Since some years, dense cities and compact buildings are promoted as sustainable and energy efficient designs. Nevertheless, urban planning strategies should take into account the interactions between buildings and the microclimate because the Urban Heat Island (UHI) phenomenon can increase the cooling load of buildings and is strongly influenced by urban morphology, urban landscaping and the thermal properties of buildings and soil. The modification of these parameters, such as building density, can mitigate UHI, with direct and indirect improvement of building energy performances. The case study presented in this paper concerns a new district in La Rochelle (France) named Atlantech. Currently at the design stage, the goal is to transform this old military camp into a zero carbon district. This study was performed in parallel with urban planning using EnviBatE and SOLENE-Microclimate simulation. Two building densities are compared through the impacts on solar irradiance, wind airflows, building indoor temperatures and energy demand. Analysis of reference and densified district highlights various impacts such as the wind velocity decrease, up to 80%, and the effect on an existing nearby building solar irradiation, reduced by 7%. The urban microclimate is due to complex physical interactions with the contribution of water balance, thermo-radiative exchanges and airflows. In this paper, we present and discuss modeling of heat island effects and mitigation techniques in order to give consistent results considering different time and space scales, and different fluxes (heat, water and winds) from ground to urban canopy, including buildings. The models and numerical descriptions are presented in detail and illustrated on typical examples of heat island mitigation techniques. At the neighborhood scale, alternative rainwater management techniques are studied by considering their impact on both seasonal water table depth and surface-atmosphere heat fluxes. Assessing the building thermal performance interactions with the microclimate requires adapted models that have to be refined for a better description of building envelope and systems effects. Two examples at the street and the neighborhood scale, modifying the building radiative properties or using green envelopes, show how simulation brings out the potential benefits of these techniques for the heat island mitigation and building energy performance. This paper presents the design and the results of a reduced-scale experimental bench to study the effect of green roofs and green facades on local urban microclimate. An analysis of experimental data was carried out on three street canyons: one reference street, one street between two buildings with green roofs and one with a green wall to the west. The results show a hygrothermal effect of green envelopes on buildings on urban heat island mitigation. In the detailed analysis of these green coating techniques, we highlighted that green facades modify strongly the radiative balance of the street and improve the hygrothermal comfort in urban canyons through reducing the overheating in the street in hot summer days. In this paper, a newly developed heat and moisture transfer model for green envelopes is integrated in a transient building simulation program (TRNSYS) in order to investigate its dynamic performances coupled with a multizone building code. On the one hand we focus on the understanding of the coupled heat and mass transfers between green envelopes and the building; and on the other hand we study the model accuracy to assess the vegetation impacts together with building design. At first, the model reliability is verified through experimental comparisons during a summer period. Then, the developed simulation tool is used to assess the impacts of green walls on building energy performance. Since this model involves different hygrothermal transfer phenomena, the detailed numerical model results are analyzed to determine the weight of each phenomenon: evapotranspiration, shading effect and additional thermal resistance of green roof or wall. The results highlight the thermal benefits in summer and winter, especially for the west walls. The analysis of the different transfer mechanisms show that the foliage shading reduces the surface temperature variation whereas the evapotranspiration ensures the passive cooling when the water availability is sufficient. Abstract: Energy performance of air conditioned buildings and summer comfort can be improved with high solar reflectance and high emittance of building envelopes. Widely used for roofs, this technique known as cool roof, has a direct impact on the external surface temperatures peaks which reduces both heat transfer to the building and to the environment. In this paper, this technique used with façades is experimented in a confined environment similar to a typical urban scene. This reduced-scale of 4 street canyon rows is designed in order to give realistic measurements of thermal confinement. Then, the temperatures of a street canyon with brown cool selective paint façades are compared with a standard brown coating on another street façades, and with an asymmetrical configuration. The analysis of thermal effects on both buildings and outdoor environments gives interesting prospects for urban heat island mitigation. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In urban areas, the climatic loads on buildings in summer conditions are largely affected by solar radiation. In this paper a modified simplified method for radiant interchange determination is used in a solar energy study. The good agreement with the radiosity method allows one to use this simplified method in the street canyon case. In a building pilot study, parametric analysis and building thermal behaviour can be assessed by simplified models which are useful for long-period simulation. Then this radiant interchange model is introduced in a zonal model of a canyon street and performed with a variable climatic conditions show case. The solar radiation is the only driving force in the street air movement. The interest of such approach for complex coupled phenomena studies is highlighted by obtained results and the assessment of variable climatic loads for different building zones can be considered with the model detailed herein. Future developments are planned in order to improve simulation accuracy by the addition of other local phenomena. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We developed and studied key performance indexes and representations of energy simulation heat fluxes to evaluate the performance of the evaporative cooling process as a passive cooling technique for a commercial building typology. These performance indexes, related to indoor thermal comfort, energy consumption and their interactions with their surrounding environments, contribute to understanding the interactions between the urban climate and building for passive cooling integration. We compare the performance indexes for current and future climates (2080), according to the highest emission scenario A2 of the Special Report on Emission Scenario (SRES). Specific building models were adapted with both green roof and wetted roof techniques. The results show that summer thermal discomfort will increase due to climate change and could become as problematic as winter thermal discomfort in a temperate climate. Thanks to evapotranspiration phenomena, the sensible heat contribution of the building to the urban heat island (UHI) is reduced for both current and future climates with a green roof. The performance of the vegetative roof is related to the water content of the substrate. For wetted roofs, the impacts on heat transferred to the surrounding environment are higher for a Mediterranean climate (Marseille), which is warmer and drier than the Paris climate studied (current and future climates). This article presents the results obtained an experiment carried out to measure the thermal impacts of green walls on buildings. The experiment deals with full monitoring of a green wall set up on a scaled-down experimental mockup of buildings located in La Rochelle city. Results underline the positive effect of green walls in summer and show moderate reduction of heat losses in winter. The distinction made between measured heat gains and heat losses through the compared façades helps to apprehend the energy impact of the envelopes greening. Besides, we analyzed through experimental observations the dynamic behavior of the green wall system, and we highlighted the importance of such an experimental model to take into account the vertical hygrothermal effects. The primary objective is better understanding of the thermohydric behavior and the energy impact of green walls by direct comparison between data recorded simultaneously on different configurations of buildings and streets with and without use green walls. Measurements of temperature, humidity and heat fluxes through façades with and without greening provide valuable data to assess performances of this technique, to analyze the thermal effects, and finally this gives data for further numerical studies. Urban courtyards are well known for their potential thermal performances in vernacular urban morphology. Furthermore, in a more general approach considering various cities and locations, new building uses, and climate changes, a correct courtyard design requires an accurate understanding of the complex interactions between buildings and their surroundings. This study aims to develop tools and processes to optimize the design of these urban courtyards. A microclimate model is developed and integrated in a building simulation software (TRNSYS) to evaluate the thermal microclimatic conditions of courtyard building, and their heating and cooling energy demand. A specific zonal model is developed for the local courtyard microclimate, which is coupled with a previously developed thermoradiative model. Indoor conditions are modeled by the multizone building model of TRNSYS. This methodology is used to investigate the microclimatic influence of different courtyard morphology on their thermal behavior in three different climates (hot, temperate and cold). An extended study on the impact of courtyard aspect ratios has been carried out. In order to optimize the courtyard heating and cooling energy needs, a multiple regression analysis was further used to develop the fast prediction model and then select the non-dominated solutions using pareto efficiency. The results suggest optimal morphology in order to enhance the energy performance of the courtyard, from which square shape is more advantageous in cold climates (reduced heating energy needs by approximately 48%), while the deep and less wide shape is more advantageous for hot and arid climates (reduced the cooling energy needs by about 10%). For temperate climate, the shape guaranteeing minimum energy needs and, in all seasons, is the one with less width and medium depth (allowing a reduction in energy needs of about 58%). • An outdoor zonal approach coupled with a BES was developed. • Courtyard air temperatures of the developed model were compared to CFD results. • A parametric study was performed for 100 courtyard designs with different climates. • A multiple regression analysis was used to optimize the courtyard energy needs. The single family home market is facing increasing challenges in managing environmental issues. The required objective of building energy performance can be achieved by limiting extra cost, integrating building design, and using the most appropriate and readily available materials. However, standard computations, such as the French building energy code used here, require vocational expertise that involves managing separate processes and numerous design variables. The design is therefore restricted to well-known techniques, especially for small constructions. In this paper, the usual stakeholder constraints and possible developments in design practice are considered through the use of real product databases and vocational tools to calculate construction costs. In the first stage, which takes into account cost and energy demand, an integrated approach to building envelope design is detailed, including a semantic system to automate the process. Then an optimization method (a genetic algorithm) is proposed to assess energy performance and the cost of the building envelope. This process is illustrated as a case study for a single family house. In this paper, we propose a practical approach for decision-making regarding passive cooling design for buildings in dense urban contexts. For non-cooled buildings under temperate climates, assessment of summer thermal discomfort determines the usual passive cooling design together with fossil energy and GHG savings at earth scale. However, passive cooling techniques for indoor climate can be also valuable for local environment impacts, especially urban heat islands’ mitigation. Lack of simple representative criteria and complexity of simulation outputs constitute a barrier for the development of passive cooling. Based on a study of a generic commercial building, we analyzed several designs with Sankey diagram and we developed two performance indexes. This chart synthesis of complex output data allows a direct comparison of design solutions. This analysis gives hints for better designer understanding of urban climate and building interactions for the studied passive cooling solutions: cool roofing, nocturnal natural ventilation and rooftop PV system as shading device. Our results show that nocturnal natural ventilation is efficient to moderate indoor overheating compared to the "cool roof". In addition, cool roofs reduce anthropogenic heat transferred to urban environment. PV panels as shading device mitigate summer discomfort and produce energy that increase building energy efficiency through the year. We defined two Key Performance Indexes (KPIs) to define cooling potential of both indoor and urban environment. These KPIs obtained for different temperate climates highlight new prospects for the design of efficient urban designs with controlled environmental impacts and decision process of stakeholders. The global effects of climate change will increase the frequency and intensity of extreme events such as heatwaves and power outages, which have consequences for buildings and their cooling systems. Buildings and their cooling systems should be designed and operated to be resilient under such events to protect occupants from potentially dangerous indoor thermal conditions. This study performed a critical review on the state-of-the-art of cooling strategies, with special attention to their performance under heatwaves and power outages. We proposed a definition of resilient cooling and described four criteria for resilience—absorptive capacity, adaptive capacity, restorative capacity, and recovery speed —and used them to qualitatively evaluate the resilience of each strategy. The literature review and qualitative analyses show that to attain resilient cooling, the four resilience criteria should be considered in the design phase of a building or during the planning of retrofits. The building and relevant cooling system characteristics should be considered simultaneously to withstand extreme events. A combination of strategies with different resilience capacities, such as a passive envelope strategy coupled with a low-energy space-cooling solution, may be needed to obtain resilient cooling. Abstract: This paper describes a dynamic model of transient heat and mass transfer across a green roof component. The thermal behavior of the green roof layers is modeled and coupled to the water balance in the substrate that is determined accounting for evapotranspiration. The water balance variations over time directly impact the physical properties of the substrate and the evapotranspiration intensity. This thermal and hydric model incorporates wind speed effects within the foliage through a new calculation of the resistance to heat and mass transfer within the leaf canopy. The developed model is validated with experimental data from a one-tenth-scale green roof located at the University of La Rochelle. A comparison between the numerical and the experimental results demonstrates the accuracy of the model for predicting the substrate temperature and water content variations. The heat and mass transfer mechanisms through green roofs are analyzed and explained using the modeled energy balances, and parametric studies of green roof behavior are presented. A surface temperature difference of up to 25°C was found among green roofs with a dry growing medium or a saturated growing medium. Furthermore, the thermal inertia effects, which are usually simplified or neglected, are taken into account and shown to affect the temperature and flux results. This study highlights the importance of a coupled evapotranspiration process model for the accurate assessment of the passive cooling effect of green roofs. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
