Abstract

The 22 genera of New World Phileurini are briefly reviewed and characterized, and English and Spanish keys to all the genera are provided for the first time, thus facilitating generic identifications. Chiliphileurus Endrödi (a junior synonym of the Asian genus Eophileurus Arrow), Moraguesia Dechambre (transferred to Oxyligyrus Arrow in the tribe Pentodontini), and Platyphileurus Ohaus (transferred to the tribe Oryctini) are no longer part of the New World phileurine fauna. The monobasic PhileucourtusDechambre is considered a junior synonym of Hemiphileurus Kolbe.

Abstract

Abstract The enigmatic genus Stenocrates Burmeister has 52 species that are widely distributed from Mexico to Argentina, but mainly in South America. In the present study, the larva of the third instar and pupa of Stenocrates agricola Dechambre & Hardy, 2004 are described and illustrated based on specimens from Argentina, this being the first description of immatures for the genus. The adult is also redescribed, significantly expanding the number of characters and providing information on the natural history of this species. In addition, 28 species of Cyclocephalini and 20 species of Pentodontini are morphologically compared, emphasizing the most useful larval characters used among these beetles. Stenocrates agricola shows frequent and common characters of Pentodontini species but scarce (and even absent) characters typical of Cyclocephalini species, including some considered diagnostic for this tribe. Accordingly we consider that the tribal position of Stenocrates remains controversial and more study is needed to clarify the tribal status of Stenocrates. We believe that larval morphology provides important information in systematics studies that can clarify tribal relationships within the Dynastinae.

Abstract

Abstract Six new species of Stenocrates (Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae) are described from the Amazon Basin of Brazil: S. rionegroensis, S. varzeaensis, S. inpai, S. amazonicus, S. ariasi, and S. laceyi. The females of S. haackae Ratcliffe and S. popei Endrödi are reportd for the first time and briefly characterized. Stenocrates popei is listed from Brazil and constitutes a new country record.

Abstract

The eight species of dynastine scarab beetles that occur in Chile are reviewed. Keys, descriptions, geographic distributions, monthly adult activity, notes on natural history, illustrations, and distribution maps are provided for all species. The erroneous records of 16 dynastine species reported from Chile are reviewed and clarified. The monotypic genus Chiliphileurus Endrodi, 1977 is reduced to junior synonymy with Eophileurus Arrow, 1908, and its only species, Chiliphileurus tuberculatus Endrodi, 1977, follows as a new junior synonym of the Asian Eophileurus cingalensis Arrow, 1908.

Megasoma lecontei Hardy is the most rarely collected of all species of Megasoma Kirby, and the female remained undescribed. A description and illustrations of the female of M. lecontei are provided for the first time based on several specimens from near Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico. A revised key to the Megasoma species occurring in Baja California Sur, Mexico is presented.

Abstract

The adult scarab beetle fauna of the canopy in a lowland tropical rainforest in southern Venezuela was observed and collected by means of a 42-m-tall tower crane for a complete year. This first census of an entire Amazonian canopy scarab community was embedded within the interdisciplinary research project “Towards an understanding of the structure and function of a Neotropical rainforest ecosystem with special reference to its canopy” organized by the Austrian Academy of Science. The Scarabaeidae represented one of the most species-rich beetle families in the canopy of the crane plot and were therefore selected for a detailed analysis of host-use patterns. Thirty-three species of Scarabaeidae with 399 individuals were recorded, including two species represented by singletons. Subfamilies abundant in the canopy were the Rutelinae, Dynastinae, and Melolonthinae. Species were diurnal or nocturnal flower visitors restricted in their occurrence to their host trees during the flowering season. The scarab beetles remained commonly on one host tree species throughout the entire flowering period and switched to another host tree species only after depletion of food resources. Some species fed on extrafloral nectar but feeding on fruits and leaves was uncommon in the observed species. Most species showed a broad host range, often with abundant species recorded on several host trees. Seven species were found exclusively on one tree species. The co-occurrence of up to five congeneric species sharing the same host trees and diet was conspicuous. With this study, it could be shown how species of Scarabaeidae track available food resources within the canopy of a tropical rainforest.

Lawrence Saylor was a preeminent scarab beetle taxonomist during the 1930s and 1940s who produced a large and significant body of taxonomic work in a relatively short period of time. We know very little about him due, in some measure, to the fact that insect taxonomy was a sideline to his many other professional employments. A review of Saylor's life is provided here based upon new information recently acquired as well as a brief review of his scientific publications.

A comprehensive revision of the genus Hoplopyga Thomson, 1880 is presented. Eighteen species are redescribed, and two new species are described. A key for identification, distribution maps, and images of the 20 species are provided. Hoplopyga ruteri Antoine is removed from the genus and placed in junior synonymy with Macrocranius similis Schurhoff. Lectotypes are designated for Hoplopyga brasiliensis (Gory and Percheron), Hoplopyga corumbana Schurhoff, and Hoplopyga multipunctata (Gory and Percheron). The following new synonymies are established: Hoplopyga lucidiventris (Thomson) is Hoplopyga foeda (Schaum); Hoplopyga spurca (Janson) is Hoplopyga liturata (Olivier); Hoplopyga monacha (Gory and Percheron) and Hoplopyga rubida (Gory and Percheron) are Hoplopyga singularis (Gory and Percheron). A guild of Neotropical rainforest dung- and carrion-feeding beetles (Scarabaeinae, Aphodiinae, Trogidae) at Reserva Florestal Ducke in Amazonian Brazil was inventoried using baited pitfall traps continuously for 56 weeks during September 1977 to October 1978. The 20 traps were baited with either dung or carrion, and the preservatives in the traps were solutions of either chloral hydrate or picric acid so that all combinations of bait and preservatives were present. A total of 19,416 specimens, 66 species, 20 genera, two subfamilies of Scarabaeidae (Scarabaeinae and Aphodiinae), and two families (Scarabaeidae and Trogidae) were collected during the 56-week study. The by-catch of approximately 300,000 other insects was retained at the Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia (INPA) for further studies. Abstract

The genus Desicasta Thomson, 1878 is comprehensively reviewed, and the formerly eight species are reduced to three. Redescriptions of previously known species, a key for identification, and illustrations of the three species are provided. Desicasta sculptilis Thomson, 1878, Moscheuma sebosum Neervoort van de Poll, 1886, and Moscheuma opaca Kraatz, 1898 are placed as new junior synonyms of Desicasta lobata (Olivier, 1789). Desicasta laevicostata (Neervoort van de Poll, 1886) is a new junior synonym of Desicasta reichei (Thomson, 1860). Desicasta nonfriedi Schoch, 1896 is a new junior synonym of Amithao erythropus (Burmeister, 1842).

Abstract

The genus Amithao Thomson, 1878 is comprehensively revised. Redescriptions of previously known species, a key for identification, and illustrations of the 13 species are provided. Guatemalica marginicollis (Burmeister) is transferred to Amithao. The following new synonyms are established: Desicasta nonfriedi Schoch and Amithao erici Mitter are Amithao erythropus (Burmeister); Amithao thomsoni (Janson) is Amithao haematopus (Schaum); Amithao niveosparsus Moser and Amithao sparsus Casey are Amithao lafertei (Thomson); and Amithao spence (Gory and Percheron) is Amithao tristis (F.). Amithao obscurus Schoch is a female of Tiaocera rhinoceros (Gory and Percheron). Amithao staudingeri Schurhoff is rediscovered. Amithao tristis (F.) is transferred from junior to senior synonymy. Amithao anthracinus Ratcliffe from Panama is described as a new species.

Abstract

Orizabus australis Ratcliffe and Solis is described as a new species from Costa Rica. It resembles Orizabus hondurensis Ratcliffe and Cave from Honduras and is distinguished from that species. Species of Orizabus Fairmaire are known from the central United States to Honduras, but O. australis represents the first known occurrence for the genus in Costa Rica where it represents the southernmost occurrence of the genus. A revised key to the genera of Pentodontini of Costa Rica is provided, and O. australis is incorported into emended couplets of previously published keys to males and females of Orizabus species.

Abstract

Here we describe the association of Enema pan (F., 1775) (Scarabaeidae: Dynastinae: Oryctini) with bamboo plants in the genus Guadua Kunth (Poaceae: Bambuseae) in a lowland rainforest in southeastern Peru. Mounds at the base of Guadua stems and underground tunnels over one meter long are constructed by adults. Males were found inside these tunnels and in mounds at the base of bamboo stems where they shred and feed on bamboo sap. Males were observed perching at the top of opened mounds only at night, waving their antennae. This study provides the first description of the burrows of E. pan and its association with bamboo plants in southwestern Amazonia.

Hoplopyga antilliana Ratcliffe, new species, is described from Grenada and Union Island in the Lesser Antilles. It resembles Hoplopyga liturata (Olivier) from Central and South America and is distinguished from that species. Species of Hoplopyga Thomson are known from Mexico to Argentina, but this species represents the first known occurrence for the genus in the West Indies.

Abstract

“Cyclocephala nigricollis” Burmeister is a relatively common species in some parts of the southern United States, with disjunct populations in Virginia and the Carolinas in the eastern United States. After examination of specimens and the literature, we conclude that C. nigricollis is a nomen dubium and that its neotype was invalidly proposed. Accordingly, Cyclocephala robusta LeConte, as the next available name, is the correct designation for this taxon.

Ganganomala saltini Ratcliffe, Jameson, and Zorn, a new genus and new species of Anomalini (subtribe Anomalina), is described fromBangladesh and Nepal. To place the new genus within the context of the tribe and subtribe, we provide a key to the four subtribes of world Anomalini, a list of comparative characters and character states for diagnosis and classification of Old World Anomalina, and comparative diagnostic characters for genera of Old World Anomalina. Circumscription, description, diagnosis, and illustrations for the new genus and species are provided. As a result of this research, the Anomalina includes 50 genera and subgenera, and advances our understanding of global anomaline biodiversity.
