1. Young Stellar Objects in NGC 346: A JWST NIRCam/MIRI Imaging Survey

Abstract: We present a JWST imaging survey with NIRCam and MIRI of NGC 346, the brightest star-forming region in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). By combining aperture and point spread function (PSF) photometry of eleven wavelength bands across these two instruments, we have detected more than 200,000 unique sources. Using near-infrared (IR) color analysis, we observe various evolved and young populations, including 196 young stellar objects (YSOs) and pre-main sequence stars suitable for forthcoming spectroscopic studies. We expand upon this work, creating mid-IR color-magnitude diagrams and determining color cuts to identify 833 reddened sources which are YSO candidates. We observe that these candidate sources are spatially associated with regions of dusty, filamentary nebulosity. Furthermore, we fit model YSO spectral energy distributions (SEDs) to a selection of sources with detections across all of our MIRI bands. We classify with a high degree of confidence 23 YSOs in this sample and estimate their radii, bolometric temperatures, luminosities, and masses. We detect YSOs approaching 1 solar mass, the lowest-mass extragalactic YSOs confirmed to date.

Abstract: Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies, expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least $4m$. With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000 people realized that vision as the $6.5m$ James Webb Space Telescope. A generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000 team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image quality than expected. Abstract: The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on board the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) uses three Si:As impurity band conduction (IBC) detector arrays. The output voltage level of each MIRI detector pixel is digitally recorded by sampling-up-the-ramp. For uniform or low-contrast illumination, the pixel ramps become non-linear in a predictable way, but in areas of high contrast, the non-linearity curve becomes much more complex. The origin of the effect is poorly understood and currently not calibrated. We provide observational evidence of the Brighter-Fatter Effect (BFE) in MIRI conventional and high-contrast coronographic imaging, low-resolution spectroscopy, and medium-resolution spectroscopy data and investigate the physical mechanism that gives rise to the effect on the MIRI detector pixel raw voltage integration ramps. We use public data from the JWST MIRI commissioning and Cycle 1 phase. We also develop a numerical electrostatic model of the MIRI detectors using a modified version of the public Poisson_CCD code. We find that the physical mechanism behind the BFE manifesting in MIRI data is fundamentally different to that of CCDs and photodiode arrays such as the Hawaii-XRG (HXRG) near-infrared detectors used by the NIRISS, NIRCam, and NIRSpec instruments on board JWST. Observationally, the BFE makes the JWST MIRI data yield 10-25 % larger point sources and spectral line profiles as a function of the relative level of debiasing of neighboring detector pixels. This broadening impacts the MIRI absolute flux calibration, time-series observations of faint companions, and PSF modeling and subtraction. We also find that the intra-pixel 2D profile of the shrinking Si:As IBC detector depletion region directly impacts the accuracy of the pixel ramp non-linearity calibration model., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

4. Quantifying the contamination from nebular emission in NIRSpec spectra of massive star forming regions

Abstract: The Near InfraRed Spectrograph (NIRSpec) on the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) includes a novel micro shutter array (MSA) to perform multi object spectroscopy. While the MSA is mainly targeting galaxies across a larger field, it can also be used for studying star formation in crowded fields. Crowded star formation regions typically feature strong nebular emission, both in emission lines and continuum. In this work, nebular emission is referred to as nebular contamination. Nebular contamination can obscure the light from the stars, making it more challenging to obtain high quality spectra. The amount of the nebular contamination mainly depends on the brightness distribution of the observed `scene'. Here we focus on 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which is part of the NIRSpec GTO program. Using spectrophotometry of 30 Doradus from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and the Very Large Telescope (VLT)/SINFONI, we have created a 3D model of the nebular emission of 30 Doradus. Feeding the NIRSpec Instrument Performance Simulator (IPS) with this model allows us to quantify the impact of nebular emission on target stellar spectra as a function of various parameters, such as configuration of the MSA, angle on the sky, filter band, etc. The results from these simulations show that the subtraction of nebular contamination from the emission lines of pre-main sequence stars produces a typical error of $0.8\%$, with a $1\sigma$ spread of $13\%$. The results from our simulations will eventually be compared to data obtained in space, and will be important to optimize future NIRSpec observations of massive star forming regions. The results will also be useful to apply the best calibration strategy and to quantify calibration uncertainties due to nebular contamination.

Abstract: METIS will be among the first generation of scientific instruments on the E-ELT. Focusing on highest angular resolution and high spectral resolution, METIS will provide diffraction limited imaging and coronagraphy from 3-14um over an 20"x20" field of view, as well as integral field spectroscopy at R ~ 100,000 from 2.9-5.3um. In addition, METIS provides medium-resolution (R ~ 5000) long slit spectroscopy, and polarimetric measurements at N band. While the baseline concept has already been discussed, this paper focuses on the significant developments over the past two years in several areas: The science case has been updated to account for recent progress in the main science areas circum-stellar disks and the formation of planets, exoplanet detection and characterization, Solar system formation, massive stars and clusters, and star formation in external galaxies. We discuss the developments in the adaptive optics (AO) concept for METIS, the telescope interface, and the instrument modelling. Last but not least, we provide an overview of our technology development programs, which ranges from coronagraphic masks, immersed gratings, and cryogenic beam chopper to novel approaches to mirror polishing, background calibration and cryo-cooling. Abstract: We present an atlas of 129 spectral energy distributions for nearby galaxies, with wavelength coverage spanning from the UV to the mid-infrared. Our atlas spans a broad range of galaxy types, including ellipticals, spirals, merging galaxies, blue compact dwarfs and luminous infrared galaxies. We have combined ground-based optical drift-scan spectrophotometry with infrared spectroscopy from Spitzer and Akari, with gaps in spectral coverage being filled using MAGPHYS spectral energy distribution models. The spectroscopy and models were normalized, constrained and verified with matched-aperture photometry measured from Swift, GALEX, SDSS, 2MASS, Spitzer and WISE images. The availability of 26 photometric bands allowed us to identify and mitigate systematic errors present in the data. Comparison of our spectral energy distributions with other template libraries and the observed colors of galaxies indicates that we have smaller systematic errors than existing atlases, while spanning a broader range of galaxy types. Abstract: We use the near--infrared Br\gamma hydrogen recombination line as a reference star formation rate (SFR) indicator to test the validity and establish the calibration of the {\it Herschel} PACS 70 \mu m emission as a SFR tracer for sub--galactic regions in external galaxies. Br\gamma offers the double advantage of directly tracing ionizing photons and of being relatively insensitive to the effects of dust attenuation. For our first experiment, we use archival CFHT Br\gamma and Ks images of two nearby galaxies: NGC\,5055 and NGC\,6946, which are also part of the {\it Herschel} program KINGFISH (Key Insights on Nearby Galaxies: a Far-Infrared Survey with Herschel). We use the extinction corrected Br\gamma emission to derive the SFR(70) calibration for H{\sc ii} regions in these two galaxies. A comparison of the SFR(70) calibrations at different spatial scales, from 200 pc to the size of the whole galaxy, reveals that about 50% of the total 70\mu m emission is due to dust heated by stellar populations that are unrelated to the current star formation. We use a simple model to qualitatively relate the increase of the SFR(70) calibration coefficient with decreasing region size to the star formation timescale. We provide a calibration for an unbiased SFR indicator that combines the observed H\alpha with the 70 \mu m emission, also for use in H{\sc ii} regions. We briefly analyze the PACS 100 and 160 \mu m maps and find that longer wavelengths are not as good SFR indicators as 70\mu m, in agreement with previous results. One of the novel concepts of METIS is that of a high-resolution integral field spectrograph (IFS) for a diffraction-limited mid-IR instrument. While this concept has many scientific and operational advantages over a long-slit spectrograph, one drawback is that the spectral resolution changes over the field of view. This has an impact on the procedures to correct for telluric absorption lines imprinted on the science spectra. They are a major obstacle in the quest to maximize spectral fidelity, the ability to distinguish a weak spectral feature from the continuum. The classical technique of division by a standard star spectrum, observed in a single IFS spaxel, cannot simply be applied to all spaxels, because the spectral resolution changes from spaxel to spaxel. Abstract: METIS, the Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph (formerly called MIDIR), is a proposed instrument for the European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT), currently undergoing a phase-A study. The study is carried out within the framework of the ESO-sponsored E-ELT instrumentation studies. METIS will be designed to cover the E-ELT science needs at wavelengths longward of 3um, where the thermal background requires different operating schemes. In this paper we discuss the main science drivers from which the instrument baseline has been derived. Specific emphasis has been given to observations that require very high spatial and spectral resolution, which can only be achieved with a ground-based ELT. We also discuss the challenging aspects of background suppression techniques, adaptive optics in the mid-IR, and telescope site considerations. The METIS instrument baseline includes imaging and spectroscopy at the atmospheric L, M, and N bands with a possible extension to Q band imaging. Abstract: In this letter we present ground-based subarcsecond mid-infrared imaging and spectroscopy of young super star clusters in the overlap region of the merging galaxies NGC4038/4039 (the Antennae) obtained with the VLT Imager and Spectrometer for mid-Infrared (VISIR). With its unprecedented spatial resolution VISIR begins to resolve the HII/PDR complexes around the star-forming regions for the first time. In the N-band spectra of two young star clusters unexpectedly low polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission is observed, compared to what is seen with the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO) and with the Spitzer Space Telescope. We conclude that a large fraction of the PAH emission cannot directly be associated with the super star clusters, but originate from an extended region of at least 215 pc radius around the clusters. Abstract: We present our early results of the mapping of the nucleus of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 and its immediate surroundings using the Infrared Spectrograph onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The map is centered on the nucleus of the galaxy and spans the inner 800 x 688 pc2. The spatial distribution of the \neiii line at 15.55 microns and the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons feature at 11.3 microns peaks at the center while the purely rotationnal transition of molecular hydrogen at 17.03 microns is strong over several slit positions. Abstract: The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) extends the reach of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) to 28.5 μm. It provides subarcsecond-resolution imaging, high sensitivity coronagraphy, and spectroscopy at resolutions of λ/Δλ ∼ 100-3500, with the high-resolution mode employing an integral field unit to provide spatial data cubes. The resulting broad suite of capabilities will enable huge advances in studies over this wavelength range. This overview describes the history of acquiring this capability for JWST. It discusses the basic attributes of the instrument optics, the detector arrays, and the cryocooler that keeps everything at approximately 7 K. It gives a short description of the data pipeline and of the instrument performance demonstrated during JWST commissioning. The bottom line is that the telescope and MIRI are both operating to the standards set by pre-launch predictions, and all of the MIRI capabilities are operating at, or even a bit better than, the level that had been expected. Abstract: Near-infrared, high-dispersion spectroscopy has been used to characterize the atmospheres of hot Jupiters in close-in orbits (10,11). Such observations use changes in the radial component of the orbital velocity of [...], The spin of a planet arises from the accretion of angular momentum during its formation (1-3), but the details of this process are still unclear. In the Solar System, the equatorial rotation velocities and, consequently, spin angular momenta of most of the planets increase with planetary mass (4); the exceptions to this trend are Mercury and Venus, which, since formation, have significantly spun down because of tidal interactions (5,6). Here we report near-infrared spectroscopic observations, at a resolving power of 100,000, of the young extrasolar gas giant planet β Pictoris b (refs 7,8). The absorption signal from carbon monoxide in the planet's thermal spectrum is found to be blue-shifted with respect to that from the parent star by approximately 15 kilometres per second, consistent with a circular orbit (9). The combined line profile exhibits a rotational broadening of about 25 kilometres per second, meaning that b Pictoris b spins significantly faster than any planet in the Solar System, in line with the extrapolation of the known trend in spin velocity with planet mass.

Abstract: The Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph (METIS) is one the first three scientific instruments on ESO's Extremely Large Telescope (ELT). At the time of anticipated first light in 2025, METIS will provide diffraction limited imaging, coronagraphy and medium resolution slit spectroscopy in the 3-19 micrometers range, as well as high resolution (R approximately equals to 100, 000) integral field spectroscopy from 2.9-5.3 micrometers. The unique combination of these observing capabilities with an angular resolution of 0.020 sec, and the sensitivity provided by a 40m aperture, make METIS a very powerful tool to study the infrared sky - from objects in our Solar system, the Galactic center, brown dwarfs, evolved stars, and massive stellar clusters to active galactic nuclei (AGN), local starbursts, transient events, and luminous infrared galaxies at intermediate redshifts. Its main scientific focus, however, will be on the study of proto-planetary disks and exoplanets. In this paper, we describe the instrument concept and performance. Abstract: The direct detection of low-mass planets in the habitable zone of nearby stars is an important science case for future E-ELT instruments such as the mid-infrared imager and spectrograph METIS, which features vortex phase masks and apodizing phase plates (APP) in its baseline design. In this work, we present end-to-end performance simulations, using Fourier propagation, of several METIS coronagraphic modes, including focal-plane vortex phase masks and pupil-plane apodizing phase plates, for the centrally obscured, segmented E-ELT pupil. The atmosphere and the AO contributions are taken into account. Hybrid coronagraphs combining the advantages of vortex phase masks and APPs are considered to improve the METIS coronagraphic performance.

49. An atlas of galaxy spectral energy distributions from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared

Abstract: We present an atlas of 129 spectral energy distributions for nearby galaxies, with wavelength coverage spanning from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared. Our atlas spans a broad range of galaxy types, including ellipticals, spirals, merging galaxies, blue compact dwarfs, and luminous infrared galaxies. We have combined ground-based optical drift-scan spectrophotometry with infrared spectroscopy from Spitzer and Akari with gaps in spectral coverage being filled using Multi-wavelength Analysis of Galaxy Physical Properties spectral energy distribution models. The spectroscopy and models were normalized, constrained, and verified with matched-aperture photometry measured from Swift, Galaxy Evolution Explorer, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Two Micron All Sky Survey, Spitzer, and Wide-field Infrared Space Explorer images. The availability of 26 photometric bands allowed us to identify and mitigate systematic errors present in the data. Comparison of our spectral energy distributions with other template libraries and the observed colors of galaxies indicates that we have smaller systematic errors than existing atlases, while spanning a broader range of galaxy types. Relative to the prior literature, our atlas will provide improved K-corrections, photometric redshifts, and star-formation rate calibrations.
