3. Radiation induced currents in mineral-insulated cables and in pick-up coils: model calculations and experimental verification in the BR1 reactor

Abstract

Mineral-insulated (MI) cables and Low-Temperature Co-fired Ceramic (LTCC) magnetic pick-up coils are intended to be installed in various position in ITER. The severe ITER nuclear radiation field is expected to lead to induced currents that could perturb diagnostic measurements. In order to assess this problem and to find mitigation strategies models were developed for the calculation of neutron-and gamma-induced currents in MI cables and in LTCC coils. The models are based on calculations with the MCNPX code, combined with a dedicated model for the drift of electrons stopped in the insulator. The gamma induced currents can be easily calculated with a single coupled photon-electron MCNPX calculation. The prompt neutron induced currents requires only a single coupled neutron-photon-electron MCNPX run. The various delayed neutron contributions require a careful analysis of all possibly relevant neutron-induced reaction paths and a combination of different types of MCNPX calculations. The models were applied for a specific twin-core copper MI cable, for one quad-core copper cable and for silver conductor LTCC coils (one with silver ground plates in order to reduce the currents and one without such silver ground plates). Calculations were performed for irradiation conditions (neutron and gamma spectra and fluxes) in relevant positions in ITER and in the Y3 irradiation channel of the BR1 reactor at SCK•CEN, in which an irradiation test of these four test devices was carried out afterwards. We will present the basic elements of the models and show the results of all relevant partial currents (gamma and neutron induced, prompt and various delayed currents) in BR1-Y3 conditions. Experimental data will be shown and analysed in terms of the respective contributions. The tests were performed at reactor powers of 350 kW and 1 MW, leading to thermal neutron fluxes of 1E11 n/cm2s and 3E11 n/cm2s, respectively. The corresponding total radiation induced currents are ranging from 1 to 7 nA only, putting a challenge on the acquisition system and on the data analysis. The detailed experimental results will be compared with the corresponding values predicted by the model. The overall agreement between the experimental data and the model predictions is fairly good, with very consistent data for the main delayed current components, while the lower amplitude delayed currents and some of the prompt contributions show some minor discrepancies.

Abstract

The possibility to monitor pulsed dose-rate facilities by means of real-time fibered dosimetry is investigated. A system based on the luminescence of the SrS:Ce,Sm is used to monitor pulses from a medical accelerator with four different dose-rates. The RL signal is characterized using a dedicated acquisition system. The RL recorded is linear with dose-rate and dose. The stem effect due to both Cerenkov emission and photoluminescence in the fiber was also investigated with 18 MV photons and 12 MeV electrons. 6. High level gamma and neutron irradiation of silica optical fibers in CEA OSIRIS nuclear reactor

Abstract

In the final objective of elaborating an optical sensor of dimensional change in a nuclear testing reactor, we present extreme high level irradiation tests, up to 1.3 1020 [n.sub.fast]/[cm.sup.2] and 16GGy, conducted on high purity silica and hollow core photonic bandgap (PBG) fibers. These tests are performed in the OSIRIS reactor at CEA Saclay. We measure continuously Radiation Induced Absorption (RIA), at 3 optical wavelengths: 980 nm, 1064 nm and 1310 nm. The evolution with the time of the spectral dependency over larger wavelength range is also reported. As well as reporting RIA up to higher dose than presented before, we demonstrate here the excellent superiority of hollow core PBG fibers over their conventional counterparts in term of radiation resistance up to over [10.sup.20] [n.sub.fast]/[cm.sup.2] and 10GGy. We also report some Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) measurements that probe the irradiated parts of the fibers and show a back scattering peak which appears, widens spatially then duplicates. We provide an interpretation based on the change of silica when it turns to metamict phase. Index Terms--Fiber, irradiation, optical sensor, photonics fiber, pure silica.

7. Comparison between point defect generation by [gamma]-rays in bulk and fibre samples of high purity amorphous Si[O.sub.2]

We compare the E', H(I) and Si-ODC(II) contents in a low-OH high-purity a-Si[O.sub.2] both in bulk and fibre forms. The investigation includes the effects of hydrogen loading of the fibre. We found that the H(I) centre appears during irradiation and that its concentration tends to increase with the dose in fibers impregnated with molecular hydrogen. For the hydrogen-treated fibers, no experimental repeatability could be found in the measurements of E' and Si-ODC(II) although an acceptable agreement was still found in non-hydrogenated samples. This result suggests a possible complex reaction mechanisms under gamma radiation when the glass has a hydrogen excess. Index Terms--Fibre, gamma, hydrogen, point defects, silica.

Abstract

We experimentally study the effect of ionizing radiation on the properties of long-period gratings fabricated in two pure-silica-core fibers with the arc-discharge technique. It is observed that the spectra of the gratings remain almost unchanged after being subjected to doses in excess of 0.5 MGy. Abstract

We evaluated the performances of the hydrogen-loading technique to reduce the radiation-induced absorption in optical fibers in the visible part of the spectrum. A reduction factor as large as one order of magnitude can be obtained in high dose-rate regime. Based on a spectral deconvolution method, we showed that hydrogen preferentially interacts with NBOHC defects while the number of POR defects is not affected. Abstract

Content The High Resolution Neutron Spectrometer (HRNS) system for ITER is an array of neutron spectrometers with the primary function to provide measurements of the fuel ion ratio, nT/nD, in the plasma core. Supplementary functions are to assist or provide information on fuel ion temperature and energy distributions of fuel ions and confined alpha-particles. The ITER requirement for the HRNS primary function is to obtain nT/nD with 20% uncertainty and a time resolution of 100 ms. In this contribution, a conceptual HRNS system design and its measurement performance for nT/nD will be presented. The HRNS system studied, is based on established instrumental techniques and its performance is assessed using realistic response functions for the individual spectrometers in the system. The main interfacing requirements for the HRNS is a 10 cm diameter aperture in the ITER first wall, tapered collimation resulting in a neutron flux in the order of 1099 n/cm22/s on an area of 12 cm22 at a distance of 16 m from the first wall. For optimum use of the available neutron flux, the system is divided into two sections; "low efficiency" neutron spectrometers in the front and "high efficiency" in the rear. Also investigated is to use an adjustable collimator between the front and rear spectrometers in order to enhance the dynamic range and overlap of the two sections. For the combination of neutron spectrometers presented here, it is shown that the system fulfills the ITER requirement, on nT/nD, over an order of magnitude in fusion power, 50 < Pfus < 500 MW. In the performance study, contributions due to neutron scattering in the vessel walls, collimator and beam dump are included together with a neutron induced gamma background.

Abstract

The change of the refractive index over a wide wavelength range in Ge- and N-doped high purity (fiber optics grade) silica glasses subjected to gamma irradiation is reported. The results shed light on the differences observed in spectral behavior of the induced refractive index charge for both types of doped glass.

Abstract

SummaryBackground Whether aminosalicylates or thiopurines reduce the risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) in inflammatory bowel (IBD) disease is controversial. Aim To assess simultaneously the chemopreventive effect of aminosalicylates or thiopurines in a case–control study nested in the CESAME observational cohort that enrolled consecutive patients with IBD between May 2004 and June 2005. Patients were followed up to December 2007. Methods Study population comprised 144 case patients who developed CRC from the diagnosis of IBD (65 and 79 cases diagnosed, respectively, before and from 2004, starting year of the prospective observational period of CESAME) and 286 controls matched for gender, age, IBD subtype and year of diagnosis, and cumulative extent of colitis. Exposure to aminosalicylates or thiopurines was defined by an exposure to the treatment during the year of the diagnosis of cancer. The propensity of receiving 5-ASA and thiopurines was quantified by a composite score taking into account patient and IBD characteristics. The role of aminosalicylates or thiopurines was assessed by multivariate analysis. Propensity scores and the history of primary sclerosing cholangitis were entered into the multivariate model for adjustment. Results By multivariate analysis adjusted for propensity, a significant protective effect of exposure to drugs during the year of cancer was found for aminosalicylates (OR = 0.587, 95% CI: 0.367–0.937, P = 0.0257), but not for thiopurines (OR = 0.762, 95% CI: 0.432–1.343, P = 0.3468). Conclusion In a case–control study nested in the CESAME cohort, a significant decrease in the risk of colorectal cancer in IBD was associated with exposure to aminosalicylates, not to thiopurines.
