Abstract

This article highlights the significance of social memory in Christian missions. Mem- ory is a crucial phenomenon that shapes how individuals perceive reality and make decisions. Social memory, in particular, can aid anthropological researchers and Christian missionaries in engaging with people groups. The article summarizes the history of social memory studies and explores the effects of social trauma on group memory. It emphasizes the importance of understanding the context of a target people’s past for the success of the Christian mission. By examining a social group’s history, missionaries can gain insights into how the group is likely to respond to the Gospel message and how they are likely to interpret and apply it in their lives. Abstract

How Culex (Diptera: Culicidae) mosquitoes select and discriminate between potential avian hosts is critical for understanding the epidemiology of West Nile virus. Therefore, the present authors studied the behavioural responses of Culex quinquefasciatus (Say) and Culex pipiens molestus (Forsskål) to headspace volatiles of three avian species [chicken and pigeon (sexes analysed separately), and magpie], presented either alone or in combination with 600 p.p.m. carbon dioxide (CO2). The attraction of Cx. quinquefasciatus to the headspace volatiles of both sexes of chicken, and of female pigeon, in combination with CO2 was significantly higher than that achieved by the CO2 and solvent control. Although Cx. p. molestus was attracted to headspace volatiles of chickens and magpies, it was repelled by those of female pigeons when combined with CO2. An increased effect between the avian volatiles and CO2 was observed for Cx. quinquefasciatus, whereas the addition of CO2 had no effect on the attraction of Cx. p. molestus females. The results of this study demonstrate that Cx. quinquefasciatus and Cx. p. molestus are attracted to the odour of potential avian hosts. Future studies aimed at identifying the bioactive volatile compounds in the headspace of chickens may contribute to the potential development of effective surveillance and control tools against Culex species.

38. The figure of the child in democratic politics

Abstract

This article seeks to illuminate the figure of the child in democratic politics by arguing that children play a constitutive role as temporary outsiders who present both renewal and risk to the demos. Using Hannah Arendt’s concept of natality, we begin with an ontological account of children as new individuals that are central to renewing democratic freedom and plurality. In the second section, we explore how children can be conceived in terms of political risk by focussing on Arendt’s debate with Ralph Ellison concerning the desegregation of American schools in the 1960s. Their arguments about whether children should appear in politics underscores the constitutive role that child–adult relationships play in debates about the normative fabric of democratic society. Finally, we use the radical democratic theory of Chantal Mouffe to argue that children can be characterised as an excluded group of potential adversaries that appear in political contests over claims to represent the demos. From this perspective, the article reveals that children are central figures in democratic politics because they are constituents of an unknown future polity.

Abstract

Experimental analysis involved the use of ground plane pressure profiles and flow visualization to examine the flowfields related to single and twin jets impinging in crossflows. As crossflow-to-jet velocity is lowered, the ground vortex shifts away from the nozzle centerline. The impact of certain parameters on the rate of change of position was examined. A relationship between jet mapping and the effect of twin nozzle height on the upstream angle of the ground sheet is evident.

EPRaP is open to publishing research findings, literature reviews, commentaries, methodology papers, reflection on practice and book/resource reviews. It is part of a research and learning culture that recognises the importance of knowledge exchange and impact for partners in the community.
