Unter dem Motto „Ernährung und Landwirtschaft - Transformation macht nur gemeinsam Sinn“ ist ein Tagungsband entstanden, der dazu einlädt, gemeinsam sowohl generelle Zukunftsperspektiven als auch die Lösung konkreter Herausforderungen zu diskutieren. Dabei wurde versucht, das klassische Leitprinzip des ökologischen Landbaus: „Gesunder Boden – Gesunde Pflanzen – Gesunde Menschen und Tiere“ mit den neuartigen Konzepten einer Planetary Health Diet („Gesunde Nahrungsmittel aus Anbausystemen innerhalb der planetaren Grenzen“) zu vereinen. Auch die Bedeutung des Ökolandbaus als Treiber für ein Agrar- und Ernährungssystem innerhalb der planetaren Grenzen kam in zahlreichen Beiträgen zum Ausdruck. Die Tagung vereinte 523 unterschiedliche Akteurinnen und Akteure zu einem produktiven Austausch neuester wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnisse und innovativen Ideen und schuf eine Netzwerkplattform, um das Thema Agrar- und Ernährungswende mit der Praxisforschung zu verbinden. Neben drei transdisziplinären Plenarvorträgen wurden 111 Fachvorträge und 104 Poster vorgestellt und es fanden 16 diskurs-orientierte Workshops, acht Fachexkursionen und eine Präkonferenz statt. Dieser Tagungsband dokumentiert die wissenschaftlichen Beiträge. Dabei ist gut erkennbar, welch breites Spektrum die Ökologische Landwirtschaft und die Ernährungswissenschaften abdecken. Unser herzlicher Dank gilt allen 202 Erst- und 196 Co-Autorinnen und Autoren, den umseitig gelisteten 68 Gutachterinnen und Gutachtern sowie allen, die zum Gelingen der Tagung beigetragen haben, sei es durch wertvolle Hinweise, tatkräftige Mitarbeit oder großzügige Unterstützung als Förderer und Sponsoren.

A key problem in ion-solid interaction is the lack of experimental access to the dynamics of the processes. While it is clear that the mechanisms of interaction and sputtering depend on the kinetic and potential energy (sum of ionization energies) of the projectile, the importance and interplay of the various interaction mechanisms are unknown. Here, we have irradiated substrate-supported (Au, SiO2) monolayers of MoS2 with highly charged xenon ions (HCIs; charge state: 17+ to 40+), extracted the emitted neutral postionized Mo particles in a time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and determined their velocity distributions. We find two main contributions, one at high velocities and a second at lower velocities, and assign them to kinetic and potential effects, respectively. We show that for slow HCIs (5 keV) the interaction mechanisms leading to particle emission by electronic excitation and momentum transfer, respectively, are independent of each other, which is consistent with our atomistic simulations. Our data suggest that the predominant mechanism for potential sputtering is related to electron-phonon coupling, while nonthermal processes do not play a significant role. We anticipate that our work will be a starting point for further experiments and simulations to better understand the interplay of processes arising from Epot and Ekin.

Demand for sustainably produced biomass is expected to increase with the need to provide renewable commodities, improve resource security and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with COP26 commitments. Studies have demonstrated additional environmental benefits of using perennial biomass crops (PBCs), when produced appropriately, as a feedstock for the growing bioeconomy, including utilisation for bioenergy (with or without carbon capture and storage). PBCs can potentially contribute to Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) (2023-27) objectives provided they are carefully integrated into farming systems and landscapes. Despite significant research and development (R&D) investment over decades in herbaceous and coppiced woody PBCs, deployment has largely stagnated due to social, economic and policy uncertainties. This paper identifies the challenges in creating policies that are acceptable to all actors. Development will need to be informed by measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) of greenhouse gas emissions reductions and other environmental, economic and social metrics. It discusses interlinked issues that must be considered in the expansion of PBC production: (i) available land; (ii) yield potential; (iii) integration into farming systems; (iv) R&D requirements; (v) utilisation options; and (vi) market systems and the socio-economic environment. It makes policy recommendations that would enable greater PBC deployment: (1) incentivise farmers and land managers through specific policy measures, including carbon pricing, to allocate their less productive and less profitable land for uses which deliver demonstrable greenhouse gas reductions; (2) enable greenhouse gas mitigation markets to develop and offer secure contracts for commercial developers of verifiable low-carbon bioenergy and bioproducts; (3) support innovation in biomass utilisation value chains; and (4) continue long-term, strategic R&D and education for positive environmental, economic

Anthropogenic activities increase the contributions of inland waters to global greenhouse gas (GHG; CO2, CH4, and N2O) budgets, yet the mechanisms driving these increases are still not well constrained. In this study, we quantified year-long GHG concentrations, fluxes, and water physico-chemical variables from 28 sites contrasted by land use across five headwater catchments in Germany. Based on linear mixed-effects models, we showed that land use was more significant than seasonality in controlling the intra-annual variability of the GHGs. Streams in agriculture-dominated catchments or with wastewater inflows had up to 10 times higher daily CO2, CH4, and N2O emissions and were also more temporally variable (CV > 55 %) than forested streams. Our findings also suggested that nutrient, labile carbon, and dissolved GHG inputs from the agricultural and settlement areas may have supported these hotspots and hot-moments of fluvial GHG emissions. Overall, the annual emission from anthropogenic-influenced streams in CO2 equivalents was up to 20 times higher (∼ 71 kg CO2 m−2 yr−1) than from natural streams (∼ 3 kg CO2 m−2 yr−1), with CO2 accounting for up to 81 % of these annual emissions, while N2O and CH4 accounted for up to 18 % and 7 %, respectively. The positive influence of anthropogenic activities on fluvial GHG emissions also resulted in a breakdown of the expected declining trends of fluvial GHG emissions with stream size. Therefore, future studies should focus on anthropogenically perturbed streams, as their GHG emissions are much more variable in space and time and can potentially introduce the largest uncertainties to fluvial GHG estimates.

Although global- and catchment-scale hydrological models are often shown to accurately simulate long-term runoff time-series, far less is known about their suitability for capturing hydrological extremes, such as droughts. Here we evaluated simulations of hydrological droughts from nine catchment scale hydrological models (CHMs) and eight global scale hydrological models (GHMs) for eight large catchments: Upper Amazon, Lena, Upper Mississippi, Upper Niger, Rhine, Tagus, Upper Yangtze and Upper Yellow. The simulations were conducted within the framework of phase 2a of the Inter-Sectoral Impact Model Intercomparison Project (ISIMIP2a). We evaluated the ability of the CHMs, GHMs and their respective ensemble means (Ens-CHM and Ens-GHM) to simulate observed hydrological droughts of at least one month duration, over 31 years (1971–2001). Hydrological drought events were identified from runoff-deficits and the Standardised Runoff Index (SRI). In all catchments, the CHMs performed relatively better than the GHMs, for simulating monthly runoff-deficits. The number of drought events identified under different drought categories (i.e. SRI values of -1 to -1.49, -1.5 to -1.99, and ≤-2) varied significantly between models. All the models, as well as the two ensemble means, have limited abilities to accurately simulate drought events in all eight catchments, in terms of their occurrence and magnitude. Overall, there are opportunities to improve both CHMs and GHMs for better characterisation of hydrological droughts.

Accurate quantification of landscape soil greenhouse gas (GHG) exchange from chamber measurements is challenging due to the high spatial-temporal variability of fluxes, which results in large uncertainties in upscaled regional and global flux estimates. We quantified landscape-scale (6 km2 in central Germany) soil/ecosystem respiration (SR/ER-CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes at stratified sites with contrasting landscape characteristics using the fast-box chamber technique. We assessed the influence of land use (forest, arable, and grassland), seasonality (spring, summer, and autumn), soil types, and slope on the fluxes. We also evaluated the number of chamber measurement locations required to estimate landscape fluxes within globally significant uncertainty thresholds. The GHG fluxes were strongly influenced by seasonality and land use rather than soil type and slope. The number of chamber measurement locations required for robust landscape-scale flux estimates depended on the magnitude of fluxes, which varied with season, land use, and GHG type. Significant N2O-N flux uncertainties greater than the global mean flux (0.67 kg ha−1 yr−1) occurred if landscape measurements were done at <4 and <22 chamber locations (per km2) in forest and arable ecosystems, respectively, in summer. For CO2 and CH4 fluxes, uncertainties greater than the global median CO2-C flux (7,500 kg ha−1 yr−1) and the global mean forest CH4-C uptake rate (2.81 kg ha−1 yr−1) occurred at <2 forest and <6 arable chamber locations. This finding suggests that more chamber measurement locations are required to assess landscape-scale N2O fluxes than CO2 and CH4, based on these GHG-specific uncertainty thresholds.

Agricultural catchments in the tropics often generate high concentrations of suspended sediments following the conversion of natural ecosystems. The eroded fine particles are generally enriched with carbon (TC)and nutrients (TN and TP) originating from the topsoil of agricultural land. Sediment-associated TC, TN and TP are an important loss to the terrestrial ecosystem and tightly connected to an increase in riverine particulate TC and nutrient export. Soil nutrient depletion can limit crop growth and yields, whereas an excess of nutrients in streams can cause eutrophication in freshwater systems. Streams in East Africa, with widespread land conversion from forests to agriculture, are expected to receive high loads of sediment-associated TC, TN and TP. In this study, we assess the effect of land use on particulate TC, TN and TP concentrations. Suspended sediments (time-integrated, manual-event-based and automatic-event-based sediment samples) were analysed for TC, TN and TP concentrations collected at the outlet of a natural montane forest (35.9), a tea-tree plantation (33.3) and a smallholder agriculture (27.2 km2) catchment in western Kenya during a wet sampling period in 2018 and a drier sampling period in 2019. Particulate TC, TN and TP concentrations were up to 3-fold higher (p < 0:05) in the natural forest catchment compared to fertilized agricultural catchments. However, because of higher sediment loads from the smallholder agriculture catchment, the total sediment-associated loads of TC, TN and TP were higher compared to the natural forest and tea-tree plantation catchment. The higher C V N ratios in the natural forest suggest that the particulate nutrients are of organic origin due to tighter nutrient cycles, whereas lower ratios in both agricultural catchments suggest a mixture of mineral and organic sediment sources. Catchments are complex systems, which require regular monitoring of hydro-chemical parameters in space and time to provide comprehensive datasets. These are needed to characterize catchment behavior on a local level, make future projections based on models, implement mitigation measures and meet policy targets. However, many developing countries lack a good infrastructure for hydrological monitoring since its establishment is costly and the required resources are often not available. To overcome such challenges in data scarce regions like Kenya, a participatory citizen science approach can be a promising strategy for monitoring water resources. This study evaluates the potential of using a contributory citizen science approach to explore spatiotemporal turbidity and suspended sediment dynamics in the Sondu-Miriu river basin, western Kenya. A group of 19 citizen scientists was trained to monitor turbidity using turbidity tubes and water levels with water level gauges in six nested subcatchments of the Sondu-Miriu river basin. Over the course of the project, a total of 37 citizen scientists participated and contributed to the overall dataset of turbidity. The sampling effort and data contribution varied from year to year and among participants with the majority of the data (72%) originating from 8 (22%) citizen scientists. Comparison between citizen-scientist collected suspended sediment data and measurements from automated stations showed high correlation (R2 > 0.9) which demonstrates that data collected by citizen scientists can be comparable to data collected using expensive monitoring equipment. However, there was reduced precision of the measurements of suspended sediment concentrations at low and high levels attributed largely to the detection limitations of the turbidity tubes and citizen scientists not capturing major sediment export events. Citizen science is gaining popularity as a way to engage people to participate in environmental projects. In addition to potential challenges regarding data quality and the choice of variables, a key factor in the success of participatory monitoring projects is the active participation of volunteers, the “citizen scientists.” To learn more about the motivation of citizen scientists to participate and their socio-economic background, a telephone survey was implemented with participants of a citizen science water level monitoring program in the Sondu-Miriu basin, western Kenya. We analyzed the data using descriptive statistics and random forest models to elucidate the characteristics of the participant population, underlying motivations, and the challenges and opportunities to develop recommendations for sustainable community-based water monitoring programs. As citizen scientists who engaged long-term were 30–49 years old, had primary or secondary school education and passed by the monitoring station frequently, targeting sensitization activities at people with such background could increase participation in community-based water monitoring. Sensitization meetings were key in engaging long-term volunteers, but participants indicated that continued feedback through education and communication of the project findings is required to keep volunteers motivated. The use of cellphone credit to submit data was identified as challenge for participation, highlighting the need for data submission methods that do not incur costs for the participants. Greater volunteer support could also be achieved by active involvement of the members of Water Resource Users Associations, since membership increased the likelihood of continuous engagement in water monitoring under the participants.
