Space debris and inactive satellites pose a threat to the safety and integrity of operational spacecraft and motivate the need for space situational awareness techniques. These uncooperative targets create a challenging tracking and detection problem due to a lack of prior knowledge of their features, trajectories, or even existence. Recent advancements in computer vision models can be used to improve upon existing methods for tracking such uncooperative targets to make them more robust and reliable to the wide-ranging nature of the target. This paper introduces an autonomous detection model designed to identify and monitor these objects using learning and computer vision. The autonomous detection method aims to identify and accurately track the uncooperative targets in varied circumstances, including different camera spectral sensitivities, lighting, and backgrounds. Our method adapts to the relative distance between the observing spacecraft and the target, and different detection strategies are adjusted based on distance. At larger distances, we utilize You Only Look Once (YOLOv8), a multitask Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), for zero-shot and domain-specific single-shot real time detection of the target. At shorter distances, we use knowledge distillation to combine visual foundation models with a lightweight fast segmentation CNN (Fast-SCNN) to segment the spacecraft components with low storage requirements and fast inference times, and to enable weight updates from earth and possible onboard training. The superadiabatic dynamical density functional theory (superadiabatic-DDFT) is a promising new method for the study of colloidal systems out-of-equilibrium. Within this approach the viscous forces arising from interparticle interactions are accounted for in a natural way by treating explicitly the dynamics of the two-body correlations. For bulk systems subject to spatially homogeneous shear we use the superadiabatic-DDFT framework to calculate the steady-state pair distribution function and the corresponding viscosity for low values of the shear-rate. We then consider a variant of the central approximation underlying this superadiabatic theory and obtain an inhomogeneous generalization of a rheological bulk theory due to Russel and Gast. This paper thus establishes for the first time a connection between DDFT approaches, formulated to treat inhomogeneous systems, and existing work addressing nonequilibrium microstructure and rheology in bulk colloidal suspensions.

Superadiabatic dynamical density functional theory (superadiabatic-DDFT), a first-principles approach based on the inhomogeneous two-body correlation functions, is employed to investigate the response of interacting Brownian particles to time-dependent external driving. Predictions for the superadiabatic dynamics of the one-body density are made directly from the underlying interparticle interactions, without need for either adjustable fit parameters or simulation input. The external potentials we investigate have been chosen to probe distinct aspects of structural relaxation in dense, strongly interacting liquid states. Nonequilibrium density profiles predicted by the superadiabatic theory are compared with those obtained from both adiabatic DDFT and event-driven Brownian dynamics simulation. Our findings show that superadiabatic-DDFT accurately predicts the time-evolution of the one-body density.

For classical many-body systems subject to Brownian dynamics we develop a superadiabatic dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) for the description of inhomogeneous fluids out-of-equilibrium. By explicitly incorporating the dynamics of the inhomogeneous two-body correlation functions we obtain superadiabatic forces directly from the microscopic interparticle interactions. We demonstrate the importance of these nonequilibrium forces for an accurate description of the one-body density by numerical implementation of our theory for three-dimensional hard-spheres in a time-dependent planar potential. The relaxation of the one-body density in superadiabatic-DDFT is found to be slower than that predicted by standard adiabatic DDFT and significantly improves the agreement with Brownian dynamics simulation data. We attribute this improved performance to the correct treatment of structural relaxation within the superadiabatic-DDFT. Our approach provides fundamental insight into the underlying structure of dynamical density functional theories and makes possible the study of situations for which standard approaches fail.

When a fluid is subject to an external field, as is the case near an interface or under spatial confinement, then the density becomes spatially inhomogeneous. Although the one-body density provides much useful information, a higher level of resolution is provided by the two-body correlations. These give a statistical description of the internal microstructure of the fluid and enable calculation of the average interparticle force, which plays an essential role in determining both the equilibrium and dynamic properties of interacting fluids. We present a theoretical framework for the description of inhomogeneous (classical) many-body systems, based explicitly on the two-body correlation functions. By consideration of local Noether-invariance against spatial distortion of the system we demonstrate the fundamental status of the Yvon-Born-Green (YBG) equation as a local force-balance within the fluid. Using the inhomogeneous Ornstein-Zernike equation we show that the two-body correlations are density functionals and, thus, that the average interparticle force entering the YBG equation is also a functional of the one-body density. The force-based theory we develop provides an alternative to standard density functional theory for the study of inhomogeneous systems both in- and out-of-equilibrium. We compare force-based density profiles to the results of the standard potential-based (dynamical) density functional theory. In equilibrium, we confirm both analytically and numerically that the standard approach yields profiles that are consistent with the compressibility pressure, whereas the force-density functional gives profiles consistent with the virial pressure. The structure of the theory offers deep insights into the nature of correlation in dense and inhomogeneous systems.

A Brownian particle performs gyrating motion around a potential energy minimum when subjected to thermal noises from two different heat baths. Here, we propose a magneto-gyrator made of a single charged Brownian particle that is steered by an external magnetic field. Key properties, such as the direction of gyration, the torque exerted by the engine on the confining potential and the maximum power delivered by the microengine can be tuned by varying the strength and direction of the applied magnetic field. Further tunability is obtained by rotating the potential in the plane perpendicular to the direction of the magnetic filed. We show that in this generic scenario, the microengine can be stalled and even reversed by the magnetic field. Finally, we highlight a property of the magneto-gyrator that has no counterpart in the overdamped approximation--the heat loss from the hot to cold bath requires explicit knowledge of the mass of the particle. For the three-dimensional hard-sphere model we investigate the inhomogeneous two-body correlations predicted by Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory. For the special cases in which the density has either planar or spherical symmetry we provide analytic formulae for the Hankel and Legendre transforms, respectively, of the inhomogeneous two-body direct correlation function as explicit functionals of the density. When combined with the Ornstein-Zernike relation our analytical results allow for rapid calculation of inhomogeneous hard-sphere density correlations in real-space. These provide not only information about the packing structures of the hard-sphere system, but also form an essential building-block for constructing perturbation theories of more realistic models.

The Barker-Henderson perturbation theory is a bedrock of liquid-state physics, providing quantitative predictions for the bulk thermodynamic properties of realistic model systems. However, this successful method has not been exploited for the study of inhomogeneous systems. We develop and implement a first-principles 'Barker-Henderson density functional', thus providing a robust and quantitatively accurate theory for classical fluids in external fields. Numerical results are presented for the hard-core Yukawa model in three dimensions. Our predictions for the density around a fixed test particle and between planar walls are in very good agreement with simulation data. The density profiles for the free liquid vapour interface show the expected oscillatory decay into the bulk liquid as the temperature is reduced towards the triple point, but with an amplitude much smaller than that predicted by the standard mean-field density functional.

Dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) is a powerful variational framework to study the nonequilibrium properties of colloids by only considering a time-dependent one-body number density. Despite the large number of recent successes, properly modeling the long-time dynamics in interacting systems within DDFT remains a notoriously difficult problem, since structural information, accounting for temporary or permanent particle cages, gets lost. Here we address such a caging scenario by reducing it to a clean one-dimensional problem, where the particles are naturally ordered (arranged on a line) by perfect cages created by their two next neighbors. In particular, we construct a DDFT approximation based on an equilibrium system with an asymmetric pair potential, such that the corresponding one-body densities still carry the footprint of particle order. Applied to a system of confined hard rods, this order-preserving dynamics (OPD) yields exact results at the system boundaries, in addition to the imprinted correct long-time behavior of density profiles representing individual particles. In an open system, our approach correctly reproduces the reduced long-time diffusion coefficient and subdiffusion, characteristic for a single-file setup. We study the motion of a Brownian particle subjected to Lorentz force due to an external magnetic field. Each spatial degree of freedom of the particle is coupled to a different thermostat. We show that the magnetic field results in correlation between different velocity components in the stationary state. Integrating the velocity autocorrelation matrix, we obtain the diffusion matrix that enters the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density. The eigenvectors of the diffusion matrix do not align with the temperature axes. As a consequence the Brownian particle performs spatially correlated diffusion. We further show that in the presence of an isotropic confining potential, an unusual, flux-free steady state emerges which is characterized by a non-Boltzmann density distribution, which can be rotated by reversing the magnetic field. The nontrivial steady state properties of our system result from the Lorentz force induced coupling of the spatial degrees of freedom which cease to exist in equilibrium corresponding to a single-temperature system.

In systems with overdamped dynamics, the Lorentz force reduces the diffusivity of a Brownian particle in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. The anisotropy in diffusion implies that the Fokker-Planck equation for the probabiliy distribution of the particle acquires a tensorial coefficient. The tensor, however, is not a typical diffusion tensor due to the antisymmetric elements which account for the fact that Lorentz force curves the trajectory of a moving charged particle. This gives rise to unusual dynamics with features such as additional Lorentz fluxes and a nontrivial density distribution, unlike a diffusive system. The equilibrium properties are, however, unaffected by the Lorentz force. Here we show that by stochastically resetting the Brownian particle, a nonequilibrium steady state can be created which preserves the hallmark features of dynamics under Lorentz force. We then consider a minimalistic example of spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field, which shows how Lorentz fluxes fundamentally alter the boundary conditions giving rise to an unusual stationary state.

The Fokker-Planck equation provides complete statistical description of a particle undergoing random motion in a solvent. In the presence of Lorentz force due to an external magnetic field, the Fokker-Planck equation picks up a tensorial coefficient, which reflects the anisotropy of the particle's motion. This tensor, however, can not be interpreted as a diffusion tensor; there are antisymmetric terms which give rise to fluxes perpendicular to the density gradients. Here, we show that for an inhomogeneous magnetic field these nondiffusive fluxes have finite divergence and therefore affect the density evolution of the system. We consider the nonequilibrium dynamics of a charged active Brownian particle in the presence of a space dependent magnetic field. It has recently been shown that the Lorentz force induces a particle flux perpendicular to density gradients, thus preventing a diffusive description of the dynamics. Whereas a passive system will eventually relax to an equilibrium state, unaffected by the magnetic field, an active system subject to a spatially varying Lorentz force settles into a nonequilibrium steady state characterized by an inhomogeneous density and divergence-free bulk fluxes. A macroscopic flux of charged active particles is induced by the gradient of the magnetic field only and does not require additional symmetric breaking such as density or potential gradients. This stands in marked contrast to similar phenomena in condensed matter such as the classical Hall effect. In a confined geometry we observe circulating fluxes, which can be reversed by inverting the direction of the magnetic field. Our theoretical approach, based on coarse-graining of the Fokker-Planck equation, yields analytical results for the density, fluxes, and polarization in the steady state, all of which are validated by direct computer simulation. We demonstrate that passive tracer particles can be used to measure the essential effects of the Lorentz force on the active particle bath, and we discuss under which conditions the effects of the flux could be observed experimentally., Comment: 18 Pages, 6 Figures

Activity significantly enhances the escape rate of a Brownian particle over a potential barrier. Whereas constant activity has been extensively studied in the past, little is known about the effect of time-dependent activity on the escape rate of the particle. In this paper we study the escape problem for a Brownian particle that is transiently active; the activity decreases rapidly during the escape process. Using the effective equilibrium approach we analytically calculate the escape rate, under the assumption that the particle is either completely passive or fully active when crossing the barrier. We perform numerical simulations of the escape process in one dimension and find good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

We generalize the particle-conserving dynamics method of de las Heras et al. [J. Phys. Condens. Matter: 28, 24404 (2016).] to binary mixtures and apply this to hard rods in one dimension. Considering the case of one species consisting of only one particle enables us to address the tagged-particle dynamics. The time-evolution of the species-labeled density profiles is compared to exact Brownian dynamics and (grand-canonical) dynamical density functional theory. The particle conserving dynamics yields improved results over the dynamical density functional theory and well reproduces the simulation data at short and intermediate times. However, the neglect of a strict particle order (due to the fundamental statistical assumption of ergodicity) leads to errors at long times for our one-dimensional setup. The isolated study of that error makes clear the fundamental limitations of (adiabatic) density-based theoretical approaches when applied to systems of any dimension for which particle caging is a dominant physical mechanism.

We explore the pressure of active particles on curved surfaces and its relation to other interfacial properties. We use both direct simulations of the active systems as well as simulations of an equilibrium system with effective (pair) interactions designed to capture the effects of activity. Comparing the active and effective passive systems in terms of their bulk pressure, we elaborate that the most useful theoretical route to this quantity is via the density profile at a flat wall. This is corroborated by extending the study to curved surfaces and establishing a connection to the particle adsorption and integrated surface excess pressure (surface tension). In the ideal-gas limit, the effect of curvature on the mechanical properties can be calculated analytically in the passive system with effective interactions, and shows good (but not exact) agreement with simulations of the active models. It turns out that even the linear correction to the pressure is model specific and equals the planar adsorption in each case, which means that a known equilibrium sum rule can be extended to a regime at small but nonzero activity. In turn, the relation between the planar adsorption and the surface tension is reminiscent of the Gibbs adsorption theorem at an effective temperature. At finite densities, where particle interactions play a role, the presented effective-potential approximation captures the effect of density on the dependence of the pressure on curvature.

We study the stochastic motion of a particle subject to spatially varying Lorentz force in the small-mass limit. The limiting procedure yields an additional drift term in the overdamped equation that cannot be obtained by simply setting mass to zero in the velocity Langevin equation. We show that whereas the overdamped equation of motion accurately captures the position statistics of the particle, it leads to unphysical fluxes in the system that persist in the long time limit; an anomalous result inconsistent with thermal equilibrium. These fluxes are calculated analytically from the overdamped equation of motion and found to be in quantitative agreement with Brownian dynamics simulations. We study the phase transition dynamics of a fluid system in which the particles diffuse anisotropically in space. The motivation to study such a situation is provided by systems of interacting magnetic colloidal particles subject to the Lorentz force. The Smoluchowski equation for the many-particle probability distribution then aquires an anisotropic diffusion tensor. We show that anisotropic diffusion results in qualitatively different dynamics of spinodal decomposition compared to the isotropic case. Using the method of dynamical density functional theory, we predict that the intermediate-stage decomposition dynamics are slowed down significantly by anisotropy; the coupling between different Fourier modes is strongly reduced. In a theoretical and simulation study, active Brownian particles (ABPs) in three-dimensional bulk systems are exposed to time-varying sinusoidal activity waves that are running through the system. A linear response (Green-Kubo) formalism is applied to derive fully analytical expressions for the torque-free polarization profiles of the particles. The activity waves induce fluxes that strongly depend on the particle size and may be employed to de-mix mixtures of ABPs or to drive the particles into selected areas of the system. Three-dimensional Langevin dynamics simulations are carried out to verify the accuracy of the linear response formalism, which is shown to work best when the particles are small (i.e., highly Brownian) or operating at low activity levels., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Using overdamped Brownian dynamics simulations we investigate the isotropic-nematic (IN) transition of self-propelled rods in three spatial dimensions. For two well-known model systems (Gay-Berne potential and hard spherocylinders) we find that turning on activity moves to higher densities the phase boundary separating an isotropic phase from a (nonpolar) nematic phase. This active IN phase boundary is distinct from the boundary between isotropic and polar-cluster states previously reported in two-dimensional simulation studies and, unlike the latter, is not sensitive to the system size. We thus identify a generic feature of anisotropic active particles in three dimensions.

Using Brownian dynamics simulations we perform a systematic investigation of the shear-induced migration of colloidal particles subject to Poiseuille flow in both cylindrical and planar geometry. We find that adding an attractive component to the interparticle interaction enhances the migration effect, consistent with recent simulation studies of platelet suspensions. Monodisperse, bidisperse and polydisperse systems are studied over a range of shear rates, considering both steady states and the transient dynamics arising from the onset of flow. For bidisperse and polydisperse systems size segregation is observed.

Using dynamical density functional theory and Brownian dynamics simulations we investigate the influence of a driven tracer particle on the density distribution of a colloidal suspension at a thermodynamic statepoint close to the liquid side of the binodal. In bulk systems we find that a localized region of the colloid-poor phase, a 'cavitation bubble', forms behind the moving tracer. The extent of the cavitation bubble is investigated as a function of both the size and velocity of the tracer. The addition of a confining boundary enables us to investigate the interaction between the local phase instability at the substrate and that at the particle surface. When both the substrate and tracer interact repulsively with the colloids we observe the formation of a colloid-poor bridge between the substrate and the tracer. When a shear flow is applied parallel to the substrate the bridge becomes distorted and, at sufficiently high shear-rates, disconnects from the substrate to form a cavitation bubble.

For a system of Brownian particles interacting via a soft exponential potential we investigate the interaction between equilibrium crystallization and spatially varying shear flow. For thermodynamic state points within the liquid part of the phase diagram, but close to the crystallization phase boundary, we observe that imposing a Poiseuille flow can induce nonequilibrium crystalline ordering in regions of low shear gradient. The physical mechanism responsible for this phenomenon is shear induced particle migration, which causes particles to drift preferentially towards the center of the flow channel, thus increasing the local density in the channel center. The method employed is classical dynamical density functional theory.

We consider the steady-state behavior of pairs of active particles having different persistence times and diffusivities. To this purpose we employ the active Ornstein-Uhlenbeck model, where the particles are driven by colored noises with exponential correlation functions whose intensities and correlation times vary from species to species. By extending Fox's theory to many components, we derive by functional calculus an approximate Fokker-Planck equation for the configurational distribution function of the system. After illustrating the predicted distribution in the solvable case of two particles interacting via a harmonic potential, we consider systems of particles repelling through inverse power laws potentials. We compare the analytic predictions to computer simulations for such soft-repulsive interactions in one dimension, and show that at linear order in the persistence times the theory is satisfactory. This work provides the toolbox to qualitatively describe many-body phenomena, such as demixing and depletion, by means of effective pair potentials.

Using dynamical density functional theory (DDFT) methods we investigate the laning instability of a sheared colloidal suspension. The nonequilibrium ordering at the laning transition is driven by non-affine particle motion arising from interparticle interactions. Starting from a DDFT which incorporates the non-affine motion, we perform a linear stability analysis that enables identification of the regions of parameter space where lanes form. We illustrate our general approach by applying it to a simple one-component fluid of soft penetrable particles.
