Black hole imaging challenges the 3rd generation space VLBI, the Very Long Baseline Interferometry, to operate on a 500 GHz band. The coherent integration time needed here is 450 s though the available space oscillators cannot offer more than 10 s. Self-calibration methods might solve this issue in an interferometer formed by 3 antenna/satellite systems, but the need for the 3rd satellite increases mission costs. A frequency transfer is of special interest to alleviate both performance and cost issues. A concept of 2-way optical frequency transfer is examined to investigate its suitability to enable space-to-space interferometry, in particular, to image the 'shadows' of black holes from space. The concept, promising on paper, has been demonstrated by tests. The laboratory test set-up is presented and the verification of the temporal stability using standard analysis tool as TimePod has been passed. The resulting Allan Deviation is dominated by the 1/$\tau$ phase noise trend since the frequency transfer timescale of interest is shorter than 0.2 s. This trend continues into longer integration times, as proven by the longest tests spanning over a few hours. The Allan Deviation between derived 103.2 GHz oscillators is $1.1\times10^{-14}/\tau$ within 10 ms < $\tau$ < 1,000 s that degrades twice towards the longest delay 0.2 s. The worst case satisfies the requirement with a margin of 11 times. The obtained coherence in the range of 0.997-0.9998 is beneficial for space VLBI at 557 GHz. Metals and alloys fabricated by fusion-based additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, undergo complex dynamics of melting and solidification, presenting challenges to the effective control of grain structure. Herein, we report on the use of high-intensity ultrasound that controls the process of solidification during AM of 316L stainless steel. We find that the use of ultrasound favours the columnar-to-equiaxed transition, promoting the formation of fine equiaxed grains with random crystallographic texture. Moreover, the use of ultrasound increases the number density of grains from 305 mm-2 to 2748 mm-2 despite an associated decrease in cooling rate and temperature gradient in the melt pool during AM. Our assessment of the relationship between grain size and cooling rate indicates that the formation of crystallites during AM is enhanced by ultrasound. Furthermore, the use of ultrasound increases the amount of constitutional supercooling during solidification by lowering the temperature gradient in the bulk of the melt pool, thus creating an environment that favours nucleation, growth, and survival of grains. We investigated the structure-property relationship of Co$_2$MnSi Heusler thin films upon the irradiation with He$^+$ ions. The variation of the crystal structure with increasing ion fluence has been probed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and associated with the corresponding changes of the magnetic behavior. A decrease of both the structural order and the moment in saturation is observed. Specifically, we detect a direct transition from a highly $L2_1$-ordered to a fully $A2$-disordered structure type and quantify the evolution of the $A2$ structural contribution as a function of ion fluence. Complementary TEM analysis reveals a spatially-resolved distribution of the $L2_1$ and $A2$ phases showing that the $A2$ disorder starts at the upper part of the films. The structural degradation in turn leads to a decreasing magnetic moment in saturation in response to the increasing fluence., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

This work reports the measurement of electron $g$ factor anisotropy ($| \Delta g |$ = $| g_{001} - g_{1 \bar 1 0} |$) for phosphorous donor qubits in strained silicon (sSi = Si/Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$) environments. Multi-million-atom tight-binding simulations are performed to understand the measured decrease in $| \Delta g |$ as a function of $x$, which is attributed to a reduction in the interface-related anisotropy. For $x <$7\%, the variation in $| \Delta g |$ is linear and can be described by $\eta_x x$, where $\eta_x \approx$1.62$\times$ 10$^{-3}$. At $x$=20\%, the measured $| \Delta g |$ is 1.2 $\pm$ 0.04 $\times$ 10$^{-3}$, which is in good agreement with the computed value of 1$\times 10^{-3}$. When strain and electric fields are applied simultaneously, the strain effect is predicted to play a dominant role on $| \Delta g |$. A pair of conjugate observables, such as the quadrature amplitudes of harmonic motion, have fundamental fluctuations which are bound by the Heisenberg uncertainty relation. However, in a squeezed quantum state, fluctuations of a quantity can be reduced below the standard quantum limit, at the cost of increased fluctuations of the conjugate variable. Here we prepare a nearly macroscopic moving body, realized as a micromechanical resonator, in a squeezed quantum state. We obtain squeezing of one quadrature amplitude $1.1 \pm 0.4$ dB below the standard quantum limit, thus achieving a long-standing goal of obtaining motional squeezing in a macroscopic object., Comment: Physical Review Letters (accepted for publication, 2015)

Shifts from the expected nuclear magnetic resonance frequencies of antimony and bismuth donors in silicon of greater than a megahertz are observed in electrically detected magnetic resonance spectra. Defects created by ion implantation of the donors are discussed as the source of effective electric field gradients generating these shifts via quadrupole interaction with the nuclear spins. The experimental results are modeled quantitatively by molecular orbital theory for a coupled pair consisting of a donor and a spin-dependent recombination readout center., Comment: 3 figures

We present a broadband microwave setup for electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) based on microwave antennae with the ability to apply arbitrarily shaped pulses for the excitation of electron spin resonance (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) of spin ensembles. This setup uses non-resonant stripline structures for on-chip microwave delivery and is demonstrated to work in the frequency range from 4 MHz to 18 GHz. $\pi$ pulse times of 50 ns and 70 $\mu$s for ESR and NMR transitions, respectively, are achieved with as little as 100 mW of microwave or radiofrequency power. The use of adiabatic pulses fully compensates for the microwave magnetic field inhomogeneity of the stripline antennae, as demonstrated with the help of BIR4 unitary rotation pulses driving the ESR transition of neutral phosphorus donors in silicon and the NMR transitions of ionized phosphorus donors as detected by electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR).

We present pulsed electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) measurements at low magnetic fields using posphorus-doped silicon with natural isotope composition as a model system. Our measurements show that pulsed EDMR experiments, well established at X-band frequencies (10 GHz), such as coherent spin rotations, Hahn echoes, and measurements of parallel and antiparallel spin pair life times are also feasible at frequencies in the MHz regime. We find that the Rabi frequency of the coupled 31P electron-nuclear spin system scales with the magnetic field as predicted by the spin Hamiltonian, while the measured spin coherence and recombination times do not strongly depend on the magnetic field in the region investigated. The usefulness of pulsed low-field EDMR for measurements of small hyperfine interactions is demonstrated by electron spin echo envelope modulation measurements of the Pb0 dangling-bond state at the Si/SiO2 interface. A pronounced modulation with a frequency at the free Larmor frequency of hydrogen nuclei was observed for radio frequencies between 38 MHz and 400 MHz, attributed to the nuclear magnetic resonance of hydrogen in an adsorbed layer of water This demonstrates the high sensitivity of low-field EDMR also for spins not directly participating in the spin-dependent transport investigated., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures
