La ricerca d’archivio ha portato alla scoperta di un importante documento relativo all’arte veronese del diciottesimo secolo. Si tratta di un contratto privato tra il nobile bresciano Giammaria Mazzuchelli e lo scultore veronese Francesco Tomezzoli. Il primo chiede al secondo di realizzare alcune statue per il giardino della villa che aveva fatto edificare a Ciliverghe, in territorio bresciano. Dieci dovevano rappresentare i personaggi della Commedia dell’arte, due le divinità Flora e Pomona. Queste sculture non si sono conservate. Il documento tuttavia è importante per la ricchezza di informazioni che fornisce sulla realizzazione di questi manufatti: iconografia, dimensioni, prezzo stabilito, tempi di consegna, materiali da impiegare, modalità di trasporto.

The Winged Victory (Vittoria Alata) of Brescia is one of the most important Roman bronzes in Italy. Discovered in 1826, it dates back to the 1st century AD. Since the 19th century the statue has undergone multiple conservation interventions. The last one started in 2018 up to 2020. The project was defined with a multidisciplinary approach which made it possible to study and compare the data obtained from the restoration with those deriving from scientific analyses, humanistic studies and other specialist research. For the first time after the discovery, it was possible to explore the internal surfaces of the statue and acquire very important data for the technological study of the work. Particular attention was paid to cleaning the surfaces; once the materials accumulated over time were removed, partly residues of past interventions, it was possible to rediscover the beauty of the face, the refinement of the modeling and the high peculiarity of the wings. New technological solutions have been studied for the internal support that replaced the one inserted in the nineteenth century to hold the arms and wings of the statue, as it was no longer suitable for guaranteeing the safe conservation of the work. Since October 2020, the Winged Victory has been exhibited in the renovated Capitoline temple in Brescia, where it was discovered.

Herein, the power of time series data becomes evident, as it proves indispensable for capturing pollutant concentrations over time. These data unveil critical insights, including trends, seasonal and cyclical patterns, and the crucial property of stationarity. Brescia, a town located in Northern Italy, faces the pressing challenge of air pollution. To enhance its status as a smart city and address this concern effectively, statistical methods employed in time series analysis play a pivotal role. This article is dedicated to examining how ARIMA and LSTM models can empower Brescia as a smart city by fitting and forecasting specific pollution forms. These models have established themselves as effective tools for predicting future pollution levels. Notably, the intricate nature of the phenomena becomes apparent through the high variability of particulate matter. Even during extraordinary events like the COVID-19 lockdown, where substantial reductions in emissions were observed, the analysis revealed that this reduction did not proportionally decrease PM2.5 and PM10 concentrations. This underscores the complex nature of the issue and the need for advanced data-driven solutions to make Brescia a truly smart city.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a parasitic zoonosis caused by Leishmania spp. that usually manifests itself in immunocompromised subjects. It is a rare and neglected disease, and it is not endemic in the province of Brescia (Italy). Three cases of human VL occurred in Brescia from October to December 2021 in immunocompetent patients. We evaluated the patients looking for signs of underlying immunodeficiencies and conducted further epidemiological evaluations in the province of Brescia without success. An analysis of the sera levels of the main cytokines involved in the immune response to VL was performed. All patients presented a significant augmentation of CXCL-10, CCL-4, and IL-6. The patients tested during the acute phase showed an elevation of IL-1α, IL-5, IL-10, and IL-12, while in the recovery phase, higher levels of TNF-α and IL-7 were detected. Altogether, a predominant activation of the T-helper-2 pathway emerged during the acute phase of the parasite infection, while the cytokines associated with the T-helper-1 pathway were less represented. This imbalanced immune response to the parasite infection might play a crucial role in the development of VL in immunocompetent patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A cache of documents from the private archive of the Brescia engineer and scholar Vincenzo Tonni Bazza (1878-1920) has recently surfaced on the antiquarian market and promptly been purchased by the "Raccolte Storiche" Research Centre at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore Brescia campus. The acquisition has enabled researchers to shed further light on Tonni Bazza and explore his contribution to the rediscovery, both nationally and internationally, of Niccolò Tartaglia (1499-1557) in the first two decades of the twentieth century. Tonni Bazza was a little-known entrepreneur who served as an intermediary in Rome between the leading Italian industrial companies and the government; he also took an interest in financial and cultural institutions and organisations and was a keen observer of Italian politics. Physical reminders of Fascist rule in Italy can be found in virtually every Italian town and city. To date, though, studies of how Italians have dealt with this 'difficult heritage' have focused overwhelmingly on Rome, where Fascism's copious remains are treated and admired as aesthetic objects, unmoored from their political–historical origins. Implied, assumed or articulated in these studies is the idea of Rome as an exemplar of the nation: that what is true of the capital is true of the country. In fact, the idea that Rome's approach to its Fascist heritage is representative of Italy's has yet to be properly tested. This article argues for the need to go 'beyond Rome' in order to gain a deeper, richer, and more nuanced understanding of the ways in which Italians have negotiated the difficult heritage of Fascism. Focusing on the provincial Lombard city of Brescia, the article reveals the complex interplay between time, place, use, memory, aesthetics, and politics in shaping how bresciani have negotiated three surviving 'faces' of Fascism: Marcello Piacentini's monumental piazza della Vittoria; Arturo Dazzi's colossal statue 'L'Era Fascista', popularly known as the 'Bigio'; and Oscar Prati's monument-ossuary to the fallen of the Great War. Il presente report di valutazione di impatto nasce dall'esigenza di analizzare i risultati raggiunti dal progetto Alfa Omega Next, ovvero il progetto/sistema della provincia di Brescia rivolto ai minori autori di reato e promosso dalle Cooperative sociali Il Calabrone, Cauto, Area, dall’Istituto dei Figli di Maria Immacolata, dalla Scuola Bottega Artigiani di San Paolo, dal Cento Studi Socialis e dal Comune di Brescia. Obiettivo generale del progetto è stata la rigenerazione delle relazioni tra il minore e il territorio di appartenenza, in un'ottica di giustizia riparativa. Tra i punti di forza salienti si annovera l'impiego di strumenti di valutazione multidisciplinare integrata così come l'accompagnamento educativo individualizzato (coaching). Entrambe le strategie hanno consentito al progetto di accogliere e accompagnare un target di beneficiari sfaccettato, co-costruendo con i beneficiari stessi i percorsi, le attività e gli obiettivi di crescita personale. L'elevata eterogeneità nei beneficiari e nei percorsi implementati ha rappresentato una sfida per il percorso di valutazione, il quale si è avvalso di strumenti quantitativi e qualitativi. Si presenta come fondamentale l'evoluzione delle capacità e delle competenze dei beneficiari prima e dopo i percorsi, viste tramite lo sguardo sia dei minori stessi che degli operatori. Il percorso di valutazione fornisce indicazioni rispetto all'efficacia delle iniziative educative e formative, mettendo in evidenza gli elementi che possono massimizzare il beneficio per i destinatari e ottimizzare l'impatto sul territorio.

This article explores the attributes and religious, social and political activities of local religious groups in three Italian cities across all religious traditions. This is the first application of Congregations Study methodology in Italy to analyze the social composition, structure and activities of religious communities. The research was conducted between 2020 and 2021 with a total number of 877 communities mapped in the cities of Bologna, Milan and Brescia, and their surroundings. All local religious groups in three cities and their surroundings were counted and one key informant per group was interviewed (N = 566) with a Congregations Study questionnaire. Based on the results of the interviews, we found that, during the last decade, the dynamics of growth of adults' and children's regular religious participation was distinct within the Muslim and Christian Orthodox communities. Social service for elderly, environmental programs and political activity were found to be promoted by the Catholic communities to a stronger degree, while activities linked to the support of migrants were endorsed stronger by Muslim and Orthodox groups. Moreover, this study assessed the theological, ethical and political orientation of religious communities, highlighting different trends across religious traditions. The article discusses various configurations of urban religious diversity by bringing similarities and contrasts between communities of dominant religious tradition and minority religions, thus questioning the applicability of City Congregations Study (CCS) methodology to the analysis of configurations of religious diversity in Italy. The article analyses the relationship between gender and the sacred in the prophetic elements of Cereta’s Epistolae Familiares. The author’s letters of autobiography, political engagement and reform of customs are considered by relating them to Savonarola’s influence and the writings of Birgitta of Sweden and, in particular, the language and rhetorical strategies of Catherine of Siena.

In his multifaceted study of Italian painting, Roberto Longhi was particularly sensitive to the special role of eccentric, singular painters. One of these was Lorenzo Lotto, whom the Italian researcher considers a real artistic revelation of the first decade of the sixteenth century. Few painters evade scholarly "stylistic categorisation' with as much adroitness as Lorenzo Lotto, whose work stands out as radically innovative. His individual style evolved under the influence of the painting traditions of Venice, but also Central Italy and Northern Europe. The article attempts to discuss another great, less known and clearly distinct artistic tradition contributing to the uniqueness of Lotto's art -- that of Venetian mainland, known as terraferma, with the Lombard cities conquered by Venice, Brescia foremost. Although Lorenzo Lotto was the heir of Giovanni Bellini and Antonella da Messina, the most recognisable features contributing to the uniqueness of Lotto's art are rooted in the same ground as the art of artists from Brescia. COVID-19 has generated an unprecedented shock to the global economy causing both the decrease in demand and supply. The purpose of this paper is to simulate the effect of COVID-19 on firms' financial statements in Brescia. The shocked information is then fed into two bankruptcy models with the aim of providing an up-to-date picture of firms' economic health in one of the most prosperous industrial areas in Italy and Europe.

Within transnational labor, the working capital of migrants may recoil as aging and disability occur, crushing people's everyday life and aspirations. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork with Indo-Pakistani minorities in Brescia, northern Italy, the author queries "a case for affliction," seeing the experience of a breadwinner's stroke disrupting his household. While for decades Punjabi diasporas have settled abroad remitting to the homeland, social attainment oft en remains precarious for first-time movers and their off spring. Aft er 20-year residence in a destination country, a migrant father's collapse rebounds on his kindred, who regrettably turn to local welfare and public housing but also readjust personal desires toward sustainable family care. Intersectional analysis abets the participants' narratives in challenging any set "sense of inequality," embodied, and embedded in run-of-the-mill racialized capitalism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper contextualizes the life of a forgotten Dominican Sister, Fantina Gambara, from the Convent of Santa Caterina in Brescia, in the light of the exempla of medieval reformers in the province of Brescia. The Vita della Beata Caritade, written in 1558 by the Dominican Father Domenico Martinengo, is archived in the town in which the Sister had grown up. Against the background of the sack of Brescia in 1512, the voice of a woman will be put in dialogue with the spread and circulation of the writings of Catherine of Siena and the prophetical voices of the Dominican women of Brescia.
