It has been widely accepted that resistant starch (RS) provides numerous health benefits for human. In this research, we aimed at evaluating the performance of novel starch-lipid complexes, RS5, in comparison with RS2 on physical features, glucolipids metabolism, inflammation, and gut microbiota profiles of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) rats. The T2DM model was established by streptozotocin injection to the high-fat-sugar fed rats. According to a serial of biochemical analyses, we found that RS5 diets were strongly correlated with enhanced homeostatic model assessment for insulin secretion (HOMA-IS), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), adiponectin (ADP), insulin action index (IAI), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP1), and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in T2DM rats whilst negatively associated with the low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) and inflammatory cytokines, showing the capabilities to ameliorate T2DM symptoms by regulation of glucolipid metabolism, gut metabolites, and inflammation. On the other hand, RS2-enriched supplementations were influential in the mediation of insulin secretion to improve glucose metabolism. The increasing evidence collected herein suggested that intestinal microbiota could mediate glucolipids metabolism and alleviate inflammation after certain microflora nourished by RS. In addition, RS intake made an impact on phosphoinositide 3-kinase/protein kinase B signaling pathway that might contribute to the improvement of glucose metabolism, insulin resistance, and inflammatory responses.

IntroductionStaphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is one of the most important zoonotic pathogens and can be transmitted to humans through the meat diet routes, causing necrotising pneumonia.MethodsThis study investigated the therapeutic effect of bacteriophage lysin LysGH15 on necrotising pneumonia in rabbit model caused by S. aureus.ResultsIn the in vitro experiments, 50 μg/mL LysGH15 not only significantly reduced the viable count (approximately 3.24 × 106 CFU/g) of chicken meat stored at 4°C for 48 h but also effectively reduced the viable count of chicken meat thawed at 4°C and 30°C, with reductions of approximately 1.42 × 106 CFU/g and 2.78 × 106 CFU/g, respectively. In the in vivo experiments, a single intranasal administration of 300 μg/rabbit increased the survival rate of rabbits to 60%. At 72 h postinfection, the number of bacteria in the lung tissues of the rabbits treated with LysGH15 was 7 × 104 CFU/g, which was significantly lower than that in the lung tissues of rabbits treated with PBS (7.76 × 106 CFU/g) or linezolid (6.38 × 105 CFU/g). In addition, LysGH15 treatment alleviated lung tissue damage in infected rabbits and significantly reduced the levels of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL), alpha-toxin (Hla), and the cytokines IFN-γ, TNF-α, and IL-8 in their lung tissues, similar to those in rabbits treated with linezolid.DiscussionThese results suggest that LysGH15 has the potential to be used as a novel antimicrobial agent for the treatment of necrotising pneumonia caused by S. aureus.

Resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound known for its diverse biological activities, has demonstrated multiple pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, and cardiovascular protective properties. Recent studies suggest that these effects are partly mediated through the regulation of macrophage polarization, wherein macrophages differentiate into pro-inflammatory M1 or anti-inflammatory M2 phenotypes. Our review highlights how resveratrol modulates macrophage polarization through various signaling pathways to achieve therapeutic effects. For example, resveratrol can activate the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) pathway and inhibit the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT3) and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P)-YAP signaling axes, promoting M1 polarization or suppressing M2 polarization, thereby inhibiting tumor growth. Conversely, it can promote M2 polarization or suppress M1 polarization by inhibiting the NF-κB signaling pathway or activating the PI3K/Akt and AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathways, thus alleviating inflammatory responses. Notably, the effect of resveratrol on macrophage polarization is concentration-dependent; moderate concentrations tend to promote M1 polarization, while higher concentrations may favor M2 polarization. This concentration dependence offers new perspectives for clinical treatment but also underscores the necessity for precise dosage control when using resveratrol. In summary, resveratrol exhibits significant potential in regulating macrophage polarization and treating related diseases.

Abstract Manipulation of confined water dynamics by voltage keeps great importance for diverse applications. However, limitations on the membrane functions, voltage-control range, and unclear dynamics need to be addressed. Herein, we report an anomalous electrically controlled gating phenomenon on cation-intercalated multi-layer Ti3C2 membranes and reveal the confined water dynamics. The water permeation rate was improved rapidly following the application and rise of voltage and finally reached a maximum rate at 0.9 V. The permeation rate starts to decrease from 0.9 V. Below 0.9 V, the electric field affects the charge and polarity of water molecules and then leads to ordered and denser rearrangement in the two-dimensional (2D) channel to accelerate the permeation rate. Above 0.9 V, with the assistance of metal cations, the surge in current induced aggregation of water molecules into clusters, thereby limiting the water mobility. Based on these findings, a high-performance humidity sensor was developed by simultaneously optimizing the response and recovery speeds through electric manipulation. This work provides flexible strategies in intelligent membrane design and nanofluidic sensing.

Background: Clear Cell Renal Cell Carcinoma (ccRCC), the predominant subtype of renal cell carcinoma (RCC), ranks among the most common malignancies worldwide. Vasculogenic mimicry (VM) plays a pivotal role in tumor progression, being closely linked with heightened chemoresistance and adverse prognosis in cancer patients. Nonetheless, the broader impact of vasculogenic mimicry-related genes (VRGs) on ccRCC patient prognosis, tumor microenvironment characteristics, and treatment response remains incompletely understood. Methods: Consensus clustering identified VRG-associated subtypes. We developed a machine learning framework integrating 12 algorithms to establish a consistent VM-related signature (VRG_score). The predictive value of VRG_score for ccRCC prognosis and treatment response was assessed. FOXM1′s clinical relevance was explored using the UCLCAN database. FOXM1 expression in tumor and adjacent tissues was assessed using Western Blotting, IHC, RNA-seq, and Chip-qPCR methods, and its regulatory mechanism was confirmed. Results: We examined VRG mutation and expression patterns in ccRCC at the gene level, identifying two distinct molecular clusters. A consensus VRG_score was formulated using a machine learning computational framework and Cox regression, displaying strong predictive power for prognosis and clinical translation. Additionally, FOXM1 was found to be upregulated in ccRCC, correlating with clinical pathological features and positively regulating PYCR1, thereby activating the PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway and promoting VM formation. Conclusion: This study constructed a VM-related signature and revealed that FOXM1 promotes VM formation in renal cell carcinoma through the PYCR1-PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling axis, serving as a prognostic indicator and potential therapeutic target.

Health management is the foothold of remaining useful life (RUL) prediction, known as ‘prognostics’. However, sudden failures in complex systems can lead to increased downtime and maintenance costs, ultimately diminishing system health and availability. Considering intelligent prognostics of components, maintenance decision-making for spare parts ordering and replacement is proposed within a spare parts support system. The decision-making process aims to minimize costs while maximizing availability as its primary objective. It considers spare parts ordering time and replacement time as key decision variables. By developing a maintenance decision-making model, it aims to determine the optimal time for ordering and replacing spare parts. This maintenance approach is designed to provide technical support for effective and rational equipment management decision-making.

In the scenario of limited labeled remote-sensing datasets, the model’s performance is constrained by the insufficient availability of data. Generative model-based data augmentation has emerged as a promising solution to this limitation. While existing generative models perform well in natural scene domains (e.g., faces and street scenes), their performance in remote sensing is hindered by severe data imbalance and the semantic similarity among land-cover classes. To tackle these challenges, we propose the Multi-Class Guided GAN (MCGGAN), a novel network for generating remote-sensing images from semantic labels. Our model features a dual-branch architecture with a global generator that captures the overall image structure and a multi-class generator that improves the quality and differentiation of land-cover types. To integrate these generators, we design a shared-parameter encoder for consistent feature encoding across two branches, and a spatial decoder that synthesizes outputs from the class generators, preventing overlap and confusion. Additionally, we employ perceptual loss (LVGG) to assess perceptual similarity between generated and real images, and texture matching loss (LT) to capture fine texture details. To evaluate the quality of image generation, we tested multiple models on two custom datasets (one from Chongzhou, Sichuan Province, and another from Wuzhen, Zhejiang Province, China) and a public dataset LoveDA. The results show that MCGGAN achieves improvements of 52.86 in FID, 0.0821 in SSIM, and 0.0297 in LPIPS compared to the Pix2Pix baseline. We also conducted comparative experiments to assess the semantic segmentation accuracy of the U-Net before and after incorporating the generated images. The results show that data augmentation with the generated images leads to an improvement of 4.47% in FWIoU and 3.23% in OA across the Chongzhou and Wuzhen datasets. Experiments show that MCGGAN can be effectively used as a data augmentation approach to improve the performance of downstream remote-sensing image segmentation tasks.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a leading cause of vision loss in the elderly, significantly diminishing quality of life. Currently, there is no available treatment to reverse retinal degeneration and neuronal loss, prompting a focus on interventions that slow the progression of intermediate AMD and geographic atrophy. Berries are rich in bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, anthocyanins, carotenoids, and resveratrol, known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-angiogenic properties. Preclinical studies suggest that extracts from various berries, such as aronia, honeysuckle, black currant, goji, and bilberry, can improve retinal health by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. Although clinical trials are limited, emerging evidence indicates that dietary intake of these compounds may enhance visual function and slow the progression of AMD. This review summarizes findings from both animal studies and clinical trials to identify specific berries that have been validated to prevent or delay AMD progression, as well as those with potential therapeutic value. Furthermore, we examine the key phytochemicals present in these berries, their mechanisms of action on macular degeneration, and their distinct properties for therapeutic application. A deeper understanding of these characteristics could enable the rational appliance of berries, especially wolfberry, and berry-derived components, such as carotenoids and anthocyanins, to optimize better therapeutic outcomes in AMD management.

Abstract Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is a prevalent gastrointestinal cancer characterized by high mortality and an unfavorable prognosis. While combination therapies involving surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy are advancing, targeted therapy for ESCC remains underdeveloped. As a result, the overall five‐year survival rate for ESCC is still below 20%. Herein, ESCC‐specific DNA aptamers and an innovative aptamer‐modified nano‐system is introduced for targeted drug and gene delivery to effectively inhibit ESCC. The EA1 ssDNA aptamer, which binds robustly to ESCC cells with high specificity and affinity, is identified using cell‐based systematic evolution of ligands by exponential enrichment (cell‐SELEX). An EA1‐modified nano‐system is developed using a natural egg yolk lipid nanovector (EA1‐EYLNs‐PTX/siEFNA1) that concurrently loads paclitaxel (PTX) and a small interfering RNA of Ephrin A1 (EFNA1). This combination counters ESCC's proliferation, migration, invasion, and lung metastasis. Notably, EFNA1 is overexpressed in ESCC tumors with lung metastasis and has an inverse correlation with ESCC patient prognosis. The EA1‐EYLNs‐PTX/siEFNA1 nano‐system offers effective drug delivery and tumor targeting, resulting in significantly improved therapeutic efficacy against ESCC tumors. These insights suggest that aptamer‐modified nano‐systems can deliver drugs and genes with superior tumor‐targeting, potentially revolutionizing targeted therapy in ESCC.

IntroductionDietary advanced lipoxidation end products (ALEs), which are abundant in heat-processed foods, could induce lipid metabolism disorders. However, limited studies have examined the relationship between maternal ALEs diet and offspring health.MethodsTo investigate the transgenerational effects of ALEs, a cross-generation mouse model was developed. The C57BL/6J mice were fed with dietary ALEs during preconception, pregnancy and lactation. Then, the changes of glycolipid metabolism and gut microbiota of the offspring mice were analyzed.ResultsMaternal ALEs diet not only affected the metabolic homeostasis of dams, but also induced hepatic glycolipid accumulation, abnormal liver function, and disturbance of metabolism parameters in offspring. Furthermore, maternal ALEs diet significantly upregulated the expression of TLR4, TRIF and TNF-α proteins through the AMPK/mTOR/PPARα signaling pathway, leading to dysfunctional glycolipid metabolism in offspring. In addition, 16S rRNA analysis showed that maternal ALEs diet was capable of altered microbiota composition of offspring, and increased the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio.DiscussionThis study has for the first time demonstrated the transgenerational effects of maternal ALEs diet on the glycolipid metabolism and gut microbiota in offspring mice, and may help to better understand the adverse effects of dietary ALEs.

Choosing a suitable core loss model and accurately predicting energy loss are crucial in designing magnetic devices with high efficiency based on soft magnetic composites (SMCs). In this work, FeSiAl and FeSi SMCs with a uniform insulating layer were fabricated by a phosphating process. The effects of excitation waveform and DC bias field on core loss have been investigated in depth. The results show that different remagnetization rates of SMC under ideal sinusoidal and square waves result in different core losses at the same frequency and flux density. The improved general Steinmetz equation and the modified Steinmetz equation were shown to be suitable for calculating core loss under square excitation waves without DC bias field. When the DC bias field is applied, the core loss of FeSiAl and FeSi SMCs was found to increase significantly due to the magnetization state gradually approaching saturation. Interestingly, the variation tendency of core loss can be accurately predicted using the waveform coefficient Steinmetz equation under square excitation conditions with a DC bias environment. This work not only provides deep insights into core loss under different excitation waveforms and DC bias fields but also determines the application scope of different core loss models.

Abstract Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal nitrides and carbides (MXenes), represented by Ti3C2Tx, have broad applications in flexible electronics, electromechanical devices, and structural membranes due to their unique physical and chemical properties. Despite the Young’s modulus of 2D Ti3C2Tx has been theoretically predicted to be 0.502 TPa, which has not been experimentally confirmed so far due to the measurement is extremely restricted. Here, by optimizing the sample preparation, cutting, and transfer protocols, we perform the direct in-situ tensile tests on monolayer Ti3C2Tx nanosheets using nanomechanical push-to-pull equipment under a scanning electron microscope. The effective Young’s modulus is 0.484 ± 0.013 TPa, which is much closer to the theoretical value of 0.502 TPa than the previously reported 0.33 TPa by the disputed nanoindentation method, and the measured elastic stiffness is ~948 N/m. Moreover, during the process of tensile loading, the monolayer Ti3C2Tx shows an average elastic strain of ~3.2% and a tensile strength as large as ~15.4 GPa. This work corrects the previous reports by nanoindentation method and demonstrates that the Ti3C2Tx indeed keeps immense potential for broad range of applications.

D-Psicose, as a low-calorie rare sugar, has attracted a lot of attention in recent years for alternating to sucrose. The anti-obesity effect of D-psicose has been extensively confirmed in previous studies, however, the impact of D-psicose on colitis remains vague. Here, we firstly evaluated the effect of the D-psicose prophylactic intervention on dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in C57BL/6 mice. The pathological symptoms, inflammatory cytokines levels, gut microbiota composition, short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) production and colonic barrier integrity were comprehensively evaluated. The results confirmed that D-psicose intervention aggravated colitis, characterized by the exacerbation of colon shortening, increase of colonic inflammatory infiltration, and marked exaltation of disease activity indices and IL-6, IL-1β and TNF-α levels. Further, the dysfunction of gut microbiota was identified in the psicose group. The abundance of pro-inflammatory bacteria Lachnospiraceae_NK4A136_group was significantly up-regulated while the abundance of probiotics Akkermansia and Lactobacillus were significantly down-regulated in the psicose group compared to the model group. Moreover, the production of SCFAs was suppressed in the psicose group, accompanied by a decrease in the level of mucin 2 (Muc-2). Collectively, the underlying mechanism of the exacerbation of colitis by D-psicose intervention might be attributed to microbiota dysfunction accompanied by the reduction of SCFAs, which leads to the damage of the mucosal barrier and the intensification of inflammatory invasion.

Abstract Background Evidence on the association between multimorbidity and cognitive impairment in Chinese older population is limited. In addition, whether a healthy lifestyle can protect cognitive function in multimorbid older population remains unknown. Methods A total of 6116 participants aged ≥ 65 years from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey were followed up repeatedly. The number of coexisting chronic diseases was used for assessing multimorbidity and cardiometabolic multimorbidity. Three lifestyle statuses (unhealthy, intermediate, and healthy) were defined based on a lifestyle score covering smoking, alcohol drinking, body mass index, outdoor activities, and dietary pattern. Abstract Developing in situ/operando spectroscopic techniques with high sensitivity and reproducibility is of great importance for mechanistic investigations of surface-mediated electrochemical reactions. Herein, we report the fabrication of highly ordered rhombic gold nanocube superlattices (GNSs) as substrates for surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (SEIRAS) with significantly enhanced SEIRA effect, which can be controlled by manipulating the randomness of GNSs. Finite difference time domain simulations reveal that the electromagnetic effect accounts for the significantly improved spectroscopic vibrations on the GNSs. In situ SEIRAS results show that the vibrations of CO on the Cu2O surfaces have been enhanced by 2.4 ± 0.5 and 18.0 ± 1.3 times using GNSs as substrates compared to those on traditional chemically deposited gold films in acidic and neutral electrolytes, respectively. Combined with isotopic labeling experiments, the reaction mechanisms for C-C coupling of CO electroreduction on Cu-based catalysts are revealed using the GNSs substrates.

Abstract Understanding the structure-stability relationship of catalysts is imperative for the development of high-performance electrocatalytic devices. Herein, we utilize operando attenuated total reflectance surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy (ATR-SEIRAS) to quantitatively monitor the evolution of Cu single-atom catalysts (SACs) during the electrochemical reduction of CO2 (CO2RR). Cu SACs are converted into 2-nm Cu nanoparticles through a reconstruction process during CO2RR. The evolution rate of Cu SACs is highly dependent on the substrates of the catalysts due to the coordination difference. Density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the stability of Cu SACs is highly dependent on their formation energy, which can be manipulated by controlling the affinity between Cu sites and substrates. This work highlights the use of operando ATR-SEIRAS to achieve mechanistic understanding of structure-stability relationship for long-term applications.

Foodborne pathogens, such as Salmonella, are major factors that pose significant threats to global food safety and public health. Salmonella typhimurium is a prominent serotype contributing to non-typhoidal salmonellosis, which is a prevalent foodborne illness affecting humans and animals. Bacteriophages are considered one of the most environmentally friendly biocontrol agents, particularly in the food industry, owing to their high specificity and high safety. However, the emergency of phage-resistant mutants limits the biocontrol effect of phage treatment, leading to the requirement for a high diversity of lytic phages. Therefore, the study isolated and characterized two novel lytic Salmonella bacteriophages (SPYS_1 and SPYS_2) targeting S. typhimurium ATCC14028 and evaluated their effectiveness in reducing the contamination rates for milk and chicken tenders. Morphological and genomic analyses indicated that Salmonella phages SPYS_1 and SPYS_2 are novel species classified under the genus Skatevirus and the genus Berlinvirus, respectively. Both phages exhibited high stability across a broad range of thermal and pH conditions. The one-step growth curve result suggested that both phages had a short adsorption time and a large burst size in a single lytic cycle. The phage SPYS_1 demonstrated a noteworthy inhibition effect on the growth of S. typhimurium ATCC14028 in milk, resulting in a ~2-log reduction within the 2 to 4 h range. Overall, both phages have shown significant potential for application in food safety in the future.

Abstract Mass-Suite (MSS) is a Python-based, open-source software package designed to analyze high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS)-based non-targeted analysis (NTA) data, particularly for water quality assessment and other environmental applications. MSS provides flexible, user-defined workflows for HRMS data processing and analysis, including both basic functions (e.g., feature extraction, data reduction, feature annotation, data visualization, and statistical analyses) and advanced exploratory data mining and predictive modeling capabilities that are not provided by currently available open-source software (e.g., unsupervised clustering analyses, a machine learning-based source tracking and apportionment tool). As a key advance, most core MSS functions are supported by machine learning algorithms (e.g., clustering algorithms and predictive modeling algorithms) to facilitate function accuracy and/or efficiency. MSS reliability was validated with mixed chemical standards of known composition, with 99.5% feature extraction accuracy and ~ 52% overlap of extracted features relative to other open-source software tools. Example user cases of laboratory data evaluation are provided to illustrate MSS functionalities and demonstrate reliability. MSS expands available HRMS data analysis workflows for water quality evaluation and environmental forensics, and is readily integrated with existing capabilities. As an open-source package, we anticipate further development of improved data analysis capabilities in collaboration with interested users. Graphical abstract

Understanding the interactions between fish gut microbiota and the aquatic environment is a key issue for understanding aquatic microorganisms. Environmental microorganisms enter fish intestines through feeding, and the amount of invasion varies due to different feeding habits. Traditional fish feeding habitat preferences are determined by fish morphology or behavior. However, little is known about how the feeding behavior of fish relative to the vertical structure in a shallow lake influences gut microbiota. In our study, we used nitrogen isotopes to measure the trophic levels of fish. Then high-throughput sequencing was used to describe the composition of environmental microbiota and fish gut microbiota, and FEAST (fast expectation-maximization for microbial source tracking) method was used to trace the source of fish gut microbiota. We investigated the microbial diversity of fish guts and their habitats in Lake Sanjiao and verified that the sediments indeed played an important role in the assembly of fish gut microbiota. Then, the FEAST analysis indicated that microbiota in water and sediments acted as the primary sources in half of the fish gut microbiota respectively. Furthermore, we classified the vertical habitat preferences using microbial data and significant differences in both composition and function of fish gut microbiota were observed between groups with distinct habitat preferences. The performance of supervised and unsupervised machine learning in classifying fish gut microbiota by habitat preferences actually exceeded classification by fish species taxonomy and fish trophic level. Finally, we described the stability of fish co-occurrence networks with different habitat preferences. Interestingly, the co-occurrence network seemed more stable in pelagic fish than in benthic fish. Our results show that the preferences of fish in the vertical structure of habitat was the main factor affecting their gut microbiota. We advocated the use of microbial interactions between fish gut and their surrounding environment to reflect fish preferences in vertical habitat structure. This approach not only offers a novel perspective for understanding the interactions between fish gut microbiota and environmental factors, but also provides new methods and ideas for studying fish habitat selection in aquatic ecosystems.

Hexafluoropropylene Oxide Dimer Acid (HFPO-DA or GenX) is a pervasive perfluorinated compound with scant understood toxic effects. Toxicological studies on GenX have been conducted using animal models. To research deeper into the potential toxicity of GenX in humans and animals, we undertook a comprehensive analysis of transcriptome datasets across different species. A rank-in approach was utilized to merge different transcriptome datasets, and machine learning algorithms were employed to identify key genetic mechanisms common among various species and humans. We identified seven genes—TTR, ATP6V1B1, EPHX1, ITIH3, ATXN10, UBXN1, and HPX—as potential variables for classification of GenX-exposed samples, and the seven genes were verified in separate datasets of human, mouse, and rat samples. Bioinformatic analysis of the gene dataset further revealed that mitochondrial function and metabolic processes may be modulated by GenX through these key genes. Our findings provide insights into the underlying genetic mechanisms and toxicological impacts of GenX exposure across different species and offer valuable references for future studies using animal models to examine human exposure to GenX.

Peanut allergy is considered to be a major health issue with global effects. To date, no effective curative approach has been applied for the therapy of the anaphylaxis resulting from the peanut allergens. The accurate and effective detection methods for the surveillance of allergens in food are still the primary strategies to avoid allergic diseases. In this study, nanobodies (Nbs) derived from the Heavy-Chain only Antibodies (HCAbs) were selected against the general peanut protein extract through the unbiased strategy to facilitate the development of the sandwich ELISA for the detection and surveillance of peanut allergen contamination. The target antigen of the selected Nb was identified as peanut allergen Ara h 3, and a cross-reaction was observed with the member of Gly 1 from the Ara h 3 family. The applicability of the self-paired Nb P43 on the establishment of the immuno-assay was verified. A sandwich ELISA against peanut allergen was developed, which reached a linear range of 0.2－10.6 μg/mL, and a limit of detection of 53.13 ng/mL.

Effect of heat treatments on the microstructure and corrosion behavior of Al–Mn–Mg–Sc–Zr alloy fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) were systematically investigated. The results demonstrate that the 300 °C/5 h heat-treatment doesn't alter the typical bimodal grain distribution of LPBF-fabricated alloy. However, the grains at molten pool boundaries experience a significant growth after a 500 °C/5 h heat treatment, narrowing the gap of grain size between fine-grain (FG) region and coarse-grain (CG) region. It is also found that the heat treatments have an impact on Al3(Sc, Zr) and Al6(Mn, Fe) precipitates. Detailedly, the Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates undergo a slight growth in size and obvious increase in quantity after heat treatment whilst the Al6(Mn, Fe) particles go through a rapid increase both in amount and size, especially for the alloy after being subject to a higher temperature heat treatment. As consequence, the heat-treated LPBF aluminum alloys exhibit worse corrosion resistance compared with their original state. The Al3(Sc, Zr) precipitates acting as micro-cathodes at molten pool boundaries accelerate the preferential corrosion of fine grain regions of 300 °C/5 h heat-treated alloy (HT-300). In contrast, the 500 °C/5 h heat-treated alloy (HT-500) tends to promote a more uniform corrosion due to the dissolution of the homogeneously distributed Al6(Mn, Fe) anodes on the alloy surface.

The no-reflow phenomenon (NRP) after successful vascular recanalization in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) has become a major cause of poor clinical prognosis and ineffective recanalization. However, there is currently no clear definition or unified clinical assessment method for the NRP. Therefore, it is urgent to clarify the clinical evaluation criteria for the NRP and develop new no-reflow evaluation techniques so that remedial treatment can be applied to AIS patients suffering from the NRP. In this brief review, a variety of NRP assessment methods and defining criteria for clinical practice are presented.

Abstract In this work, the crevice corrosion behavior and biofouling coverage of 316L stainless steel (316L SS), 2205 duplex stainless steel (2205 DSS), and 2507 super duplex stainless steel (2507 SDSS) in natural seawater were investigated through long-term field exposure tests. The results revealed that both artificial crevice corrosion and biofouling-induced crevice corrosion occurred on the surface of three stainless steels. The corrosion rate was ranked as 316L SS » 2205 DSS＞2507 SDSS. The deepest area of the artificial corrosion pit was at the edge of the crevice, which was related to the IR drop and acidification of the localized solution. The highest biofouling coverage and the most severe biofouling-induced corrosion occurred on the surface of 316L SS. The attachment of large organisms to the metal surface formed a fouling barrier layer, further blocking the flow of material over the crevices, and the artificial crevice corrosion was accelerated. The initiation of barnacle-induced corrosion was due to the formation of a crevice between the barnacle and the substrate, resulting in the entry of seawater. The acidification of the solution caused by catalytic-occluded cells was responsible for the continuous development of barnacle-induced corrosion, which was similar to the propagation of the artificial crevice corrosion.

Ball-milled Fe-Si-Al soft magnetic powder cores with the particle compositions away from the classical Sendust point were prepared in this work. The influences of alloy composition on the metallographic structure, density, hardness, and resistivity of Fe-Si-Al alloy, as well as the frequency-dependent permeability, loss, and the anti-saturation performance of Fe-Si-Al powder cores, were investigated systematically. It was found that the hardness of Fe-Si-Al alloy increases with the Si mass ratio and the saturation magnetization (Ms) increases with the Fe mass ratio. The alloy hardness affects the particle size after the ball-milling process and, thus, influences the porosity of the powder core. Together with adjusting the demagnetization field by controlling the particle size and the core’s porosity, changing the alloy composition to drive K and λ deviating from zero can effectively improve the anti-saturation performance of Fe-Si-Al powder cores at the expense of hysteresis loss, to some extent. In this work, good comprehensive magnetic properties were obtained in the Fe85.5-Si12-Al2.5 powder core. Its effective permeability percentage at 100 Oe and Ms were 59.12% and 132.23 emu/g, respectively, which are higher than those of the classical Sendust core. This work provides a feasible idea for optimizing the overall performance of the high-power magnetic device.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a microvascular complication of diabetes. Microaneurysms (MAs) are often observed in the retinal vessels of diabetic patients and represent one of the earliest signs of DR. Accurate and efficient detection of MAs is crucial for the diagnosis of DR. In this study, an automatic model (MA-YOLO) is proposed for MA detection in fluorescein angiography (FFA) images. To obtain detailed features and improve the discriminability of MAs in FFA images, SwinIR was utilized to reconstruct super-resolution images. To solve the problems of missed detection of small features and feature information loss, an MA detection layer was added between the neck and the head sections of YOLOv8. To enhance the generalization ability of the MA-YOLO model, transfer learning was conducted between high-resolution images and low-resolution images. To avoid excessive penalization due to geometric factors and address sample distribution imbalance, the loss function was optimized by taking the Wise-IoU loss as a bounding box regression loss. The performance of the MA-YOLO model in MA detection was compared with that of other state-of-the-art models, including SSD, RetinaNet, YOLOv5, YOLOX, and YOLOv7. The results showed that the MA-YOLO model had the best performance in MA detection, as shown by its optimal metrics, including recall, precision, F1 score, and AP, which were 88.23%, 97.98%, 92.85%, and 94.62%, respectively. Collectively, the proposed MA-YOLO model is suitable for the automatic detection of MAs in FFA images, which can assist ophthalmologists in the diagnosis of the progression of DR.

The current high-salinity wastewater treatment technology is complex, costly, and carries the risk of secondary contamination. As a traditional desalination technology, the combined method using frozen technology has broad development prospects in wastewater treatment. This study investigates the desalination effects of waste leachate using three different methods: the frozen–gravity method (FGM), frozen–centrifugal method (FCM), and frozen–blowing methods (FBMs), under various experimental conditions. The results showed that the salt rejection of all three methods could reach more than 75% under the conditions of a freezing time of 12 h, freezing temperature of −15 °C, and ice production rate of 40%; the salt rejection of FGM increased at higher ambient temperatures, but it was not conducive to the removal of organic pollutants; the salt rejection of FCM was sensitive to the centrifugal time and centrifugal speed, with a significant correlation (p < 0.05), the increase in centrifugal time and centrifugal speed can help to improve the salt rejection, and the increase in centrifugal speed in the range of 1000–2000 rpm can accelerate the discharge of concentrated brine more effectively; the frozen–crushed–blowing method (FCBM) in FBM has a salt rejection as high as 93.86% at an ice production rate of 25.80%, which reduces the salinity of the effluent from 4.07% to 0.25%, speeds up the desalination process, and improves the salt rejection compared to the other methods. This study provides a new perspective and reference for the treatment of high-saline wastewater.

Abstract High catalytic efficiency and long‐term stability are two main components for the performance assessment of an electrocatalyst. Previous attention has been paid more to efficiency other than stability. The present work is focused on the study of the stability processed on the FeCoNiRu high‐entropy alloy (HEA) in correlation with its catalytic efficiency. This catalyst has demonstrated not only performing the simultaneous hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with high efficiency but also sustaining long‐term stability upon HER and OER. The study reveals that the outstanding stability is attributed to the spinel oxide surface layer developed during evolution reactions. The spinel structure preserves the active sites that are inherited from the HEA's intrinsic structure. This work will provide an insightful direction/pathway for the design and manufacturing activities of other metallic electrocatalysts and a benchmark for the assessment of their efficiency–stability relationship.

The metabolic syndrome (MS) has become one of the main problems in public health. Tea polyphenols (TPs), the main bioactive components of tea, has been claimed to have the potential to regulate metabolism and effectively prevent or mitigate the MS. However, many studies into the effects of TPs on MS have provided conflicting findings and the underlying mechanism has been elusive. The predominant TPs in unfermentedand and fermented tea are catechins and oxidized polyphenols (theaflavins and thearubigins), both of which have low bioavailability and reach the colon where most gut microbes inhabit. Gut microbiota has been demonstrated to be tightly associated with host metabolism. The interactions between TPs and gut microbiota will lead to the alterations of gut microbiota composition and the production of metabolites including short chain fatty acids, bile acids, amino acids and TPs derived metabolites, accordingly exerting their biological effects both locally and systemically. This review highlighted the contribution of metabolites and specific gut bacteria in the process of TPs intervention on the MS and further discuss how TPs impact the MS via gut microbiota from the viewpoint of gut organ/tissue axis.

Cronobacter sakazakii, an emerging opportunistic pathogen, is implicated in severe foodborne outbreak infections in premature and full-term infants. Generally, acid tolerance is vital for the pathogenesis of foodborne pathogens; however, its role in C. sakazakii virulence remains largely unknown. To screen out acid-tolerance determinants from transposon mutants, anovel counterselection method using gentamicin and acid was developed. Using the counterselection method and growth assay, we screened several acid-sensitive mutants and found that nlpD encodes an acid-resistance factor in C. sakazakii. Compared to the wild-type strain, the nlpD mutant exhibited attenuated virulence in a rat model. Using macrophage THP-1 cells and a pH probe, we verified that nlpD enables bacteria to resist macrophages by resisting acidification. Finally, we confirmed that nlpD maintains C. sakazakii membrane integrity in acid using propidium iodide permeabilization assays via flow cytometry. Our results confirm that nlpD is a novel virulence factor that permits C. sakazakii to survive under acid stress conditions. Considering that NlpD is a conserved lipoprotein located in the bacterial outer membrane, NlpD could be used as a target for drug development.

ABSTRACT The role of dietary amino acids or intact proteins in the progression of colitis remains controversial, and the mechanism involving gut microbes is unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of an elemental diet (ED) enriched in amino acids and a polymeric diet enriched in intact protein on the pathogenesis of dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. Our results showed that the ED induced remission of colitis in mice. Notably, ED treatment reduced the abundance of the mucolytic bacteria Akkermansia and Bacteroides, which was attributed to decreased colonic protein fermentation. Consistently, the activities of mucolytic enzymes were decreased, leading to protection against mucus layer degradation and microbial invasion. Fecal microbiota transplantation from ED-fed mice reshaped microbial ecology and alleviated intestinal inflammation in recipient mice. The ED failed to induce remission of colitis in pseudogermfree mice. Together, our results demonstrate the critical role of the gut microbiota in the prevention of colitis by an ED. IMPORTANCE The prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease is rapidly increasing and has become a global burden. Several specific amino acids have been shown to benefit mucosal healing and colitis remission. However, the role of amino acids or intact proteins in diets and enteral nutrition formulas is controversial, and the mechanisms involving gut microbes remain unclear. In this study, we investigated the effects of an elemental diet (ED) enriched in amino acids and a polymeric diet enriched in intact protein on the pathogenesis of colitis in mice. The underlying mechanisms were explored by utilizing fecal microbiota transplantation and pseudogermfree mice. ED treatment reduced the abundance of mucolytic bacteria, thereby protecting the mucus layer from microbial invasion and degradation. For the first time, we convincingly demonstrated the critical role of gut microbiota in the effects of the ED. This study may provide new insights into the gut microbiota-diet interaction and its role in human health.

As a crucial computer vision task, multi-objective semantic segmentation has attracted widespread attention and research in the field of remote sensing image analysis. This technology has important application value in fields such as land resource surveys, global change monitoring, urban planning, and environmental monitoring. However, multi-target semantic segmentation of remote sensing images faces challenges such as complex surface features, complex spectral features, and a wide spatial range, resulting in differences in spatial and spectral dimensions among target features. To fully exploit and utilize spectral feature information, focusing on the information contained in spatial and spectral dimensions of multi-spectral images, and integrating external information, this paper constructs the CD-MQANet network structure, where C represents the Channel Creator module and D represents the Dual-Path Encoder. The Channel Creator module (CCM) mainly includes two parts: a generator block and a spectral attention module. The generator block aims to generate spectral channels that can expand different ground target types, while the spectral attention module can enhance useful spectral information. Dual-Path Encoders include channel encoders and spatial encoders, intended to fully utilize spectrally enhanced images while maintaining the spatial information of the original feature map. The decoder of CD-MQANet is a multitasking decoder composed of four types of attention, enhancing decoding capabilities. The loss function used in the CD-MQANet consists of three parts, which are generated by the intermediate results of the CCM, the intermediate results of the decoder, and the final segmentation results and label calculation. We performed experiments on the Potsdam dataset and the Vaihingen dataset. Compared to the baseline MQANet model, the CD-MQANet network improved mean F1 and OA by 2.03% and 2.49%, respectively, on the Potsdam dataset, and improved mean F1 and OA by 1.42% and 1.25%, respectively, on the Vaihingen dataset. The effectiveness of CD-MQANet was also proven by comparative experiments with other studies. We also conducted a thermographic analysis of the attention mechanism used in CD-MQANet and analyzed the intermediate results generated by CCM and LAM. Both modules generated intermediate results that had a significant positive impact on segmentation.

Developing an effective method to promote the electrocatalytic activity of stainless steel for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains challenging. In this paper, cathodic plasma bombardment (CPB) has been employed to modify the surface of 304 stainless steel by creating a nanoscale three dimensional structure with a large specific surface area, which could significantly improve the electrocatalytic OER performance of 304 stainless steel. The influence of CPB conditions on the electrocatalytic performance of 304 stainless steel was systematically investigated. The results indicate that the electrode prepared under the optimal CPB conditions only requires an overpotential of 323 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a Tafel slope of 51 mV dec−1 in the 1 M KOH alkaline electrolyte. The work provides a new methodology for the development of highly active and low-cost stainless steel-based electrocatalytic electrodes.

Abstract Ears are responsible for the sense of hearing, which is indispensable for a human to understand the environment. It is similar to an intelligent vehicle where acoustical data contains useful and valuable information to comprehend the environment to enable autonomous driving. One important application of acoustical data processing is to localize sound sources. However, due to the complexity of microphone array setup and the unstable localization performance against noises, few research articles tried to localize surrounding vehicles based on on‐board microphone arrays. The main contribution is the first implementation to combine roof‐mounted microphones and high definition maps as vehicle' s ears for online 3D localization of surround vehicles. This article designed a six‐microphones sensor array dedicated to the on‐board application and improved sound source localization algorithms using the observer technique to adapt to dynamic driving scenarios. A map‐based localization enhancement method is also proposed to make the system more robust to noises and model errors. Feasibility tests are conducted with real vehicles in the scenarios of pass‐by and overtaking. Experimental results validate the feasibility of using microphones to localize surrounding vehicles with lane‐level accuracy.

To understand the spatio-temporal changes in the water resources carrying capacity (WRCC) of Pearl River Delta (PRD), 19 indicators were selected from three subsystems (water resources, socio-economic, and eco-environment), and the entropy weight-TOPSIS model was employed to analyze the WRCC of each cities in PRD from 2015 to 2020. As the result shows, the water resources subsystem (WRS) had the largest weight in the evaluation system, followed by the socio-economic subsystem (SES), and the eco-environmental subsystem (EES); among these indicators, economic density, water resources per capita, annual precipitation, and new soil erosion treatment area had the highest weights; the PRD had a low WRCC score overall, with considerable regional differences; the capacity score changed with time, but the ranking of cities remained largely the same, with Shenzhen, Zhaoqing, and Huizhou marking higher scores, whereas Zhongshan, Foshan, and Zhuhai achieving lower scores. It was also found that Shenzhen had a high score for SES, which made up for the shortage of natural water resources there; cities like Huizhou, Jiangmen, and Zhaoqing which boast rich water resources and extensive development achieved high scores for WRS and EES. As the PRD develops, it is important to optimize dispatch of water resources, boost green economy, and promote ecological wellbeing.

Obesity is a major public health issue worldwide. Oolong tea (OT), which is partially fermented from Camellia sinensis leaves, has proven health benefits and potential preventive applications in multiple studies. However, research on the role of OT in obesity prevention and potential mechanisms is still limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate the modulatory effects of OT intervention on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity and gut microbiota dysbiosis using an obese mouse model. Our results showed that 8-week OT supplementation with 93.94% polyphenols significantly decreased body weight gain, adipose tissue mass, and serum levels of triglyceride (2.60 mmol/L), cholesterol (5.49 mmol/L), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (0.61 mmol/L) in HFD-fed mice. Meanwhile, OT intervention was observed to improve fat accumulation, hepatic damage, glucose intolerance, and endotoxemia and alleviate inflammation by decreasing the levels of pro-inflammatory factors. OT also upregulated the expression of genes including Srebf1, Ppara, Lxra, Pgc1a, and Hsl and downregulated the expression of genes including Leptin, Il-6, and Il-1b. In addition, the gut dysbiosis characterized by decreased flora diversity and increased Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio in obese mice was recovered by OT intervention. Certain differentially abundant microbes caused by HFD feeding, including Enterococcus, Intestinimonas, Blautia, and Bilophila, were also improved by OT treatment. This study demonstrated that OT, as a novel resource of dietary polyphenols, exhibited a protective effect on HFD-induced obesity and gut microbiota disorder.

Bisphenol A (BPA), a plasticizer, is widely believed to cause metabolic disorders. However, an effective intervention is still absent. This study investigated the beneficial effects of Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) on insulin resistance and microbial disturbance induced by BPA. The serum glucose, insulin, total triglyceride, and total cholesterol were decreased in BPA-treated mice after the intervention of EGCG. The sensitivity of insulin signals in peripheral tissue was improved by modulating the phosphorylation of IRS-1, Akt, and GSK-3β. In addition, 16S rRNA analysis for fecal microbiota showed the relative abundance of Ruminiclostridium, Blautia, unidentified_Ruminococcaceae, and Candidatus_Saccharimonas were restored by the high dose of EGCG. Furthermore, EGCG increased the concentrations of fecal short-chain fatty acids and protected the gut barrier impaired by BPA. Overall, our results demonstrated the positive effects of EGCG on BPA-induced insulin resistance and gut microbial dysbiosis. The current study provides a potential treatment for the chronic metabolic toxicity of BPA.

Background: In the past, most researchers paid more attention to the biological activity of tea infusion and tea polyphenols; however, the prebiotic role of tea leaf powder is still unknown. Green tea leaf powder is rich in dietary fiber and is suggested to be beneficial for human health. Only limited studies have looked at the effects of tea leaf powder (which mainly contains tea dietary fiber) on gut microbiota and health. Objective: The purpose of our study was to determine the effects of green tea leaf powder in preventing hyperlipidemia and to understand its potential lipid-lowering mechanism. Design: Mice in three treatment groups were fed high-fat diets (HFDs) by administering either 0.5, 1.0, or 2.0 g/kg•d dietary fiber-enriched green tea leaf powder of low, medium, or high, respectively, for 12 weeks. Serum biochemical analyses and mRNA gene expression levels of related energy and lipid metabolism biomarkers from the liver were investigated. In addition, 16S rRNA cecal microbiota and fecal short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were tested. Results: Green tea leaf powder reduced body weight and total cholesterol of HFD-fed mice in a dose-dependent manner. Green tea leaf powder also increased satiety hormone secretion and reduced systemic inflammation of HFD-fed mice. Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analyses reconfirmed that green tea leaf powder prevented dyslipidemia by enhancing hepatic mRNA expression levels of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha, cholesterol 7α-hydroxylase, and Adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-binding cassette transporter A1 and decreasing the expression of fatty acid synthase, sterol regulatory element-binding protein 1c, and liver X receptor. Green tea leaf powder promoted the growth of Blautia, Oscillibacter, Ruminiclostridium, Alloprevotella, and Butyrivibrio and inhibited the growth of Erysipelatoclostridium, Desulfovibrio, and Candidatus_Saccharimonas in the cecum of HFD-fed mice. Conclusion: In summary, our results indicate that green tea leaf powder improves lipid metabolism of HFD-fed mice in a dose-dependent manner. The potential mechanism involves a synergistic role in reprogramming gut microbiota, increasing satiety hormone secretion, and reducing systemic inflammation.

In the ultra dense network (UDN),the pilot reuse scheme would produce significant interference,which will affect the accuracy of channel estimation.To solve this problem,an interference avoidance strategy for UDN with pilot reuse was proposed.An interference model of subcarriers for UDN was provided and the interference probability of subcarriers was derived.Then,based on the model,a pilot position selection model was proposed and an interference avoidance strategy for UDN with pilot reuse was provided.The simulation results show that compared with the traditional channel estimation algorithm,the channel estimation with proposed interference avoidance strategy can effectively avoid the interference and ensure the accuracy of channel estimation in UDN with pilot reuse.

Sessile droplets play a crucial role in the microreactors of biochemical samples. Acoustofluidics provide a non-contact and label-free method for manipulating particles, cells, and chemical analytes in droplets. In the present study, we propose a micro-stirring application based on acoustic swirls in sessile droplets. The acoustic swirls are formed inside the droplets by asymmetric coupling of surface acoustic waves (SAWs). With the merits of the slanted design of the interdigital electrode, the excitation position of SAWs is selective by sweeping in wide frequency ranges, allowing for the droplet position to be customized within the aperture region. We verify the reasonable existence of acoustic swirls in sessile droplets by a combination of simulations and experiments. The different periphery of the droplet meeting with SAWs will produce acoustic streaming phenomena with different intensities. The experiments demonstrate that acoustic swirls formed after SAWs encountering droplet boundaries will be more obvious. The acoustic swirls have strong stirring abilities to rapidly dissolve the yeast cell powder granules. Therefore, acoustic swirls are expected to be an effective means for rapid stirring of biomolecules and chemicals, providing a new approach to micro-stirring in biomedicine and chemistry.

BackgroundDespite the continuing effort in investigating the preventive therapies for stroke-associated pneumonia (SAP), which is closely associated with unfavorable outcomes, conclusively effective therapy for the prevention of SAP is still lacking. Remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) has been proven to improve the survival in the sepsis model and inflammatory responses have been indicated as important mechanisms involved in the multi-organ protection effect of RIC. This study aimed to assess the safety and the preliminary efficacy of RIC in the prevention of SAP in patients with acute ischemic stroke.MethodsWe performed a proof-of-concept, pilot open-label randomized controlled trial. Eligible patients (age > 18 years) within 48 h after stroke onset between March 2019 and October 2019 with acute ischemic stroke were randomly allocated (1:1) to the RIC group and the control group. All participants received standard medical therapy. Patients in the RIC group underwent RIC twice daily for 6 consecutive days. The safety outcome included any adverse events associated with RIC procedures. The efficacy outcome included the incidence of SAP, changes of immunological profiles including mHLA-DR, TLR-2, and TLR-4 as well as other plasma parameters from routine blood tests.ResultsIn total, 46 patients aged 63.1 ± 12.5 years, were recruited (23 in each group). Overall, 19 patients in the RIC group and 22 patients in the control group completed this study. No severe adverse event was attributed to RIC procedures. The incidence of SAP was lower in the remote ischemic conditioning group (2 patients [10.5%]) than that in the control group (6 patients [27.3%]), but no significant difference was detected in both univariate and multivariate analysis (p = 0.249 and adjusted p = 0.666). No significance has been found in this pilot trial in the level of immunological profiles HLA-DR, TLR4 and TLR2 expressed on monocytes as well as blood parameters tested through routine blood tests between the two groups (p > 0.05). The IL-6 and IL-1β levels at day 5 after admission in the RIC group were lower than those in the control group (p < 0.05).InterpretationThis proof-of-concept pilot randomized controlled trial was to investigate RIC as a prevention method for SAP. Remote ischemic conditioning is safe in the prevention of SAP in patients with acute ischemic stroke. The preventive effect of RIC on SAP should be further validated in future studies.

The effects of frying process on the nutritional property, physicochemical quality, and in vitro digestibility of instant noodle products are investigated in this study. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR) were also used to explore the changes in the microstructure and protein transformation. Noodles, after the frying process, showed a lower proportion of carbohydrate, protein, fiber, and also total starch and digestible starch, but higher content of fat and resistant starch in the proximate analysis. The frying process was also considered to improve the texture, surface color, and sensory properties of instant noodle products, accompanied by better cooking quality, including shorter cooking time and lower cooking loss during the rehydration. The honeycomb-like, porous, and less uniformed structure, and also the higher levels of β-sheets and β-turns, and the lower proportion of α-helixes of protein structure from fried instant noodle was also observed. The in vitro digestibility of starch and protein were downregulated in the fried group (81.96% and 81.31, respectively, on average) compared with the non-fried group (97.58% and 88.78, respectively, on average). Thus, the frying process lowered the glycemic index and regulated protein secondary structure by inhibiting continuous digesting enzyme activity, generating starch-lipid complexes, and changing the levels of protein transformation. In conclusion, our findings will provide an innovative evaluation of the frying process on instant noodles and even other various starch-based prepared food products.

Background and PurposeMoyamoya disease (MMD) is a complicated cerebrovascular disease with recurrent ischemic or hemorrhagic events. This study aimed to prove the safety and efficacy of remote ischemic conditioning (RIC) on MMD.MethodsIn total, 34 patients with MMD participated in this pilot, prospective randomized controlled study for 1 year. 18 patients were allocated into the RIC group, and 16 patients accepted routine medical treatment only. RIC-related adverse events were recorded. The primary outcome was the improvement ratio of mean cerebral blood flow (mCBF) in middle cerebral artery territory measured by multidelay pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling, and the secondary outcomes were the cumulative incidence of major adverse cerebrovascular events (MACEs), the prevalence of stenotic-occlusive progression, and periventricular anastomosis at 1-year follow-up.ResultsIn total, 30 of the 34 patients with MMD completed the final follow-up (17 in the RIC group and 13 in the control group). No adverse events of RIC were observed. The mCBF improvement ratio of the RIC group was distinctively higher compared with the control group (mCBF−whole-brain: 0.16 ± 0.15 vs. −0.03 ± 0.13, p = 0.001). Stenotic-occlusive progression occurred in 11.8% hemispheres in the RIC group and 38.5% in the control group (p = 0.021). The incidence of MACE was 5.9% in the RIC group and 30.8% in the control group (hazard ratio with RIC, 0.174; 95% CI, 0.019–1.557; p = 0.118). No statistical difference was documented in the periventricular anastomosis between the two groups after treatment.ConclusionsRemote ischemic conditioning has the potential to be a safe and effective adjunctive therapy for patients with MMD largely due to improving cerebral blood flow and slowing the arterial progression of the stenotic-occlusive lesions. These findings warrant future studies in larger trials.

Based on the thermodynamic coupling model of multiple microelements in steels, the solid solution and coupling precipitation behavior of Nb-V-N-C system quaternary secondary phase was further verified in microalloyed steels, and combining with the engineering practice in high-strength spring steel FAS3550 containing nanoparticles. According to the thermodynamic calculations, the dissolved V (or Nb) content increased with the increasing addition V (or Nb), while decreased with the increase of addition C, N or Nb (or V). The complete dissolution temperature was 1314 °C, and the effective precipitation temperature of carbonitride was 1060 °C in 0.49%C-0.0060%N-0.03%Nb-0.12%V system spring steel FAS3550, the grains in steel began to coarsen above 1100 °C during heat treatment, and the (Nb, V)(C, N) nanoprecipitates were smaller than 100 nm. The strength and plasticity have been improved simultaneously, and its fatigue life has been increased by 13% after optimizing the heat treatment process.

Hydrocarbon fluid migration through faulted cap rocks was determined by comparing the maximum connected thickness of cap rocks required for hydrocarbon fluid migration and the actual values, since cap rocks are important in the study of hydrocarbon fluid distribution in petroliferous basins based on its migration mechanism(s). The maximum connected thickness required was identified by comparing the cap rocks, fault displacement, and oil/gas distribution. The hydrocarbon fluid at the Putaohua reservoir migrated to the overlying Saertu and Heidimiao reservoirs in the Bayan Chagan Area, northern Songliao Basin. This was predicted to demonstrate the validity of the method. The results show that the adjusted Putaohua oil reservoir was distributed near the Talahai fault and Bayanchagan fault, rather than the Gulong sag in the southwest of the study area, where oil migrated vertically through the Sapu cap rocks to the overlying Saertu reservoir. Thick mudstone cap rocks in the second member of the Nenjiang Formation made it difficult for hydrocarbon fluid to migrate to the Heidimiao reservoir. This agrees well with hydrocarbon fluid distribution at the Putaohua, Saertu, and Heidimiao reservoirs in the Bayan Chagan Area, indicating that this method is feasible for predicting hydrocarbon fluid migration through faulted cap rocks.

Foxtail millet has been traditionally considered to possess gastroprotective effects, but studies evaluating its use as a treatment for gastric ulcers are lacking. Here, we assessed the antiulcer effects of foxtail millet protein hydrolysate (FPH) and explored its mechanism by using blocking agents. In a mouse model of ethanol-induced gastric ulcers, pretreatment with FPH reduced the ulcerative lesion index, downregulated the expression of inflammatory cytokines in the gastric tissue, increased the activity of antioxidant enzymes, and improved the oxidative status. FPH increased constitutive the activity of nitric oxide synthase (cNOS), NO levels, and mucin expression in gastric mucosa, and inhibited the activation of the ET-1/PI3K/Akt pathway. In a mouse model of pyloric ligation-induced gastric ulcers, FPH inhibited gastric acid secretion and decreased the activity of gastric protease. Pretreatment of mice with the sulfhydryl blocker NEM and the NO synthesis inhibitor L-NAME abolished the gastroprotective effect of FPH, but not the KATP channel blocker glibenclamide and the PGE2 synthesis blocker indomethacin. Among the peptides identified in FPH, 10 peptides were predicted to have regulatory effects on the gastric mucosa, and the key sequences were GP and PG. The results confirmed the gastroprotective effect of FPH and revealed that its mechanism was through the regulation of gastric mucosal mucus and NO synthesis. This study supports the health effects of a millet-enriched diet and provides a basis for millet protein as a functional food to improve gastric ulcers and its related oxidative stress.

The Nb-V-Ti-N-C system microelements coupling precipitation behavior in high strength naval steel was thermodynamically analyzed. The effects of micron/nano particles on the microstructure, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance were also studied by an in situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) tensile test, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis, and electrochemical polarization measurements. The results show that the solid solution amount of Nb, V, Ti, N, or C decreases in the steels as the temperature decreases. Carbonitrides begin to precipitate at 1506.39 °C in N1 steel, and the carbonitrides are nano-scale. Meanwhile, carbonitrides begin to precipitate at 1628.74 °C in N2 steel, which is 116.69 °C higher than the corresponding liquidus temperature of 1512.05 °C; carbonitrides with micron scale are formed in the metal melt. The tensile test revealed that with the increase in titanium content from 0.05% to 0.1%, the strength increases while the elongation decreases. The in situ SEM test results indicated that lower plasticity are associated with the carbonitrides of micron-scale, which are the micro crack sources under stress. Polarization test results indicated that pitting corrosion may easily occur at the abnormally large-sized (Nb, V, Ti)(C, N) carbonitrides.

Taking tight oil in Gaotaizi and Fuyu oil layers of the Upper Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation in northern Songliao Basin as an example, based on analyses of nuclear magnetic resonance and high pressure mercury injection, experiment methods of supercritical carbon dioxide displacement and extraction are firstly employed to quantify crude oil mobility in tight sand reservoirs with different lithologies and oil contents. The results show that, under the conditions of simulating the Cretaceous Qingshankou Formation in the northern Songliao Basin at a temperature of 76−89 °C and a pressure of 35−42 MPa, the lower limit of the porosity of the movable oil is 4.4%, and the lower limit of the permeability is 0.015×10−3 μm2. The lower limit of the average pore throat radius is 21 nm. On this basis, a classification standard for three types of tight sand reservoirs is proposed. Type I reservoirs are characterized by the movable fluid saturation larger than 40%, the movable oil ratio (ratio of movable oil to total oil) greater than 30% and the starting pressure gradient in the range of 0.3−0.6 MPa/m; Type II reservoirs are characterized by the movable fluid saturation in the range of 10%–40%, the movable oil ratio in the range of 5%–30% and the starting pressure gradient in the range of 0.6–1.0 MPa/m; Type III reservoirs are characterized by the movable fluid saturation less than 10% in general, the movable oil ratio less than 5%, and the starting pressure gradient greater than 1.0 MPa/m. The fluid mobility in tight sand reservoirs is mainly affected by diagenesis and sedimentary environment. Reservoirs with depth lower than 2 000 m are dominated by type I reservoir, whereas those with greater depth are dominated by type I and II reservoirs. Reservoirs in inner delta-front facies are dominated by type I reservoir, whereas those in outer delta-front facies and shore-shallow lacustrine facies are dominated by type II and III reservoirs. Herein, we report a hybrid electrocatalyst consisting of Ru clusters trapped in NiCo-layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) as the basis for an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media. Benefiting from the fast water dissociation kinetics on NiCo-LDH and favorable H recombination on Ru, the resultant Ru-NiCo-LDH shows an extremely low HER overpotential of 28 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 42 mV dec−1. This superior catalytic activity can be ascribed to its high charge transfer ability and to the synergistic effect of the highly dispersed Ru and the NiCo-LDH. Moreover, we also found that the oxidized Ru incorporated in NiCo-LDH was entirely reduced to Ru0 under hydrogen-evolution conditions, which suggests that Ru0 is the true catalytically active phase responsible for the outstanding HER performance. Baicalein is a dietary flavonoid that exhibits a variety of intestinal pharmacological activities with limited oral bioavailability. In the present study, the intestinal pharmacokinetics of baicalein was determined by HPLC-ESI-MS/MS and HPLC-PDA analysis. After oral administration, the intestinal concentration of baicalein was peaked at 1 h, and the amount of baicalein in the intestine corresponded to 87%, 45%, and 20% of the administered dose at 1 h, 8 h, and 12 h, respectively. Glucuronidation, sulfation, and methylation metabolites were the major metabolites of baicalein in the small intestine, including duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Dehydroxylation, sulfation, and methylation metabolites were the major metabolites in the large intestine, including cecum and colon. In vitro, baicalein was transformed into its glucuronidation and methylation metabolites in hepatic and intestinal S9 fraction. The glucuronidation metabolites was hydrolyzed to baicalein by gut microbiota, but the dehydroxylation and methylation metabolites were stable during gut microbiota incubation.In conclusion, the intestinal concentration of baicalein can support its intestinal pharmacological activities, and the present study may provide useful information for understanding the bioactivities of flavonoids with limited systemic bioavailability.
