12 pags., We address the stability issue of Ricci-flat and maximally symmetric spacetimes in nonlocal gravity to all perturbative orders in the gravitational perturbation. Assuming a potential at least cubic in curvature tensors but quadratic in the Ricci tensor, our proof consists on a mapping of the stability analysis in nonlocal gravity to the same problem in Einstein-Hilbert theory. One of the consequences is that only the graviton field can propagate and the theory is ghost-free at all perturbative orders. All the results known in Einstein gravity in vacuum with or without a cosmological constant can be exported to the case of nonlocal gravity: if a spacetime is stable at all perturbative orders in Einstein gravity, it is stable also in nonlocal gravity. Minkowski and de Sitter spacetimes are particular examples. We also study how the theory affects the propagation of gravitational waves in a cosmological background., G. C. and L. We prove that the Minkowski spacetime is stable at nonlinear level and to all perturbative orders in the gravitational perturbation in a general class of nonlocal gravitational theories that are unitary and finite at quantum level.

It has been recently demonstrated that it is possible to construct isochronous cosmologies, extending to general relativity a result valid for non-relativistic Hamiltonian systems. Under the action of light-by-light scattering, light beams show collective behaviors in vacuum. For instance, in the case of two counterpropagating laser beams with specific initial helicity, the polarization of each beam oscillates periodically between the left and right helicity. Furthermore, the amplitudes and the corresponding intensities of each polarization propagate like waves. We consider the Heisenberg-Euler action for an electromagnetic field in vacuum, which includes quantum corrections to the Maxwell equations induced by photon-photon scattering. We show that, in some configurations, the plane monochromatic waves become unstable, due to the appearance of secularities in the dynamical equations. These secularities can be treated using a multiscale approach, introducing a slow time variable. The amplitudes of the plane electromagnetic waves satisfy a system of ordinary differential nonlinear equations in the slow time. The analysis of this system shows that, due to the effect of photon-photon scattering, in the unstable configurations the electromagnetic waves oscillate periodically between left-hand-sided and right-hand-sided polarizations. In this paper it is argued how the dynamics of the classical Newtonian N-body system can be described in terms of the Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger-Poisson equations in the large $N$ limit. This result is based on the stochastic quantization introduced by Nelson, and on the Calogero conjecture. According to the Calogero conjecture, the emerging effective Planck constant is computed in terms of the parameters of the N-body system as $\hbar \sim M^{5/3} G^{1/2} (N/)^{1/6}$, where is $G$ the gravitational constant, $N$ and $M$ are the number and the mass of the bodies, and $$ is their average density. The relevance of this result in the context of large scale structure formation is discussed. In particular, this finding gives a further argument in support of the validity of the Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger method as numerical double of the N-body simulations of dark matter dynamics at large cosmological scales., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Euro. We derive the dynamical equations for a non-local gravity model in the Palatini formalism and we discuss some of the properties of this model. We have shown that, in some specific cases, the vacuum solutions of general relativity are also vacuum solutions of the non-local model, so we conclude that, at least in this case, the singularities of Einstein's gravity are not removed., Comment: 10 pages

We show that harmonically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates can be used to constrain Planck scale physics. In particular we prove that a Planck-scale induced deformation of the Minkowski energy-momentum dispersion relation $\delta E \simeq \xi_1 mcp/2M_p$ produces a shift in the condensation temperature $T_c$ of about $\Delta T_{c}/T_{c}^{0} \simeq 10^{-6} \xi_1 $ for typical laboratory conditions. Such a shift allows to bound the deformation parameter up to $|\xi_1| \lesssim 10^4$. Moreover we show that it is possible to enlarge $\Delta T_{c}/T_{c}^{0}$ and improve the bound on $\xi_1$ lowering the frequency of the harmonic trap. We discuss a possible origin of the experimentally observed nonlinear contribution to the shift $\Delta T_{c}=T_c-T_{c}^{0}$ of the critical temperature $T_{c}$ in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with respect to the critical temperature $T_{c}^{0}$ of an ideal gas. We found that accounting for a nonlinear (quadratic) Zeeman effect (with applied magnetic field closely matching a Feshbach resonance field $B_0$) in the mean-field approximation results in a rather significant renormalization of the field-free nonlinear contribution $b_{2}$, namely $\Delta T_{c}/T_{c}^{0}\simeq b_{2}^{\ast }(a/\lambda _{T})^{2}$ (where $a$ is the s-wave scattering length, $\lambda _{T}$ is the thermal wavelength at $T_{c}^{0}$) with $b_{2}^{\ast }=\gamma ^{2}b_{2}$ and $\gamma =\gamma (B_0)$. In particular, we predict $b_{2}^{\ast }\simeq 42.3$ for the $B_{0}\simeq 403G$ resonance observed in the $\ ^{39}K$ BEC., Comment: Accepted for publication in JETP Letters

We study the shift ΔTc in the condensation temperature of an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a temperature-dependent three-dimensional generic potential. With no assumptions other than the mean-field approach and the semiclassical approximation, it is shown that the inclusion of a T-dependent trap improves upon the pure semiclassical result giving better agreement between the predicted ΔTc value and its experimental value. However, despite this improvement, the effect of a T-dependent trap is not sufficient to fully reduce the discrepancy between theoretical prediction and data.

In this paper we apply the usual perturbative methodology to evaluate the one-loop effective potential in a nonlocal scalar field theory. We find that the effect induced by the nonlocaliity of the theory is always very small and we discuss the consequences of this result. In particular we argue that, looking at one-loop corrections for matter fields, it is not possible to find signals of the nonlocality of the theory in cosmological observables since, even during inflation when energies are very high, nonlocality-induced corrections are expected to be very small.

The recent Planck data of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropies support the Starobinsky theory in which the quadratic Ricci scalar drives cosmic inflation. We build up a multi-dimensional quantum consisted ultraviolet completion of the model in a phenomenological "bottom-up approach". We present the maximal class of theories compatible with unitarity and (super-)renormalizability or finiteness which reduces to the Starobinsky theory in the low-energy limit. The outcome is a maximal extension of the Krasnikov-Tomboulis-Modesto theory including an extra scalar degree of freedom besides the graviton field. The original theory was afterwards independently discovered by Biswas-Gerwick-Koivisto-Mazumdar starting from first principles. We explicitly show power counting super-renormalizability or finiteness (in odd dimensions) and unitarity (no ghosts) of the theory. Any further extension of the theory is non-unitary confirming the existence of at most one single extra degree of freedom, the scalaron. We discuss the effect of inter-atoms interactions on the condensation temperature $T_c$ of an atomic laboratory trapped Bose-Einstein condensate. We show that, in the mean-field Hartree-Fock and semiclassical approximations, interactions produce a shift $\Delta T_{c}/T_{c}^{0} \approx b_1 (a/\lambda_{T_c}) + b_2 (a/\lambda_{T_c})^2 + \psi[a/\lambda_{T_c}]$ with $a$ the s-wave scattering length, $\lambda_T$ the thermal wavelength and $\psi[a/\lambda_{T_c}]$ a non-analytic function such that $\psi[0] = \psi'[0] = \psi"[0] = 0$ and $|\psi"'[0]| = \infty$. Therefore, with no more assumptions than Hartree-Fock and semiclassical approximations, interaction effecs are perturbative to second order in $a/\lambda_{T_c}$ and the expected non-perturbativity of physical quantities at critical temperature appears only to third order. We compare this finding with different results by other authors, which are based on more than the Hartree-Fock and semiclassical approximations. Moreover, we obtain an analytical estimation for $b_2 \simeq 18.8$ which improves a previous numerical result. We also discuss how the discrepancy between $b_2$ and the empirical value of $b_2 = 46 \pm 5$ may be explained with no need to resort to beyond-mean field effects., Comment: 6 pages, to appear in Eur. We present a new mechanism that allows to unify inflation and dark energy. We use a scalar field φ with a potential ν(φ) that has two at regions at high and low energies that are associated with inflation and dark energy respectively. After inflation φ decays com- pletely and reheat the universe. Eventually φ is regenerated at late times close to present via a quantum process and the dark energy epoch begins.
