In this study I analyze and describe the contents of recommended band repertoire lists to explore which composers' music is recommended and arranged for band most often. Fourteen repertoire lists provided by state-level music associations and independent publishers were included in the analysis, comprising a total of 32,267 entries. Previous research on band repertoire and programming has tended to focus on composers of advanced literature and has subsequently overlooked the contributions of composers who write music primarily intended for educational purposes. The 25 most recommended composers from each graded difficulty level of literature from 1 to 5+ and overall are reported. The findings provide recognition of composers' contributions to music education and invite further discussions about how the quality, value, and difficulty of repertoire is determined.

This study explored the responsibilities and experiences of three collegiate drum majors as student leaders of a marching band at a major university. Marching band continues to be a prevalent and highly visible aspect of music education in the United States. The preparation and utilization of student leaders in music remains common, but little research examining the actual experiences of student leaders in music has been conducted. As we continue to recruit student leaders for these positions, it may be of use to understand, from the student leader perspective, the challenges and perceived responsibilities associated with these positions. The participants in this study identified three distinct responsibilities of a drum major: (a) drum major as director's musical advocate; (b) drum major as director's political advocate; and (c) bridging the gap between students and staff. Additionally, the participants identified two concerns related to their experiences as student leaders in comparison to their band member peers: (a) social negotiations; and (b) defining an identity.

The purpose of this study was to investigate participation in a Facebook social media community known as Band Director's Group (BDG) through examination of members' demographic profiles, self-reported usage behaviors, and perceptions about how group activity satisfies their professional development needs. Respondents to an online survey (n = 336) reported near-daily interaction with BDG, with a notable trend toward lower average levels of contributing new content compared with relatively higher levels of passive and semipassive engagement such as reading and "liking" posts of other users.

Wind band has a deep and long-lasting connection to folk-song sources. Societal expectations around music choices and sources are changing, including calls to diversify repertoire and eliminate traditional songs that include offensive language and stereotypes. Concerns about music usage in relation to cultural appropriation are also being amplified. How will teachers, composers, and publishers of band music respond to these calls for change? Although the influence of the school music teacher in a student's decision to pursue an undergraduate music education degree is well documented, little is known about the contribution that state music education associations (MEAs) may make toward a student's decision to major in a music-related field. Data do suggest that students' opinions about various careers are often formed at an early age and frequently remain consistent from middle school through high school. Research emphasizes identifying prospective educators earlier, encouraging students to consider music teaching as a career, and providing experiences to help students make knowledgeable decisions for career choice and responsibilities in the profession. Specifically, the Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE) has recommended that identifying and cultivating practices that help to guide future music educators is a responsibility to be shared by both practitioners and researchers. This article offers a look at three programs sponsored by state music education associations in Illinois, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, that provide high school students with opportunities to learn about a career in music education prior to their undergraduate experience.

In this descriptive study, we examined the influences and experiences motivating students to enter college-level music schools as reported by a population of precollegiate students auditioning (but not yet accepted) to music education degree programs. As a follow-up to a published pilot study, this research was designed to quantify the various experiences respondents had as part of their precollege school and community programs that related to teaching and music. Results indicate a strong connection between respondents' primary musical background and future teaching interest. The top three influential experiences were related to high school ensemble membership (band, choir, orchestra), and the most influential group of individuals in the decision to become a music educator were high school ensemble directors. Respondents from all four primary background groups (band, choir, orchestra, and general or other) rated private lesson teaching as their second strongest future teaching interest, just behind teaching at the high school level in their primary background. The methodology for hydrodynamic characterization of a very large water tunnel is described. Results are presented for the U. S. Navy William B. Morgan Large Cavitation Channel in Memphis, Tennessee, the world's largest water tunnel. Three key characteristics of tunnel velocity were measured: temporal stability, spatial uniformity, and turbulence. The velocity stability at a single point for run times greater than 2 h was measured as [+ or -] 0.15% at the 95% confidence level for velocities from 0.5 to 18 m/s(1.6-59 ft/s). The spatial nonuniformity for the axial velocity component was [+ or -] 0.34 to [+ or -] 0.60% for velocities from 3 to 16 m/s(9.8-52 ft/s). The relative turbulence intensity was measured as 0.2-0.5% depending on tunnel velocity. [DOI: 10.1115/1.2060740]

When a submarine executes a high-speed turn, the sail experiences a crossflow velocity component, creating a vortex at the sail tip. The flowfield induced by the vortex creates higher pressures on the hull deck and lower pressures on the keel, leading to a nose-up pitching moment. Tests to examine such flows were conducted in the U.S. Navy's William B. Morgan Large Cavitation Channel in Memphis, Tennessee. A submarine model of 6.92-m length was tested at drift angles of 0, 5, and 9.5 deg, with the sail on and off, and at speeds up to 14.9 m/s. Pressure distributions and laser Doppler velocimeter surveys were obtained at two axial locations. Forces and moments were measured using an internal force balance. The pressure distributions were integrated to obtain section force coefficients, and the velocity data were used to estimate the vortex circulation. The pressure distributions were consistent with the hypothesized mechanism by which the vortex created the nose-up pitching moment. The pitching moment and sectional force coefficients demonstrated the nonlinear variations with drift angle predicted by theory. The circulation values were consistently somewhat higher than those obtained by other researchers.

Forward time population genetics is powerful technique to identify gene underlying traits or mutations of interest. In this work, population genetics simulators Mendel’s Accountant and Nemo are integrated in a cloud computing environment. Wolbachia was used for platform testing.
