The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to survey star formation over cosmological time scales using intensity mapping in the 420 - 540 GHz frequency range. EXCLAIM uses a fully cryogenic telescope coupled to six on-chip spectrometers featuring kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs) to achieve high sensitivity, allowing for fast integration in dark atmospheric windows. The telescope receiver is cooled to $\approx$ 1.7 K by immersion in a superfluid helium bath and enclosed in a superfluid-tight shell with a meta-material anti-reflection coated silicon window. In addition to the optics and the spectrometer package, the receiver contains the magnetic shielding, the cryogenic segment of the spectrometer readout, and the sub-Kelvin cooling system. A three-stage continuous adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator (CADR) keeps the detectors at 100 mK while a $^4$He sorption cooler provides a 900 mK thermal intercept for mechanical suspensions and coaxial cables. We consider the potential of future microwave spectrometers akin to PIXIE in light of the sky-averaged global signal expected from the total intensity of extragalactic carbon monoxide (CO) and ionized carbon ([CII]) line emission. We start from models originally developed for forecasts of line-intensity mapping (LIM) observations targeting the same line emission at specific redshifts, extrapolating them across all of cosmic time. We then calculate Fisher forecasts for uncertainties on parameters describing relic spectral deviations, the CO/[CII] global signal, and a range of other Galactic and extragalactic foregrounds considered in previous work. We find that the measurement of the CO/[CII] global signal with a future CMB spectrometer presents an exciting opportunity to constrain the evolution of metallicity and molecular gas in galaxies across cosmic time. From PIXIE to its enhanced version, SuperPIXIE, microwave spectrometers would have the fundamental sensitivity to constrain the redshift evolution of average kinetic temperature and cosmic molecular gas density at a level of 10% to 1%, respectively. Taking a spectral distortion-centric perspective, when combined with other foregrounds, sky-averaged CO/[CII] emission can mimic $\mu$- and to a lesser extent $y$-type distortions. Under fiducial parameters, marginalising over the CO/[CII] model parameters increases the error on $\mu$ by $\simeq86$%, and the error on $y$ by $\simeq10$%. Incorporating information from planned CO LIM surveys can recover some of this loss in precision. Future work should deploy a more general treatment of the microwave sky to quantify in more detail the potential synergies between PIXIE-like and CO LIM experiments, which complement each other strongly in breadth versus depth, and ways to optimise both spectrometer and LIM surveys to improve foreground cleaning and maximise the science return for each., Comment: 18 pages + bibliography, 22 pages total; 16 figures, 4 tables; v2 reflects the version accepted for publication in PRD

We present a new upper limit on the cosmic molecular gas density at $z=2.4-3.4$ obtained using the first year of observations from the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP). COMAP data cubes are stacked on the 3D positions of 243 quasars selected from the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS) catalog, yielding a 95% upper limit for flux from CO(1-0) line emission of 0.129 Jy km/s. Depending on the balance of the emission between the quasar host and its environment, this value can be interpreted as an average CO line luminosity $L'_\mathrm{CO}$ of eBOSS quasars of $\leq 1.26\times10^{11}$ K km pc$^2$ s$^{-1}$, or an average molecular gas density $\rho_\mathrm{H_2}$ in regions of the universe containing a quasar of $\leq 1.52\times10^8$ M$_\odot$ cMpc$^{-3}$. The $L'_\mathrm{CO}$ upper limit falls among CO line luminosities obtained from individually-targeted quasars in the COMAP redshift range, and the $\rho_\mathrm{H_2}$ value is comparable to upper limits obtained from other Line Intensity Mapping (LIM) surveys and their joint analyses. Further, we forecast the values obtainable with the COMAP/eBOSS stack after the full 5-year COMAP Pathfinder survey. We predict that a detection is probable with this method, depending on the CO properties of the quasar sample. Based on the achieved sensitivity, we believe that this technique of stacking LIM data on the positions of traditional galaxy or quasar catalogs is extremely promising, both as a technique for investigating large galaxy catalogs efficiently at high redshift and as a technique for bolstering the sensitivity of LIM experiments, even with a fraction of their total expected survey data., Comment: 26 pages, 22 figures; Version 2 is as accepted by ApJ

Line-intensity mapping (LIM) is a promising technique to constrain the global distribution of galaxy properties. To combine LIM experiments probing different tracers with traditional galaxy surveys and fully exploit the scientific potential of these observations, it is necessary to have a physically motivated modeling framework. As part of developing such a framework, in this work we introduce and model the conditional galaxy property distribution (CGPD), i.e. the distribution of galaxy properties conditioned on the host halo mass and redshift. We consider five galaxy properties, including the galaxy stellar mass, molecular gas mass, galaxy radius, gas phase metallicity and star formation rate (SFR), which are important for predicting the emission lines of interest. The CGPD represents the full distribution of galaxies in the five dimensional property space; many important galaxy distribution functions and scaling relations, such as the stellar mass function and SFR main sequence, can be derived from integrating and projecting it. We utilize two different kinds of cosmological galaxy simulations, a semi-analytic model and the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamic simulation, to characterize the CGPD and explore how well it can be represented using a Gaussian mixture model (GMM). We find that with just a few ($\sim 3$) Gaussian components, a GMM can describe the CGPD of the simulated galaxies to high accuracy for both simulations. We introduce a novel unbiased, cross-correlation estimator for the one-point statistics of cosmological random fields. One-point statistics are a useful tool for analysis of highly non-Gaussian density fields, while cross-correlations provide a powerful method for combining information from pairs of fields and separating them from noise and systematics. We derive a new Deconvolved Distribution Estimator that combines the useful properties of these two methods into one statistic. Using two example models of a toy Gaussian random field and a line intensity mapping survey, we demonstrate these properties quantitatively and show that the DDE can be used for inference. This new estimator can be applied to any pair of overlapping, non-Gaussian cosmological observations, including large-scale structure, the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, weak lensing, and many others., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, for submission to MNRAS

We present the deconvolved distribution estimator (DDE), an extension of the voxel intensity distribution (VID), in the context of future observations proposed as part of the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP). The DDE exploits the fact that the observed VID is a convolution of correlated signal intensity distributions and uncorrelated noise or interloper intensity distributions. By deconvolving the individual VID of two observables away from their joint VID in a Fourier-space operation, the DDE suppresses sensitivity to interloper emission while maintaining sensitivity to correlated components. The DDE thus improves upon the VID by reducing the relative influence of uncorrelated noise and interloper biases, which is useful in the context of COMAP observations that observe different rotational transitions of CO from the same comoving volume in different observing frequency bands. Fisher forecasts suggest that the theoretical sensitivity in the DDE allows significant improvements in constraining power compared to either the cross power spectrum or the individual VID data, and matches the constraining power of the combination of all other one- and two-point summary statistics. The EXperiment for Cryogenic Large-Aperture Intensity Mapping (EXCLAIM) is a balloon-borne cryogenic telescope that will survey the spectrum of diffuse emission from both the Milky Way and the cosmic web to probe star formation, the interstellar medium, and galaxy evolution across cosmic time. Line intensity mapping is rapidly gaining prominence as a tool to understand galaxy evolution and cosmology at high redshift. However, the standard power spectrum analysis for these surveys suffers from a tight degeneracy between the overall mean line intensity and the bias of the emitting galaxies. We outline a new formalism for the Voxel Intensity Distribution (VID), a one-point statistic which is known to contain information beyond the power spectrum. We perform a tomographic cross-correlation analysis of archival FIRAS data and the BOSS galaxy redshift survey to constrain the amplitude of [CII] $^2P_{3/2}\rightarrow$ $^2P_{1/2}$ fine structure emission. Our analysis employs spherical harmonic tomography (SHT), which is based on the angular cross-power spectrum between FIRAS maps and BOSS galaxy over-densities at each pair of redshift bins, over a redshift range of $0.24

We introduce COMAP-EoR, the next generation of the Carbon Monoxide Mapping Array Project aimed at extending CO intensity mapping to the Epoch of Reionization. COMAP-EoR supplements the existing 30 GHz COMAP Pathfinder with two additional 30 GHz instruments and a new 16 GHz receiver. This combination of frequencies will be able to simultaneously map CO(1--0) and CO(2--1) at reionization redshifts ($z\sim5-8$) in addition to providing a significant boost to the $z\sim3$ sensitivity of the Pathfinder. We examine a set of existing models of the EoR CO signal, and find power spectra spanning several orders of magnitude, highlighting our extreme ignorance about this period of cosmic history and the value of the COMAP-EoR measurement. We carry out the most detailed forecast to date of an intensity mapping cross-correlation, and find that five out of the six models we consider yield signal to noise ratios (S/N) $\gtrsim20$ for COMAP-EoR, with the brightest reaching a S/N above 400. We show that, for these models, COMAP-EoR can make a detailed measurement of the cosmic molecular gas history from $z\sim2-8$, as well as probe the population of faint, star-forming galaxies predicted by these models to be undetectable by traditional surveys. We show that, for the single model that does not predict numerous faint emitters, a COMAP-EoR-type measurement is required to rule out their existence. We present the current state of models for the $z\sim3$ carbon monoxide (CO) line-intensity signal targeted by the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP) Pathfinder in the context of its early science results. Our fiducial model, relating dark matter halo properties to CO luminosities, informs parameter priors with empirical models of the galaxy-halo connection and previous CO(1-0) observations. The Pathfinder early science data spanning wavenumbers $k=0.051$-$0.62\,$Mpc$^{-1}$ represent the first direct 3D constraint on the clustering component of the CO(1-0) power spectrum. Our 95% upper limit on the redshift-space clustering amplitude $A_{\rm clust}\lesssim70\,\mu$K$^2$ greatly improves on the indirect upper limit of $420\,\mu$K$^2$ reported from the CO Power Spectrum Survey (COPSS) measurement at $k\sim1\,$Mpc$^{-1}$. The COMAP limit excludes a subset of models from previous literature, and constrains interpretation of the COPSS results, demonstrating the complementary nature of COMAP and interferometric CO surveys. Using line bias expectations from our priors, we also constrain the squared mean line intensity-bias product, $\langle{Tb}\rangle^2\lesssim50\,\mu$K$^2$, and the cosmic molecular gas density, $\rho_\text{H2}<2.5\times10^8\,M_\odot\,$Mpc$^{-3}$ (95% upper limits). Based on early instrument performance and our current CO signal estimates, we forecast that the five-year Pathfinder campaign will detect the CO power spectrum with overall signal-to-noise of 9-17. We present early results from the COMAP Galactic Plane Survey conducted between June 2019 and April 2021, spanning $20^\circ<\ell<40^\circ$ in Galactic longitude and $|b|<1.\!\!^{\circ}5$ in Galactic latitude with an angular resolution of $4.5^{\prime}$. The full survey will span $\ell \sim 20^{\circ}$- $220^{\circ}$ and will be the first large-scale radio continuum survey at $30$ GHz with sub-degree resolution. We present initial results from the first part of the survey, including diffuse emission and spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of HII regions and supernova remnants. Using low and high frequency surveys to constrain free-free and thermal dust emission contributions, we find evidence of excess flux density at $30\,$GHz in six regions that we interpret as anomalous microwave emission. Furthermore we model UCHII contributions using data from the $5\,$GHz CORNISH catalogue and reject this as the cause of the $30\,$GHz excess. Six known supernova remnants (SNR) are detected at $30\,$GHz, and we measure spectral indices consistent with the literature or show evidence of steepening. The flux density of the SNR W44 at $30\,$GHz is consistent with a power-law extrapolation from lower frequencies with no indication of spectral steepening in contrast with recent results from the Sardinia Radio Telescope. We also extract five hydrogen radio recombination lines to map the warm ionized gas, which can be used to estimate electron temperatures or to constrain continuum free-free emission. We present the power spectrum methodology used for the first-season COMAP analysis, and assess the quality of the current data set. The main results are derived through the Feed-feed Pseudo-Cross-Spectrum (FPXS) method, which is a robust estimator with respect to both noise modeling errors and experimental systematics. We use effective transfer functions to take into account the effects of instrumental beam smoothing and various filter operations applied during the low-level data processing. The power spectra estimated in this way have allowed us to identify a systematic error associated with one of our two scanning strategies, believed to be due to residual ground or atmospheric contamination. We omit these data from our analysis and no longer use this scanning technique for observations. We present the power spectra from our first season of observing and demonstrate that the uncertainties are integrating as expected for uncorrelated noise, with any residual systematics suppressed to a level below the noise. Using the FPXS method, and combining data on scales $k=0.051-0.62 \,\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ we estimate $P_\mathrm{CO}(k) = -2.7 \pm 1.7 \times 10^4\mu\textrm{K}^2\mathrm{Mpc}^3$, the first direct 3D constraint on the clustering component of the CO(1-0) power spectrum in the literature., Comment: Paper 4 of 7 in series. 18 pages, 11 figures, as accepted in ApJ

We describe the first season COMAP analysis pipeline that converts raw detector readouts to calibrated sky maps. This pipeline implements four main steps: gain calibration, filtering, data selection, and map-making. Absolute gain calibration relies on a combination of instrumental and astrophysical sources, while relative gain calibration exploits real-time total-power variations. High efficiency filtering is achieved through spectroscopic common-mode rejection within and across receivers, resulting in nearly uncorrelated white noise within single-frequency channels. Consequently, near-optimal but biased maps are produced by binning the filtered time stream into pixelized maps; the corresponding signal bias transfer function is estimated through simulations. Data selection is performed automatically through a series of goodness-of-fit statistics, including $\chi^2$ and multi-scale correlation tests. Applying this pipeline to the first-season COMAP data, we produce a dataset with very low levels of correlated noise. We find that one of our two scanning strategies (the Lissajous type) is sensitive to residual instrumental systematics. As a result, we no longer use this type of scan and exclude data taken this way from our Season 1 power spectrum estimates. We perform a careful analysis of our data processing and observing efficiencies and take account of planned improvements to estimate our future performance. The CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP) aims to use line intensity mapping of carbon monoxide (CO) to trace the distribution and global properties of galaxies over cosmic time, back to the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). To validate the technologies and techniques needed for this goal, a Pathfinder instrument has been constructed and fielded. Sensitive to CO(1-0) emission from $z=2.4$-$3.4$ and a fainter contribution from CO(2-1) at $z=6$-8, the Pathfinder is surveying $12$ deg$^2$ in a 5-year observing campaign to detect the CO signal from $z\sim3$. Using data from the first 13 months of observing, we estimate $P_\mathrm{CO}(k) = -2.7 \pm 1.7 \times 10^4\mu\mathrm{K}^2 \mathrm{Mpc}^3$ on scales $k=0.051-0.62 \mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ - the first direct 3D constraint on the clustering component of the CO(1-0) power spectrum. Based on these observations alone, we obtain a constraint on the amplitude of the clustering component (the squared mean CO line temperature-bias product) of $\langle Tb\rangle^2<49$ $\mu$K$^2$ - nearly an order-of-magnitude improvement on the previous best measurement. These constraints allow us to rule out two models from the literature. We forecast a detection of the power spectrum after 5 years with signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) 9-17. Cross-correlation with an overlapping galaxy survey will yield a detection of the CO-galaxy power spectrum with S/N of 19. We are also conducting a 30 GHz survey of the Galactic plane and present a preliminary map. Line intensity mapping (LIM) is a new technique for tracing the global properties of galaxies over cosmic time. Detection of the very faint signals from redshifted carbon monoxide (CO), a tracer of star formation, pushes the limits of what is feasible with a total-power instrument. The CO Mapping Project (COMAP) Pathfinder is a first-generation instrument aiming to prove the concept and develop the technology for future experiments, as well as delivering early science products. With 19 receiver channels in a hexagonal focal plane arrangement on a 10.4 m antenna, and an instantaneous 26-34 GHz frequency range with 2 MHz resolution, it is ideally suited to measuring CO($J$=1-0) from $z\sim3$. In this paper we discuss strategies for designing and building the Pathfinder and the challenges that were encountered. The design of the instrument prioritized LIM requirements over those of ancillary science. After a couple of years of operation, the instrument is well understood, and the first year of data is already yielding useful science results. Line Intensity Mapping (LIM) offers a novel avenue to observe and characterize our universe. LIM data of CO spectral lines are becoming available, such as those obtained by the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP). COMAP data can be used to probe the molecular gas content of the universe from the last stages of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) ($z < 8.0$) to $z \sim 2.5$. In this work, we examine the prospects for deriving voxel-level statistical constraints on high-redshift galaxies from COMAP data by considering the additional information available from observations of LAEs galaxies using the Visible Integral-Field Replicable Unit Spectrograph (VIRUS) on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET). We post-process the IllustrisTNG300 galaxy-formation simulation with a set of prescriptions to consistently determine CO and Ly$\alpha$ line luminosities. The different line prescriptions span the uncertainty in the CO line luminosity according to current observations by the VLA high-z CO surveys and set the Ly$\alpha$ emission to be compatible with observational LAE luminosity functions. We produce mock observations for the two surveys over a $(300\, {\rm Mpc})^3$ volume. These are then used to formulate and test methodologies for data analysis and to predict COMAP constraints on CO emission. We use combinations of masking, stacking, voxel intensity distribution (VID), and other statistics. We find that in combination with VIRUS/HET, a voxel-level analysis of the COMAP Pathfinder survey can detect and characterize the CO signal from $z\sim3$ and improve current constraints on the $z\sim6$ signal, identify individual voxels with bright CO(1-0) emission at $z\sim3$ and probe the redshift evolution of the CO emission. Sub-millimeter emission lines produced by the interstellar medium (ISM) are strong tracers of star formation and are some of the main targets of line intensity mapping (LIM) surveys. In this work we present an empirical multi-line emission model that simultaneously covers the mean, scatter, and correlations of [CII], CO J=1-0 to J=5-4, and [CI] lines in redshift range $1\leq z\leq9$. We assume the galaxy ISM line emission luminosity versus halo mass relations can be described by double power laws with redshift-dependent log normal scatter. The model parameters are then derived by fitting to the state of the art semi-analytic simulation results that have successfully reproduced multiple sub-millimeter line observations at $0\leq z\lesssim6$. We cross check the line emission statistics predicted by the semi-analytic simulation and our empirical model, finding that at $z\geq1$ our model reproduces the simulated line intensities with fractional error less than about 10%. The fractional difference is less than 25% for the power spectra. The Millimeter-wave Intensity Mapping Experiment (mmIME) recently reported a detection of excess spatial fluctuations at a wavelength of 3 mm, which can be attributed to unresolved emission of several CO rotational transitions between $z\sim1-5$. We study the implications of this data for the high-redshift interstellar medium using a suite of state-of-the-art semianalytic simulations which have successfully reproduced many other sub-millimeter line observations across the relevant redshift range. We find that the semianalytic predictions are mildly in tension with the mmIME result, with a predicted CO power $\sim3.5\sigma$ below what was observed. We explore some simple modifications to the models which could resolve this tension. Increasing the molecular gas abundance at the relevant redshifts to $\sim10^8\ M_\odot\ \rm{Mpc}^{-3}$, a value well above that obtained from directly imaged sources, would resolve the discrepancy, as would assuming a CO-$H_2$ conversion factor $\alpha_{\rm{CO}}$ of $\sim1.5\ M_{\odot}$ K$^{-1}$ $(\rm{km}/\rm{s})^{-1}$ pc$^{2}$, a value somewhat lower than is commonly assumed. We go on to demonstrate that these conclusions are quite sensitive to the detailed assumptions of our simulations, highlighting the need for more careful modeling efforts as more intensity mapping data become available., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, submitted to ApJ

Line-intensity mapping observations will find fluctuations of integrated line emission are attenuated by varying degrees at small scales due to the width of the line emission profiles. This attenuation may significantly impact estimates of astrophysical or cosmological quantities derived from measurements. We consider a theoretical treatment of the effect of line broadening on both the clustering and shot-noise components of the power spectrum of a generic line-intensity power spectrum using a halo model. We then consider possible simplifications to allow easier application in analysis, particularly in the context of inferences that require numerous, repeated, fast computations of model line-intensity signals across a large parameter space. For the CO Mapping Array Project (COMAP) and the CO(1-0) line-intensity field at $z\sim3$ serving as our primary case study, we expect a $\sim10\%$ attenuation of the spherically averaged power spectrum on average at relevant scales of $k\approx0.2$-$0.3$ Mpc$^{-1}$, compared to $\sim25\%$ for the interferometric Millimetre-wave Intensity Mapping Experiment (mmIME) targeting shot noise from CO lines at $z\sim1$-$5$ at scales of $k\gtrsim1$ Mpc$^{-1}$. We also consider the nature and amplitude of errors introduced by simplified treatments of line broadening, and find that while an approximation using a single effective velocity scale is sufficient for spherically-averaged power spectra, a more careful treatment is necessary when considering other statistics such as higher multipoles of the anisotropic power spectrum or the voxel intensity distribution., Comment: 24 pages + appendix and bibliography (33 pages total), 16 figures, 2 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

Hydrogen deuteride (HD) is prevalent in a wide variety of astrophysical environments, and measuring its large-scale distribution at different epochs can in principle provide information about the properties of these environments. In this paper, we explore the prospects for accessing this distribution using line intensity mapping of emission from the lowest rotational transition in HD, focusing on observations of the epoch of reionization ($z\sim6-10$) and earlier. We find the signal from the epoch of reionization to be strongest most promising, through cross-correlations within existing [CII] intensity mapping surveys. While the signal we predict is out of reach for current-generation projects, planned future improvements should be able to detect reionization-era HD without any additional observations, and would help to constrain the properties of the star-forming galaxies thought to play a key role in reionization. We also investigate several avenues for measuring HD during "cosmic dawn" ($z\sim10-30$), a period in which HD could provide one of the only complementary observables to 21$\,$cm intensity maps. We conclude that existing and planned facilities are poorly matched to the specifications desirable for a significant detection, though such a measurement may be achievable with sustained future effort. Finally, we explain why HD intensity mapping of the intergalactic medium during the cosmic dark ages ($z\gtrsim 30$) appears to be out of reach of any conceivable experiment., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

Sub-millimeter emission lines are important tracers of the cold gas and ionized environments of galaxies and are the targets for future line intensity mapping surveys. Physics-based simulations that predict multiple emission lines arising from different phases of the interstellar medium are crucial for constraining the global physical conditions of galaxies with upcoming LIM observations. In this work we present a general framework for creating multitracer mock sub-millimeter line intensity maps based on physically grounded galaxy formation and sub-mm line emission models. We simulate a mock lightcone of 2 deg$^2$ over a redshift range $0\leq z\leq10$, comprising discrete galaxies and galaxy CII, CO, CI emission. We present simulated line intensity maps for two fiducial surveys with resolution and observational frequency windows representative of COMAP and EXCLAIM. We show that the star formation rate and line emission scaling relations predicted by our simulation significantly differ at low halo masses from widely used empirical relations, which are often calibrated to observations of luminous galaxies at lower redshifts. We show that these differences lead to significant changes in key summary statistics used in intensity mapping, such as the one point intensity probability density function and the power spectrum. It will be critical to use more realistic and complex models to forecast the ability of future line intensity mapping surveys to measure observables such as the cosmic star formation rate density., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) is a key probe of the origins of primordial fluctuations in the early universe. It has been shown that multi-tracer measurements of large-scale structure can produce high-precision measurements of PNG. Future line intensity mapping surveys are well-suited to these measurements owing to their ability to rapidly survey large volumes and access the large scales at which PNG becomes important. In this paper, we explore for the first time how multi-tracer PNG measurements with intensity mapping surveys depend on the sub-galactic scale physics which drives line emission. We consider an example cross-correlation between CO maps, and quantify the impact varying the astrophysical model has on $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ measurements. We find a non-trivial coupling between horizon-scale PNG measurements and the molecular cloud-scale interstellar medium that can have order unity effects on $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ constraints with near-future experimental sensitivities. We discuss how these effects depend on noise level and survey design. We further find that the cross-correlation shot noise, an effect nearly unique to intensity mapping measurements, can play an important role in multi-tracer analyses and should not be neglected., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures, updated to match version accepted by PRD

This paper discusses the science case for a sensitive spectro-polarimetric survey of the microwave sky. Such a survey would provide a tomographic and dynamic census of the three-dimensional distribution of hot gas, velocity flows, early metals, dust, and mass distribution in the entire Hubble volume, exploit CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropies down to fundamental limits, and track energy injection and absorption into the radiation background across cosmic times by measuring spectral distortions of the CMB blackbody emission. In addition to its exceptional capability for cosmology and fundamental physics, such a survey would provide an unprecedented view of microwave emissions at sub-arcminute to few-arcminute angular resolution in hundreds of frequency channels, a data set that would be of immense legacy value for many branches of astrophysics. We propose that this survey be carried-out with a large space mission featuring a broad-band polarised imager and a moderate resolution spectro-imager at the focus of a 3.5m aperture telescope actively cooled to about 8K, complemented with absolutely-calibrated Fourier Transform Spectrometer modules observing at degree-scale angular resolution in the 10-2000 GHz frequency range. Line-intensity mapping (LIM) of emission form star-forming galaxies can be used to measure the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale as far back as the epoch of reionization. This provides a standard cosmic ruler to constrain the expansion rate of the Universe at redshifts which cannot be directly probed otherwise. In light of growing tension between measurements of the current expansion rate using the local distance ladder and those inferred from the cosmic microwave background, extending the constraints on the expansion history to bridge between the late and early Universe is of paramount importance. Using a newly derived methodology to robustly extract cosmological information from LIM, which minimizes the inherent degeneracy with unknown astrophysics, we show that present and future experiments can gradually improve the measurement precision of the expansion rate history, ultimately reaching percent-level constraints on the BAO scale. Specifically, we provide detailed forecasts for the SPHEREx satellite, which will target the H$\alpha$ and Lyman-$\alpha$ lines, and for the ground-based COMAP instrument---as well as a future stage-3 experiment---that will target the CO rotational lines. Besides weighing in on the so-called Hubble tension, reliable LIM cosmic rulers can enable wide-ranging tests of dark matter, dark energy and modified gravity., Comment: 7 pages; 3 figures

Line-intensity mapping (LIM) provides a promising way to probe cosmology, reionization and galaxy evolution. However, its sensitivity to cosmology and astrophysics at the same time is also a nuisance. Here we develop a comprehensive framework for modelling the LIM power spectrum, which includes redshift space distortions and the Alcock-Paczynski effect. We then identify and isolate degeneracies with astrophysics so that they can be marginalized over. We study the gains of using the multipole expansion of the anisotropic power spectrum, providing an accurate analytic expression for their covariance, and find a 10%-60% increase in the precision of the baryon acoustic oscillation scale measurements when including the hexadecapole in the analysis. We discuss different observational strategies when targeting other cosmological parameters, such as the sum of neutrino masses or primordial non-Gaussianity, finding that fewer and wider bins are typically more optimal. Overall, our formalism facilitates an optimal extraction of cosmological constraints robust to astrophysics., Comment: 19 pages; 5 figures

21 cm intensity mapping has arisen as a powerful probe of the high-redshift universe, but its potential is limited by extremely bright foregrounds and high source confusion. In this Letter, we propose a new analysis which can help solve both problems. From the combination of an intensity map with an overlapping galaxy survey we construct a new one-point statistic which is unbiased by foregrounds and contains information left out of conventional analyses. Line intensity maps (LIMs) are in principle sensitive to a large amount of information about faint, distant galaxies which are invisible to conventional surveys. However, actually extracting that information from a confused, foreground-contaminated map can be challenging. In this work we present the first application of convolutional neural network (CNN) to directly determine the underlying luminosity function of a LIM, including a treatment of extragalactic foregrounds and instrumental noise. We apply the CNN to simulations of mock Carbon Monoxide (CO) line intensity maps similar to those which will be produced by the currently-active COMAP experiment. We evaluate the trained CNN on a number of noise scenarios in order to determine how robust the network predictions are for application to realistic data. We find that, in the ideal case where the mock data capture all of the features of the real data, the CNN performs comparably to or better than conventional analyses. However, the network's accuracy degrades considerably when tested on signals and systematics outside of those it was trained on. For both intensity mapping and cosmology as a whole, this motivates a broad-based study of whether simulated data can ever be generated with sufficient detail to realize the enormous potential of machine learning methods., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

Current models of galaxy formation require star formation in high-mass galaxies to be limited by poorly understood mechanisms of quasar feedback. Feedback processes can be studied by examining the molecular gas content of AGN hosts through the CO rotational ladder, but the complexity of these observations means that current data are limited to only extremely CO-bright objects. Upcoming CO intensity mapping experiments offer an opportunity for a less biased probe of quasar feedback. By correlating intensity maps with spectroscopic AGN surveys, we can obtain a measurement of the mean CO luminosity of a large population of quasars simultaneously. We show that experiments like COMAP, CCAT-prime, and CONCERTO have enough sensitivity to detect this cross-correlation if existing AGN observations are representative of the whole population, and to place interesting upper limits if they are not. Future surveys will be able to increase the precision of these measurements by orders of magnitude, allowing detailed studies of quasar properties across a wide range of cosmic history., Comment: 13 pages, 2 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are, as the name implies, short and intense pulses of radiation at wavelengths of roughly one metre. FRBs have extremely high brightness temperatures, which points to a coherent source of radiation. The energy of a single burst ranges from $10^{36}$ to $10^{39}$ erg. At the high end of the energy range, FRBs have enough energy to unbind an earth-sized planet, and even at the low end, there is enough energy to vaporise and unbind the atmosphere and the oceans. We therefore propose that FRBs are signatures of an artificial terraformer, capable of eradicating life on another planet, or even destroy the planet entirely. The necessary energy can be harvested from Wolf-Rayet stars with a Dyson sphere ($\sim 10^{38}$ erg s$^{-1}$) , and the radiation can be readily produced by astrophysical masers. We refer to this mechanism as Volatile Amplification of a Destructive Emission of Radiation (VADER). We use the observational information to constrain the properties of the apparatus. We speculate that the non-repeating FRBs are low-energy pulses used to exterminate life on a single planet, but leaving it otherwise intact, and that the stronger repeating FRB is part of an effort to destroy multiple objects in the same solar system, perhaps as a preventative measure against panspermia. In this picture, the persistent synchrotron source associated with the first repeating FRB arises from the energy harvesting process. Finally we propose that Oumuamua might have resulted from a destruction of a planet in this manner.

Line-Intensity Mapping is an emerging technique which promises new insights into the evolution of the Universe, from star formation at low redshifts to the epoch of reionization and cosmic dawn. It measures the integrated emission of atomic and molecular spectral lines from galaxies and the intergalactic medium over a broad range of frequencies, using instruments with aperture requirements that are greatly relaxed relative to surveys for single objects. A coordinated, comprehensive, multi-line intensity-mapping experimental effort can efficiently probe over 80% of the volume of the observable Universe - a feat beyond the reach of other methods. Line-intensity mapping will uniquely address a wide array of pressing mysteries in galaxy evolution, cosmology, and fundamental physics. The distances to fast radio bursts (FRBs) are crucial for understanding their underlying engine, and for their use as cosmological probes. In this paper, we provide three statistical estimates of the distance to ASKAP FRBs. First, we show that the number of events of similar luminosity in ASKAP does not scale as distance cubed, as one would expect, when directly using the observed dispersion measure (DM) to infer distance. Second, by comparing the average DMs of FRBs observed with different instruments, we estimated the average redshift of ASKAP FRBs to be $z\sim 0.01$ using CHIME and ASKAP, and $z\lesssim0.07$ using Parkes and ASKAP. Both values are much smaller than the upper limit $z\sim0.3$ estimated directly from the DM. Third, we cross-correlate the locations of the ASKAP FRBs with existing large-area redshift surveys, and see a 3$\sigma$ correlation with the 2MASS Redshift Survey and a 5$\sigma$ correlation with the HI Parkes All Sky Survey at $z\sim0.007$. This corresponds well with the redshift of the most likely host galaxy of ASKAP FRB 171020, which is at $z=0.00867$. These arguments combined suggest an extremely nearby origin of ASKAP FRBs and a local environment with accumulated electrons that contribute a DM of several hundred pc/cm$^3$, which should be accounted for in theoretical models.

Line-intensity mapping (LIM or IM) is an emerging field of observational work, with strong potential to fit into a larger effort to probe large-scale structure and small-scale astrophysical phenomena using multiple complementary tracers. Taking full advantage of such complementarity means, in part, undertaking line-intensity surveys with galaxy surveys in mind. We consider the potential for detection of a cross-correlation signal between COMAP and blind surveys based on photometric redshifts (as in COSMOS) or based on spectroscopic data (as with the HETDEX survey of Lyman-$\alpha$ emitters). We find that obtaining $\sigma_z/(1+z)\lesssim0.003$ accuracy in redshifts and $\gtrsim10^{-4}$ sources per Mpc$^3$ with spectroscopic redshift determination should enable a CO-galaxy cross spectrum detection significance at least twice that of the CO auto spectrum. We develop a framework for joint constraints on the CO luminosity function based on power spectra (PS) and voxel intensity distributions (VID), and apply this to simulations of COMAP, a CO intensity mapping experiment. This Bayesian framework is based on a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampler coupled to a Gaussian likelihood with a joint PS + VID covariance matrix computed from a large number of fiducial simulations, and re-calibrated with a small number of simulations per MCMC step. The simulations are based on dark matter halos from fast peak patch simulations combined with the $L_\text{CO}(M_\text{halo})$ model of Li et al. (2016). We find that the relative power to constrain the CO luminosity function depends on the luminosity range of interest. In particular, the VID is more sensitive at both small and large luminosities, while the PS is more sensitive at intermediate luminosities. The joint analysis is superior to using either observable separately. When averaging over CO luminosities ranging between $L_\text{CO} = 10^4-10^7L_\odot$, and over 10 cosmological realizations of COMAP Phase 2, the uncertainties (in dex) are larger by 58 % and 30 % for the PS and VID, respectively, when compared to the joint analysis (PS + VID). We present the most detailed computation to date of the 21-cm global signal and fluctuations at $z\gtrsim 500$. Our calculations include a highly precise estimate of the Wouthuysen-Field (WF) effect and the first explicit calculation of the impact of free-free processes, the two dominant components of the signal at $z\gtrsim 800$. We implement a new high-resolution Ly$\alpha$ radiative transfer calculation, coupled to a state-of-the-art primordial recombination code. Using these tools, we find a global signal from 21-cm processes alone of roughly 0.01mK at $z\sim1000$, slightly larger than it would be without the WF effect, but much weaker than previous estimates including this effect. We also find that this signal is swamped by a smooth $1-2$ mK signal due to free-free absorption at high redshift by the partially ionized gas along the line of sight. In addition, we estimate the amplitude of 21-cm fluctuations, of order $\sim 10^{-7}$ mK at $z\sim1000$. Unfortunately, we find that due to the brightness of the low-frequency sky, these fluctuations will not be observable beyond $z\sim$ a few hundred by even extremely futuristic observations. The 21 cm fluctuations are exponentially suppressed at higher redshifts by the large free-free optical depth, making this the ultimate upper redshift limit for 21-cm surveys., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, submitted to PRD

Following the first two annual intensity mapping workshops at Stanford in March 2016 and Johns Hopkins in June 2017, we report on the recent advances in theory, instrumentation and observation that were presented in these meetings and some of the opportunities and challenges that were identified looking forward. With preliminary detections of CO, [CII], Lya and low-redshift 21cm, and a host of experiments set to go online in the next few years, the field is rapidly progressing on all fronts, with great anticipation for a flood of new exciting results. This current snapshot provides an efficient reference for experts in related fields and a useful resource for nonspecialists. We begin by introducing the concept of line-intensity mapping and then discuss the broad array of science goals that will be enabled, ranging from the history of star formation, reionization and galaxy evolution to measuring baryon acoustic oscillations at high redshift and constraining theories of dark matter, modified gravity and dark energy. After reviewing the first detections reported to date, we survey the experimental landscape, presenting the parameters and capabilities of relevant instruments such as COMAP, mmIMe, AIM-CO, CCAT-p, TIME, CONCERTO, CHIME, HIRAX, HERA, STARFIRE, MeerKAT/SKA and SPHEREx. Finally, we describe recent theoretical advances: different approaches to modeling line luminosity functions, several techniques to separate the desired signal from foregrounds, statistical methods to analyze the data, and frameworks to generate realistic intensity map simulations., Comment: 99 pages, 48 figures; Endorsement and any comments welcome; To be submitted to Physics Reports

We examine how future gravitational-wave measurements from merging black holes (BHs) can be used to infer the shape of the black-hole mass function, with important implications for the study of star formation and evolution and the properties of binary BHs. We model the mass function as a power law, inherited from the stellar initial mass function, and introduce lower and upper mass cutoff parameterizations in order to probe the minimum and maximum BH masses allowed by stellar evolution, respectively. We initially focus on the heavier BH in each binary, to minimize model dependence. Taking into account the experimental noise, the mass measurement errors and the uncertainty in the redshift-dependence of the merger rate, we show that the mass function parameters, as well as the total rate of merger events, can be measured to <10% accuracy within a few years of advanced LIGO observations at its design sensitivity. This can be used to address important open questions such as the upper limit on the stellar mass which allows for BH formation and to confirm or refute the currently observed mass gap between neutron stars and BHs. In order to glean information on the progenitors of the merging BH binaries, we then advocate the study of the two-dimensional mass distribution to constrain parameters that describe the two-body system, such as the mass ratio between the two BHs, in addition to the merger rate and mass function parameters. We argue that several years of data collection can efficiently probe models of binary formation, and show, as an example, that the hypothesis that some gravitational-wave events may involve primordial black holes can be tested. Finally, we point out that in order to maximize the constraining power of the data, it may be worthwhile to lower the signal-to-noise threshold imposed on each candidate event and amass a larger statistical ensemble of BH mergers., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures; To be submitted to PRD; Comments welcome

In the next few years, intensity-mapping surveys that target lines such as CO, Ly$\alpha$, and CII stand to provide powerful probes of high-redshift astrophysics. However, these line emissions are highly non-Gaussian, and so the typical power-spectrum methods used to study these maps will leave out a significant amount of information. We propose a new statistic, the probability distribution of voxel intensities, which can access this extra information. Using a model of a CO intensity map at $z\sim3$ as an example, we demonstrate that this voxel intensity distribution (VID) provides substantial constraining power beyond what is obtainable from the power spectrum alone. We find that a future survey similar to the planned COMAP Full experiment could constrain the CO luminosity function to order $\sim10\%$. We also explore the effects of contamination from continuum emission, interloper lines, and gravitational lensing on our constraints and find that the VID statistic retains significant constraining power even in pessimistic scenarios., Comment: 14 pages, 13 figures, submitted to MNRAS

The study of molecular gas is crucial for understanding star formation, feedback, and the broader ecosystem of a galaxy as a whole. However, we have limited understanding of its physics and distribution in all but the nearest galaxies. We present a new technique for studying the composition and distribution of molecular gas in high-redshift galaxies inaccessible to existing methods. Our proposed approach is an extension of carbon monoxide intensity mapping methods, which have garnered significant experimental interest in recent years. These intensity mapping surveys target the 115 GHz $^{12}$CO (1-0) line, but also contain emission from the substantially fainter 110 GHz $^{13}$CO (1-0) transition. The method leverages the information contained in the $^{13}$CO line by cross-correlating pairs of frequency channels in an intensity mapping survey. Since $^{13}$CO is emitted from the same medium as the $^{12}$CO, but saturates at a much higher column density, this cross-correlation provides valuable information about both the gas density distribution and isotopologue ratio, inaccessible from the $^{12}$CO alone. Using a simple model of these molecular emission lines, we show that a future intensity mapping survey can constrain the abundance ratio of these two species and the fraction of emission from optically thick regions to order $\sim30\%$. We demonstrate how cosmic star-formation history can be measured with one-point statistics of carbon-monoxide intensity maps. Using a P(D) analysis, the luminosity function of CO-emitting sources can be inferred from the measured one-point intensity PDF. The star-formation rate density (SFRD) can then be obtained, at several redshifts, from the CO luminosity density. We study the effects of instrumental noise, line foregrounds, and target redshift, and obtain constraints on the CO luminosity density of order 10%. We show that the SFRD uncertainty is dominated by that of the model connecting CO luminosity and star formation. For pessimistic estimates of this model uncertainty, we obtain an error of order 50% on SFRD for surveys targeting redshifts between 2 and 7 with reasonable noise and foregrounds included. However, comparisons between intensity maps and galaxies could substantially reduce this model uncertainty. In this case our constraints on SFRD at these redshifts improve to roughly 5-10%, which is highly competitive with current measurements., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, Accepted to MNRASL

We address the problem of line confusion in intensity mapping surveys and explore the possibility to mitigate line foreground contamination by progressively masking the brightest pixels in the observed map. We consider experiments targeting CO(1-0) at $z=3$, Ly$\alpha$ at $z=7$, and CII at $z=7$, and use simulated intensity maps, which include both clustering and shot noise components of the signal and possible foregrounds, in order to test the efficiency of our method. We find that for CO and Ly$\alpha$ it is quite possible to remove most of the foreground contribution from the maps via only 1%-3% pixel masking. The CII maps will be more difficult to clean, however, due to instrumental constraints and the high-intensity foreground contamination involved. While the masking procedure sacrifices much of the astrophysical information present in our maps, we demonstrate that useful cosmological information in the targeted lines can be successfully retrieved., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRAS

We present a study of the feasibility of an intensity-mapping survey targeting the 115 GHz CO(1-0) rotational transition at $z\sim3$. We consider four possible models and estimate the spatial and angular power spectra of CO fluctuations predicted by each of them. The frequency bandwidths of most proposed CO intensity mapping spectrographs are too small to use the Limber approximation to calculate the angular power spectrum, so we present an alternative method for calculating the angular power spectrum. The models we consider span two orders of magnitude in signal amplitude, so there is a significant amount of uncertainty in the theoretical predictions of this signal. We then consider a parameterized set of hypothetical spectrographs designed to measure this power spectrum and predict the signal-to-noise ratios expected under these models. With the spectrographs we consider we find that three of the four models give an SNR greater than 10 within one year of observation. We also study the effects on SNR of varying the parameters of the survey in order to demonstrate the importance of carefully considering survey parameters when planning such an experiment., Comment: 7 pages, 8 fgures, published in MNRAS

We study the oscillations and stability of self-gravitating cylindrically symmetric fluid systems and collisionless systems. This is done by studying small perturbations to the equilibrium system and finding the normal modes, using methods similar to those used in astroseismology. We find that there is a single sequence of purely radial modes that become unstable if the adiabatic exponent is less than 1. Nonradial modes can be divided into p modes, which are stable and pressure-driven, and g modes, which are are gravity driven. The g modes become unstable if the adiabatic exponent is greater than the polytrope index. These modes are analogous to the modes of a spherical star, but their behavior is somewhat different because a cylindrical geometry has less symmetry than a spherical geometry. This implies that perturbations are classified by a radial quantum number, an azimuthal quantum number, and wavelength in the z direction, which can become arbitrarily large. We find that decreasing this wavelength increases the frequency of stable modes and increases the growth rate of unstable modes. We use use variational arguments to demonstrate that filaments of collisionless matter with ergodic distribution functions are stable to purely radial perturbations, and that filaments with ergodic power-law distribution functions are stable to all perturbations., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, published in MNRAS
