Abstract

We present 0."5 resolution ALMA detections of the observed 246GHz continuum, [CI]^3P_2-^3P_1 fine structure line ([CI]2-1), CO(7-6) and H2O lines in the z=2.161 radio galaxy MRC1138-262, the 'Spiderweb Galaxy'. We detect strong [CI]2-1 emission both at the position of the radio core, and in a second component ~4kpc away from it. The 1100km/s broad [CI]2-1 line in this latter component, combined with its H2 mass of 1.6x10^10Msun implies this emission must come from a compact region <60pc, possibly containing a second AGN. The combined H2 mass derived for both objects using the [CI]2-1 emission is 3.3x10^10Msun. The total CO(7-6)/[CI]2-1 line flux ratio of 0.2 suggests a low excitation molecular gas reservoir and/or enhanced atomic carbon in cosmic-ray dominated regions. We detect spatially-resolved H2O 2_{11}-2_{02} emission - for the first time in a high-z un-lensed galaxy - near the outer radio lobe to the east, and near the bend of the radio jet to the west of the radio galaxy. No underlying 246GHz continuum emission is seen at either position. We suggest that the H2O emission is excited in the cooling region behind slow (10-40km/s) shocks in dense molecular gas (10^{3-5} cm^-3). The extended water emission is likely evidence of the radio jet's impact in cooling and forming molecules in the post-shocked gas in the halo and inter-cluster gas similar to what is seen in low-z clusters and other high-z radio galaxies. These observations imply that the passage of the radio jet in the interstellar and inter-cluster medium not only heats gas to high temperatures as is commonly assumed or found in simulations, but also induces cooling and dissipation which can lead to substantial amounts of cold dense molecular gas. The formation of molecules and strong dissipation in the halo gas of MRC1138-262 may explain both the extended diffuse molecular gas and young stars observed around MRC1138-262., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

The overall performance of the tested computer-aided diagnosis (CADx) system was similar to that of the Prostate Imaging Reporting and Data System version 2 score assigned prospectively at the time of biopsy. The CADx predefined diagnostic thresholds, which provided 90% sensitivity in the training dataset, yielded sensitivity of 86% (95% confidence interval: 76–94) and specificity of 64% (95% confidence interval: 55–74) in the test dataset. The CADx score could help stratify the risk of clinically significant prostate cancer in patients with positive magnetic resonance imaging and negative prostate-specific antigen density.

Abstract

In densely populated urban areas, the pressure on water resources is considerable and will tend to intensify over the next decades. Preserving water resources therefore seems fundamental, but many questions remain as to the transfer of contaminants to subsurface waters in these largely sealed areas. Because of their toxicity and persistence in the environment, this work focused on the study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ubiquitous pollutants mainly produced by human activities. To better understand the main factors leading to the retention or transport of these pollutants in urban environments, vertical transects, from the surface to several meters down, were established on three study sites in or near Paris (France), selected according to an urbanization gradient. Soil samples collected at the surface and urban secondary carbonate deposits (USCD), similar to cave speleothems, sampled underground in quarries and aqueducts were analyzed. As the hydrophobic properties of PAHs favor their sorption onto organic matter, the latter was also studied using organic carbon analysis and UV fluorescence spectroscopy. The USCD located closest to the urbanized surface contained high concentrations of PAHs (76.8 ± 5.3 ng g−1), while the USCD located at greater depth with organic soil on the surface contained the lowest amount of PAHs (2.9 ± 0.4 ng g−1), and no PAHs with log K OC > 5. The results highlight the predominant role played by the presence of organic topsoil at the surface in retaining and storing large amounts of PAHs (1914–2595 ng. g soil −1), particularly the most hydrophobic ones (i.e. 60% of the 15 PAHs are characterized by a Log K OC >5), which are also the most toxic. The lithology and thickness of the bedrock (between the surface and the USCD) also play an important role in the retention of PAHs, particularly those adsorbed on the particulate phase. Abstract

ABSTRACTIn urban environments, diachronic evolution of water quality can be reconstructed using geochemical analysis of urban secondary carbonate deposits (USCDs), from urban underground structures, similar to speleothems from natural caves. The use of the radiocarbon bomb peak to build their precise chronology was recently tested in two Paris-area urban sites (France). In this study, new samples from contrasted environments in the Paris region were sampled in order to test the sites’ effects on the radiocarbon signal recorded: under wood, under a fountain, in underground aqueducts, in the south and north of Paris. We compared the post-bomb atmospheric radiocarbon record with the one measured at the top of USCDs, and estimated the dead carbon proportion (DCP), between 0 and 40%. USCDs fed by water with a rapid transfer through thin soil (Versailles fountain) had the lowest DCP (14C very close to atmospheric one). Highest DCP were found for USCD from deep underground quarry under urban wood, and intermediate ones for USCDs fed by the waters of perched aquifers. These data support the use of radiocarbon as chronometer for USCDs in contrasted urban contexts, and show that it can be used to determine carbon transport and sources, an important parameter for pollution reconstruction.

38. Vertical Deformation Along a Strike‐Slip Plate Boundary: The Uplifted Marine Terraces of the Gulf of Aqaba and Tiran Island, at the Southern End of the Dead Sea Fault

Abstract

Close to its southern end where it connects to the Red Sea rift, the Dead Sea strike‐slip fault (DSF) becomes trans‐tensional in the Gulf of Aqaba. Details of this transition, however, remain difficult to unravel as most of the active tectonic structures are located off‐shore. This study focuses on uplifted marine terraces located in the Gulf of Aqaba and on Tiran Island. Using high‐resolution tri‐stereo Pleiades satellite imagery, we build a Digital Surface Model (DSM) at a 0.5‐m resolution of the eastern coast of the gulf and Tiran Island to map 19 levels of marine terraces. The terraces are preserved at elevations from 1 m to almost 500 m above the current sea level. Correlating laterally U‐Th ages obtained along the gulf with the lower levels found on Tiran Island, we build an age model to estimate the ages of the upper terraces on the island. Combining this with the terrace heights from our DSM, we derive the uplift rate affecting the terraces. The geographic extent of the terraces along the gulf suggests that the DSF is responsible for uplift along the entire eastern coastline of the gulf at a rate of about 0.14 ± 0.03 mm/year at least over the Quaternary. The uplift rate of Tiran Island, located closer to the Red Sea rift, is faster at 0.21 ± 0.02 mm/year over the past 2.4 Myr. This faster uplift rate suggests a combined tectonic uplift related to both the Dead Sea strike‐slip fault system and the Red Sea rift. Abstract

Colloque avec actes et comité de lecture. internationale.; International audience; Le projet ADEPTE (Aide au Dimensionnement pour la gestion des Eaux Pluviales par Traitement Extensif) a pour objectif de développer un outil d’aide à la conception de la technique des filtres plantés de roseaux pour le traitement des Rejets Urbains par Temps de Pluie (RUTP). Pour cela, quatre systèmes (3 filtres verticaux, 1 horizontal) situés en milieu urbain ou péri-urbain, mais avec des occupations du sol différentes, sont évalués d’un point de vue technique et environnemental. Ces ouvrages sont situés dans des contextes hydroclimatiques différents (du climat océanique au climat semi-continental) et répondent à des enjeux locaux différents (zone de captage, zone littorale, protection de cours d’eau, surverse de réseau unitaire). L’outil final est construit autour d’un modèle simplifié du fonctionnement des filtres qui nécessite un jeu de données pour sa validation et son test. L’objectif de la présente communication est ainsi de présenter la méthodologie d’acquisition des jeux de données physico-chimiques et hydrauliques pour les 4 sites et de présenter les résultats acquis à ce jour sur 2 des 4 sites. La première phase du projet focalisée sur la méthodologie de suivi des sites a illustré la difficulté de parvenir à une instrumentation identique et la nécessité de comprendre le fonctionnement hydraulique avant de définir un programme d’échantillonnage.Le suivi permet de mettre en évidence l’existence de différents processus qui s’expriment différemment en fonction de la nature des eaux : réseau unitaire caractérisés par des effluents organiques et une charge en azote réduit, réseau séparatif caractérisé par une charge minérale et moins de composés organiques et azotés. De manière générale on observe une minéralisation de la matière organique, une oxydation des formes réduites de l’azote, une bonne rétention de la fraction particulaire et des polluants qui lui sont associés. Les sollicitations hydrauliques peuvent être très importantes à la surface des filtres avec des périodes de mise en charge de la surface des filtres.

Colloque avec actes et comité de lecture. internationale.; International audience; Stormwater constructed wetlands (SCW) in Strasbourg (Alsace, France), Moulin-lès-Metz (Lorraine, France), and Leuville-sur-Orge (Ile-de-France, France) receive and treat exclusively runoffs from urban catchments but with different soil uses. Made up of sedimentation ponds and a vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland, the treatment facilities lead to trap several trace metal pollution. Each site belongs to different hydroclimatic areas (modified oceanic, modified continental and semi-continental) and was designed for different purposes (watercourse protection in Strasbourg and in Leuville-sur-Orge, protection of drinking water wells in Moulins-lès-Metz). The aim of this study is to explore trace metals (Cd, Cu, Pb and Zn) behaviours in these SCW. We investigated trace metal trapping by determining concentrations in the systems compartments (filters media and plants). Then trace metal speciation was determined through sequencial extractions of the sediment and filter media. This allowed to determine their forms in soils and to anticipate their behaviour during physical and chemical condition changes. This study permits to obtain first results for the metals stability, to highlight a decrease of the concentrations through the SCW depth (from surficial sediment to clean filter media) and to observe a negligible metal trap in plants (mainly in roots).
