An ionization front (I-front) that propagates through an inhomogeneous medium is slowed down by self-shielding and recombinations. We perform cosmological radiation hydrodynamics simulations of the I-front propagation during the epoch of cosmic reionization. The simulations resolve gas in minihalos (halo mass $10^4\lesssim M_h[{\rm M}_\odot]\lesssim 10^8)$ that could dominate recombinations, in a computational volume that is large enough to sample the abundance of such halos. The numerical resolution is sufficient (gas particle mass $\sim 20{\rm M}_\odot$, spatial resolution $< 0.1\;{\rm ckpc}$) to allow accurate modelling of the hydrodynamic response of gas to photo-heating. We quantify the photo-evaporation time of minihalos as a function of $M_h$ and its dependence on the photo-ionization rate, $\Gamma_{-12}$, and the redshift of reionization, $z_i$. The recombination rate can be enhanced over that of a uniform medium by a factor $\sim 10-20$ early on. The peak value increases with $\Gamma_{-12}$ and decreases with $z_i$, due to the enhanced contribution from minihalos. The clumping factor, $c_r$, decreases to a factor of a few at $\sim 100\;{\rm Myr}$ after the passage of the I-front when the minihalos have been photo-evaporated; this asymptotic value depends only weakly on $\Gamma_{-12}$. Recombinations increase the required number of photons per baryon to reionize the Universe by 20-100 per cent, with the higher value occurring when $\Gamma_{-12}$ is high and $z_i$ is low. We complement the numerical simulations with simple analytical models for the evaporation rate and the inverse Str\"omgren layer. We present first results from the KMOS Ultra-deep Rotation Velocity Survey (KURVS), aimed at studying the outer rotation curves shape and dark matter content of 22 star-forming galaxies at $z\sim1.5$. These galaxies represent `typical' star-forming discs at $z \sim 1.5$, being located within the star-forming main sequence and stellar mass-size relation with stellar masses $9.5\leqslant$log$(M_{\star}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}})\leqslant11.5$. We extract individual rotation curves out to 4 times the effective radius, on average, or $\sim 10-15$ kpc. Most rotation curves are flat or rising between three- and six-disc scale radii. Only three objects with dispersion-dominated dynamics ($v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_0\sim0.2$) have declining outer rotation curves at more than 5$\sigma$ significance. After accounting for seeing and pressure support, the nine rotation-dominated discs with $v_{\rm rot}/\sigma_0\geqslant1.5$ have average dark matter fractions of $50 \pm 20\%$ at the effective radius, similar to local discs. Together with previous observations of star-forming galaxies at cosmic noon, our measurements suggest a trend of declining dark matter fraction with increasing stellar mass and stellar mass surface density at the effective radius. Simulated EAGLE galaxies are in quantitative agreement with observations up to log$(M_{\star}R_{\rm eff}^{-2}/\mathrm{M_{\odot}kpc^{-2}}) \sim 9.2$, and over-predict the dark matter fraction of galaxies with higher mass surface densities by a factor of $\sim 3$. We conclude that the dynamics of typical rotationally-supported discs at $z \sim 1.5$ is dominated by dark matter from effective radius scales, in broad agreement with cosmological models. The tension with observations at high stellar mass surface density suggests that the prescriptions for baryonic processes occurring in the most massive galaxies (such as bulge growth and quenching) need to be reassessed., Comment: 23 pages, 9 figures. Recent high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulations run with a variety of codes systematically predict large amounts of entropy in the intra-cluster medium at low redshift, leading to flat entropy profiles and a suppressed cool-core population. This prediction is at odds with X-ray observations of groups and clusters. We use a new implementation of the EAGLE galaxy formation model to investigate the sensitivity of the central entropy and the shape of the profiles to changes in the sub-grid model applied to a suite of zoom-in cosmological simulations of a group of mass $M_{500} = 8.8 \times 10^{12}~{\rm M}_\odot$ and a cluster of mass $2.9 \times 10^{14}~{\rm M}_\odot$. Using our reference model, calibrated to match the stellar mass function of field galaxies, we confirm that our simulated groups and clusters contain hot gas with too high entropy in their cores. Additional simulations run without artificial conduction, metal cooling or AGN feedback produce lower entropy levels but still fail to reproduce observed profiles. Conversely, the two objects run without supernova feedback show a significant entropy increase which can be attributed to excessive cooling and star formation. Varying the AGN heating temperature does not greatly affect the profile shape, but only the overall normalisation. Finally, we compared runs with four AGN heating schemes and obtained similar profiles, with the exception of bipolar AGN heating, which produces a higher and more uniform entropy distribution. Our study leaves open the question of whether the entropy core problem in simulations, and particularly the lack of power-law cool-core profiles, arise from incorrect physical assumptions, missing physical processes, or insufficient numerical resolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS on 2023 February 06. We use sparse regression methods (SRM) to build accurate and explainable models that predict the stellar mass of central and satellite galaxies as a function of properties of their host dark matter halos. SRM are machine learning algorithms that provide a framework for modelling the governing equations of a system from data. In contrast with other machine learning algorithms, the solutions of SRM methods are simple and depend on a relatively small set of adjustable parameters. We collect data from 35,459 galaxies from the EAGLE simulation using 19 redshift slices between $z=0$ and $z=4$ to parameterize the mass evolution of the host halos. Using an appropriate formulation of input parameters, our methodology can model satellite and central halos using a single predictive model that achieves the same accuracy as when predicted separately. This allows us to remove the somewhat arbitrary distinction between those two galaxy types and model them based only on their halo growth history. Our models can accurately reproduce the total galaxy stellar mass function and the stellar mass-dependent galaxy correlation functions ($\xi(r)$) of EAGLE. We show that our SRM model predictions of $\xi(r)$ is competitive with those from sub-halo abundance matching and might be comparable to results from extremely randomized trees. We suggest SRM as an encouraging approach for populating the halos of dark matter only simulations with galaxies and for generating mock catalogues that can be used to explore galaxy evolution or analyse forthcoming large-scale structure surveys., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

Active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback from accreting supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is an essential ingredient of galaxy formation simulations. The orbital evolution of SMBHs is affected by dynamical friction that cannot be predicted self-consistently by contemporary simulations of galaxy formation in representative volumes. Instead, such simulations typically use a simple "repositioning" of SMBHs, but the effects of this approach on SMBH and galaxy properties have not yet been investigated systematically. Based on a suite of smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations with the SWIFT code and a Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton subgrid gas accretion model, we investigate the impact of repositioning on SMBH growth and on other baryonic components through AGN feedback. Across at least a factor ~1000 in mass resolution, SMBH repositioning (or an equivalent approach) is a necessary prerequisite for AGN feedback; without it, black hole growth is negligible. Limiting the effective repositioning speed to $\lesssim$ 10 km/s delays the onset of AGN feedback and severely limits its impact on stellar mass growth in the centre of massive galaxies. Repositioning has three direct physical consequences. It promotes SMBH mergers and thus accelerates their initial growth. In addition, it raises the peak density of the ambient gas and reduces the SMBH velocity relative to it, giving a combined boost to the accretion rate that can reach many orders of magnitude. We present a new radiative transfer method (SPH-M1RT) that is coupled dynamically with smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH). We implement it in the (task-based parallel) SWIFT galaxy simulation code but it can be straightforwardly implemented in other SPH codes. Our moment-based method simultaneously solves the radiation energy and flux equations in SPH, making it adaptive in space and time. We modify the M1 closure relation to stabilize radiation fronts in the optically thin limit. We also introduce anisotropic artificial viscosity and high-order artificial diffusion schemes, which allow the code to handle radiation transport accurately in both the optically thin and optically thick regimes. Non-equilibrium thermo-chemistry is solved using a semi-implicit sub-cycling technique. The computational cost of our method is independent of the number of sources and can be lowered further by using the reduced speed of light approximation. We demonstrate the robustness of our method by applying it to a set of standard tests from the cosmological radiative transfer comparison project of Iliev et al. Sparse regression algorithms have been proposed as the appropriate framework to model the governing equations of a system from data, without needing prior knowledge of the underlying physics. In this work, we use sparse regression to build an accurate and explainable model of the stellar mass of central galaxies given properties of their host dark matter (DM) halo. Our data set comprises 9,521 central galaxies from the EAGLE hydrodynamic simulation. By matching the host halos to a DM-only simulation, we collect the halo mass and specific angular momentum at present time and for their main progenitors in 10 redshift bins from $z=0$ to $z=4$. The principal component of our governing equation is a third-order polynomial of the host halo mass, which models the stellar-mass halo-mass relation. The scatter about this relation is driven by the halo mass evolution and is captured by second and third-order correlations of the halo mass evolution with the present halo mass. An advantage of sparse regression approaches is that unnecessary terms are removed. Although we include information on halo specific angular momentum, these parameters are discarded by our methodology. This suggests that halo angular momentum has little connection to galaxy formation efficiency. Our model has a root mean square error (RMSE) of $0.167 \log_{10}(M^*/M_\odot)$, and accurately reproduces both the stellar mass function and central galaxy correlation function of EAGLE. The methodology appears to be an encouraging approach for populating the halos of DM-only simulations with galaxies, and we discuss the next steps that are required., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a ubiquitous numerical method for solving the fluid equations, and is prized for its conservation properties, natural adaptivity, and simplicity. We introduce the Sphenix SPH scheme, which was designed with three key goals in mind: to work well with sub-grid physics modules that inject energy, be highly computationally efficient (both in terms of compute and memory), and to be Lagrangian. Sphenix uses a Density-Energy equation of motion, along with variable artificial viscosity and conduction, including limiters designed to work with common sub-grid models of galaxy formation. In particular, we present and test a novel limiter that prevents conduction across shocks, preventing spurious radiative losses in feedback events. Sphenix is shown to solve many difficult test problems for traditional SPH, including fluid mixing and vorticity conservation, and it is shown to produce convergent behaviour in all tests where this is appropriate. Crucially, we use the same parameters within Sphenix for the various switches throughout, to demonstrate the performance of the scheme as it would be used in production simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) is a Lagrangian method for solving the fluid equations that is commonplace in astrophysics, prized for its natural adaptivity and stability. The choice of variable to smooth in SPH has been the topic of contention, with smoothed pressure (P-SPH) being introduced to reduce errors at contact discontinuities relative to smoothed density schemes. Smoothed pressure schemes produce excellent results in isolated hydrodynamics tests; in more complex situations however, especially when coupling to the `sub-grid' physics and multiple time-stepping used in many state-of-the-art astrophysics simulations, these schemes produce large force errors that can easily evade detection as they do not manifest as energy non-conservation. Here two scenarios are evaluated: the injection of energy into the fluid (common for stellar feedback) and radiative cooling. In the former scenario, force and energy conservation errors manifest (of the same order as the injected energy), and in the latter large force errors that change rapidly over a few timesteps lead to instability in the fluid (of the same order as the energy lost to cooling). Potential ways to remedy these issues are explored with solutions generally leading to large increases in computational cost. Schemes using a Density-based formulation do not create these instabilities and as such it is recommended that they are preferred over Pressure-based solutions when combined with an energy diffusion term to reduce errors at contact discontinuities., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS; comments to be sent to joshua.borrow@durham.ac.uk

The past decade has seen significant progress in understanding galaxy formation and evolution using large-scale cosmological simulations. While these simulations produce galaxies in overall good agreement with observations, they employ different sub-grid models for galaxies and supermassive black holes (BHs). We investigate the impact of the sub-grid models on the BH mass properties of the Illustris, TNG100, TNG300, Horizon-AGN, EAGLE, and SIMBA simulations, focusing on the M_BH-M_star relation and the BH mass function. All simulations predict tight M_BH-M_star relations, and struggle to produce the lowest (M_BH< 10^7.5 Msun) in galaxies of M_star~10^10.5-10^11.5 Msun. While the time evolution of the mean M_BH-M_star relation is mild (<1 dex in BH mass for 010^9 Msun in most of the simulations. The BH mass function is dominated by efficiently accreting BHs (log10 f_Edd >-2$) at high redshifts, and transitions progressively from the high-mass to the low-mass end to be governed by inactive BHs. The transition time and the contribution of active BHs are different among the simulations, and can be used to evaluate models against observations., Comment: Published version - MNRAS

The abundance and distribution of metals in galaxy clusters contains valuable information about their chemical history and evolution. By looking at how metallicity evolves with redshift, it is possible to constrain the different metal production channels. We use the C-EAGLE clusters, a sample of 30 high resolution ($m_{gas} \simeq 1.8\times 10^{6}$ M$_{\odot}$) cluster zoom simulations, to investigate the redshift evolution of metallicity, with particular focus on the cluster outskirts. The early enrichment model, in which the majority of metals are produced in the core of cluster progenitors at high redshift, suggests that metals in cluster outskirts have not significantly evolved since $z=2$. With the C-EAGLE sample, we find reasonable agreement with the early enrichment model as there is very little scatter in the metallicity abundance at large radius across the whole sample, out to at least $z=2$. The exception is Fe for which the radial dependence of metallicity was found to evolve at low redshift as a result of being mainly produced by Type Ia supernovae, which are more likely to be formed at later times than core-collapse supernovae. We also found considerable redshift evolution of metal abundances in the cores of the C-EAGLE clusters which has not been seen in other simulations or observation based metallicity studies. Since we find this evolution to be driven by accretion of low metallicity gas, it suggests that the interaction between outflowing, AGN heated material and the surrounding gas is important for determining the core abundances in clusters., Comment: 18 pages, 16 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The role of galactic wind recycling represents one of the largest unknowns in galaxy evolution, as any contribution of recycling to galaxy growth is largely degenerate with the inflow rates of first-time infalling material, and the rates with which outflowing gas and metals are driven from galaxies. We present measurements of the efficiency of wind recycling from the EAGLE cosmological simulation project, leveraging the statistical power of large-volume simulations that reproduce a realistic galaxy population. We study wind recycling at the halo scale, i.e. gas that has been ejected beyond the halo virial radius, and at the galaxy scale, i.e. gas that has been ejected from the ISM to at least $\approx 10 \, \%$ of the virial radius (thus excluding smaller-scale galactic fountains). Galaxy-scale wind recycling is generally inefficient, with a characteristic return timescale that is comparable or longer than a Hubble time, and with an efficiency that clearly peaks at the characteristic halo mass of $M_{200} = 10^{12} \, \mathrm{M_\odot}$. Correspondingly, the majority of gas being accreted onto galaxies in EAGLE is infalling for the first time. At the halo scale, the efficiency of recycling onto haloes differs by orders of magnitude from values assumed by semi-analytic galaxy formation models. Differences in the efficiency of wind recycling with other hydrodynamical simulations are currently difficult to assess, but are likely smaller. We are able to show that the fractional contribution of wind recycling to galaxy growth is smaller in EAGLE than in some other simulations. We find that cumulative first-time gas accretion rates at the virial radius are reduced relative to the expectation from dark matter accretion for haloes with mass, $M_{200} < 10^{12} \, \mathrm{M_\odot}$, indicating efficient preventative feedback on halo scales., Comment: MNRAS accepted, 22 pages

We use a set of 45 simulated clusters with a wide mass range ($8\times 10^{13} < M_{500}~[$M$_{\odot}]~< 2\times 10^{15}$) to investigate the effect of varying hydrodynamics flavours on cluster mass estimates. The cluster zooms were simulated using the same cosmological models as the BAHAMAS and C-EAGLE projects, leading to differences in both the hydrodynamic solvers and the subgrid physics but still producing clusters which broadly match observations. At the same mass resolution as BAHAMAS, for the most massive clusters ($M_{500} > 10^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$), we find changes in the SPH method produce the greatest differences in the final halo, while the subgrid models dominate at lower mass. By calculating the mass of all of the clusters using different permutations of the pressure, temperature and density profiles, created with either the true simulated data or mock spectroscopic data, we find that the spectroscopic temperature causes a bias in the hydrostatic mass estimates which increases with the mass of the cluster, regardless of the SPH flavour used. For the most massive clusters, the estimated mass of the cluster using spectroscopic density and temperature profiles is found to be as low as 50 per cent of the true mass compared to $\sim$ 90 per cent for low mass clusters. When including a correction for non-thermal pressure, the spectroscopic hydrostatic mass estimates are less biased on average and the mass dependence of the bias is reduced, although the scatter in the measurements does increase., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures. We present measurements of galactic outflow rates from the EAGLE suite of cosmological simulations. We find that gas is removed from the interstellar medium (ISM) of central galaxies with a dimensionless mass loading factor that scales approximately with circular velocity as $V_{\mathrm{c}}^{-3/2}$ in the low-mass regime where stellar feedback dominates. Feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) causes an upturn in the mass loading for halo masses $> 10^{12} \, \mathrm{M_\odot}$. We find that more gas outflows through the halo virial radius than is removed from the ISM of galaxies, particularly at low redshift, implying substantial mass loading within the circum-galactic medium (CGM). Outflow velocities span a wide range at a given halo mass/redshift, and on average increase positively with redshift and halo mass up to $M_{200} \sim 10^{12} \, \mathrm{M_\odot}$. Outflows exhibit a bimodal flow pattern on circum-galactic scales, aligned with the galactic minor axis. We present a number of like-for-like comparisons to outflow rates from other recent cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, and show that comparing the propagation of galactic winds as a function of radius reveals substantial discrepancies between different models. Relative to some other simulations, EAGLE favours a scenario for stellar feedback where agreement with the galaxy stellar mass function is achieved by removing smaller amounts of gas from the ISM, but with galactic winds that then propagate and entrain ambient gas out to larger radii., Comment: MNRAS accepted

We address the issue of numerical convergence in cosmological smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulations using a suite of runs drawn from the EAGLE project. Our simulations adopt subgrid models that produce realistic galaxy populations at a fiducial mass and force resolution, but systematically vary the latter in order to study their impact on galaxy properties. We provide several analytic criteria that help guide the selection of gravitational softening for hydrodynamical simulations, and present results from runs that both adhere to and deviate from them. Unlike dark matter-only simulations, hydrodynamical simulations exhibit a strong sensitivity to gravitational softening, and care must be taken when selecting numerical parameters. Our results--which focus mainly on star formation histories, galaxy stellar mass functions and sizes--illuminate three main considerations. First, softening imposes a minimum resolved escape speed, $v_\epsilon$, due to the binding energy between gas particles. Runs that adopt such small softening lengths that $v_\epsilon \gt 10\,{\rm km s^{-1}}$ (the sound speed in ionised $\sim 10^4\,{\rm K}$ gas) suffer from reduced effects of photo-heating. Second, feedback from stars or active galactic nuclei may suffer from numerical over-cooling if the gravitational softening length is chosen below a critical value, $\epsilon_{\rm eFB}$. Third, we note that small softening lengths exacerbate the segregation of stars and dark matter particles in halo centres, often leading to the counter-intuitive result that galaxy sizes {\em increase} as softening is reduced. We introduce a simple analytic model of galaxy formation that links the growth of dark matter haloes in a cosmological background to the build-up of stellar mass within them. The model aims to identify the physical processes that drive the galaxy-halo co-evolution through cosmic time. The model restricts the role of baryonic astrophysics to setting the relation between galaxies and their haloes. Using this approach, galaxy properties can be directly predicted from the growth of their host dark matter haloes. We explore models in which the effective star formation efficiency within haloes is a function of mass (or virial temperature) and independent of time. Despite its simplicity, the model reproduces self-consistently the shape and evolution of the cosmic star formation rate density, the specific star formation rate of galaxies, and the galaxy stellar mass function, both at the present time and at high redshifts. By systematically varying the effective star formation efficiency in the model, we explore the emergence of the characteristic shape of the galaxy stellar mass function. The origin of the observed double Schechter function at low redshifts is naturally explained by two efficiency regimes in the stellar to halo mass relation, namely, a stellar feedback regulated stage, and a supermassive black hole regulated stage. We present an analysis of the gas outflow energetics of 529 main-sequence star-forming galaxies at z~1 using KMOS observations of the broad, underlying H-alpha and forbidden lines of [N II] and [S II]. Based on the stacked spectra for a sample with median star-formation rates and stellar masses of SFR ~ 7 Mo/yr and M* = (1.0+/-0.1)x10^10 Mo respectively, we derive a typical mass outflow rate of dM/dt = 1-4 Mo/yr and a mass loading of dM/dt/SFR = 0.2--0.4. The mass loading of the wind does not show a strong trend with star-formation rate over the range SFR ~ 2--20 Mo/yr, although we identify a trend with stellar mass such that dM/dt/SFR ~ M*^(0.26+/-0.07). Finally, we find that the line width of the broad H-alpha increases with disk circular velocity with a sub-linear scaling relation FWHM_broad ~ v^(0.21+/-0.05). As a result of this behavior, in the lowest mass galaxies (M* < 10^10 Mo), a significant fraction of the outflowing gas should have sufficient velocity to escape the gravitational potential of the halo whilst in the highest mass galaxies (M* > 10^10 Mo) most of the gas will be retained, flowing back on to the galaxy disk at later times., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS (14 pages, 8 figures). We present stellar specific angular momentum $j_*$ measurements of two $z\sim 1.5$ galaxies in the KGES sample and 12 DYNAMO $z\sim 0.1$ analogues of high-redshift galaxies. We combine natural seeing integral field spectroscopic data to trace line emission out to high multiples of effective radius $r_e$, with adaptive optics assisted Keck/OSIRIS observations to trace the rapid rise in rotation curve in the inner regions. Our spaxel-wise integration method gives results that are on average within measurement uncertainty of the traditional rotation curve model method. At $z\sim 0$, combining GMOS and OSIRIS datasets improves the measurement uncertainty in $j_*$ from 13\% (GMOS only) or 16\% (OSIRIS only) to 10\%. At $z\sim 1.5$, systematics allow for at best 20\% uncertainty on $j_*$. DYNAMO analogues of high-$z$ galaxies have low $j_*$ for their stellar mass $M_*$, and low bulge-to-total light ratio $\beta$ for their $j_*/M_*$. The high-$z$ galaxy COSMOS 127977 has $j_*/M_*$ consistent with normal local disk galaxies, while UDS 78317 is consistent with local analogues. However, our high-resolution OSIRIS data reveal that UDS 78317 may be a merging system. We report a relationship between distance to the $\beta-j_*/M_*$ plane and the ratio of velocity dispersion to rotational velocity $\sigma/v_{max}$, where galaxies that deviate more from the plane are more dispersion-dominated due to turbulence. We exploit EAGLE, a cosmological hydrodynamical simulation, to reproduce the selection of the observed sub-millimeter (submm) galaxy population by selecting the model galaxies at $z \geq 1$ with mock submm fluxes $S_{850} \geq 1$ mJy. There is a reasonable agreement between the galaxies within this sample and the properties of the observed submm population, such as their star formation rates (SFRs) at $z<3$, redshift distribution and many integrated galaxy properties. We find that the bulk of the $S_{850} \geq 1$ mJy model population is at $z = 2.5$, and that they are massive galaxies ($M_* \sim 10^{11}$ Msol) with high dust masses ($M_{\mathrm{dust}} \sim 10^{8}$ Msol), gas fractions ($f_{\mathrm{gas}} \approx 50$%) and SFRs ($\dot M_* \approx 100$ Msol/yr). They have major and minor merger fractions similar to the general population, suggesting that mergers are not the primary driver of the model submm galaxies. Instead, the $S_{850} \geq 1$ mJy model galaxies yield high SFRs primarily because they maintain a significant gas reservoir as a result of hosting an undermassive black hole. In addition, we find that not all highly star-forming EAGLE galaxies have submm fluxes $S_{850} > 1$ mJy. Thus, we investigate the nature of $z \geq 1$ highly star-forming Submm-Faint galaxies (i.e., $\dot M_* \geq 80$ Msol/yr but $S_{850}< 1$ mJy). We find they are similar to the model submm galaxies; being gas rich and hosting undermassive black holes, however they are typically lower mass ($M_* \sim 10^{10}$ Msol) and are at higher redshifts ($z>4$). These typically higher-$z$ galaxies show stronger evidence for having been triggered by major mergers, and critically, they are likely missed by current submm surveys due to their higher dust temperatures. This suggests a potentially even larger contribution to the SFR density at $z > 3$ from dust-obscured systems than implied by current observations., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We investigate the disruption of group and cluster satellite galaxies with total mass (dark matter plus baryons) above 10^10 M_sun in the Hydrangea simulations, a suite of 24 high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamical zoom-in simulations based on the EAGLE model. The simulations predict that ~50 per cent of satellites survive to redshift z = 0, with higher survival fractions in massive clusters than in groups and only small differences between baryonic and pure N-body simulations. For clusters, up to 90 per cent of galaxy disruption occurs in lower-mass sub-groups (i.e., during pre-processing); 96 per cent of satellites in massive clusters that were accreted at z < 2 and have not been pre-processed survive. Of those satellites that are disrupted, only a few per cent merge with other satellites, even in low-mass groups. The survival fraction changes rapidly from less than 10 per cent of those accreted at high z to more than 90 per cent at low z. This shift, which reflects faster disruption of satellites accreted at higher z, happens at lower z for more massive galaxies and those accreted onto less massive haloes. The disruption of satellite galaxies is found to correlate only weakly with their pre-accretion baryon content, star formation rate, and size, so that surviving galaxies are nearly unbiased in these properties. We study the impact of numerical parameters on the properties of cold dark matter haloes formed in collisionless cosmological simulations. We quantify convergence in the median spherically-averaged circular velocity profiles for haloes of widely varying particle number, as well as in the statistics of their structural scaling relations and mass functions. In agreement with prior work focused on single haloes, our results suggest that cosmological simulations yield robust halo properties for a wide range of gravitational softening parameters, $\epsilon$, provided: 1) $\epsilon$ is not larger than a "convergence radius", $r_{\rm conv}$, which is dictated by 2-body relaxation and determined by particle number, and 2) a sufficient number of timesteps are taken to accurately resolve particle orbits with short dynamical times. Provided these conditions are met, median circular velocity profiles converge to within $\approx 10$ per cent for radii beyond which the local 2-body relaxation timescale exceeds the Hubble time by a factor $\kappa\equiv t_{\rm relax}/t_{\rm H}\gt 0.177$, with better convergence attained for higher $\kappa$. We provide analytic estimates of $r_{\rm conv}$ that build on previous attempts in two ways: first, by highlighting its explicit (but weak) softening-dependence and, second, by providing a simpler criterion in which $r_{\rm conv}$ is determined entirely by the mean inter-particle spacing, $l$; for example, better than $10$ per cent convergence in circular velocity for $r\gt 0.05\,l$. We investigate the connection between the morphology and internal kinematics of the stellar component of central galaxies with mass $M_\star > {10}^{9.5} {\rm M}_\odot$ in the EAGLE simulations. We compare several kinematic diagnostics commonly used to describe simulated galaxies, and find good consistency between them. We model the structure of galaxies as ellipsoids and quantify their morphology via the ratios of their principal axes. We show that the differentiation of blue star-forming and red quiescent galaxies using morphological diagnostics can be achieved with similar efficacy to the use of kinematical diagnostics, but only if one is able to measure both the flattening and the triaxiality of the galaxy. Flattened oblate galaxies exhibit greater rotational support than their spheroidal counterparts, but there is significant scatter in the relationship between morphological and kinematical diagnostics, such that kinematically-similar galaxies can exhibit a broad range of morphologies. The scatter in the relationship between the flattening and the ratio of the rotation and dispersion velocities ($v/\sigma$) correlates strongly with the anisotropy of the stellar velocity dispersion: at fixed $v/\sigma$, flatter galaxies exhibit greater dispersion in the plane defined by the intermediate and major axes than along the minor axis, indicating that the morphology of simulated galaxies is influenced significantly by the structure of their velocity dispersion. The simulations reveal that this anisotropy correlates with the intrinsic morphology of the galaxy's inner dark matter halo, i.e. the halo's morphology that emerges in the absence of dissipative baryonic physics. Dark matter particles may decay, emitting photons. Drawing on the EAGLE family of hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation -- including the APOSTLE and C-EAGLE simulations -- we assess the systematic uncertainties and scatter on the decay flux from different galaxy classes, from Milky Way satellites to galaxy clusters, and compare our results to studies of the 3.55~keV line. We demonstrate that previous detections and non-detections of this line are consistent with a dark matter interpretation. For example, in our simulations the width of the the dark matter decay line for Perseus-analogue galaxy clusters lies in the range 1300-1700~\kms. Therefore, the non-detection of the 3.55~keV line in the centre of the Perseus cluster by the {\it Hitomi} collaboration is consistent with detections by other instruments. We also consider trends with stellar and halo mass and evaluate the scatter in the expected fluxes arising from the anisotropic halo mass distribution and from object-to-object variations. We provide specific predictions for observations with {\it XMM-Newton} and with the planned X-ray telescopes {\it XRISM} and {\it ATHENA}. We present recalibrations of the GALFORM semi-analytical model of galaxy formation in a new N-body simulation with the Planck cosmology. The Planck Millennium simulation uses more than 128 billion particles to resolve the matter distribution in a cube of $800$ Mpc on a side, which contains more than 77 million dark matter haloes with mass greater than $2.12 \times 10^{9} h^{-1} {\rm M_{\odot}}$ at the present day. Only minor changes to a very small number of model parameters are required in the recalibration. We present predictions for the atomic hydrogen content (HI) of dark matter halos, which is a key input into the calculation of the HI intensity mapping signal expected from the large-scale structure of the Universe. We find that the HI mass $-$ halo mass relation displays a clear break at the halo mass above which AGN heating suppresses gas cooling, $\approx 3 \times 10^{11} h^{-1} M_{\rm \odot}$. Below this halo mass, the HI content of haloes is dominated by the central galaxy; above this mass it is the combined HI content of satellites that prevails. We find that the HI mass - halo mass relation changes little with redshift up to $z=3$. The bias of HI sources shows a scale dependence that gets more pronounced with increasing redshift., Comment: 17 pages, accepted by MNRAS

Cosmological simulations require the use of a multiple time-stepping scheme. Without such a scheme, cosmological simulations would be impossible due to their high level of dynamic range; over eleven orders of magnitude in density. Such a large dynamic range leads to a range of over four orders of magnitude in time-step, which presents a significant load-balancing challenge. In this work, the extreme adaptivity that cosmological simulations present is tackled in three main ways through the use of the code SWIFT. First, an adaptive mesh is used to ensure that only the relevant particles are interacted in a given time-step. Second, task-based parallelism is used to ensure efficient load-balancing within a single node, using pthreads and SIMD vectorisation. Finally, a domain decomposition strategy is presented, using the graph domain decomposition library METIS, that bisects the work that must be performed by the simulation between nodes using MPI. These three strategies are shown to give SWIFT near-perfect weak-scaling characteristics, only losing 25% performance when scaling from 1 to 4096 cores on a representative problem, whilst being more than 30x faster than the de-facto standard Gadget-2 code.

We use the EAGLE simulations to study the oxygen abundance gradients of gas discs in galaxies within the stellar mass range [10^9.5, 10^10.8]Mo at z=0. The estimated median oxygen gradient is -0.011 (0.002) dex kpc^-1, which is shallower than observed. No clear trend between simulated disc oxygen gradient and galaxy stellar mass is found when all galaxies are considered. However, the oxygen gradient shows a clear correlation with gas disc size so that shallower abundance slopes are found for increasing gas disc sizes. Positive oxygen gradients are detected for ~40 per cent of the analysed gas discs, with a slight higher frequency in low mass galaxies. Galaxies that have quiet merger histories show a positive correlation between oxygen gradient and stellar mass, so that more massive galaxies tend to have shallower metallicity gradients. At high stellar mass, there is a larger fraction of rotational-dominated galaxies in low density regions. At low stellar mass, non-merger galaxies show a large variety of oxygen gradients and morphologies. The normalization of the disc oxygen gradients in non-merger galaxies by the effective radius removes the trend with stellar mass. Conversely, galaxies that experienced mergers show a weak relation between oxygen gradient and stellar mass. Additionally, the analysed EAGLE discs show no clear dependence of the oxygen gradients on local environment, in agreement with current observational findings., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures. We investigate the rapid growth phase of supermassive black holes (BHs) within the hydrodynamical cosmological \eagle simulation. This non-linear phase of BH growth occurs within $\sim$$L_{*}$ galaxies, embedded between two regulatory states of the galaxy host: in sub $L_{*}$ galaxies efficient stellar feedback regulates the gas inflow onto the galaxy and significantly reduces the growth of the central BH, while in galaxies more massive than $L_{*}$ efficient AGN feedback regulates the gas inflow onto the galaxy and curbs further non-linear BH growth. We find evolving critical galaxy and halo mass scales at which rapid BH growth begins. Galaxies in the low-redshift Universe transition into the rapid BH growth phase in haloes that are approximately an order of magnitude more massive than their high-redshift counterparts (\M{200} $\approx 10^{12.4}$~\Msol at $z \approx 0$ decreasing to \M{200} $\approx 10^{11.2}$~\Msol at $z \approx 6$). Instead, BHs enter the rapid growth phase at a fixed critical halo virial temperature ($T_{\mathrm{vir}} \approx 10^{5.6}$~K). We additionally show that major galaxy--galaxy interactions ($\mu \geq \frac{1}{4}$, where $\mu$ is the stellar mass ratio) play a substantial role in triggering the rapid growth phase of BHs in the low-redshift Universe, whilst potentially having a lower influence at high redshift. Approximately 40\% of BHs that initiate the rapid BH growth phase at $z \approx 0$ do so within $\pm 0.5$ dynamical times of a major galaxy--galaxy merger, a fourfold increase above what is expected from the background merger rate. We find that minor mergers ($\frac{1}{10} \leq \mu < \frac{1}{4}$) have a substantially lower influence in triggering the rapid growth phase at all epochs., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We study the correlation between stellar mass and stellar metallicity in the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. At a given stellar mass, simulated galaxies with lower stellar metallicities show, on average, higher gas fractions, higher specific star formation rates and younger stellar populations. Active galactic nuclei feedback seems to play an important role on the determination of the stellar metallicity at high stellar masses. In general, simulated systems follow a well-defined anticorrelation between stellar metallicity and gas fraction, which does not evolve significantly with redshift. The EAGLE simulation suite has previously been used to investigate the relationship between the stellar mass of galaxies, $M_{*}$, and the properties of dark matter halos, using the hydrodynamical reference simulation combined with a dark matter only (DMO) simulation having identical initial conditions. The stellar masses of central galaxies in halos with $M_{\mathrm{200c}} > 10^{11} \mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ were shown to correlate with the DMO halo maximum circular velocity, with $\approx 0.2$ dex of scatter that is uncorrelated with other DMO halo properties. Here we revisit the origin of the scatter in the $M_{*}-V_{\mathrm{max, DMO}}$ relation in EAGLE at $z = 0.1$. We find that the scatter in $M_{*}$ correlates with the mean age of the galaxy stellar population such that more massive galaxies at fixed $V_{\mathrm{max, DMO}}$ are younger. The scatter in the stellar mass and mean stellar population age results from variation in the baryonic mass, $M_{\mathrm{bary}} = M_{\mathrm{gas}} + M_{*}$, of the galaxies' progenitors at fixed halo mass and concentration. At the redshift of peak correlation ($z \approx 1$), the progenitor baryonic mass accounts for $75\%$ of the variance in the $z=0.1$ $M_{*}-V_{\mathrm{max, DMO}}$ relation. The scatter in the baryonic mass, in turn, is primarily set by differences in feedback strength and gas accretion over the course of the evolution of each halo., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures. We look into the abundance of Dual AGN in the largest hydrodynamical simulation from the EAGLE project. We define a Dual AGN as two active black holes (BHs) with a separation below 30 kpc. We find that only 1 per cent of AGN with $\LhX\geq 10^{42}\ergs$ are part of a Dual AGN system at $z=0.8-1$. During the evolution of a typical binary BH system, the rapid variability of the hard X-ray luminosity on Myr time-scales severely limits the detectability of Dual AGN. To quantify this effect, we calculate a probability of detection, $t_{\rm on}/t_{\rm 30}$, where $t_{\rm 30}$ is the time in which the two black holes are separated at distances below 30 kpc and $t_{\rm on}$, the time that both AGN are visible (e.g. when both AGN have $\LhX\geq 10^{42}\ergs$) in this period. We find that the average fraction of visible Dual systems is 3 per cent. The visible Dual AGN distribution as a function of BH separation presents a pronounced peak at $\sim 20$ kpc that can be understood as a result of the rapid orbital decay of the host galaxies after their first encounter. We also find that $75$ per cent of the host galaxies have recently undergone or are undergoing a merger with stellar mass ratio $\geq 0.1$. In particle-based simulations, neighbour finding (i.e finding pairs of particles to interact within a given range) is the most time consuming part of the computation. One of the best such algorithms, which can be used for both Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations, is the pseudo-Verlet list algorithm. This algorithm, however, does not vectorise trivially, and hence makes it difficult to exploit SIMD-parallel architectures. In this paper, we present several novel modifications as well as a vectorisation strategy for the algorithm which lead to overall speed-ups over the scalar version of the algorithm of 2.24x for the AVX instruction set (SIMD width of 8), 2.43x for AVX2, and 4.07x for AVX-512 (SIMD width of 16)., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures. Models of the very early universe, including inflationary models, are argued to produce varying universe domains with different values of fundamental constants and cosmic parameters. Using the cosmological hydrodynamical simulation code from the eagle collaboration, we investigate the effect of the cosmological constant on the formation of galaxies and stars. We simulate universes with values of the cosmological constant ranging from Lambda = 0 to Lambda_0 = 300, where Lambda_0 is the value of the cosmological constant in our Universe. Because the global star formation rate in our Universe peaks at t = 3.5 Gyr, before the onset of accelerating expansion, increases in Lambda of even an order of magnitude have only a small effect on the star formation history and efficiency of the universe. We use our simulations to predict the observed value of the cosmological constant, given a measure of the multiverse. Whether the cosmological constant is successfully predicted depends crucially on the measure. The impact of the cosmological constant on the formation of structure in the universe does not seem to be a sharp enough function of Lambda to explain its observed value alone., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables. We present a comparison of nine galaxy formation models, eight semi-analytical and one halo occupation distribution model, run on the same underlying cold dark matter simulation (cosmological box of co-moving width 125$h^{-1}$ Mpc, with a dark-matter particle mass of $1.24\times 10^9 h^{-1}$ Msun) and the same merger trees. While their free parameters have been calibrated to the same observational data sets using two approaches, they nevertheless retain some 'memory' of any previous calibration that served as the starting point (especially for the manually-tuned models). For the first calibration, models reproduce the observed z = 0 galaxy stellar mass function (SMF) within 3-{\sigma}. The second calibration extended the observational data to include the z = 2 SMF alongside the z~0 star formation rate function, cold gas mass and the black hole-bulge mass relation. Encapsulating the observed evolution of the SMF from z = 2 to z = 0 is found to be very hard within the context of the physics currently included in the models. We finally use our calibrated models to study the evolution of the stellar-to-halo mass (SHM) ratio. For all models we find that the peak value of the SHM relation decreases with redshift. However, the trends seen for the evolution of the peak position as well as the mean scatter in the SHM relation are rather weak and strongly model dependent. We present the first simulated galaxy clusters (M_200 > 10^14 Msun) with both self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) and baryonic physics. They exhibit a greater diversity in both dark matter and stellar density profiles than their counterparts in simulations with collisionless dark matter (CDM), which is generated by the complex interplay between dark matter self-interactions and baryonic physics. Despite variations in formation history, we demonstrate that analytical Jeans modelling predicts the SIDM density profiles remarkably well, and the diverse properties of the haloes can be understood in terms of their different final baryon distributions., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, v2 matches accepted MNRAS: Letters version

We investigate the origin of the Hubble sequence by analysing the evolution of the kinematic morphologies of central galaxies in the EAGLE cosmological simulation. By separating each galaxy into disk and spheroidal stellar components and tracing their evolution along the merger tree, we find that the morphology of galaxies follows a common evolutionary trend. We distinguish three phases of galaxy formation. These phases are determined primarily by mass, rather than redshift. For M_star < 10^{9.5} M_sun galaxies grow in a disorganised way, resulting in a morphology that is dominated by random stellar motions. This phase is dominated by in-situ star formation, partly triggered by mergers. In the mass range 10^{9.5} M_sun < M_star < 10^{10.5} M_sun galaxies evolve towards a disk-dominated morphology, driven by in-situ star formation. The central spheroid (i.e. the bulge) at z = 0 consists mostly of stars that formed in-situ, yet the formation of the bulge is to a large degree associated with mergers. Finally, at M_star > 10^{10.5} M_sun growth through in-situ star formation slows down considerably and galaxies transform towards a more spheroidal morphology. This transformation is driven more by the buildup of spheroids than by the destruction of disks. We investigate the effect of the accelerated expansion of the Universe due to a cosmological constant, $\Lambda$, on the cosmic star formation rate. We utilise hydrodynamical simulations from the EAGLE suite, comparing a $\Lambda$CDM Universe to an Einstein-de Sitter model with $\Lambda=0$. Despite the differences in the rate of growth of structure, we find that dark energy, at its observed value, has negligible impact on star formation in the Universe. We study these effects beyond the present day by allowing the simulations to run forward into the future ($t>13.8$ Gyr). We show that the impact of $\Lambda$ becomes significant only when the Universe has already produced most of its stellar mass, only decreasing the total co-moving density of stars ever formed by ${\approx}15\%$. We develop a simple analytic model for the cosmic star formation rate that captures the suppression due to a cosmological constant. The main reason for the similarity between the models is that feedback from accreting black holes dramatically reduces the cosmic star formation at late times. Interestingly, simulations without feedback from accreting black holes predict an upturn in the cosmic star formation rate for $t>15$ Gyr due to the rejuvenation of massive ($ > 10^{11} \mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) galaxies. It is now possible for hydrodynamical simulations to reproduce a representative galaxy population. Accordingly, it is timely to assess critically some of the assumptions of traditional semi-analytic galaxy formation models. We use the Eagle simulations to assess assumptions built into the Galform semi-analytic model, focussing on those relating to baryon cycling, angular momentum and feedback. We show that the assumption in Galform that newly formed stars have the same specific angular momentum as the total disc leads to a significant overestimate of the total stellar specific angular momentum of disc galaxies. In Eagle, stars form preferentially out of low specific angular momentum gas in the interstellar medium (ISM) due to the assumed gas density threshold for stars to form, leading to more realistic galaxy sizes. We find that stellar mass assembly is similar between Galform and Eagle but that the evolution of gas properties is different, with various indications that the rate of baryon cycling in Eagle is slower than is assumed in Galform. Finally, by matching individual galaxies between Eagle and Galform, we find that an artificial dependence of AGN feedback and gas infall rates on halo mass doubling events in Galform drives most of the scatter in stellar mass between individual objects. We use a suite of hydrodynamical cosmological simulations from the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) project to investigate the formation of hot hydrostatic haloes and their dependence on feedback mechanisms. We find that the appearance of a strong bimodality in the probability density function (PDF) of the ratio of the radiative cooling and dynamical times for halo gas provides a clear signature of the formation of a hot corona. Haloes of total mass $10^{11.5}-10^{12}{\rm{M}}_{\odot}$ develop a hot corona independent of redshift, at least in the interval $z=0-4$ where the simulation has sufficiently good statistics. We analyse the build up of the hot gas mass in the halo, $M_{\rm{hot}}$, as a function of halo mass and redshift and find that while more energetic galactic winds powered by SNe increases $M_{\rm{hot}}$, AGN feedback reduces it by ejecting gas from the halo. We also study the thermal properties of gas accreting onto haloes and measure the fraction of shock-heated gas as a function of redshift and halo mass. We develop analytic and semianalytic approaches to estimate a `critical halo mass', $M_{\rm{crit}}$, for hot halo formation. We find that the mass for which the heating rate produced by accretion shocks equals the radiative cooling rate, reproduces the mass above which haloes develop a significant hot atmosphere. This yields a mass estimate of $M_{\rm{crit}} \approx 10^{11.7}{\rm{M}}_{\odot}$ at $z=0$, which agrees with the simulation results. Observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory are used to examine the hot gas properties within a sample of 10 galaxy groups selected from the Galaxy And Mass Assembly survey's optical Friends-of-Friends group catalogue. Our groups have been screened to eliminate spurious and unrelaxed systems, and the effectiveness of this procedure is demonstrated by the detection of intergalactic hot gas in 80 per cent of our sample. However, we find that 9 of the 10 are X-ray underluminous by a mean factor of $\sim$4 compared to typical X-ray-selected samples. Consistent with this, the majority of our groups have gas fractions that are lower and gas entropies somewhat higher than those seen in typical X-ray-selected samples. Two groups, which have high 2{\sigma} lower limits on their gas entropy, are candidates for the population of high-entropy groups predicted by some active galactic nucleus feedback models., Comment: 18 pages, 7 Figures with 10 subfigures, 5 Tables, Accepted by MNRAS

We present mock optical images, broad-band and H$\alpha$ fluxes, and D4000 spectral indices for 30,145 galaxies from the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation at redshift $z=0.1$, modelling dust with the SKIRT Monte Carlo radiative transfer code. The modelling includes a subgrid prescription for dusty star-forming regions, with both the subgrid obscuration of these regions and the fraction of metals in diffuse interstellar dust calibrated against far-infrared fluxes of local galaxies. The predicted optical colours as a function of stellar mass agree well with observation, with the SKIRT model showing marked improvement over a simple dust screen model. The orientation dependence of attenuation is weaker than observed because EAGLE galaxies are generally puffier than real galaxies, due to the pressure floor imposed on the interstellar medium. The mock H$\alpha$ luminosity function agrees reasonably well with the data, and we quantify the extent to which dust obscuration affects observed H$\alpha$ fluxes. The distribution of D4000 break values is bimodal, as observed. In the simulation, 20$\%$ of galaxies deemed `passive' for the SKIRT model, i.e. exhibiting D4000 $> 1.8$, are classified `active' when ISM dust attenuation is not included. The fraction of galaxies with stellar mass greater than $10^{10}$ M$_\odot$ that are deemed passive is slightly smaller than observed, which is due to low levels of residual star formation in these simulated galaxies. We describe a new Large Program in progress on the Gemini North and South telescopes: Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early Environments (GOGREEN). This is an imaging and deep spectroscopic survey of 21 galaxy systems at $110$ in halo mass. The scientific objectives include measuring the role of environment in the evolution of low-mass galaxies, and measuring the dynamics and stellar contents of their host haloes. The targets are selected from the SpARCS, SPT, COSMOS and SXDS surveys, to be the evolutionary counterparts of today's clusters and groups. The new red-sensitive Hamamatsu detectors on GMOS, coupled with the nod-and-shuffle sky subtraction, allow simultaneous wavelength coverage over $\lambda\sim 0.6$--$1.05\mu$m, and this enables a homogeneous and statistically complete redshift survey of galaxies of all types. The spectroscopic sample targets galaxies with AB magnitudes $z^{\prime}<24.25$ and [3.6]$\mu$m$<22.5$, and is therefore statistically complete for stellar masses $M_\ast\gtrsim10^{10.3}M_\odot$, for all galaxy types and over the entire redshift range. Deep, multiwavelength imaging has been acquired over larger fields for most systems, spanning $u$ through $K$, in addition to deep IRAC imaging at 3.6$\mu$m. The spectroscopy is $\sim 50$ per cent complete as of semester 17A, and we anticipate a final sample of $\sim 500$ new cluster members. Combined with existing spectroscopy on the brighter galaxies from GCLASS, SPT and other sources, GOGREEN will be a large legacy cluster and field galaxy sample at this redshift that spectroscopically covers a wide range in stellar mass, halo mass, and clustercentric radius., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS May 26, 2017

We investigate the relation between kinematic morphology, intrinsic colour and stellar mass of galaxies in the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We calculate the intrinsic u-r colours and measure the fraction of kinetic energy invested in ordered corotation of 3562 galaxies at z=0 with stellar masses larger than $10^{10}M_{\odot}$. We perform a visual inspection of gri-composite images and find that our kinematic morphology correlates strongly with visual morphology. EAGLE produces a galaxy population for which morphology is tightly correlated with the location in the colour- mass diagram, with the red sequence mostly populated by elliptical galaxies and the blue cloud by disc galaxies. Satellite galaxies are more likely to be on the red sequence than centrals, and for satellites the red sequence is morphologically more diverse. These results show that the connection between mass, intrinsic colour and morphology arises from galaxy formation models that reproduce the observed galaxy mass function and sizes., Comment: Letter submitted to MNRAS, 5 pages, 4 figures

We introduce the Cluster-EAGLE (C-EAGLE) simulation project, a set of cosmological hydrodynamical zoom simulations of the formation of $30$ galaxy clusters in the mass range $10^{14}

We quantify the correlations between gas-phase and stellar metallicities and global properties of galaxies, such as stellar mass, halo mass, age and gas fraction, in the Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments (EAGLE) suite of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations. The slope of the correlation between stellar mass and metallicity of star-forming (SF) gas ($M_*-Z_{\rm SF,gas}$ relation) depends somewhat on resolution, with the higher-resolution run reproducing a steeper slope. This simulation predicts a non-zero metallicity evolution, increasing by $\approx 0.5$ dex at $\sim 10^9 {\rm M}_{\odot}$ since $z = 3$. The simulated relation between stellar mass, metallicity and star formation rate at $z \lesssim 5$ agrees remarkably well with the observed fundamental metallicity relation. At $M_* \lesssim 10^{10.3} {\rm M}_{\odot}$ and fixed stellar mass, higher metallicities are associated with lower specific star formation rates, lower gas fractions and older stellar populations. On the other hand, at higher $M_*$, there is a hint of an inversion of the dependence of metallicity on these parameters. The fundamental parameter that best correlates with the metal content, in the simulations, is the gas fraction. The simulated gas fraction-metallicity relation exhibits small scatter and does not evolve significantly since $z = 3$. In order to better understand the origin of these correlations, we analyse a set of lower resolution simulations in which feedback parameters are varied. We find that the slope of the simulated $M_*-Z_{\rm SF,gas}$ relation is mostly determined by stellar feedback at low stellar masses ($M_* \lesssim 10^{10} {\rm M}_{\odot}$), and at high masses ($M_* \gtrsim 10^{10} {\rm M}_{\odot}$) by the feedback from active galactic nuclei., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures. We introduce the Hydrangea simulations, a suite of 24 cosmological hydrodynamic zoom-in simulations of massive galaxy clusters (M_200c = 10^14-10^15 M_Sun) with baryon particle masses of ~10^6 M_Sun. Designed to study the impact of the cluster environment on galaxy formation, they are a key part of the `Cluster-EAGLE' project (Barnes et al. 2017). They use a galaxy formation model developed for the EAGLE project, which has been shown to yield both realistic field galaxies and hot gas fractions of galaxy groups consistent with observations. The total stellar mass content of the simulated clusters agrees with observations, but central cluster galaxies are too massive, by up to 0.6 dex. Passive satellite fractions are higher than in the field, and at stellar masses Mstar > 10^10 M_Sun this environmental effect is quantitatively consistent with observations. The predicted satellite stellar mass function matches data from local cluster surveys. Normalized to total mass, there are fewer low-mass (Mstar < 10^10 M_Sun) galaxies within the virial radius of clusters than in the field, primarily due to star formation quenching. Conversely, the simulations predict an overabundance of massive galaxies in clusters compared to the field that persists to their far outskirts (> 5r_200c). This is caused by a significantly increased stellar mass fraction of (sub-)haloes in the cluster environment, by up to ~0.3 dex even well beyond r_200c. We present a clustering comparison of 12 galaxy formation models (including Semi-Analytic Models (SAMs) and Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) models) all run on halo catalogues and merger trees extracted from a single {\Lambda}CDM N-body simulation. We compare the results of the measurements of the mean halo occupation numbers, the radial distribution of galaxies in haloes and the 2-Point Correlation Functions (2PCF). We also study the implications of the different treatments of orphan (galaxies not assigned to any dark matter subhalo) and non-orphan galaxies in these measurements. Our main result is that the galaxy formation models generally agree in their clustering predictions but they disagree significantly between HOD and SAMs for the orphan satellites. Although there is a very good agreement between the models on the 2PCF of central galaxies, the scatter between the models when orphan satellites are included can be larger than a factor of 2 for scales smaller than 1 Mpc/h. We also show that galaxy formation models that do not include orphan satellite galaxies have a significantly lower 2PCF on small scales, consistent with previous studies. Finally, we show that the 2PCF of orphan satellites is remarkably different between SAMs and HOD models. Orphan satellites in SAMs present a higher clustering than in HOD models because they tend to occupy more massive haloes. We conclude that orphan satellites have an important role on galaxy clustering and they are the main cause of the differences in the clustering between HOD models and SAMs., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

We present a MUSE and KMOS dynamical study 405 star-forming galaxies at redshift z=0.28-1.65 (median redshift z=0.84). Our sample are representative of star-forming, main-sequence galaxies, with star-formation rates of SFR=0.1-30Mo/yr and stellar masses M=10^8-10^11Mo. For 49+/-4% of our sample, the dynamics suggest rotational support, 24+/-3% are unresolved systems and 5+/-2% appear to be early-stage major mergers with components on 8-30kpc scales. The remaining 22+/-5% appear to be dynamically complex, irregular (or face-on systems). For galaxies whose dynamics suggest rotational support, we derive inclination corrected rotational velocities and show these systems lie on a similar scaling between stellar mass and specific angular momentum as local spirals with j*=J/M*\propto M^(2/3) but with a redshift evolution that scales as j*\propto M^{2/3}(1+z)^(-1). We identify a correlation between specific angular momentum and disk stability such that galaxies with the highest specific angular momentum, log(j*/M^(2/3))>2.5, are the most stable, with Toomre Q=1.10+/-0.18, compared to Q=0.53+/-0.22 for galaxies with log(j*/M^(2/3))<2.5. At a fixed mass, the HST morphologies of galaxies with the highest specific angular momentum resemble spiral galaxies, whilst those with low specific angular momentum are morphologically complex and dominated by several bright star-forming regions. This suggests that angular momentum plays a major role in defining the stability of gas disks: at z~1, massive galaxies that have disks with low specific angular momentum, appear to be globally unstable, clumpy and turbulent systems. We use EAGLE to quantify the effect galaxy mergers have on the stellar specific angular momentum of galaxies, $j_{\rm stars}$. We split mergers into: dry (gas-poor)/wet (gas-rich), major/minor, and different spin alignments and orbital parameters. Wet (dry) mergers have an average neutral gas-to-stellar mass ratio of $1.1$ ($0.02$), while major (minor) mergers are those with stellar mass ratios $\ge 0.3$ ($0.1-0.3$). We correlate the positions of galaxies in the $j_{\rm stars}$-stellar mass plane at $z=0$ with their merger history, and find that galaxies of low spins suffered dry mergers, while galaxies of normal/high spins suffered predominantly wet mergers, if any. The radial $j_{\rm stars}$ profiles of galaxies that went through dry mergers are deficient by $\approx 0.3$~dex at $r\lesssim 10\,r_{50}$ (with $r_{50}$ being the half-stellar mass radius), compared to galaxies that went through wet mergers. Studying the merger remnants reveals that dry mergers reduce $j_{\rm stars}$ by $\approx 30$\%, while wet mergers increase it by $\approx 10$\%, on average. The latter is connected to the build-up of the bulge by newly formed stars of high rotational speed. Moving from minor to major mergers accentuates these effects. When the spin vectors of the galaxies prior to the dry merger are misaligned, $j_{\rm stars}$ decreases to a greater magnitude, while in wet mergers co-rotation and high orbital angular momentum efficiently spun-up galaxies. We predict what would be the observational signatures in the $j_{\rm stars}$ profiles driven by dry mergers: (i) shallow radial profiles and (ii) profiles that rise beyond $\approx 10\,r_{50}$, both of which are significantly different from spiral galaxies., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We investigate the connection between the star formation rate (SFR) of galaxies and their central black hole accretion rate (BHAR) using the EAGLE cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We find, in striking concurrence with recent observational studies, that the --BHAR relation for an AGN selected sample produces a relatively flat trend, whilst the --SFR relation for a SFR selected sample yields an approximately linear trend. These trends remain consistent with their instantaneous equivalents even when both SFR and BHAR are time-averaged over a period of 100~Myr. There is no universal relationship between the two growth rates. Instead, SFR and BHAR evolve through distinct paths that depend strongly on the mass of the host dark matter halo. The galaxies hosted by haloes of mass M200 $\lesssim 10^{11.5}$Msol grow steadily, yet black holes (BHs) in these systems hardly grow, yielding a lack of correlation between SFR and BHAR. As haloes grow through the mass range $10^{11.5} \lesssim$ M200 $\lesssim 10^{12.5 }$Msol BHs undergo a rapid phase of non-linear growth. These systems yield a highly non-linear correlation between the SFR and BHAR, which are non-causally connected via the mass of the host halo. In massive haloes (M200 $\gtrsim 10^{12.5}$Msol) both SFR and BHAR decline on average with a roughly constant scaling of SFR/BHAR $\sim 10^{3}$. Given the complexity of the full SFR--BHAR plane built from multiple behaviours, and from the large dynamic range of BHARs, we find the primary driver of the different observed trends in the --BHAR and --SFR relationships are due to sampling considerably different regions of this plane., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures and 1 table. We present measurements of star formation rates (SFRs) for dwarf galaxies (M*~10^8.5 Msun ) at z~1 using near-infrared slitless spectroscopy from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) by targetting and measuring the luminosity of the H{\alpha} emission line. Our sample is derived from the Redshift One LDSS3 Emission Line Survey (ROLES), which used [O II]{\lambda} 3727 as a tracer of star formation to target very low stellar masses down to very low SFRs (~0.1 Msun yr^-1) at this epoch. Dust corrections are estimated using SED-fits and we find, by comparison with other studies using Balmer decrement dust corrections, that we require a smaller ratio between the gas phase and stellar extinction than the nominal Calzetti relation, in agreement with recent findings by other studies. By stacking the WFC3 spectra at the redshifts obtained from ground-based [O II] detections, we are able to push the WFC3 spectra to much lower SFRs and obtain the most complete spectroscopic measurement of the low mass end of the SSFR--mass relation to date. We measure a flatter low mass power law slope (-0.47 +/- 0.04) than found by other (shallower) H{\alpha}-selected samples (\approx -1), although still somewhat steeper than that predicted by the EAGLE simulation (-0.14 +/- 0.05), hinting at possible missing physics not modelled by EAGLE or remaining incompleteness for our H{\alpha} data., Comment: MNRAS accepted, 17 pages, 13 figures
