Abstract

A study demonstrates two self-frequency conversions from the bifunctional laser and optical nonlinear GdAl3 (BO3) 4:Nd (super 3+) crystals. The highest yield was 0.12% and New Sellmeier formulas valid at least up to 2600nm are established from the results obtained by the demonstration.

Abstract

Idler generation from self-difference frequency mixing of the pump wave near 750 nm and the 1062-nm [Nd.sup.3+] laser emission in the bifunctional laser and nonlinear optical YA[l.sub.3][(B[O.sub.3]).sub.4]:[Nd.sup.3+] crystal was shown. The efficiency was 0.37%, and the infrared wavelength was tunable in the 2430-2600-nm range. New Sellmeier formulas that predict phase-matching polar angles for frequency conversion processes involving wavelengths up to 2600 nm were established. Abstract

International audience; Transparent composite ceramics based on YAG/Cr:YAG bilayer samples were manufactured by the solid-state reaction route and sequential slip-casting technique. They were characterized by light sheet fluorescence imaging (LSFI). This work shows that LSFI allows determining the spatial distribution of chromium with different valence state (Cr 4+ and Cr 3+) with a resolution close to 5 µm and high sensitivity in regards to the concentration. LSFI thus appears well adapted to the characterization of transparent ceramic materials with luminescent dopant gradient used as solid-state lasers optical components.

Abstract

International audience; The Kyropoulos technique allows growing large diameter Ti doped sapphire for Chirped pulse amplification laser. A scattering defect peculiar to Kyropoulos grown crystals is presented. This defect is characterized by different techniques: luminescence, absorption measurement, X-ray rocking curve. The impact of this defect to the potential application in chirped pulse amplification CPA laser is evaluated. The nature of this defect is discussed. Modified convexity of the interface is proposed to avoid the formation of this defect and increase the quality of the Ti sapphire crystal.

Abstract

We report in the present paper the Yb3+-doped Y2Ca3B4O12 diode-pumped laser operation in both continuous-wave (cw) and passively Q-switched modes. The differential slopes of the cw output power are in the 22%–40% range under different experimental conditions. Continuous tuning of the laser wavelength is obtained in the 1020–1057 nm range, in agreement with the broad emission spectra. In pulsed regime the repetition rate occurs up to 1.6 kHz and pulse energies of 30–75 μJ with about 40 ns duration are obtained. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the second self-frequency conversion, the Nd3+:GdAl3(BO3)4 laser operated in a single wavelength mode at 1062 nm. Then the self-difference frequency mixing process 1/λP-1/1062=1/λI occurred at a 29.9° phase matching angle. The [Yb.sup.3+]-doped [Y.sub.2][Ca.sub.3][B.sub.4][O.sub.12] diode-pumped laser operation in both continuous-wave (cw) and passively Q-switched modes is described. The tunability of the laser emission is analyzed in continuous mode and passive Q-switch pulsed mode is obtained.

Abstract

The Tm 3+ :KGd (WO 4 ) 2 crystal with the size up to 50 mm was grown from the K 2 O–WO 3 –BO 3 solvent system by using the top seeded solution growth method. The absorption spectrum was measured and its absorption peaks were confirmed. The emission spectra of the crystal at 455 and 665 nm were obtained when a light of 360 nm excited this crystal. A broad emission spectrum from 1650 to 2000 nm was obtained when a light of 800 nm excited this crystal. It is expected that this crystal may be useful as a tunable infrared laser crystal.

Abstract

International audience; Nine new isomorphic iodate compounds NaM(IO3)4 with M ¼ Y, Nd, Gd and AgM0(IO3)4 with M0 ¼ Y, La, Nd, Eu, Gd, Bi have been synthesized either by evaporation of concentrated nitric acid solution or by hydrothermal synthesis. They crystallize in the monoclinic acentric Cc space group. Typical unit cell parameters for AgY(IO3)4 are a ¼ 31.277(3) °A, b ¼ 5.547(1) °A, c ¼ 12.556(2) °A, b ¼ 91.11(2) , V ¼ 2178.0(6) °A3 and Z ¼ 8. Crystal structures have been solved on single crystals for NaY(IO3)4, AgY(IO3)4, AgLa(IO3)4, AgGd(IO3)4 and AgBi(IO3)4 and on powder for NaNd(IO3)4, NaGd(IO3)4, AgEu(IO3)4 and AgGd(IO3)4. They are thermally stable up to 550 C for NaY(IO3)4, 430 C for AgY(IO3)4, 500 C for AgLa(IO3)4 and 490 C for AgBi(IO3)4. The crystal structure reveals a two-dimensional layered network. The sheets are connected together by I/O interactions. All these metal iodates generate second harmonics and are transparent up to 12µm. So they are interesting as potential laser matrices in the mid and beginning of the far-infrared. The properties of Nd3+ and Yb3+-doped AgGd(IO3)4 and of Nd3+-doped AgLa(IO3)4 have been studied.

Abstract

Type III KGd(PO3)(4) and Nd:KGd(PO3)(4) single crystals have been successfully grown. We have proved that these crystals have a wide transparency window closing at 160 nm in the UV region and extending to 4 mu m in the IR region. We have determined that a slight rotation occurred for the dielectric frame in the 355-1064 nm range of wavelengths. We have measured the absorption in the I-4(9/2) -> F-4(5/2) channel and the emission in the F-4(3/2) -> I-4(11/2) channel. In addition to the three N-p, N-m, N-g usual polarizations, a fourth spectroscopic parameter representing the framework rotation of the linear polarization imaginary part around the N-p axis was needed for a full description. Lasing was obtained at 1052.4 nm in N-p polarization (ordinary wave) for propagation in the N-g - N-m principal plane.

Abstract

International audience; Rare-earth doped garnets (YAG:Nd, YAG:Yb, YSAG:Nd, GGG:Nd) are usually used materials in the field of high energy femtosecondes lasers. In one hand, the as-mentioned garnet phases present sufficiently high thermo-mechanical properties to withstand solicitations created at high working power. In other hand, the rare-earth ion introduced in solid solution in garnet matrix presents the required luminescent properties to produce laser amplification. Generally, amplifier medium pieces are manufactured in the single-crystal form by crystal growth methods (such as Czochralski method for example). Nevertheless, such materials present very long time and high costs with manufacturing by this route. By using the promising ceramic route, the transparent polycrystalline materials so-obtained can show similar optical properties to the single-crystal ones. To reach optical properties necessary to a laser application, numerous problems related to the elaboration of rare-earth doped garnet ceramic pieces must be previously solved. More particularly, experimental parameters such as the average grain size, volume fraction of residual secondary phases or porosity, must be controlled to obtain expected transparency and transmittance. The aim of the present work is to understand well the microstructural evolution of YSAG (Y3ScxAl5 xO12) ceramics by taking into account the presence of silica as a sintering aid. If the YAG-based ceramics production starts to be well controlled, sintering mechanisms remain to be explored for YSAG ceramics. In the present study, the role of addition agents (SiO2) on the densification and grain growth processes for neodymium-doped YSAG matrix has been studied. The samples have been prepared by ball milling of pure oxides, shaped by cold uniaxial pressing and sintered under vacuum between 1200°C and 1700°C. After treatment, the samples were characterized by different techniques: EPMA, SEM, TEM and thermal analyses. Optical properties of Nd:YSAG were finally correlated to microstructural characteristics and laser emission with broadband absorption was demonstrated.
