Biologischer Abbau von Hausmüll ist die Hauptursache für Deponie-Emissionen. In einem zweijährigen Labor-Experiment wurden unterschiedliche Deponiebelüftungsszenarien simuliert. Dabei wurde der biologische Abbau in unterschiedlichen Belüftungsvarianten untersucht. Es wurden insgesamt neun Deponiesimulationsreaktoren betrieben. Zur Untersuchung der funktionellen Diversität wurden Biolog® Ecoplates herangezogen. Es war möglich, die funktionelle Diversität mit der biologischen Abbaubarkeit, gemessen als AT4 (Atmungsaktivität nach 4 Tagen) in Bezug zu setzen. Die unterschiedlichen Belüftungsvarianten zeigten geringe Unterschiede sowohl in der funktionellen Diversität als auch beim AT4. Indem das Integral der Gompertz Gleichung nach 96 h der interpolierten Messwerte berechnet wurde, konnten zwei funktionelle Gruppen identifiziert werden, die Einfluss auf die biologische Abbaubarkeit zeigten: Kohlenhydrate und Polymere. Die mikrobielle Aktivität der jeweiligen mikrobiellen Konsortien konnte über ein multilineares Modell in Bezug zur Abbaubarkeit gesetzt werden. *****Biological waste degradation is the main driving factor for landfill emissions. Die Wissenschaft der Künstlichen Intelligenz hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten beachtliche Fortschritte gemacht. Erheblich Schwächen jedoch zeigen sich noch dort, wo es darum geht komplexe Prozess auszuführen. Das Projekt Simulation of Mental Apparatus and Applications (SiMA) am Institute of Computer Technology (ICT) setzt genau dort an. In einem Top-Down-Ansatz, im Sinne der Systemmodellierung der Technik, wird hier ein ganzheitliches Modell des menschlichen Gehirns entwickelt. Ausgehend von einem psychoanalytischen Konzept wird unter Verwendung eines Schichtenmodells ein Agent entwickelt, der wie ein Mensch funktionieren soll. Auf diesem Wege wird erstmals erfolgreich das Modell des Gehirns auch in höheren Funktionen simuliert. Zur Verifikation wird eine Simulation in einem Multiagentenframework verwendet. Wenngleich dort viele Anwendungsfälle schon erfolgreich funktionieren, waren Funktionen, die auf Lokalisierung angewiesen sind, bisher noch nicht möglich. Ein autonomer Agent muss wissen, wo er sich gerade befindet, welche Objekte sich in der näheren Umgebung befinden und wo er bereits bekannte Objekte wiederfindet. In dieser Arbeit wird gezeigt, wie Location-Awareness und Navigation im Projekt SiMA möglich ist, lediglich unter Verwendung von Methoden, die auf das menschliche Vorbild zurückzuführen sind. Es sei angemerkt, dass es hierbei nicht um eine neue Entwicklung eines GPS-Navigationssytems geht. Von vornherein ist klar, dass es nicht um Performance oder Qualität der gefundenen Lösungen geht, sondern darum, im Sinn von Grundlagenforschung zu verstehen, wie der Mensch von A nach B kommt.Navigation und Selbstlokalisierung ist auch ohne Verwendung klassischer numerischer oder trigonometrischer Methoden möglich. Auch die Persistierung und Wiederauffindung von lokationsrelevanten Informationen ist in Form der existierenden neuropsychoanalytisch inspirierte Datenstrukturen möglich.Es werden dafür Landmarks, Locations und Regions verwendet. Aktionen bringen den Agenten von einer Location zu einer anderen. Locations sind hierarchisch in Regions gruppiert. Die überörtliche Routenplanung basiert nach menschlichem Vorbild auf einem hierarchischen, situationsabhängigen Bewertungsmodell für Streckenabschnitte.Die verwendeten Algorithmen sind vorerst nicht auf Performance optimiert. Considerable weaknesses, however, are still evident where complex processes need to be carried out. The project Simulation of Mental Apparatus and Applications (SiMA) at the Institute of Computer Technology (ICT) addresses preciselythis issue. In a top-down approach, in the sense of system modeling of technology, a holistic model of the human brain is developed. Starting from a psychoanalytical concept, an agent is developed using a layered model that is supposed to function like a human being. In this way, the model of the brain is successfully simulated for the first time, even in higher functions. A simulation in a multi-agent framework is used for verification. Although many use cases are already working successfully there, functions that depend on localization have not yet been possible. An autonomous agent needs to know where it is at the moment, which objects are located in the immediate vicinity, and where it can find already known objects. In this thesis, it is shown how location awareness and navigation is possible in the SiMA project, using only methods based on the human model. It should be noted that this is not a new development of a GPS navigation system. It is clear from the outset that it is not about performance or quality of the solutions found, but about understanding, in the sense of basic research, how humans get from A to B.Navigation and self-localization are also possible without using classical numerical or trigonometric methods. The persistence and retrieval of location-relevant information are also possible in the form of existing neuropsychoanalytically inspired data structures.Landmarks, locations, and regions are used for this purpose. Actions take the agent from one location to another. Locations are hierarchically grouped into regions. The supra-local route planning is based on a hierarchical, situation-dependent evaluation model for route sections, following the human example.The algorithms used are initially not optimized for performance. So far, the focus has been on demonstrating feasibility. Also, the recognition of landmarks is not considered more closely. Within the project Simulation of Mental Apparatus and Applications (SiMA), objects are already, possibly with errors, but in any case clearly recognized before localization deals with them.Based on the data model shown, neuropsychoanalytically inspired self-localizationand navigation is successfully implemented.

A reliable and practical method for characterizing refuse-derived fuels (RDF) with respect to greenhouse gas-relevance (or biomass content) is required by industries and waste management companies. As RDF usually consist of a variety of materials with different physical properties, sampling and sample preparation may represent crucial steps with regard to reliable analysis results. This is particularly valid for analytical methods, which rely on only small test specimens (centigrams), such as the adapted Balance Method (aBM). The aBM was recently developed by the authors and is based on elemental analyses (CHNSO). The investigations focus on elaborating an appropriate sample preparation for the aBM. The first ESRA (European Survey of Road users’ safety Attitudes) survey – a joint initiative of research organisations and road safety institutes in 20 European countries – was conducted online in 2015/2016 using representative samples of at least n=1,000 of the national adult populations in these countries. The survey aimed at collecting comparable data on road users’ opinions, attitudes and behaviour with respect to road traffic risks. This paper puts its focus on the main results of the 2015/2016 ESRA survey concerning subjective safety and risk perception in traffic. For both topics, general perception of road safety issues, the feeling of (un)safety regarding different transport modes, risk perception of causes for accidents, confrontation with risky behaviours of other road users and self-reported involvement in road crashes were analysed at an European level. The association between road fatalities and subjective concern as well as between (un)safe feeling in different transport modes and fatality rates was covered in a further analysis.

In this paper, the attitudes and behaviour of European pedestrians were analysed based on the results obtained from SARTRE4 face-to-face interviews carried out in 19 countries. First, a descriptive analysis was carried out, and several types of widespread risky behaviour were recognized, e.g. crossing at non-designated locations and during red signal display. Men crossed streets on a red light or at wrong places more often than women, and women and the elderly avoided dangerous streets or intersections more often than men or younger pedestrians.Further analyses revealed regional patterns of different attitudes, perceptions and behaviour in Northern, Eastern and Southern Europe, and statistical analysis was used to outline profiles of pedestrians in terms of motivations and travelling style. Based on the components describing the attitudes and behaviour of the respondents, the pedestrians can be grouped allocated to three groups: positive attitude + positive behaviour, negative attitudes + negative behaviour and mixed attitudes + positive behaviour. The majority of the pedestrians (almost 70%) had positive or neutral behaviour and attitudes, but 30% were expressing negative attitudes towards measures and interventions as well as towards existing pedestrian environment and safety.

Reducing our reliance on cars has many environmental and health benefits – traffic congestion should decrease, air quality should improve and people should be fitter and healthier. Also positive effects on road safety are to be expected, e.g. through a modal shift from passenger cars to public means of transport with lower accident risk. Research results are available in the field of travel behaviour and stimulation for modal shifts of motorized road users to other means of transport. In this chapter of SARTRE 4 report, Other Road Users (i.e. cyclists, pedestrians and users of public transport) are analysed in respect of the motivations and travelling styles. To know and to understand the motivations for travelling using these other methods of transportation is crucial for policy makers if they are to draft effective traffic policies that encourage a shift from car use to greater use of other means of transportation.

The SARTRE (Social Attitudes to Road Traffic Risk in Europe) project started in 1991. It consists of a European wide survey about knowledge of road traffic laws and road traffic risks, attitudes regarding road safety issues, reported road traffic behaviours, transport habits and needs in several European countries. Various topics related to road safety are in the focus of the project such as alcohol, drugs, or phone use while driving, speeding, use of advanced driver assistance systems and the transport infrastructure and environment.

This paper has its focus on the motivations and travelling styles of people who use mainly other means of transport than cars and motorcycles. The results present an overview on the variety of different reasons for walking, cycling or using public transport. The analysis is based on the data collected in face-to-face interviews in 19 European countries participating in SARTRE4 project. Further analyses were carried out based on socio-demographic variables and the context of living area. The younger the respondents, the more often they were motivated by financial and environmental reasons, whereas the older respondents were more often motivated by health and physical exercise. Men tended to choose financial reasons more often than women, whereas women were more often motivated by e.g. environmental reasons or fear of driving. Cluster analysis resulted in five types of road users that could be found in each country: 1. ‘public transport user’, 2. ‘pedestrian’, 3. ‘cyclist’, 4. ‘pedestrian + public transport user’ and 5. ‘active traveller’.

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable users of transport networks due to lack of protection and also due to particular characteristics and behaviour affecting the nature of their interaction with motorized traffic. The knowledge of pedestrian attitudes, perceptions and behaviour may thus assist policy makers in the better understanding of pedestrian behaviour issues and safety needs and eventually in the planning and implementation of measures to improve pedestrian safety. In the SARTRE 4 survey, the attitudes and behaviour of a large sample of pedestrians are examined at European level for the first time.The selection of pedestrians was carried out according to the following criteria: pedestrians were selected as those respondents who reported that their most frequent transport mode in the last 12 months was neither passenger car nor motorcycle and who reported non-zero daily walking distance travelled.

In temperaten Ökosystemen durchläuft ein großer Teil der Primärproduktion den Laubfall. Laubstreu liefert eine wichtige Nährstoffgrundlage für das Bodenleben und in weiterer Folge durch Abbauprozesse wieder für die Pflanzen. Die elementare chemische Zusammensetzung und die chemische Veränderung der Laubstreu während des Abbauprozesses spielen eine große Rolle in der Natur. Im Laufe des Abbaus werden leichter abbaubare Kohlenhydrate veratmet und schwer degradierbare hochpolymere Substanzen reichern sich an. Durch die Besiedelung von Mikroorganismen und deren aktiven Metabolismus werden dem restlichen Ökosystem viele wertvolle Nährstoffe für die Wieder-Aufnahme verfügbar gemacht. Dieser Prozess unterliegt vielen natürlichen Einflüssen, die durch die Verwendung eines Mikrokosomos-Systems verringert wurden. Die beiden großen Einflussfaktoren Temperatur und Feuchtigkeit wurden im vorliegenden Versuch nahezu konstant gehalten. Das Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, den Einfluss der unterschiedlichen Nährelementzusammensetzung der verwendeten Buchenlaubstreu (Fagus sylvatica L.) auf den Abbau zu untersuchen. Dafür wurden 60 Mikrokosmen konstruiert, in denen je 38 g Laubstreu über eine Periode von acht Wochen inkubiert wurden. Die Auswirkungen der Herkunft und der elementaren Zusammensetzung der Laubstreu auf die Nährstofffreisetzung wurden untersucht. Es wurden mikrobielle Biomasse nach Chloroform-Fumigation, Kohlendioxid, Methan, Lachgas, Ammonium und Nitrat in wöchentlichen Intervallen und Phospholipidfettsäuren (PLFS) zu drei Zeitpunkten gemessen. Der Fokus der vorliegenden Arbeit lag auf dem zeitlichen Ablauf des Abbaus, dem Einfluss der ursprünglichen Nährstoff-Stöchiometrie auf den Abbauprozess und mikrobiellen Interaktionen und Verschiebungen in der Gemeinschaft. Ein wichtiger Aspekt war die Akkumulation von Stickstoff in der mikrobiellen Biomasse. Es konnten einige der untersuchten Variablen miteinander in Beziehung gesetzt werden. Die Ammonium-Konzentration war mit der mikrobiellen Biomasse stark negativ korreliert, und die Respiration war schwach mit der Nitratkonzentration korreliert. Die mikrobielle Gemeinschaft veränderte sich von sog. r-Strategen (gram-) in Richtung K-Strategen (gram+ und Pilze). Es wurde außerdem ein Antagonismus zwischen Pilzen und Aktinomyceten gezeigt. Sehr deutlich war auch der Rückgang an Aktivität: so wurde bei den meisten Standorten zu Beginn am meisten geatmet, und im Verlauf der acht Wochen immer weniger. Diese Beobachtung lässt sich auf die sich ändernde chemische Zusammensetzung während des Laubabbaus zurückführen. Die Zunahme von mikrobieller Biomasse war zu Beginn am stärksten und veränderte sich im weiteren Verlauf des Versuchs nur marginal. Lachgas und Methan waren nur in sehr kleinen Konzentrationen vorhanden, was darauf hindeutet, dass das System durchwegs aerob war. Durch den Versuch wurde gezeigt, dass es einen Unterschied macht, ob in der Streu der Stickstoff als Ammonium oder Nitrat vorliegt. In unserem Fall hatten Standorte mit höherem Ammonium-Gehalt weniger Respiration. Auch der Einfluss anderer Nährelemente, wie Kalium oder möglicherweise sogar Mangan spielte eine Rolle. So hatten Standorte mit höherem Ammoniumgehalt zusätzlich wenig Kalium und Mangan. Die interessanteste Erktenntnis war, dass die weit verbreitete Meinung, dass die Gesamtstickstoffkonzentration der bestimmende Faktor für die Abbaugeschwindigkeit von Laubstreu ist, in unserem Versuch nicht bestätigt werden konnte., In this study the influence of initial elemental stoichiometry of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) litter on microbial decomposition was investigated. Litter from four different Austrian sites with different elemental stoichiometry was examined. A detailed perspective on early litter decomposition was provided: Sixty litter microcosms were sampled over eight weeks in total. Decomposition rates found in our laboratory experiment were in the range of literature values and consistent with in situ litter bag studies. In addition to decomposition in terms of CO2 respiration and litter mass loss the focus laid on microbial nitrogen uptake and microbial interactions. The results showed, that the chemical nature of mineral nitrogen was more important than initial total nitrogen concentrations. Sites with higher amounts of initial ammonium were less active than sites with more initial nitrate. Microbial community analysis (Phospholipid Fatty Acids) revealed contrasting behaviour of fungi and actinomycetes during litter decomposition. Additionally the potassium and possibly also the manganese content of the litter affected the decomposition dynamics. Microbial biomass increased and the inorganic nitrogen pools decreased in the very beginning of the experiment. Respiration was also highest in the beginning, indicating highest activity at the start of the experiment. Not only the amount but also the form of nitrogen release strongly influenced the decomposition process.
