30. Country-Level Drivers of Crowdfunding Platform Creation in Africa.

Abstract

Given the ongoing debate on the relationship between institutions and the development of crowdfunding, this study aims to better understand the joint effects of country-level formal and informal institutions on crowdfunding platform (CFP) creation in African countries. To achieve this goal, the current study uses multiple datasets, including the World Development Indicators (WDI), World Economic Forum (WEF), World Bank/International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The data cover 33 countries from 2011 to 2017. The results suggest that corruption impedes formal institutions from significantly influencing the creation of domestic CFPs in African countries. Consequently, the development of the domestic crowdfunding industry in Africa is linked to the centuries-old and culturally rooted African practices of individuals helping one another. Furthermore, the negative relationship between financial market development and the rise of CFPs enables us to conclude that the crowdfunding industry and traditional sources of financing are substitutable. 31. Indebtedness for young companies: effects on survival.

Abstract

Based on data from 7,350 Cameroonian companies created between 1990 and 2008, we study the link between the characteristics of indebtedness for young companies during their creation and survival period of up to three years, from three to five years, and beyond five years. We complement our quantitative analysis with semi-directive interviews of Cameroonian entrepreneurs to deepen our study. Our results are manifold. We show that access to bank loans during the creation phase, as well as the volume of loans or, to some extent, the debt ratio improve the probability of survival during the early years, but this effect fades away rapidly. The interviews shed light on the motivations of entrepreneurs, particularly of those with very small businesses. Finally, our work reveals the antecedent role of their social capital that facilitates their access to bank loans, and, therefore, the probability of company survival. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

36. Evolution and Structuration of Corporate Governance Models Over Time and Accross Countries.

Abstract

Using social responsibility ratings on over 663 companies belonging to 18 European countries in 2000 and 2010, this paper examines whether or to what extent stylized models of Corporate Governance (CG) shape national systems of CG and firm commitments in the long run. In doing so, we question arguments in favor of convergence versus continued divergence and alignment versus resistance or status quo. In particular, we assess the factors that explain these trends and the detected processes. Our findings are manifold but principally highlight the structuring dimension of both the shareholder-oriented and stakeholder- oriented models of CG, and the role of micro-economic factors in explaining the changing and varying practices of firm commitments.
