One of the major causes of worldwide amphibian declines is a skin infection caused by a pathogenic chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis). This study documents the interactions between this pathogen and a susceptible amphibian host, the boreal toad (Bufo boreas). The amount of time following exposure until death is influenced by the dosage of infectious zoospores, duration of exposure, and body size of the toad. The significant relation between dosage and the number of days survived (dose-response curve) supports the hypothesis that the degree of infection must reach a particular threshold of about 107–108 zoosporangia before death results. Variation in air temperature between 12°C and 23°C had no significant effect on survival time. The infection can be transmitted from infected to healthy animals by contact with water containing zoospores; no physical contact between animals is required. These results are correlated with observations on the population biology of boreal toads in which mortalities associated with B. dendrobatidis have been identified.

Factores especificos descritos co-rresponden al material del cateter, ubicacion,metodo de instalacion, instalacion electiva o deurgencia, numero de lumenes, duracion de lacateterizacion y caracteristicas del huesped (que-mados, recien nacidos de muy bajo peso)

Este trabajo tiene como objetivo mostrar los resultados de 34 estudios de costos de infecciones intrahospitalarias (IIH) realizados en infeccion urinaria (ITU), herida operatoria (IHO), endometritis (END), neumonia (NEU), infecciones del torrente sanguineo (ITS) y herida operatoria cesarea (IHOC), realizados en 24 hospitales de alta y mediana complejidad, tanto publicos como privados del pais, utilizando la metodologia propuesta por la OPS, en los que se compararon pacientes con IIH con otros pacientes sin IIH de igual sexo, grupo etario, patologia y servicio clinico, en hospitales. Se calculo la estadia hospitalaria y la utilizacion de antimicrobianos en ambos grupos. Conclusiones: todos los estudios mostraron aumento de la estadia y de la utilizacion de antimicrobianos en los pacientes con IIH en rangos de entre 2 y 4 veces. Las IHO e ITS aumentan mas la estadia que otras IIH. Las IHO y NEU aumentan mas el uso de antimicrobianos que otras IIH. No hay grandes diferencias en los resultados por tipo de hospital. La mayor diferencia se observo en IHO, probablemente por los distintos tipos de cirugias estudiadas.

This paper exhibits the results of 34 cost studies for nosocomial urinary tract infections, wound infections, endometritis, pneumonia, bloodstream infections and caesarean wound infections, conducted in 24 high and medium complexity hospitals in Chile using PAHO (Panamerican Health Organization) proposed methodology: patients with nosocomial infections (NI) were compared with patients without NI of equal sex, age, pathology and clinical unit in hospitals with high and medium complexity compared themselves. The length of stay (LOS) and the use of antimicrobial in DDD were compared in both groups. Conclusion: All studies showed that NI increased length of stay and use of antimicrobial between 2 to 4 times. Wound infections and bloodstream infections increased the LOS more than other NI. Wound infections and pneumonia increased antimicrobial use more than other NI. There were no relevant differences depending on the type of hospitals. The bigger variability was observed in wound infections due probably to the difference in surgical procedures included in the study.

109INFECTIONS IN HIP ARTHROPLASTY: RESULTS OF THENOSOCOMIAL INFECTIONS SURVEILLANCE SYSTEM OF CHILE.1996-1999Epidemiological surveillance of nosocomial infections in hip arthroplastywas established in chilean hospitals in 1996. Between 1996 and 1999 the surveillancesystem reported, in 28 hospitals, 134 infections in 3.889 operations, with acummulative rate of 3.5%. Epidemiological surveillance in Chile does notdifferentiate infections of the surgical wound from infections of the hip replacementitself, and the period of follow up is during hospital stay after surgery. The mostfrequent etiological agents were non fermentative Gram negative bacilli (33.3%),mainly Acinetobacter baumannii. Gram positive cocci represented 23.8% of theetiologies. Hospitals with higher mean number of operations had lower rates(5.0% in hospitals with low surgical volume and 2.9% in hospitals with highervolume). The findings of the surveillance system suggest some risk factors thatrequire further research, such as the duration of preoperative hospital stay andexperience of the surgical center.Key words: Nosocomial infection, Arthroplasty, Epidemiological surveillance.EPIDEMIOLOGIA
