Phonons in solid-state quantum emitters play a crucial role in their performance as photon sources in quantum technology. For resonant driving, phonons dampen the Rabi oscillations resulting in reduced preparation fidelities. The phonon spectral density, which quantifies the strength of the carrier-phonon interaction, is non-monotonous as a function of energy. As one of the most prominent consequences, this leads to the reappearance of Rabi rotations for increasing pulse power, which was theoretically predicted in Phys. Rev. Lett. 98, 227403 (2007). In this paper we present the experimental demonstration of the reappearance of Rabi rotations.

The generation of single photons using solid-state quantum emitters is pivotal for advancing photonic quantum technologies, particularly in quantum communication. As the field continuously advances towards practical use cases and beyond shielded laboratory environments, specific demands are placed on the robustness of quantum light sources during operation. In this context, the robustness of the quantum light generation process against intrinsic and extrinsic effects is a major challenge. Here, we present a robust scheme for the coherent generation of indistinguishable single-photon states with very low photon number coherence (PNC) using a three-level system in a semiconductor quantum dot. Our novel approach combines the advantages of adiabatic rapid passage (ARP) and stimulated two-photon excitation (sTPE). We demonstrate robust quantum light generation while maintaining the prime quantum-optical quality of the emitted light state. The continuous technological development of electronic devices and the introduction of new materials leads to ever greater demands on the fabrication of semiconductor heterostructures and their characterization. This work focuses on optimizing Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) depth profiles of semiconductor heterostructures aiming at a minimization of measurement-induced profile broadening. As model system, a state-of-the-art Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) grown multilayer homostructure consisting of $^{\textit{nat}}$Si/$^{28}$Si bilayers with only 2 nm in thickness is investigated while varying the most relevant sputter parameters. Atomic concentration-depth profiles are determined and an error function based description model is used to quantify layer thicknesses as well as profile broadening. The optimization process leads to an excellent resolution of the multilayer homostructure. The results of this optimization guide to a ToF-SIMS analysis of another MBE grown heterostructure consisting of a strained and highly purified $^{28}$Si layer sandwiched between two Si$_{0.7}$Ge$_{0.3}$ layers. Sample Return Capsules (SRCs) entering Earth's atmosphere at hypervelocity from interplanetary space are a valuable resource for studying meteor phenomena. The 24 September 2023 arrival of the OSIRIS-REx (Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, and Security-Regolith Explorer) SRC provided an unprecedented chance for geophysical observations of a well-characterized source with known parameters, including timing and trajectory. A collaborative effort involving researchers from 16 institutions executed a carefully planned geophysical observational campaign at strategically chosen locations, deploying over 400 ground-based sensors encompassing infrasound, seismic, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), and GPS technologies. Additionally, balloons equipped with infrasound sensors were launched to capture signals at higher altitudes. This campaign (the largest of its kind so far) yielded a wealth of invaluable data anticipated to fuel scientific inquiry for years to come. The success of the observational campaign is evidenced by the near-universal detection of signals across instruments, both proximal and distal. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of the collective scientific effort, field deployment, and preliminary findings. The early findings have the potential to inform future space missions and terrestrial campaigns, contributing to our understanding of meteoroid interactions with planetary atmospheres. Furthermore, the dataset collected during this campaign will improve entry and propagation models as well as augment the study of atmospheric dynamics and shock phenomena generated by meteoroids and similar sources., Comment: 87 pages, 14 figures

With the realization of controlled quantum systems, exploring excitations beyond the resonant case opens new possibilities. We investigate an extended Jaynes-Cummings model where two photon modes are coupled off-resonantly to a quantum emitter. This allows us to identify few-photon scattering mechanisms that lead to a full inversion of the emitter while transferring off-resonant photons from one mode to another. This behaviour connects to recent measurements of a two-level emitter scattering two off-resonant photons simultaneously. Furthermore, our results can be understood as quantized analogue of the recently developed off-resonant quantum control scheme known as Swing-UP of quantum EmitteR (SUPER). Understanding crystal characteristics down to the atomistic level increasingly emerges as a crucial insight for creating solid state platforms for qubits with reproducible and homogeneous properties. Here, isotope composition depth profiles in a SiGe/$^{28}$Si/SiGe heterostructure are analyzed with atom probe tomography (APT) and time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectrometry. Spin-echo dephasing times $T_2^{echo}=128 \mu s$ and valley energy splittings around $200 \mu eV$ have been observed for single spin qubits in this quantum well (QW) heterostructure, pointing towards the suppression of qubit decoherence through hyperfine interaction or via scattering between valley states. The concentration of nuclear spin-carrying $^{29}$Si is 50 ppm in the $^{28}$Si QW. APT allows to uncover that both the top SiGe/$^{28}$Si and the bottom $^{28}$Si/SiGe interfaces of the QW are shaped by epitaxial growth front segregation signatures on a few monolayer scale. A subsequent thermal treatment broadens the top interface by about two monolayers, while the width of the bottom interface remains unchanged. Using a tight-binding model including SiGe alloy disorder, these experimental results suggest that the combination of the slightly thermally broadened top interface and of a minimal Ge concentration of $0.3 \%$ in the QW, resulting from segregation, is instrumental for the observed large valley splitting. Minimal Ge additions $< 1 \%$, which get more likely in thin QWs, will hence support high valley splitting without compromising coherence times. At the same time, taking thermal treatments during device processing as well as the occurrence of crystal growth characteristics into account seems important for the design of reproducible qubit properties., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Because dark excitons in quantum dots are not directly optically accessible, so far they have not played a significant role in using quantum dots for photon generation. They possess significantly longer lifetimes than their brighter counterparts and hence offer enormous potential for photon storage or manipulation. In this work, we demonstrate an all-optical storage and retrieval of the spin-forbidden dark exciton in a quantum dot from the ground state employing chirped pulses and an in-plane magnetic field. Our experimental findings are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions of the dynamics calculated using state-of-the-art product tensor methods. Our scheme enables an all-optical control of dark states without relying on any preceding decays. This opens up a new dimension for optimal quantum control and time-bin entangled photon pair generation from quantum dots.

Entangled photon pairs form the foundation for many applications in the realm of quantum communication. For fiber-optic transfer of entangled photon pairs, time-bin encoding can potentially offer an improved stability compared to polarization encoded qubits. Here, we lay the theoretical foundations to describe the measurement of time-bin entangled photons. We derive multi-time correlation functions of the time-bin encoded photon pairs, corresponding to quantum state tomographic measurements. Our theory can be the starting point to extend the simulations to include all kinds of loss or decoherence effects that apply in a specific quantum system for realistic simulation for time-bin entanglement from quantum emitters., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures

The coherent excitation of an optically active spin system is one of the key elements in the engineering of a spin-photon interface. In this work, we use the novel SUPER scheme, employing nonresonant ultrashort optical pulses, to coherently control the main optical transition of a tin-vacancy color center in diamond, a promising emitter that can both be utilized as a quantum memory and a single-photon source. Furthermore, we implement a subpicosecond control scheme using resonant pulses for achieving record short quantum gates applied to diamond color centers. The employed ultrafast quantum gates open up a new regime of quantum information processing with solid-state color centers, eventually enabling multi-gate operations with the optical qubit and efficient spectral filtering of the excitation laser from deterministically prepared coherent photons., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Nonlinear optical signals in optically driven quantum systems can reveal coherences and thereby open up the possibility for manipulation of quantum states. While the limiting cases of ultrafast and continuous-wave excitation have been extensively studied, the time-dynamics of finite pulses bear interesting phenomena. In this paper, we explore the nonlinear optical probe signals of a two-level system excited with a laser pulse of finite duration. In addition to the prominent Mollow peaks, the probe spectra feature several smaller peaks for certain time delays. Similar features have been recently observed for resonance fluorescence signals [arxiv:2305.15827 (2023)]. We discuss that the emergent phenomena can be explained by a combination of Mollow triplet physics and perturbed free induction decay effects, providing an insightful understanding of the underlying physics.

Entangled photon pairs are essential for quantum communication technology. They can be generated on-demand by semiconductor quantum dots, but several mechanisms are known to reduce the degree of entanglement. While some obstacles like the finite fine-structure splitting can be overcome by now, the excitation scheme itself can impair the entanglement fidelity. Here, we demonstrate that the swing-up of quantum emitter population (SUPER) scheme applied to a quantum dot in a cavity yields almost perfectly entangled photons. The entanglement degree remains robust against phonon influences even at elevated temperatures, due to decoupling of the excitation and emission process. With this achievement, quantum dots are ready to be used as entangled photon pair sources in applications requiring high degrees of entanglement up to temperatures of about $80\,$K., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures + appendix

A scalable source of single photons is a key constituent of an efficient quantum photonic architecture. To realize this, it is beneficial to have an ensemble of quantum emitters that can be collectively excited with high efficiency. Semiconductor quantum dots hold great potential in this context, due to their excellent photophysical properties. Spectral variability of quantum dots is commonly regarded as a drawback introduced by the fabrication method. However, this is beneficial to realize a frequency-multiplexed single-photon platform. Chirped pulse excitation, relying on the so-called adiabatic rapid passage, is the most efficient scheme to excite a quantum dot ensemble due to its immunity to individual quantum dot parameters. Yet, the existing methods of generating chirped laser pulses to excite a quantum emitter are bulky, lossy, and mechanically unstable, which severely hampers the prospects of a quantum dot photon source. Here, we present a compact, robust, and high-efficiency alternative for chirped pulse excitation of solid-state quantum emitters. Our simple plug-and-play module consists of chirped fiber Bragg gratings (CFBGs), fabricated via femtosecond inscription, to provide high values of dispersion in the near-infrared spectral range, where the quantum dots emit. We characterize and benchmark the performance of our method via chirped excitation of a GaAs quantum dot, establishing high-fidelity single-photon generation. Our highly versatile chirping module coupled to a photon source is a significant milestone toward realizing practical quantum photonic devices.

The interaction of a resonant light field with a quantum two-level system is of key interest both for fundamental quantum optics and quantum technological applications employing resonant excitation. While emission under resonant continuous-wave excitation has been well-studied, the more complex emission spectrum of dynamically dressed states, a quantum two-level system driven by resonant pulsed excitation, has so far been investigated in detail only theoretically. Here, we present the first experimental observation of the complete resonance fluorescence emission spectrum of a single quantum two-level system, in form of an excitonic transition in a semiconductor quantum dot, driven by finite Gaussian pulses. We observe multiple emerging sidebands as predicted by theory with an increase of their number and spectral detuning with excitation pulse intensity and a dependence of their spectral shape and intensity on the pulse length. Detuning-dependent measurements provide additional insights into the emission features. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with theoretical calculations of the emission spectra, corroborating our findings.

Semiconductor quantum dots have emerged as an especially promising platform for the generation of polarization-entangled photon pairs. However, it was demonstrated recently that the two-photon excitation scheme employed in state-of-the-art experiments limits the achievable degree of entanglement by introducing which-path information. In this work, the combined impact of two-photon excitation and longitudinal acoustic phonons on photon pairs emitted by strongly-confining quantum dots is investigated. It is found that phonons further reduce the achievable degree of entanglement even in the limit of vanishing temperature due to phonon-induced pure dephasing and phonon-assisted one-photon processes, which increase the reexcitation probability. In addition, the degree of entanglement, as measured by the concurrence, decreases with rising temperature and/or pulse duration, even if the excitonic fine-structure splitting is absent and when higher electronic states are out of reach. Furthermore, in the case of finite fine-structure splittings, phonons enlarge the discrepancy in concurrence for different laser polarizations., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

To coherently control a few-level quantum emitter, typically pulses with an energy resonant to the transition energy are applied making use of the Rabi mechanism, while a single off-resonant pulse does not result in a population inversion. Surprisingly, a two-color excitation with a combination of two off-resonant pulses making use of the Swing-UP of quantum EmitteR population (SUPER) mechanism is able to invert the system. In this paper, we provide an in-depth analysis of the SUPER scheme within the dressed-state picture. We show that the SUPER mechanism can be understood as a driving of the transition between the dressed states. In the two-level system this allows us to derive analytic expressions for the pulse parameters yielding a population inversion. We extend our considerations to the three-level system, where a strong mixing between the bare states takes place. The insights gained from these results help in finding accessible regimes for further experimental realizations of the SUPER scheme and similar two-color excitation schemes., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Identifying phases and analyzing the stability of dynamic states are ubiquitous and important problems which appear in various physical systems. Nonetheless, drawing a phase diagram in high-dimensional and large parameter spaces has remained challenging. Here, we propose a data-driven method to derive the phase diagram of lasing modes in topological insulator lasers. The classification is based on the temporal behaviour of the topological modes obtained via numerical integration of the rate equation. A semi-supervised learning method is used and an adaptive library is constructed in order to distinguish the different topological modes present in the generated parameter space. The proposed method successfully distinguishes the different topological phases in the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) lattice with saturable gain.This demonstrates the possibility of classifying the topological phases without needing for expert knowledge of the system and may give valuable insight into the fundamental physics of topological insulator lasers via reverse engineering., Comment: 13 pages, 12 figures

For a scalable photonic device producing entangled photons, it is desirable to have multiple quantum emitters in an ensemble that can be collectively excited, despite their spectral variability. For quantum dots, Rabi rotation, the most popular method for resonant excitation, cannot assure a universal, highly efficient excited state preparation, because of its sensitivity to the excitation parameters. In contrast, Adiabatic Rapid Passage (ARP), relying on chirped optical pulses, is immune to quantum dot spectral inhomogeneity. Here, we advocate the robustness of ARP for simultaneous excitation of the biexciton states of multiple quantum dots. For positive chirps, we find that there is also regime of phonon advantage that widens the tolerance range of spectral detunings. Using the same laser pulse we demonstrate the simultaneous excitation of energetically and spatially distinct quantum dots. Being able to generate spatially multiplexed entangled photon pairs is a big step towards the scalability of photonic devices.

Based on recent calculations of the self-diffusion (SD) coefficient in amorphous silicon (a-Si) by classical Molecular Dynamics simulation [M. Posselt, H. Bracht, and D. Radi\'c, J. Appl. Phys. 131, 035102 (2022)] detailed investigations on atomic mechanisms are performed. For this purpose two Stillinger-Weber-type potentials are employed, one strongly overestimates the SD coefficient, while the other leads to values much closer to the experimental data. By taking into account the individual squared displacements (or diffusion lengths) of atoms the diffusional and vibrational contributions to the total mean squared displacement can be determined separately. It is shown that the diffusional part is not directly correlated with the concentration of coordination defects. The time-dependent distribution of squared displacements of atoms indicates that in a-Si a well-defined elemental diffusion length does not exist, in contrast to SD in the crystalline Si. The analysis of atoms with large squared displacements reveals that the mechanisms of SD in a-Si are characterized by complex rearrangements of bonds or exchange of neighbors. These are mono- and bi-directional exchanges of neighbors and neighbor replacements. Exchanges or replacements may concern up to three neighbors and may occur in relatively short periods of some ps. Bi- or mono-directional exchange or replacement of one neighbor atom happen more frequently than processes including more neighbors. A comparison of results for the two interatomic potentials shows that an increased three-body parameter only slows down the migration, but does not change the migration mechanisms fundamentally., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures
