A 45-year-old man from Pakistan presented with two raised and nodular plaques on his left arm that had been present since birth. He habitually scratched the lesions. The patient had no relevant medical history and denied contact with animals or recent travel. Biopsies revealed granulomatous inflammation, and further testing confirmed the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb). The patient received antituberculosis therapy, leading to significant improvement in the skin lesions. This case highlights the importance of considering cutaneous Mtb in cases of chronic lesions with non-necrotizing granulomas and emphasizes the need for tissue culture to confirm the diagnosis and initiate prompt treatment. Fusarium is a polyphyletic genus of plant pathogens, members of which can cause opportunistic human infections with varying superficial and systemic presentations, including disseminated infections which typically occur in immunocompromised patients and have a poor prognosis. Treatment is challenging due to intrinsic resistance to many antifungal agents, and antifungal susceptibility testing is therefore essential. Early suspicion, isolation of the organism, and prompt initiation of management are crucial to improving survival. We present a case of disseminated Bisifusarium infection following toxic epidermal necrolysis in a child with B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, successfully treated with liposomal amphotericin B, voriconazole, flucytosine, and terbinafine. Balancing problems in national accounts and similar applications may be addressed by optimization methods that aim to maximize preservation of specific characteristics of the unadjusted data, for example, levels or time‐series movements. However, published methods do not always indicate the assumptions that underpin these methods, making it hard to identify when those assumptions might be violated or how to generalize them to complex cases. Previous authors have observed that least‐squares estimation methods correspond to maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) under normality assumptions. This paper explores this relationship in the context of published "movement preservation"/"level preservation" methods, showing how the MLE interpretation identifies implicit assumptions made by these methods and, hence, helps inform decisions about their use. It also notes a case where the MLE and "preservation" approaches diverge, and gives a framework for generalizing MLE approaches to complex scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary The longer term sustainability of the minerals sector may hinge, in large part, on finding innovative solutions to the challenges of energy intensity and carbon dioxide (CO2) management. This article outlines the need for large-scale 'carbon solutions' that might be shared by several colocated energy-intensive and carbon-intensive industries. In particular, it explores the potential for situating a mineral carbonation plant as a carbon sink at the heart of a minerals and energy complex to form an industrial symbiosis. Several resource-intensive industries can be integrated synergistically in this way, to enable a complex that produces energy and mineral products with low net CO2 emissions. An illustrative hypothetical case study of such a system within New South Wales, Australia, has been constructed, on the basis of material and energy flows derived from Aspen modeling of a serpentine carbonation process. The synergies and added value created have the potential to significantly offset the energy and emission penalties and direct costs of CO2 capture and storage. This suggests that greenfield minerals beneficiation and metals refining plants should consider closer integration with the power production and energy provision plants on which they depend, together with a carbon solution, such as mineral carbonation, as a critical element of such integration. Life cycle management can assist the mining industry in meeting its stated sustainability commitments. This paper demonstrates how sustainability metrics formulated from a life cycle perspective can be quantified at the operational level using a process model of open cut coal strip mining. An understanding of the material and energy flows of a working pit enables the identification of key areas to target for improvement. The effect of operational changes can also be modelled to determine changes in overall mine sustainability metrics, whether they are more local in nature, such as respirable particulates, or of global concern, such as greenhouse gas emissions. This can facilitate the adoption of more eco-efficient methods of operation, particularly where the focus is on maximising the output of the mine's ultimate utility; namely energy.
