Abstract

The artificial intelligence (AI) system designer for thermal comfort faces insufficient data recorded from the current user or overfitting due to unreliable training data. This work introduces the reliable data set for training the AI subsystem for thermal comfort. This paper presents the control algorithm based on shallow supervised learning, which is simple enough to be implemented in the Internet of Things (IoT) system for residential usage using ASHRAE RP-884 and ASHRAE Global Thermal Comfort Database II. No training data for thermal comfort is available as reliable as this dataset, but the direct use of this data can lead to overfitting. This work offers the algorithm for data filtering and semantic data augmentation for the ASHRAE database for the supervised learning process. Overfitting always becomes a problem due to the psychological aspect involved in the thermal comfort decision. The method to check the AI system based on the psychrometric chart against overfitting is presented. This paper also assesses the most important parameters needed to achieve human thermal comfort. Nonwovens represent a part of technical textiles that are used for clothing (“cloth tech”). Nonwovens are also used in the footwear industry mainly for functional purposes, where the aesthetic properties are not of great importance. They are mainly used for support and reinforcement of footwear. All three groups of textiles are used for footwear, i.e. woven fabrics, knitted fabrics and nonwovens that are produced directly from fibres, yarns or threads mainly from chemical fibres and in a small proportion from natural fibres.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to study the possibility of introducing a three-stage procedure for chemical modifi cation of textile fi bres to achieve antimicrobial properties as well as to determine the infl uence of the procedure on chemical, morphological and functional properties of fi bres and their degree of biodegradation.The procedure was applied to 100% cotton (CO) and 100% polyester (PES) fabrics and a CO/PES fabric blend with a ratio of 50%/50%. The procedure of chemical modifi cation included (i) pre-treatment of fi bres with oxygen plasma, (ii) application of organofunctional trialkoxysilane for the creation of a silica matrix, and (iii) in situ synthesis of silver chloride. For comparison, a silica matrix with incorporated silver nanoparticles was also created on the samples without plasma treatment. Untreated and chemically modifi ed samples were buried in soil for a defi ned period of time, and biodegradation of the fi bres was conducted. Chemical and morphological changes after chemical modifi cation and biodegradation were determined by microscopic and spectroscopic analyses, thin-layer wicking, and colour measurements. The results show that chemical modifi cation did not cause signifi cant morphological changes to the fi bres. Treatment with oxygen plasma increased the fi bre hydrophilicity, which resulted in an increased concentration of adsorbed silver. The presence of silver on the CO and CO/PES fabrics signifi cantly decreased the degree of biodegradation compared to the untreated samples. Plasma treatment increased the degree of fi bre biodegradation irrespective of the silver concentration present on the fi bres. The low degree of biodegradation of the PES fabric was more due to the high hydrophobicity and crystallinity of the fi bres than to the presence of silver.

Abstract

Campylobacter jejuni is a major cause of gastrointestinal illness throughout the world. Despite its importance as a human pathogen, the current understanding of C. jejuni virulence mechanisms or the means by which the bacterium regulates the expression of virulence remains limited. In this thesis, two different areas were investigated and are presented separately. In Part I, studies focused on the characterisation of C. jejuni translocation across an epithelial-like barrier. It was previously demonstrated that many strains of C. jejuni are able to translocate across polarised Caco-2 cell monolayers. A small number of these strains are not detectable within cells but are nevertheless able to translocate across the monolayer, presumably using a paracellular route. The possibility of paracellular translocation (without invasion) was investigated by looking at changes in the permeability across differentiated Caco-2 cell monolayers. The data obtained suggest that C. jejuni does not significantly alter the permeability of the monolayer, causing no permanent damage to the host cells, at least in the short term. In the long term, however, C. jejuni infection leads to a drop in the monolayer resistance, suggesting host cell damage. Although paracellular translocation seems unlikely to occur in the early stages of infection, it may occur later as consequence of host cell damage caused during invasion. In Part n, studies focused on the role played by the environment on the regulation of C. jejuni virulence. Two-component regulatory systems are involved in the regulation of numerous cell functions in response to environmental stresses, including virulence. Recently, the polymerase chain reaction with degenerate oligonucleotide primers was used to isolate regulatory genes responsive to environmental stimuli. The fragment isolated was identified as homologous to the members of the family of response regulators. The DNA fragment was subsequently used to probe a genomic library. The complete gene, regXl, was isolated, sequenced and mutated. In order to determine the role of regXl in C. jejuni, the phenotype of two regXl mutants was investigated. The results suggest that RegXl may respond to changes in temperature and that RegXl may be involved in the control of genes related to growth, host cell interaction and in vivo colonisation. Furthermore, a putative histidine protein kinase partner to RegXl was identified downstream regXl.
