Deep-water sands form a new frontier for marine geology and petroleum exploration, but how does sand reach the deep sea? Existing geological models predict that deep-water sands are mainly supplied from rivers during times of low sea level, or by incision of canyons into the shelf to tap river or longshore-transport sand sources. Here, we demonstrate that at high sea level, southeast Australian deep-water sands are delivered by a wave-driven coastal transport system, interacting with estuarine ebb tidal flows, that transports sand over the shelf edge at a change in margin orientation. Discovery of this new process results from an investigation that combines multibeam acoustic, microfaunal, zircon and luminescence dating, oceanographic, Landsat, remotely operated vehicle, and sediment property methods. Our longshore transport-driven model is capable of forecasting new locations for deep-water sand deposits in a predictive paleoclimatic and paleotectonic setting. The effects of environmental policy instruments in promoting the development and acceptance of modern pollution reduction technology in a heterogenous industry is examined. Five policy instruments including auction permits, emissions taxes and subsidies, issued marketable permits, and performance standards are evaluated. It is concluded that incentive-based instruments are the most effective promoting development and acceptance of pollution reduction technologies.

One method of testing the concept of sequence stratigraphy is to compare it to Quaternary sediments in which chronology, stratigraphic relations, and facies geometry are more clearly understood than in older rocks. Rapid deposition rates during Quaternary glacial-eustatic cycles in large deltaic depocenters generate sequences comparable to those in the ancient stratigraphic record. In the northern Gulf of Mexico, the late Wisconsinan-Holocene Mississippi River has deposited a Type 1 sequence that includes lowstand, transgressive, and high-stand system tracts. Characteristics of modern Mississippi River sedimentary environments support the methodology used in sequence analysis, but the short time taken for sequence generation here raises important questions about sequence time scales, correlation, and driving mechanisms.
