We present an interferometric sensor for investigating macroscopic quantum mechanics on a table-top scale. The sensor consists of pair of suspended optical cavities with a finesse in excess of 100,000 comprising 10 g fused-silica mirrors. In the current room-temperature operation, we achieve a peak sensitivity of \SI{0.5}{\fmasd} in the acoustic frequency band, limited by the readout noise. With additional suppression of the readout noise, we will be able to reach the quantum radiation pressure noise, which would represent a novel measurement of the quantum back-action effect. Such a sensor can eventually be utilised for demonstrating macroscopic entanglement and testing semi-classical and quantum gravity models.

Axions and axion-like particles (ALPs) are leading candidates for dark matter. They are well motivated in many extensions of the Standard Model and supported by astronomical observations. We propose an iterative transformation of the existing facilities of the gravitational-wave detector and technology testbed GEO600, located near Ruthe in Germany, into a kilometre-scale upgrade of the laser-interferometric axion detector LIDA. The final DarkGEO detector could search for coincident signatures of axions and ALPs and significantly surpass the current constraints of both direct searches and astrophysical observations in the measurement band from $10^{-16}$ to $10^{-8}$ $\text{eV}$. We discuss realistic parameters and design sensitivities for the configurations of the different iteration steps as well as technical challenges known from the first LIDA results. The proposed DarkGEO detector will be well suited to probe the parameter space associated with predictions from theoretical models, like grand-unified theories, as well as from astrophysical evidence, like the cosmic infrared background.

We present the operating principle and the first observing run of a novel kind of direct detector for axions and axion-like particles in the galactic halo. Sensitive to the polarisation rotation of linearly polarised laser light induced by an axion field, our experiment is the first detector of its kind collecting scientific data. We discuss our current peak sensitivity of $1.51\times 10^{-10}$ $\text{GeV}^{-1}$ (95 % confidence level) to the axion-photon coupling strength in the axion mass range of $1.97$-$2.01$ $\text{neV}$ which is, for instance, motivated by supersymmetric grand-unified theories. We also report on effects that arise in our high-finesse in-vacuum cavity at an unprecedented optical continuous-wave intensity of $4.7$ $\text{MW/cm}^2$. Our detector already belongs to the most sensitive direct searches within its measurement band, and our results pave the way towards surpassing the current sensitivity limits in the mass range from $10^{-8}$ $\text{eV}$ down to $10^{-16}$ $\text{eV}$ via quantum-enhanced laser interferometry.

Broadband quantum noise reduction can be achieved in gravitational wave detectors by injecting frequency dependent squeezed light into the the dark port of the interferometer. This frequency dependent squeezing can be generated by combining squeezed light with external filter cavities. However, in future long baseline interferometers (LBIs), the filter cavity required to achieve the broadband squeezing has a low bandwidth -- necessitating a very long cavity to mitigate the issue from optical loss. It has been shown recently that by taking advantage of Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement in the squeezed light source, the interferometer can simultaneously act as a detector and a filter cavity. This is an attractive broadband squeezing scheme for LBIs because the length requirement for the filter cavity is naturally satisfied by the length of the interferometer arms. In this paper we present a systematic way of finding the working points for this broadband squeezing scheme in LBIs. We also show that in LBIs, the EPR scheme achieves nearly perfect ellipse rotation as compared to 4km interferometers which have appreciable error around the intermediate frequency. Finally, we show that an approximation for the opto-mechanical coupling constant in the 4km case can break down for longer baselines. These results are applicable to future detectors such as the 10km Einstein Telescope and the 40km Cosmic Explorer.

Recent advances in the understanding and control of quantum technologies, such as those based on cold atoms, have resulted in devices with extraordinary metrological sensitivities. To realise this potential outside of a lab environment the size, weight and power consumption need to be reduced. Here we demonstrate the use of laser powder bed fusion, an additive manufacturing technique, as a production technique for the components that make up quantum sensors. As a demonstration we have constructed two key components using additive manufacturing, namely magnetic shielding and vacuum chambers. The initial prototypes for magnetic shields show shielding factors within a factor of 3 of conventional approaches. The vacuum demonstrator device shows that 3D-printed titanium structures are suitable for use as vacuum chambers, with the test system reaching base pressures of $5 \pm 0.5 \times 10^{-10}$ mbar. These demonstrations show considerable promise for the use of additive manufacturing for cold atom based quantum technologies, in future enabling improved integrated structures, allowing for the reduction in size, weight and assembly complexity., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We experimentally study a homodyne detection technique for the characterization of a quadrature squeezed field where the correlated bands, here created by four-wave mixing in a hot atomic vapor, are separated by a large frequency gap of more than 6 GHz. The technique uses a two-frequency local oscillator to detect the fluctuations of the correlated bands at a frequency accessible to the detection electronics. Working at low detection frequency, the method allows for the determination of both the amplitude and the phase of the squeezing spectrum. In particular, we show that the quadrature squeezing created by our four-wave mixing process displays a noise ellipse rotation of $\pi/2$ across the squeezing spectrum, Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

The emerging field of on-chip integration of nanophotonic devices and cold atoms offers extremely-strong and pure light-matter interaction schemes, which may have profound impact on quantum information science. In this context, a long-standing obstacle is to achieve strong interaction between single atoms and single photons, while at the same time trap atoms in vacuum at large separation distances from dielectric surfaces. In this work, we study new waveguide geometries that challenge these conflicting objectives. The designed photonic crystal waveguide is expected to offer a good compromise, which additionally allows for easy manipulation of atomic clouds around the structure, while being tolerant to fabrication imperfections., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Atom interferometers are promising tools for precision measurement with applications ranging from geophysical exploration to tests of the equivalence principle of general relativity, or the detection of gravitational waves. Their optimal sensitivity is ultimately limited by their detection noise. We review resonant and near-resonant methods to detect the atom number of the interferometer outputs and we theoretically analyze the relative influence of various scheme dependent noise sources and the technical challenges affecting the detection. We show that for the typical conditions under which an atom interferometer operates, simultaneous fluorescence detection with a CCD sensor is the optimal imaging scheme. Entangled multi-spatial-mode fields have interesting applications in quantum information, such as parallel quantum information protocols, quantum computing, and quantum imaging. We study the use of a nondegenerate four-wave mixing process in rubidium vapor at 795 nm to demonstrate generation of quantum-entangled images. Owing to the lack of an optical resonator cavity, the four-wave mixing scheme generates inherently multi-spatial-mode output fields. We have verified the presence of entanglement between the multi-mode beams by analyzing the amplitude difference and the phase sum noise using a dual homodyne detection scheme, measuring more than 4 dB of squeezing in both cases.
