1. Analysis of the day-to-day variability of ozone vertical profiles in the lower troposphere during the 2022 Paris ACROSS campaign.

Abstract

The variability of ozone vertical profiles in the Paris area is analyzed using 21 d of lidar monitoring of the lower-troposphere ozone vertical profiles and planetary boundary layer (PBL) vertical structure evolution in summer 2022. Characterization of the pollution regional transport is based on daily ozone analysis of the Copernicus Atmospheric Service (CAMS) ensemble model and on backward trajectories. The CAMS simulations of the ozone plume between the surface and 3 km are consistent with the ozone measurements. Comparisons with the tropospheric ozone column retrieved by satellite observations of the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) show that IASI observations can capture the day-to-day variability of the 0–3 km ozone column only when the maximum altitude of the ozone plume is higher than 2 km. The lidar ozone vertical structure above the city center is also in good agreement with the PBL growth during the day and with the formation of the residual layer during the night. The analysis of four ozone pollution events shows that the thickness of the PBL during the day and the advection of regional-scale plumes above the PBL can significantly change the ozone concentrations above Paris. Advection of ozone-poor concentrations in the free troposphere during a Saharan dust event is able to mitigate ozone photochemical production. On the other hand, the advection of a pollution plume from continental Europe with high ozone concentrations > 140 µ g m−3 maintained high concentrations in the surface layer despite a temperature decrease and cloud cover development. Abstract

Using state-of-the-art satellite ozone profile products, and a chemical transport model, we provide an updated estimate of the tropospheric ozone radiative effect (TO3RE) and observational constraint on its variability over the decade 2008-2017. Previous studies have shown the short-term (i.e. a few years) globally weighted average TO3RE to be 1.17 ± 0.03 W m-2. However, from our analysis, using decadal (2008-2017) ozone profile datasets from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer, average TO3RE ranges between 1.21 and 1.26 W m-2. Over this decade, the modelled and observational TO3RE linear trends show a negligible change (e.g. ± 0.1 % yr-1). Abstract

Ozone is a potent air pollutant in the lower troposphere and an important short-lived climate forcer (SLCF) in the upper troposphere. Studies investigating long-term trends in the tropospheric column ozone (TCO 3) have shown large-scale spatio-temporal inconsistencies. Here, we investigate the long-term trends in lower-tropospheric column ozone (LTCO 3 , surface–450 hPa sub-column) by exploiting a synergy of satellite and ozonesonde data sets and an Earth system model (UK's Earth System Model, UKESM) over North America, Europe, and East Asia for the decade 2008–2017. Overall, we typically find small LTCO 3 linear trends with large uncertainty ranges using the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), while model simulations indicate a stable LTCO 3 tendency. The satellite a priori data sets show negligible trends, indicating that any year-to-year changes in the spatio-temporal sampling of these satellite data sets over the period concerned have not artificially influenced their LTCO 3 temporal evolution. The application of the satellite averaging kernels (AKs) to the UKESM simulated ozone profiles, accounting for the satellite vertical sensitivity and allowing for like-for-like comparisons, has a limited impact on the modelled LTCO 3 tendency in most cases. While, in relative terms, this is more substantial (e.g. on the order of 100 %), the absolute magnitudes of the model trends show negligible change. However, as the model has a near-zero tendency, artificial trends were imposed on the model time series (i.e. LTCO 3 values rearranged from smallest to largest) to test the influence of the AKs, but simulated LTCO 3 trends remained small. Therefore, the LTCO 3 tendencies between 2008 and 2017 in northern-hemispheric regions are likely to be small, with large uncertainties, and it is difficult to detect any small underlying linear trends due to interannual variability or other factors which require further investigation (e.g. the radiative transfer scheme (RTS) used and/or the inputs (e.g. meteorological fields) used in the RTS). Abstract

Continuous measurements of a wide range of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) have been performed since 2001 in Paris megacity and three French medium-sized cities (Grenoble, Marseille, and Strasbourg). After a careful verification of the data measured, the ambient concentrations are used to analyze the spatial and seasonal variability of the anthropogenic NMHC and determine the present NMHC emission ratios relative to acetylene, a useful metric to evaluate and constraint emission inventories. We show that NMHC urban composition is consistent between all cities with no industrial influence and characteristic of the urban emission mixtures, which are mostly dominated by vehicle exhaust emissions. In winter, the urban NMHC composition generally shows an enhancement in combustion-derived products (alkenes, acetylene), C2-C3 alkanes and benzene, which presumes seasonal changes in emission ratio values. Present emission ratios of NMHC relative to acetylene are determined in Paris and Strasbourg both in summer and winter. They generally compare within a factor of two except for C7-C9 aromatics in Paris. On a seasonal basis, summertime emission ratios are three times higher than wintertime ones while they stay constant for combustion derived product (alkenes) and benzene. The unburned gasoline fraction (alkanes and C7-C9 aromatics) shows the maximum difference up to a factor of seven. These findings suggest that the emission ratios reflect seasonal changes in emissions and can be a useful metric to constraint temporally resolved emission inventories at different time of the year. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

The ozone vertical profiles variability in the lower troposphere is analyzed during the summer 2022 ACROSS (Atmospheric ChemistRy Of the Suburban foreSt) measurement campaign as part of the PANAME (PAris region urbaN Atmospheric observations and models for Multidisciplinary rEsearch) project. The analysis is based on 21 days of DIfferential Absorption Lidar (DIAL) observations, in addition to the two daily vertical ozone profiles measured by In-service Aircraft for a Global Observing System (IAGOS) flights to and from Paris airport. The ACROSS ozone profiles are also a good opportunity to assess the lowermost tropospheric ozone column retrieval by the satellite observations of Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI). The planetary boundary layer (PBL) vertical structure evolution is monitored using a 808-nm microlidar and meteorological radiosondes launched in the city center. Characterization of the regional transport of polluted air masses advected over the city is based on the daily ozone analysis of the Copernicus Atmospheric Service (CAMS) ensemble model and on backward trajectories of the Paris city plume. This work show that the CAMS simulations of the Paris ozone plume between the surface and 3 km are consistent with the ACROSS ozone vertical profiles and that the IASI satellite observations can capture the day to day variability of the 0-3 km lowermost ozone column if the contribution of the surface column below 1.2 km is lower than 4 DU. The day time ozone vertical structure above the city center is also in good agreement with the PBL growth during the day and with the formation of the residual layer during the night. The O3 DIAL may provide additional information about the PBL vertical structure to discuss differences between microlidar and radiosounding measurements of the PBL height. In addition to the well-known control of the ozone photochemical production by atmospheric temperature, cloud cover and mixing between the surface layer (0 - 500 m) and the residual layer, the comparison of four ozone pollution events shows that the thickness of the PBL during the day and the advection of regional scale plumes above the PBL can significantly change the ozone concentrations above Paris city center. With similar cloud cover and air temperature, high ozone concentrations up to 180 µg.m-3 are encountered during the day when PBL height is below 1.5 km, while they remain below 150 µg.m-3 when PBL height increases above 2.5 km. Advection of ozone poor concentrations in the free troposphere during a Saharan dust event is able to mitigate the ozone photochemical production. On the other hand, the advection of a continental pollution plume with high ozone concentrations > 140 µg.m-3 maintained high concentrations in the surface layer despite a temperature decrease and cloud cover development. Abstract

The three Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI) instruments on board the Metop family of satellites have been sounding the atmospheric composition since 2006. More than 30 atmospheric gases can be measured from the IASI radiance spectra, allowing the improvement of weather forecasting and the monitoring of atmospheric chemistry and climate variables. The early detection of extreme events such as fires, pollution episodes,volcanic eruptions, or industrial releases is key to take safety measures to protect the inhabitants and the environment in the impacted areas. With its near-real-time observations and good horizontal coverage, IASI can contribute to the series of monitoring systems for the systematic and continuous detection of exceptional atmospheric events in order to support operational decisions. In this paper, we describe a new approach to the near-real-time detectionand characterization of unexpected events, which relies on the principalcomponent analysis (PCA) of IASI radiance spectra. By analyzing both theIASI raw and compressed spectra, we applied a PCA-granule-based method onvarious past, well-documented extreme events such as volcanic eruptions,fires, anthropogenic pollution, and industrial accidents. We demonstratethat the method is well suited to the detection of spectral signatures for reactive and weakly absorbing gases, even for sporadic events. Consistent long-term records are also generated for fire and volcanic events from the available IASI/Metop-B data record. The method is running continuously, delivering email alerts on a routinebasis, using the near-real-time IASI L1C radiance data. Abstract

Using state-of-the-art satellite ozone profile products, and chemical transport model, we provide an updated estimate of the tropospheric ozone radiative effect (TO3RE) and observational constraint on its variability over the decade 2008–2017. Previous studies have shown the short-term (i.e. a few years) globally weighted average TO3RE to be 1.17±0.03 W/m², while our analysis suggests that the long-term (2008–2017) average TO3RE to be 1.21–1.28 W/m². Over this decade, the modelled/observational TO3RE linear trends show negligible change (i.e. ±0.1 %/year), so the tropospheric ozone radiative contribution to climate has remained stable with time. Two model sensitivity experiments fixing emissions and meteorology to one year (i.e. start year – 2008) show that ozone precursor emissions (meteorological factors) have had limited (substantial) impacts on the long-term tendency of globally weighted average TO3RE. Here, the meteorological variability in the tropical/sub-tropical upper troposphere is dampening any tendency in TO3RE from other factors (e.g. emissions, atmospheric chemistry). Abstract

International audience; The 3 IASI instruments on-board the Metop satellites have been sounding the atmospheric composition since 2006. Up to ~30 atmospheric gases can be measured from IASI spectra, allowing the improvement of weather forecasting, and the analysis and monitoring of atmospheric chemistry and climate variables.The early detection of extreme events such as fires, pollution episodes, volcanic eruptions, industrial accidents, is key to take appropriate decisions regarding safety to protect inhabitants and the environment in the target areas. With IASI providing global observations twice a day in near real time, a new way for the systematic and continuous detection of exceptional atmospheric events to support operational decisions is possible.In this work, we explore and improve a method for the detection and characterization of extreme events using the recorded spectra, which relies on the principal component analysis (PCA) method. We assess this PCA-based system by analysing IASI raw and reconstructed spectra along with their differences (residuals) for various past and documented extreme events. The benefits and limitations of this approach are discussed with comparison with available CO and SO2 IASI products. A methodological innovation, based on the refined analysis of extreme residuals (outliers) for the detection of fires, volcanic eruptions and pollution event is proposed, and could be used for the automatic and systematic detection of unexpected events.

Abstract

The three IASI instruments on-board the Metop family of satellites have been sounding the atmospheric composition since 2006. More than 30 atmospheric gases can be measured from the IASI radiance spectra, allowing the improvement of weather forecasting, and the monitoring of atmospheric chemistry and climate variables. The early detection of extreme events such as fires, pollution episodes, volcanic eruptions, or industrial releases is key to take safety measures to protect inhabitants and the environment in the impacted areas. With its near real time observations and good horizontal coverage, IASI can contribute to the series of monitoring systems for the systematic and continuous detection of exceptional atmospheric events, in order to support operational decisions. In this paper, we describe a new approach for the near real time detection and characterization of unexpected events, which relies on the principal component analysis (PCA) of IASI radiance spectra. By analysing both the IASI raw and compressed spectra, we applied a PCA-granule based method on various past well documented extreme events such as volcanic eruptions, fires, anthropogenic pollutions and industrial accidents. We demonstrate that the method is well suited to detect spectral signatures for reactive and weak absorbing gases, even for sporadic events. The IASI mission has been developed with the objective to provide high-quality radiance spectra and global measurements of atmospheric parameters, for accurate Numerical Weather Predictions (NWP) and improved climate and atmospheric composition (AC) monitoring. This led to the design of an advanced hyperspectral infrared instrument, featuring, at Level1C a large spectral range of the infrared without gaps (645-2760 cm-1), a fairly high spectral resolution (0.5 cm-1) and a low noise. These Level1C radiances have been exploited extensively in the last decade for applications in air quality, climate, tropospheric and stratospheric chemistry. There is in fact an impressive series of atmospheric trace gases that are retrieved from IASI Level1C, including several that display very small spectral signatures or others that appear only around localized pollution sources or in volcanic and fire plumes. Because of the potential loss of information coming with principal component analysis (PCA) –especially for rare signals- the scientific community has, until now, favored the use of the native Level1C over PCA-reconstructed radiances, despite the reduction of noise that the latter allow. Abstract

International audience; The amplitude of ozone depletion in the Arctic is monitored every year since 1994 by comparison between totalozone measurements of SAOZ / NDACC UV-Vis spectrometers deployed in the Arctic and 3-D chemical transportmodel simulations in which ozone is considered as a passive tracer.When SAOZ measurements are missing for various reasons, lack of sunlight, station closed or instrumentfailure, they are replaced by IASI Metop-A or IASI Metop-B overpasses above the station. These measurements inthe thermal Infrared are available all year around, at all latitudes even in the polar night. IASI data have been com-pared to SAOZ and to 3-D CTM REPROBUS and the agreement is better than 3% at the latitude of the polar circle.The method allows determining the evolution of the daily rate of the ozone destruction and the amplitudeof the cumulative loss at the end of the winter. The amplitude of the destruction varies between 0-10% in relativelywarm and short vortex duration years to 25-39% in colder and longer ones.However, as shown by the unprecedented depletion of 39% in 2010/11, the loss is not only dependent onthe extension of the vortex in spring, but also on its strength limiting its re-noxification by import of nitrogenoxide species from the outside, as reported by the rapid increase of total NO2columns measured by the SAOZinstruments.Shown in this presentation will be the evolution of ozone loss and re-noxification in the Arctic during thewinter 2018/19 compared to that of previous winters.Compared to observed SAOZ/IASI O3loss, REPROBUS and SLIMCAT CTM simulations are showingsimilar losses, however the agreement may vary from one year to the other, depending on the assumptions ofvortex strength and isolation. The comparison between ozone loss amplitudes and ozone loss rates, seen each yearsince 1994 by SAOZ and the two CTM simulations will be followed by a discussion of possible causes in theirvariable amplitude

Abstract

We analyze the 2019 sudden stratospheric warming event that occurred in the Southern Hemisphere through its impact on the Antarctic ozone. Using temperature, ozone, and nitric acid data from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), our results show that the average increase in stratospheric temperature reached a maximum of 34.4° on 20 September in the [60–90]°S latitude range when compared to the past 3 years. Dynamical parameters suggest a locally reversed and weakened zonal winds and a shift in the location of the polar jet vortex. This led to air masses mixing, to a reduced polar stratospheric clouds formation detected at a ground station, and as such to lower ozone and nitric acid depletion. 2019 total ozone columns for the months of September, October, and November were on average higher by 29%, 28%, and 26%, respectively, when compared to the 11-year average of the same months., SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published

Abstract

This paper assesses the quality of IASI (Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer)/Metop-A (IASI-A) and IASI/Metop-B (IASI-B) ozone (O3) products (total and partial O3 columns) retrieved with the Fast Optimal Retrievals on Layers for IASI Ozone (FORLI-O3; v20151001) software for 9 years (2008-July 2017) through an extensive intercomparison and validation exercise using independent observations (satellite, ground-based and ozonesonde). Compared with the previous version of FORLI-O3 (v20140922), several improvements have been introduced in FORLI-O3 v20151001, including absorbance look-up tables recalculated to cover a larger spectral range, with additional numerical corrections. This leads to a change of ĝ1/4 4 % in the total ozone column (TOC) product, which is mainly associated with a decrease in the retrieved O3 concentration in the middle stratosphere (above 30 hPa/25 km). IASI-A and IASI-B TOCs are consistent, with a global mean difference of less than 0.3 % for both daytime and nighttime measurements; IASI-A is slightly higher than IASI-B. A global difference of less than 2.4 % is found for the tropospheric (TROPO) O3 column product (IASI-A is lower than IASI-B), which is partly due to a temporary issue related to the IASI-A viewing angle in 2015. Our validation shows that IASI-A and IASI-B TOCs are consistent with GOME-2 (Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment-2), Dobson, Brewer, SAOZ (Système d'Analyse par Observation Zénithale) and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) TOCs, with global mean differences in the range of 0.1 %-2 % depending on the instruments compared. The worst agreement with UV-vis retrieved TOC (satellite and ground) is found at the southern high latitudes. The IASI-A and ground-based TOC comparison for the period from 2008 to July 2017 shows the long-Term stability of IASI-A, with insignificant or small negative drifts of 1 %-3 % decadeĝ'1. The comparison results of IASI-A and IASI-B against smoothed FTIR and ozonesonde partial O3 columns vary with altitude and latitude, with the maximum standard deviation being seen for the 300-150 hPa column (20 %-40 %) due to strong ozone variability and large total retrievals errors. Compared with ozonesonde data, the IASI-A and IASI-B O3 TROPO column (defined as the column between the surface and 300 hPa) is positively biased in the high latitudes (4 %-5 %) and negatively biased in the midlatitudes and tropics (11 %-13 % and 16 %-19 %, respectively). The IASI-A-To-ozonesonde TROPO comparison for the period from 2008 to 2016 shows a significant negative drift in the Northern Hemisphere of ĝ'8.6±3.4 % decadeĝ'1, which is also found in the IASI-A-To-FTIR TROPO comparison. When considering the period from 2011 to 2016, the drift value for the TROPO column decreases and becomes statistically insignificant. Abstract

International audience; The IASI family of instruments has been sounding the atmosphere since 2006 onboard the Metop satellite series. Using the radiance data recorded in the thermal infrared spectral range, concentrations for atmospheric pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), ozone (O3), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ammonia (NH3) can be derived. IASI CO and O3 elds are currently assimilated in regional and global models in order to predict air quality over Europe; SO2 alerts are delivered when exceptional levels are encountered, and NH3 source hotspots are tracked throughout the globe.Near-real time observation of these atmospheric pollutants allow to follow them at city, country and continent scales. This talk will present the ndings for 2017-2018, with a focus on re events, exceptional pollution episodes, and other unexpected features. Progresses to expect with the arrival of IASI on Metop-C and current limitations to derive long term trends will also be discussed.

Abstract

International audience; The availability of long term multispecies retrievals offers an opportunity to study spatiotemporal patterns of atmo- spheric composition, especially over large anthropogenic pollution regions. Here, we jointly analyze IASI retrievals of O3 and CO (along with OMI NO2) to explore additional observational constraints on anthropogenic pollution. In particular, we estimate the trends of the enhancement ratios derived from IASI O3 and CO and OMI NO2 over major combustion regions in China and United States. Our results show intriguing differences of dO3/dCO across Chinese megacities. In particular, Beijing and Shenzhen shows a positive linear trend (0.58±2.15 and 0.38±0.42 %/yr respectively) while Shanghai shows a negative trend (-062±0.67%/yr). This may be attributed to differences in VOC-NOx-O3 regime between these cities, which predictive models of atmospheric composition should be able to capture. On the other hand, enhancements of O3 derived from these ratios show a pattern of decreasing to increasing trend across Beijing, Shanghai, and Shenzhen which may indicate differences in combustion-related activity between these cities consistent with the developing economic status of these cities. We suggest further evaluation against other datasets (ground- based, airborne, or other retrievals) to enhance the rigor of these find- ings. Nevertheless, this study offers an impetus towards characterizing other species relationships (e.g., IASI NH3, CH4, CO2) not only as basis for monitoring consistency in atmospheric composition but also as a way to fully utilize the information content of these retrieval products in the context of data assimilation and reanalysis.
