California is the nation’s primary producer of almonds, pistachios, and walnuts, and an important producer of rice. Because of California’s diverse cropping systems, off-target herbicide drift can be a considerable problem, particularly from aerial applications that are commonly used in flooded rice production systems. Triclopyr is an auxin-mimic type herbicide that has been commonly used in rice for many years for control of broadleaf weeds and the industry is familiar with symptoms of off-target triclopyr drift. Florpyrauxifen-benzyl is a newly registered auxin-mimic herbicide in California rice with activity on key weeds and is being rapidly adopted. Although symptoms typically are similar among auxinic herbicides, it is important to understand subtle differences and risks among these herbicides as stewardship for newly registered products. This research was conducted in 2020 and 2021 to determine the relative sensitivity of almond, pistachio, and walnut trees to simulated drift rates of florpyrauxifen-benzyl and triclopyr as well as characterize and compare symptoms caused by these two herbicides. The fractional herbicide rates tested were 1/200X, 1/100X, 1/33X, and 1/10X of the florpyrauxifen-benzyl use rate of 29.4 g·ha21 a.i. and 1/200X, 1/100X, and 1/33X of the triclopyr use rate of 420.3 g·ha21 a.e. Florpyrauxifen-benzyl and triclopyr herbicides were applied directly to one side of the canopy of 1- to 2-year-old almond, pistachio, and walnut trees. The general symptoms of florpyrauxifen-benzyl and triclopyr were chlorosis, chlorotic spots, leaf curling, leaf narrowing, leaf distortion, leaf malformation, leaf crinkling, shoot curling, stem coloring, stunting, terminal bud death, and twisting. The florpyrauxifen-benzyl and triclopyr injury symptoms were compared at the same fractional rates and found to be similar to each other. The herbicide injury was observed on the entire pistachio canopy, particularly on developing leaves and terminal buds. In contrast, injury symptoms on almond and walnut were more apparent on the side of the canopy to which the herbicides were applied. Symptom severity peaked at 14 days after treatment with the 1/10X florpyrauxifen-benzyl rate, when the visible injury was 16%, 48%, and 78% on almond, walnut, and pistachio, respectively. Although almond and walnut symptoms from the 1/10X florpyrauxifen-benzyl rate remained visible longer than all other treatments, all trees gradually recovered throughout the growing season. In contrast, pistachio trees did not recover fully and had injury symptoms that persisted for the remainder of the treatment year and at leaf-out the following spring. When drift occurs, it is typically at rates below 1/100X up to 1/33X of herbicide use rates. This research suggested that proper herbicide drift management practices and application precautions are likely to minimize the risk of significant injury from florpyrauxifen-benzyl drift to almond and walnut because of low injury symptoms at the typical drift rates. However, extra precautions may be needed if there are nearby pistachio orchards.

Results of previous research on chemigated imazamox for control of branched broomrape (Phelipanche ramosa) in processing tomatoes suggested potential soil-type differences in imazamox availability. Over two years, there were differences in crop-injury between two sites less than 30-km apart: imazamox-treated tomatoes in the Davis location had relatively minor early season injury while tomatoes at the Woodland location were severely injured or killed. The following study was conducted to investigate imazamox sorption in four California soils to determine if differences in herbicide adsorption played a role in variable crop-injury observed in the field trials. To determine the sorption capacity of imazamox of each soil, a batch-equilibrium study was conducted. There were significant differences in sorbed imazamox: the clay soil had the highest adsorption (Robert's Island: 742.5 pg µL-1 sorbed), followed by the sandy loam soil (Ripon: 723.9 pg µL-1 sorbed), while the loam soils from both trial sites (Davis: 704.2 pg µL-1 sorbed; Woodland: 699.9 pg µL-1 sorbed) had the lowest adsorption and were not significantly different from one another. Results from this study illustrate only minor differences in imazamox adsorption among the soils tested which suggests that soil type was likely not a major factor contributing to differences in crop-injury.

Although charter schools are frequently afforded flexibility from many state laws that govern traditional public schools, a growing number of charter school teachers have now unionized and introduced collective bargaining to the charter sector. Using data from a detailed content analysis of teacher CBAs from California, we compare the restrictiveness of CBAs in 75 unionized charter bargaining units to the restrictiveness of CBAs in 31 nearest neighbor traditional public school district bargaining units. We find that independent charter CBAs are much more flexible than the CBAs of traditional public school districts, but charter school CBAs of bargaining units combined with traditional public school districts are comparably restrictive.

Indirect Drive Inertial Confinement Fusion Experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have achieved a burning plasma state with neutron yields exceeding 170 kJ, roughly 3 times the prior record and a necessary stage for igniting plasmas. The results are achieved despite multiple sources of degradations that lead to high variability in performance. Results shown here, for the first time, include an empirical correction factor for mode-2 asymmetry in the burning plasma regime in addition to previously determined corrections for radiative mix and mode-1. Analysis shows that including these three corrections alone accounts for the measured fusion performance variability in the two highest performing experimental campaigns on the NIF to within error. Here we quantify the performance sensitivity to mode-2 symmetry in the burning plasma regime and apply the results, in the form of an empirical correction to a 1D performance model. Furthermore, we find the sensitivity to mode-2 determined through a series of integrated 2D radiation hydrodynamic simulations to be consistent with the experimentally determined sensitivity only when including alpha-heating.

Abstract: Rice herbicide drift poses a significant challenge in California, where rice fields are near almond, pistachio, and walnut orchards. This research was conducted as part of a stewardship program for a newly registered rice herbicide and specifically aimed to compare the onset of foliar symptoms resulting from simulated florpyrauxifen-benzyl drift with residues in almond, pistachio, and walnut leaves at several time points after exposure. Treatments were applied to one side of the canopy of 1- and 2-yr-old trees at 1/100X and 1/33X of the florpyrauxifen-benzyl rice field use rate of 29.4 g ai ha–1 in 2020 and 2021. Symptoms were observed 3 d after treatment (DAT) for pistachio and 7 DAT for almond and walnut, with peak severity at approximately 14 DAT. While almond and walnut symptoms gradually dissipated throughout the growing season, pistachio still had symptoms at leaf out in the following spring. Leaf samples were randomly collected from each tree for residue analysis at 7, 14, and 28 DAT. At 7 DAT with the 1/33X rate, almond, pistachio, and walnut leaves had florpyrauxifen-benzyl at 6.06, 5.95, and 13.12 ng g–1 fresh weight (FW) leaf, respectively. By 28 DAT, all samples from all crops treated with the 1/33X drift rate had florpyrauxifen-benzyl at less than 0.25 ng g–1 FW leaf. At the 1/100X rate, pistachio, almond, and walnut residues were 1.78, 2.31, and 3.58 ng g–1 FW leaf at 7 DAT, respectively. At 28 DAT with the 1/100X rate, pistachio and almond samples had florpyrauxifen-benzyl at 0.1 and 0.04 ng g–1 FW leaf, respectively, but walnut leaves did not have detectable residues. Together, these data suggest that residue analysis from leaf samples collected after severe symptoms may substantially underestimate actual exposure due to the relatively rapid dissipation of florpyrauxifen-benzyl in nut tree foliage.

Abstract Estuaries are a globally important source of methane, but little is known about Australia’s contributions to global estuarine methane emissions. Here we present a first-order Australia-wide assessment of estuarine methane emissions, using methane concentrations from 47 estuaries scaled to 971 Australian estuaries based on geomorphic estuary types and disturbance classes. We estimate total mean (±standard error) estuary annual methane emissions for Australia of 30.56 ± 12.43 Gg CH4 yr−1. Estuarine geomorphology and disturbance interacted to control annual methane emissions through differences in water–air methane flux rates and surface area. Most of Australia’s estuarine surface area (89.8%) has water–air methane fluxes lower than global means, contributing 80.3% of Australia’s total mean annual estuarine methane emissions. Australia is a good analogue for the ~34% of global coastal regions classified as less than moderately disturbed (>40% intact), suggesting that these regions may also have lower methane fluxes. On this basis, recent global estuarine methane emission estimates that do not consider disturbance in their upscaling, probably overestimate global estuarine methane emissions.

This study examines school leaders' implementation of collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) negotiated between teachers' unions and school district administration. Using interviews with school leaders and drawing on a structure-agency perspective, the research highlights the interplay between school leader decision-making, union power, and school social dynamics in CBA implementation. The findings demonstrate that school leaders employed diverse strategies to manage collective bargaining work rules that varied based on school leaders' tenure. Experienced leaders defrayed CBA disputes, while less experienced leaders deferred to teachers' interpretations. Our findings further illustrate how leaders leveraged CBA provisions in ways that privileged efficient school functioning.

Drawing on Bachrach and Baratz's first and second faces of interest group power, we explore the relationship between teachers' union power and reopening decisions during the fall 2020 semester in 250 large districts around the United States. We leverage a self-collected panel data set of reopening decisions coupled with measures of teachers' union first face power (drawn from social media postings on teachers' unions' Facebook pages) and second face power (operationalized as district size, whether the school district negotiates a collective bargaining agreement with the teachers' union, the length of the collective bargaining agreement, and the amount of revenue raised by the union). We found that school districts where teachers' unions exhibit strong second face power (but not first face power) were less likely to start the school year with in-person instruction, were less likely to ever open during fall semester with in-person instruction and spent fewer weeks in in-person learning.

Abstract Estuaries play an important role in connecting the global carbon cycle across the land-to-ocean continuum, but little is known about Australia’s contribution to global CO2 emissions. Here we present an Australia-wide assessment, based on CO2 concentrations for 47 estuaries upscaled to 971 assessed Australian estuaries. We estimate total mean (±SE) estuary CO2 emissions of 8.67 ± 0.54 Tg CO2-C yr−1, with tidal systems, lagoons, and small deltas contributing 94.4%, 3.1%, and 2.5%, respectively. Although higher disturbance increased water-air CO2 fluxes, its effect on total Australian estuarine CO2 emissions was small due to the large surface areas of low and moderately disturbed tidal systems. Mean water-air CO2 fluxes from Australian small deltas and tidal systems were higher than from global estuaries because of the dominance of macrotidal subtropical and tropical systems in Australia, which have higher emissions due to lateral inputs. We suggest that global estuarine CO2 emissions should be upscaled based on geomorphology, but should also consider land-use disturbance, and climate.

This study examined the effectiveness of written corrective and the role of individual differences (ID) in the uptake of the feedback. Data was taken from a nine-week, English as a foreign language (EFL) writing course from 101 intermediate (n=101) students at a private university in Kobe, Japan. Using an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, quantitative data was first collected concerning writing errors, followed by qualitative semi-structured interviews. Three classes were placed into either two treatment groups (direct and indirect) or a control group, and completed four writing tasks (pre-test, post-test and two delayed post-tests). The study found the two treatment groups showed significant improvements on local and global errors, whereas the control group did not. Additionally, the qualitative component elicited the influence of affective factors. The study adds to the body of literature addressing the impact of written corrective feedback, specifically on students' self-editing strategies.

BackgroundPelvic fracture urethral injury (PFUI) occurs in up to 10% of pelvic fractures. There is mixed evidence supporting early endoscopic urethral realignment (EUR) over suprapubic tube (SPT) placement and delayed urethroplasty. Some studies show decreased urethral obstruction with EUR, while others show few differences. We hypothesized that EUR would reduce the rate of urethral obstruction after PFUI.MethodsTwenty-six US medical centers contributed patients following either an EUR or SPT protocol from 2015 to 2020. If retrograde cystoscopic catheter placement failed, patients were included and underwent either EUR or SPT placement based on their institution's assigned treatment arm. Endoscopic urethral realignment involved simultaneous antegrade/retrograde cystoscopy to place a catheter across the urethral injury. The primary endpoint was development of urethral obstruction. Fisher's exact test was used to analyze the relationship between PFUI management and development of urethral obstruction.ResultsThere were 106 patients with PFUI; 69 (65%) had complete urethral disruption and failure of catheter placement with retrograde cystoscopy. Of the 69 patients, there were 37 (54%) and 32 (46%) in the EUR and SPT arms, respectively. Mean age was 37.0 years (SD, 16.3 years) years, and mean follow-up was 463 days (SD, 280 days) from injury. In the EUR arm, 36 patients (97%) developed urethral obstruction compared with 30 patients (94%) in the SPT arm ( p = 0.471). Urethroplasty was performed in 31 (87%) and 29 patients (91%) in the EUR and SPT arms, respectively ( p = 0.784).ConclusionIn this prospective multi-institutional study of PFUI, EUR was not associated with a lower rate of urethral obstruction or need for urethroplasty when compared with SPT placement. Given the potential risk of EUR worsening injuries, clinicians should consider SPT placement as initial treatment for PFUI when simple retrograde cystoscopy is not successful in placement of a urethral catheter.Level of evidenceTherapeutic/Care Management; Level III.

ObjectivesWe present an adolescent in whom olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) was detected on follow-up magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) 2.5 years after SIADH diagnosis. Our case contrasts prior pediatric reports in which ONB and SIADH were diagnosed concurrently.Case presentationA previously healthy 13-year-old girl was found to have SIADH during evaluation for restrictive eating. Work-up ruled out adrenal, thyroid and paraneoplastic causes, diuretic use, and vasopressin receptor and aquaporin channel mutations. Brain MRI was normal except for paranasal sinus (PNS) inflammatory changes to the left fronto-maxillary sinuses and frontoethmoidal recess. The sodium levels normalized with fluid restriction (800-900 ml/m2/day). Multiple repeated attempts to liberalize fluid intake resulted in recurrent hyponatremia. Follow-up brain MRIs 4 and 11 months after the initial presentation showed persistent PNS inflammatory changes. A subsequent brain MRI 31 months after initial presentation demonstrated a lesion in the left frontoethmoidal recess extending into the left nasal cavity and biopsy showed low grade ONB. The patient underwent surgery with normalization of serum sodium on liberalized fluid intake. Seven days after surgery, she had recurrence of SIADH, and brain MRI showed remnant of the ONB at the fovea ethmoidalis. She completed adjuvant radiotherapy though her SIADH persisted.ConclusionsOur case highlights the importance of considering ONB in the evaluation of children with SIADH. Idiopathic SIADH is rare in children and if no cause is identified, computed tomography of sinuses and nasal endoscopy should be considered earlier in the work-up of these patients, particularly in the absence of sinus symptoms.

Pyroxasulfone is a very long chain fatty acid (VLCFA) inhibitor (group 15) with potential for preemergence weed control in orchard crops and would be beneficial for reducing selection pressure for resistance to more commonly used herbicides, such as glyphosate. Pyroxasulfone is registered and widely used in corn and soybeans in the United States as a solo product and in several premix formulations. However, there is limited published information on the performance and safety of pyroxasulfone in tree nut orchard systems. To assess the potential fit for pyroxasulfone in this crop sector, a series of crop safety and weed control efficacy experiments were carried out in key California orchard crops and in fallow fields with common orchard weeds. The non-crop studies were conducted near Davis, CA, to evaluate winter annual weed control with pyroxasulfone in comparison with pendimethalin and indaziflam. In addition, an irrigation incorporation experiment was conducted in summer to evaluate the effects of incorporation timing on pyroxasulfone, pendimethalin, and indaziflam efficacy as a measure of relative stability. Orchard weed control experiments were conducted in spring in an almond orchard near Arbuckle, CA, and a walnut orchard near Davis, CA. The orchard experiments included pyroxasulfone, pendimethalin, and indaziflam in various rate combinations with glufosinate. To evaluate crop safety, 2-year experiments were conducted to evaluate repeated applications of above-label rates of pyroxasulfone at 1199 g·ha−1 and S-metolachlor at 14,010 g·ha−1 on 1- to 2-year-old almond, pistachio, and walnut trees near Davis. Pyroxasulfone performed similarly to commercial standards with up to 95% control of broadleaf and grass weeds with pyroxasulfone and indaziflam providing 96% to 100% control of annual bluegrass, and pyroxasulfone (293 g·ha−1) being the only herbicide to suppress (>70%) common lambsquarters at 60 days after treatment (DAT). Other weeds controlled by pyroxasulfone include swinecress, redroot pigweed, yellow nutsedge, and Italian ryegrass. No differences were found among treatments in the incorporation timing study indicating adequate stability on the soil surface under summer conditions. Crop injury was not observed in the established orchards or the young orchard studies and there were no treatment effects on tree trunk diameter of almond, pistachio, and walnut in the 2-year crop safety experiments. These results indicate a potential for pyroxasulfone in California tree nut orchard systems that would be an additional site of action and beneficial for management of herbicide-resistant weeds in these crops.

People who are impacted by the criminal justice system ("system-impacted") face barriers when seeking financial aid to pay for college. Between the late 1960s and the early 2000s, Congress created laws that prohibited incarcerated students and students with certain criminal convictions from receiving federal grants and loans. This paper offers a comprehensive review of the history of those laws, which provides context for current debates on restoring Pell Grants to students in prison. Legislative documents, scholarly sources, and news reports were studied to build this historical review. Key lessons from history are discussed as to how Congress might treat system-impacted students in the near future.

ObjectiveTo determine patient outcomes across a range of pelvic fracture urethral injury (PFUI) severity. PFUI is a devastating consequence of a pelvic fracture. No study has stratified PFUI outcomes based on severity of the urethral distraction injury.MethodsAdult male patients with blunt-trauma-related PFUI were followed prospectively for a minimum of six months at 27 US medical centers from 2015-2020. Patients underwent retrograde cystourethroscopy and retrograde urethrography to determine injury severity and were categorized into three groups: (1) major urethral distraction, (2) minor urethral distraction, and (3) partial urethral injury. Major distraction vs minor distraction was determined by the ability to pass a cystoscope retrograde into the bladder. Simple statistics summarized differences between groups. Multi-variable analyses determined odds ratios for obstruction and urethroplasty controlling for urethral injury type, age, and Injury Severity Score.ResultsThere were 99 patients included, 72(72%) patients had major, 13(13%) had minor, and 14(14%) had partial urethral injuries. The rate of urethral obstruction differed in patients with major (95.8%), minor (84.6%), and partial injuries (50%) (P < 0.001). Urethroplasty was performed in 90% of major, 66.7% of minor, and 35.7% of partial injuries (P < 0.001).ConclusionIn PFUI, a spectrum of severity exists that influences outcomes. While major and minor distraction injuries are associated with a higher risk of developing urethral obstruction and need for urethroplasty, up to 50% of partial PFUI will result in obstruction, and as such need to be closely followed.

Abstract Wind wave observations in shallow coastal waters are essential for calibrating, validating, and improving numerical wave models to predict sediment transport, shoreline change, and coastal hazards such as beach erosion and oceanic inundation. Although ocean buoys and satellites provide near-global coverage of deep-water wave conditions, shallow-water wave observations remain sparse and often inaccessible. Nearshore wave conditions may vary considerably alongshore due to coastline orientation and shape, bathymetry and islands. We present a growing dataset of in-situ wave buoy observations from shallow waters (
