Braun (1) Abstract: We employ three views of agency theory in unison to investigate managerial risk-taking in uncertain markets. Using 124 firms that filed to go public toward the end of the technology boom (2000-2002), we explore the influence of CEO ownership on the decision to continue or withdraw an initial public offering (IPO) in deteriorating public equity markets. We find an inverse U-shaped relationship between CEOs' equity participation and the decision to proceed with a public offering: the probability of IPO cancellation in weak capital markets increases as CEOs hold too little or too much ownership. Our results also indicate that a firm's debt levels are positively linked with the IPO decision. CEO ownership and leverage intensity interact to influence the decision to take a firm public. Abstract

Empirical results of a study reveal various insights on why reverse leveraged buyouts go private, the extent of board restructuring during the buyout stage, and the effects of those changes in firm performance. The findings support the argument that boards represent a supplemental source of value creation in the buyout process.

Abstract

Abstract: The hole transport layer (HTL) is one of the key components in planar perovskite solar cells. This study reports a new kind of HTL fabricated using atomic layer deposition (ALD). By alloying TiO2 with IrOx, it is demonstrated that TiO2, a well‐known electron‐selective contact and electron transport layer in photovoltaic devices, can behave as an HTL with an appropriately high work function. Perovskite Cs0.17FA0.83Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 solar cells including this new hole transport material achieve a power conversion efficiency of 15.8% under AM 1.5G simulated solar irradiation compared to a 14.3% efficiency for otherwise‐identical devices incorporating a more standard NiO HTL layer. These results suggest the promise of transition metal oxide alloys synthesized by ALD as hole contact materials for optoelectronic devices, including advanced photovoltaics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

22. THE PRICE TAG OF FAMILY BUSINESS INVESTMENTS: TRADING ENTREPRENEURSHIP FOR SOCIOEMOTIONAL WEALTH.

Abstract

We integrate entrepreneurial orientation and socioemotional wealth perspectives in order to investigate investment decisions of family-owned firms in relation to environmental munificence and past performances. Using a panel of Italian firms (2006-2010) we show that family firms, unlike their nonfamily counterparts, are risk-seeking when environmental munificence is low and risk-averse when it is high. However, this result is conditioned on family businesses' past performance; family firms making investments when environmental munificence is high and past performance is low, as well as those with a strong performance record but a poor resource environment, outperform their non-family counterparts. 23. Risk Taking in Italian Family Firms: Environmental Munificence, Capital Spending, and Performance.

Abstract

We investigate entrepreneurial activities in family-owned businesses (FOBs) in relation to environmental munificence and performance gaps by integrating entrepreneurial orientation and socioemotional wealth perspectives. Using a panel of Italian firms (2006-2016), we show that family firms engage in risky entrepreneurial activities when environmental munificence is high. In adding performance gap to environmental munificence, we unexpectedly find that both high environmental munificence and performance above aspiration as well as low environmental munificence and performance stimulate entrepreneurial activities. However, only FOBs pursuing entrepreneurial activities during bad times reap the rewards of their risk-taking. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper explores the internationalization process of small and medium-sized family businesses. We rely on signal detection theory to explain the extent to which family managers identify a signal in either the domestic or international environment to pursue internationalization as a viable business opportunity. This particular conceptual model proposes that constraints in the domestic market and opportunities in the foreign market act as signal strength. However, a family business CEO-founder's centrality and inward orientation might lead him/her to ignore the signal, while generating noise and reducing motivation to pursue potential opportunities. Abstract

We investigate in-situ laser reflectometry for measuring the axial growth rate in chemical vapor deposition of assemblies of well-aligned vertical germanium nanowires grown epitaxially on single crystal substrates. Finite difference frequency domain optical simulations were performed in order to facilitate quantitative analysis and interpretation of the measured reflectivity data. The results show an insensitivity of the reflected intensity oscillation period to nanowire diameter and density within the range of experimental conditions investigated. Compared to previous quantitative in-situ measurements performed on III-V nanowire arrays, which showed two distinct rate regimes, we observe a constant, steady-state nanowire growth rate. Furthermore, we show that the measured reflectivity decay can be used to determine the germanium nanowire nucleation time with good precision. This technique provides an avenue to monitor growth of nanowires in a variety of materials systems and growth conditions.
