Abstract

The global diversity of fungi has been estimated between 2 to 11 million species, of which only about 155 000 have been named. Most fungi are invisible to the unaided eye, but they represent a major component of biodiversity on our planet, and play essential ecological roles, supporting life as we know it. Although approximately 20 000 fungal genera are presently recognised, the ecology of most remains undetermined. Despite all this diversity, the mycological community actively researches some fungal genera more commonly than others. This poses an interesting question: why have some fungal genera impacted mycology and related fields more than others? To address this issue, we conducted a bibliometric analysis to identify the top 100 most cited fungal genera. A thorough database search of the Web of Science, Google Scholar, and PubMed was performed to establish which genera are most cited. The most cited 10 genera are Saccharomyces, Candida, Aspergillus, Fusarium, Penicillium, Trichoderma, Botrytis, Pichia, Cryptococcus and Alternaria. Case studies are presented for the 100 most cited genera with general background, notes on their ecology and economic significance and important research advances. Abstract

Zusammenfassung: Hintergrund: Die Larynxmaske LMA Supreme™ (LMA-S) ist eine neue Einweglarynxmaske, die die Funktionen der LMA Proseal™ (PLMA, Magendrainage) mit der LMA Fastrach™ (erleichterte Einführung durch einen gebogenen Schaft) verbindet und seit April 2007 in Handel ist. Material und Methoden: In einer prospektiven Studie wurde die Anwendung der LMA-S der Größe 4 bei weiblichen Patienten ohne Hinweise auf eine schwierige Atemwegssicherung mit Studierenden im praktischen Jahr und Assistenzärzten im ersten Ausbildungsjahr, die nur über wenig Erfahrung mit der LMA-Anästhesie verfügten, untersucht. Erfolgsraten und Dauer der Einführung, oropharyngealer Leckagedruck (OLP), fiberoptische Position und Atemwegsmorbidität wurden dokumentiert. Ergebnisse: Dreißig Patientinnen wurden in die Studie aufgenommen. Die Einlage war bei 27 Patientinnen (90%) im ersten und bei 3 Patientinnen (10%) im zweiten Versuch möglich. Eine ausreichende Ventilation konnte innerhalb von 18,3 s (Variationsbreite 10–30 s, Standardabweichung ±4,2 s) hergestellt werden. Die Magensonde war immer im ersten Versuch platzierbar. Der mittlere OLP betrug 29,1 cmH2O (Variationsbreite 21–35 cmH2O, Standardabweichung ±4,8 cmH2O) bei einem Cuffdruck von 60 cmH2O. Die fiberoptische Kontrolle ergab eine optimale Position, sowohl direkt nach Einlage als auch am Ende des operativen Eingriffs. Drei Patientinnen (10%) klagten über leichte Halsschmerzen. Schluckstörungen oder Heiserkeit wurden nicht angegeben. Schlussfolgerung: Die Einlage der LMA-S war bei allen Patientinnen innerhalb von 30 s bei einer optimalen Lage, einem hohen OLP und geringer Atemwegsmorbidität möglich. Die LMA-S scheint ein Atemwegsinstrument für die anästhesiologische Routineanwendung zu sein, das auch von medizinischem Personal mit geringer klinischer Erfahrung sicher angewendet werden kann.

18. Golovinomyces inulaeU. Braun & H.D. Shin is the causative agent of powdery mildew on Telekia speciosaL. in Germany

Abstract

In central Europe, including Germany, Telekia speciosa(heart-leaved oxeye) is a synanthropic, non-native plant species commonly grown as an ornamental plant. A powdery mildew has recently been introduced on this host in Germany. This powdery mildew has previously been assigned to Golovinomyces cichoracearum(≡ Erysiphe cichoracearum) sensu lato. Two German specimens of powdery mildew on Telekiahave been sequenced and phylogenetically analysed. The analyses revealed that the German sequences obtained from the Telekiapowdery mildew are identical with a sequence retrieved from Golovinomyces inulaeon Pentanema salicinum(≡ Inula salicina) collected in Switzerland. Furthermore, holotype material of G. inulae, described from Korea, has been sequenced, which confirmed G. inulaeas causative agent of the Telekiapowdery mildew. The current distribution of G. inulaein Germany is briefly discussed including a first report of this pathogen from Austria.

Abstract

Psychological stress and physical activity are interrelated, constituting a relevant association to human health, especially in children. However, the association’s nature remains elusive, i.e., why psychological stress predicts both decreased and increased physical activity. To test whether effects vary as a function of the level of analyses, we derived intensive longitudinal data via accelerometers and stress questionnaires from 74 children across 7 days as they went about their daily routines (n = 513 assessments). Multilevel modelling analyses revealed that between children, higher psychological stress predicted decreased physical activity (standardized beta coefficient = −0.14; p = 0.046). Concurrently, within those children, higher psychological stress predicted increased physical activity across days (standardized beta coefficient = 0.09; p = 0.015). Translated to practice, children who experienced more stress than others moved less, but children were more active on days when they experienced heightened stress. This suggests that the analyses level is crucial to the understanding of the association between psychological stress and physical activity and should be considered to receive unequivocal results. If replicated, e.g., including high-frequency sampling and experimental manipulation in everyday life for in-depth insights on underlying mechanisms and causality, our findings may be translated to individually tailored (digital) prevention and intervention strategies which target children’s distress-feelings despite impairing their heightened physical activity in stressful situations and identify tipping points of chronic stress phases. Therefore, we especially call for more intensive longitudinal data approaches to tackle thus far neglected within-subject issues in the field of physical activity, sport and exercise research.
