocycled, new epoxy replicas were prepared, and the teeth were immersed in 2% methylene blue dye solution for 4 hours. Marginal gaps were evaluated again and the microleakage was assessed. Results: No statistical difference among polymerization techniques was observed for microleakage (Kruskal-Wallis test). For gap formation there was no statistical difference among polymerization techniques either before or after thermocycling (Tukey test). Conversely, thermocycling significantly increased the gap formation for all groups. No correlation (Spearman correlation test) was observed for the results of microleakage and gap formation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate gingival and calculus status among schoolchildren 12 years of age using a geographic information system and multilevel analysis. METHODS: A total of 1 002 schoolchildren were selected from 18 municipal districts by means of cluster sampling, from among 25 public and private schools in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, in 2005. Examinations were carried out by a single calibrated examiner utilizing the criteria of the World Health Organization, as well as the Community Periodontal Index. Social, economic, and behavioral variables were recorded with the use of a questionnaire and were used in the individual analysis (first level). The variables "percentage of heads of families without income" and "percentage of illiterate heads of families" were used in the contextual analysis (second level). RESULTS: A geographic information system was constructed for mapping the distribution of gingival bleeding. The variables were visually distinguished in the maps and demonstrated a tendency toward better gingival health in the central areas of the city, which are recognized as more privileged. On the contextual level, only the "percentage of illiterate heads of families" was significantly associated to gingival bleeding. CONCLUSIONS: The study confirms better oral health status among schoolchildren from privileged families, but does not confirm the data regarding "income." The individuals from areas in which the heads of family did not have income were not associated to a higher prevalence of gingival problems. This suggests that these individuals are reasonably protected from the impact of social privation due to the actions of public health care services in the municipality.

The aim of this study was to evaluate, in the field, the horticultural characteristics of Sacha inchi (Plukenetia volubilis L.) in vitro plants considering time of flowering and harvesting, the productivity, as well as their morphological characteristics: color and shape of leaves, stems and fruits. The plantlets, originated from the apex of in vitro plants, were propagated in culture medium with MS salts and vitamins, add 30g L-1 sucrose and 1.0mg L-1 BAP for six weeks. Were selected at random, four plants propagated in vitro, four plants by seminal and twenty-two plants, also by composing the border, totaling thirty plants. Analyses were completed weekly until fourteen months after planting, which occurred before the first pruning. The results indicate the non-occurrence of genetic variability in vitro grown plants, as well as early in the production and increased productivity as compared with the conventional material obtained via seminal. Objectives: This study evaluated the dentine bond strength (BS) and the antibacterial activity (AA) of six adhesives against strict anaerobic and facultative bacteria. Methods: Three adhesives containing antibacterial components (Gluma 2Bond (glutaraldehyde)/ G2B, Clearfil SE Protect (MDPB)/CSP and Peak Universal Bond (PUB)/chlorhexidine) and the same adhesive versions without antibacterial agents (Gluma Comfort Bond/GCB, Clearfil SE Bond/CSB and Peak LC Bond/PLB) were tested. The AA of adhesives and control groups was evaluated by direct contact method against four strict anaerobic and four facultative bacteria. After incubation, according to the appropriate periods of time for each microorganism, the time to kill microorganisms was measured. For BS, the adhesives were applied according to manufacturers' recommendations and teeth restored with composite. Teeth (n = 10) were sectioned to obtain bonded beams specimens, which were tested after artificial saliva storage for one week and one year. BS data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey test. Results: Saliva storage for one year reduces the BS only for GCB. In general G2B and GCB required at least 24 h for killing microorganisms. PUB and PLB killed only strict anaerobic microorganisms after 24 h. For CSP the average time to eliminate the Streptococcus mutans and strict anaerobic oral pathogens was 30 min. CSB showed no AA against facultative bacteria, but had AA against some strict anaerobic microorganisms. Conclusions: Storage time had no effect on the BS for most of the adhesives. The time required to kill bacteria depended on the type of adhesive and never was less than 10 min. Clinical significance: Most of the adhesives showed stable bond strength after one year and the Clearfil SE Protect may be a good alternative in restorative procedures performed on dentine, considering its adequate bond strength and better antibacterial activity. Objective. To evaluate gingival and calculus status among schoolchildren 12 years of age using a geographic information system and multilevel analysis. Methods. A total of 1 002 schoolchildren were selected from 18 municipal districts by means of cluster sampling, from among 25 public and private schools in Piracicaba, São Paulo, Brazil, in 2005. Results. A geographic information system was constructed for mapping the distribution of gingival bleeding. The variables were visually distinguished in the maps and demonstrated a tendency toward better gingival health in the central areas of the city, which are recognized as more privileged. On the contextual level, only the "percentage of illiterate heads of families" was significantly associated to gingival bleeding. Conclusions. The study confirms better oral health status among schoolchildren from privileged families, but does not confirm the data regarding "income." The individuals from areas in which the heads of family did not have income were not associated to a higher prevalence of gingival problems. This suggests that these individuals are reasonably protected from the impact of social privation due to the actions of public health care services in the municipality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of preheating composite resins used as luting agents for indirect restorations on microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and adhesive interfaces., Material and Methods: Fifty sound extracted third molars were used. Ten experimental groups were formed with three different luting agents: one resin cement (RelyX ARC) and two composite resins (Venus and Z250 XT). The composite resins were tested both at room temperature and when preheated to 64°C. Restoration depth was tested using 2 or 4 mm-height indirect composite resin restorations, previously made on cylindrical molds. Adhesive and luting procedures were done under simulated pulpal pressure. After luting, the teeth were sectioned into beams with a cross-sectional area of 1 mm2 at the bonded interface, and tested in tension at 0.5 mm/min. The characteristics of the adhesive interfaces were observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The µTBS data were analyzed using ANOVA and the Tukey test (α = 0.05)., Results: When luting 2 mm restorations, the composite resin Z250 XT, preheated or at room temperature, achieved significantly higher µTBS than did RelyX ARC. At this depth, Venus did not differ from the resin cement, and with the 4 mm restorations, only preheated Venus presented significantly higher µTBS than RelyX ARC. Preheating the composite resin resulted in thinner luting interfaces, with a more intimate interaction between luting agent and adhesive layer., Conclusion: Preheating composite resin for luting procedures may not improve µTBS, although it could be used to reduce material viscosity and improve restoration setting.

- Abstract
Purpose: This study evaluated (1) the dentin bond strength of fluoridated restorative systems following aging and (2) the enamel/dentin microhardness around restorations after a pH-cycling regimen., Materials and Methods: Sixty-four human third molars and four restorative systems were used. A resin-modified glass ionomer (GC Fuji II LC) was used as a fluoride-containing material in the positive control group, while Adper Easy Bond adhesive and Filtek Z350 XT composite resin, which are not fluoridated, were used together in the negative control group. Beautifil II composite resin and FL-Bond II adhesive, both fluoride-containing materials, were compared to Bond Force and Estelite Sigma Quick restorative system, which only contain fluoride in the adhesive. For dentin bond strengths, specimens of each material were fabricated for two test groups (n=8): group 1: tested after 24 h; group 2: tested after 1 year of storage in artificial saliva. Both groups were tested using a microtensile method. For the cross-sectional microhardness test, standardized Class V cavities were prepared and filled with the different restorative systems. After experiencing repeated thermocycling and being subjected to pH-cycling, the teeth were sectioned. The microhardness was measured in enamel and dentin at 50 μm from the cavity wall and at six depths in relation to the surface subjected to pH cycling., Results: None of the restorative systems showed decreased bond strength after storage for one year in artificial saliva. No significant differences in microhardness were observed among the restorative materials on enamel and dentin., Conclusion: All the restorative systems evaluated presented stable bond strength after one year of storage. The pH cycling caused a reduction in the superficial enamel microhardness close to the cavity wall. In dentin, the demineralization affected the superficial and sub-surface areas.
