We present Near-Infrared (NIR) ground-based Y, J, H, and K imaging obtained in the James Webb Space Telescope North Ecliptic Pole Time Domain Field (TDF) using the MMT-Magellan Infrared Imager and Spectrometer (MMIRS) on the MMT.These new observations cover a field of approximately 230 arcmin^2 in Y, H, and K and 313 arcmin^2 in J. Using Monte Carlo simulations we estimate a 1 sigma depth relative to the background sky of (Y, J, H, K}) = (23.80, 23.53, 23.13, 23.28) in AB magnitudes for point sources at a 95% completeness level. These observations are part of the ground-based effort to characterize this region of the sky, supplementing space-based data obtained with Chandra, NuSTAR, XMM, AstroSat, HST, and JWST. This paper describes the observations and reduction of the NIR imaging and combines these NIR data with archival imaging in the visible, obtained with the Subaru Hyper-Suprime-Cam, to produce a merged catalog of 57,501 sources. The new observations reported here, plus the corresponding multi-wavelength catalog, will provide a baseline for time-domain studies of bright sources in the TDF., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures. The recent development of $\theta\mhyphen\theta$ techniques in pulsar scintillometry has opened the door for new high resolution imaging techniques of the scattering medium. By solving the phase retrieval problem and recovering the wavefield from a pulsar dynamic spectrum, the Doppler shift, time delay, and phase offset of individual images can be determined. However, the results of phase retrieval from a single dish are only known up to a constant phase rotation, which introduces extra parameters when doing astrometry using Very Long Baseline Interferometry. We present an extension to previous $\theta\mhyphen\theta$ methods using the interferometric visibilities between multiple stations to calibrate the wavefields. When applied to existing data for PSR B0834+06 we measure the effective screen distance and lens orientation with five times greater precision than previous works.

The parabolic structure of the secondary or conjugate spectra of pulsars is often the result of isolated one-dimensional (or at least highly anisotropic) lenses in the ISM. The curvature of these features contains information about the velocities of the Earth, ISM, and pulsar along the primary axis of the lens. As a result, measuring variations in the curvature over the course of a year, or the orbital period for pulsars in binaries, can constrain properties of the screen and pulsar. In particular the pulsar distance and orbital inclination for binary systems can be found for multiple screens or systems with prior information on $\sin(i)$. By mapping the conjugate spectra into a space where the main arc and inverted arclets are straight lines, we are able to make use of the full information content from the inverted arclet curvatures, amplitudes, and phases using eigenvectors to uniquely and optimally retrieve phase information. This allows for a higher precision measurement than the standard Hough transform for systems where these features are available. Our technique also directly yields the best fit 1D impulse response function for the interstellar lens given in terms of the Doppler shift, time delay, and magnification of images on the sky as seen from a single observatory. This can be extended for use in holographic imaging of the lens by combining multiple telescopes. We present examples of this new method for both simulated data and actual observations of PSR B0834+06.

AT2019wey is a Galactic low mass X-ray binary with a candidate black hole accretor first discovered as an optical transient by ATLAS in December 2019. It was then associated with an X-ray source discovered by SRG in March 2020. After observing a brightening in X-rays in August 2020, VLA observations of the source revealed an optically thin spectrum that subsequently shifted to optically thick, as the source continued to brighten in radio. This motivated observations of the source with the VLBA. We found a resolved source that we interpret to be a steady compact jet, a feature associated with black hole X-ray binary systems in the hard X-ray spectral state. We introduce a novel analysis technique for pulsar secondary spectra. The power spectrum of pulsar scintillation (referred to as the "secondary spectrum") shows differential delays and Doppler shifts due to interference from multi-path propagation through the interstellar medium. We develop a transformation which maps these observables to angular coordinates on a single thin screen of phase-changing material. This transformation is possible without degeneracies in the case of a one-dimensional distribution of images on this screen, which is often a successful description of the phenomenon. The double parabolic features of secondary spectra are transformed into parallel linear features, whose properties we describe in detail. Furthermore, we introduce methods to measure the curvature parameter and the field amplitude distribution of images by applying them to observations of PSR B0834+06. This white paper describes the science case for Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) and provides suggestions towards upgrade paths for the European VLBI Network (EVN). The EVN is a distributed long-baseline radio interferometric array, that operates at the very forefront of astronomical research. Recent results, together with the new science possibilities outlined in this vision document, demonstrate the EVN's potential to generate new and exciting results that will transform our view of the cosmos. Together with e-MERLIN, the EVN provides a range of baseline lengths that permit unique studies of faint radio sources to be made over a wide range of spatial scales. The science cases are reviewed in six chapters that cover the following broad areas: cosmology, galaxy formation and evolution, innermost regions of active galactic nuclei, explosive phenomena and transients, stars and stellar masers in the Milky Way, celestial reference frames and space applications. The document concludes with identifying the synergies with other radio, as well as multi-band/multi-messenger instruments, and provide the recommendations for future improvements. We present a multi-wavelength study of the active galactic nucleus in the nearby ($D=14.1$ Mpc) low mass galaxy IC 750, which has circumnuclear 22 GHz water maser emission. The masers trace a nearly edge-on, warped disk $\sim$0.2 pc in diameter, coincident with the compact nuclear X-ray source which lies at the base of the $\sim$kpc-scale extended X-ray emission. The position-velocity structure of the maser emission indicates the central black hole (BH) has a mass less than $1.4 \times 10^5~M_\odot$. Keplerian rotation curves fitted to these data yield enclosed masses between $4.1 \times 10^4~M_\odot$ and $1.4 \times 10^5~M_\odot$, with a mode of $7.2 \times 10^4~M_\odot$. Fitting the optical spectrum, we measure a nuclear stellar velocity dispersion $\sigma_* = 110.7^{+12.1}_{-13.4}$~{\rm km~s}$^{-1}.$ From near-infrared photometry, we fit a bulge mass of $(7.3 \pm 2.7) \times 10^8~M_\odot$ and a stellar mass of $1.4 \times 10^{10}~M_\odot$. The mass upper limit of the intermediate mass black hole in IC 750 falls roughly two orders of magnitude below the $M_{\rm BH}-\sigma_*$ relation and roughly one order of magnitude below the $M_{\rm BH}-M_{\rm Bulge}$ and $M_{\rm BH}-M_*$ relations -- larger than the relations' intrinsic scatters of (0.58 $\pm$ 0.09) dex, 0.69 dex, and (0.65 $\pm$ 0.09) dex, respectively. These offsets could be due to larger scatter at the low mass end of these relations. Alternatively, black hole growth is intrinsically inefficient in galaxies with low bulge and/or stellar masses, which causes the black holes to be under-massive relative to their hosts, as predicted by some galaxy evolution simulations., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

The "Space VLBI 2020: Science and Technology Futures" meeting was the second in The Future of High-Resolution Radio Interferometry in Space series. The first meeting (2018 September 5--6; Noordwijk, the Netherlands) focused on the full range of science applications possible for very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) with space-based antennas. Accordingly, the observing frequencies (wavelengths) considered ranged from below 1~MHz (> 300 m) to above 300~GHz (< 1 mm). For this second meeting, the focus was narrowed to mission concepts and the supporting technologies to enable the highest angular resolution observations at frequencies of 30~GHz and higher (< 1 cm). This narrowing of focus was driven by both scientific and technical considerations. First, results from the RadioAstron mission and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) have generated considerable excitement for studying the inner portions of black hole (BH) accretion disks and jets and testing elements of the General Theory of Relativity (GR). Second, the technologies and requirements involved in space-based VLBI differ considerably between 100~MHz and 100~GHz; a related consideration is that there are a number of existing instruments or mission concepts for frequencies of approximately 100~MHz and below, while it has been some time since attention has been devoted to space VLBI at frequencies above 10~GHz. Surveys have shown that up to one tenth of all ultracool dwarfs (UCDs) are appreciable radio emitters, with their emission attributed to a combination of gyrosynchrotron radiation and the electron cyclotron maser instability (ECMI). 2M J0746+2000AB is a close stellar binary comprised of an L0 and L1.5 dwarf that was previously identified as a source of 5 GHz radio emission. We used very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) to precisely track the radio emission over seven epochs in 2010-2017, and found both components to be radio emitters -- the first such system identified -- with the secondary component as the dominant source of emission in all epochs. The previously identified 2.07 h periodic bursts were confirmed to originate from the secondary component, although an isolated burst was also identified from the primary component. We additionally fitted the VLBI absolute astrometric positions jointly with existing relative orbital astrometry derived from optical/IR observations with Markov-chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods to determine the orbital parameters of the two components. We found the masses of the primary and secondary optical components to be 0.0795 +/- 0.0003 Msun and 0.0756 +/- 0.0003 Msun, respectively, representing the most precise mass estimates of any UCDs to date. Astrometry, the measurement of positions and motions of the stars, is one of the oldest disciplines in Astronomy, extending back at least as far as Hipparchus' discovery of the precession of Earth's axes in 190 BCE by comparing his catalog with those of his predecessors. Astrometry is fundamental to Astronomy, and critical to many aspects of Astrophysics and Geodesy. In order to understand our planet's and solar system's context within their surroundings, we must be able to to define, quantify, study, refine, and maintain an inertial frame of reference relative to which all positions and motions can be unambiguously and self-consistently described. It is only by using this inertial reference frame that we are able to disentangle our observations of the motions of celestial objects from our own complex path around our star, and its path through the galaxy, and the local group. Every aspect of each area outlined in the call for scientific frontiers in astronomy in the era of the 2020-2030 timeframe will depend on the quality of the inertial reference frame. In this white paper, we propose support for development of radio Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) capabilities, including the Next Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA), a radio astronomy observatory that will not only support development of a next generation reference frame of unprecedented accuracy, but that will also serve as a highly capable astronomical instrument in its own right. The bright maser emission produced by several molecular species at centimeter to long millimeter wavelengths provides an essential tool for understanding the process of massive star formation. Unimpeded by the high dust optical depths that affect shorter wavelength observations, the high brightness temperature of these emission lines offers a way to resolve accretion and outflow motions down to scales below $\sim$1 au in deeply embedded Galactic star-forming regions at kiloparsec distances. The recent identification of extraordinary accretion outbursts in two high-mass protostars, both of which were heralded by maser flares, has rapidly impacted the traditional view of massive protostellar evolution, leading to new hydrodynamic simulations that can produce such episodic outbursts. In order to understand how these massive protostars evolve in response to such events, larger, more sensitive ground-based centimeter wavelength interferometers are needed that can simultaneously image multiple maser species in the molecular gas along with faint continuum from the central ionized gas. Fiducial observations of a large sample of massive protostars will be essential in order to pinpoint the progenitors of future accretion outbursts, and to quantify the outburst-induced changes in their protostellar photospheres and outflow and accretion structures. Gravitational wave (GW) and gravitational slingshot recoil kicks, which are natural products of SMBH evolution in merging galaxies, can produce active galactic "nuclei" that are offset from the centers of their host galaxies. Detections of offset AGN would provide key constraints on SMBH binary mass and spin evolution and on GW event rates. Although numerous offset AGN candidates have been identified, none have been definitively confirmed. Multi-wavelength observations with next-generation telescopes, including systematic large-area surveys, will provide unprecedented opportunities to identify and confirm candidate offset AGN from sub-parsec to kiloparsec scales. Pulsar scintillation allows a glimpse into small-scale plasma structures in the interstellar medium, if we can infer their properties from the scintillation pattern. With Very Long Baseline Interferometry and working in delay-delay rate space, where the contributions of pairs of images to the interference pattern become localized, the scattering geometry and distribution of scattered images on the sky can be determined if a single, highly-anisotropic scattering screen is responsible for the scintillation. However, many pulsars are subject to much more complex scattering environments where this method cannot be used. We present a novel technique to reconstruct the scattered flux of the pulsar and solve for the scattering geometry in these cases by combining interferometric visibilities with cross-correlations of single-station intensities. This takes advantage of the fact that, considering a single image pair in delay-delay rate space, the visibilities are sensitive to the sum of the image angular displacements, while the cross-correlated intensities are sensitive to the difference, so that their combination can be used to localize both images of the pair. We show that this technique is able to reconstruct the published scattering geometry of PSR B0834+06, then apply it to simulations of more complicated scattering systems, where we find that it can distinguish features from different scattering screens even when the presence of multiple screens is not obvious in the Fourier transform of the dynamic spectrum. This technique will allow us to both better understand the distribution of scattering within the interstellar medium and to apply current scintillometry techniques, such as modelling scintillation and constraining the location of pulsar emission, to sources for which a current lack of understanding of the scattering environment precludes the use of these techniques. The V-FASTR experiment on the Very Long Baseline Array was designed to detect dispersed pulses of milliseconds duration, such as fast radio bursts (FRBs). We use all V-FASTR data through February 2015 to report V-FASTR's upper limits on the rates of FRBs, and compare these with re-derived rates from Parkes FRB detection experiments. V-FASTR's operation at lambda=20 cm allows direct comparison with the 20 cm Parkes rate, and we derive a power-law limit of \gamma<-0.4 (95% confidence limit) on the index of FRB source counts, N(>S)\propto S^\gamma. Using the previously measured FRB rate and the unprecedented amount of survey time spent searching for FRBs at a large range of wavelengths (0.3 cm > \lambda > 90 cm), we also place frequency-dependent limits on the spectral distribution of FRBs. The most constraining frequencies place two-point spectral index limits of \alpha_{20cm}^{4cm} < 5.8 and \alpha_{90cm}^{20cm} > -7.6, where fluence F \propto f^\alpha if we assume true the burst rate reported by Champion et al. (2016) of R(F~0.6 Jy ms) = 7 x 10^3 sky^{-1} day^{-1} (for bursts of ~3 ms duration). This upper limit on \alpha suggests that if FRBs are extragalactic but non-cosmological, that on average they are not experiencing excessive free-free absorption due to a medium with high optical depth (assuming temperature ~8,000 K), which excessively invert their low-frequency spectrum. This in turn implies that the dispersion of FRBs arises in either or both of the intergalactic medium or the host galaxy, rather than from the source itself., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Our analysis of archival VLBI data of PSR 0834+06 revealed that its scintillation properties can be precisely modelled using the inclined sheet model (Pen & Levin 2014), resulting in two distinct lens planes. These data strongly favour the grazing sheet model over turbulence as the primary source of pulsar scattering. This model can reproduce the parameters of the observed diffractive scintillation with an accuracy at the percent level. Comparison with new VLBI proper motion results in a direct measure of the ionized ISM screen transverse velocity. The results are consistent with ISM velocities local to the PSR 0834+06 sight-line (through the Galaxy). The simple 1D structure of the lenses opens up the possibility of using interstellar lenses as precision probes for pulsar lens mapping, precision transverse motions in the ISM, and new opportunities for removing scattering to improve pulsar timing. We describe the parameters and observables of this double screen system. While relative screen distances can in principle be accurately determined, a global conformal distance degeneracy exists that allows a rescaling of the absolute distance scale. For PSR B0834+06, we present VLBI astrometry results that provide (for the fist time) a direct measurement of the distance of the pulsar. For targets where independent distance measurements are not available, which are the cases for most of the recycled millisecond pulsars that are the targets of precision timing observations, the degeneracy presented in the lens modelling could be broken if the pulsar resides in a binary system., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We use VLBI imaging of the interstellar scattering speckle pattern associated with the pulsar PSR 0834+06 to measure the astrometric motion of its emission. The ~ 5AU interstellar baselines, provided by interference between speckles spanning the scattering disk, enable us to detect motions with sub nanoarcsecond accuracy. We measure a small pulse deflection of ~18+/-2 km (not including geometric uncertainties), which is 100 times smaller than the native resolution of this interstellar interferometer. This implies that the emission region is small, and at an altitude of a few hundred km, with the exact value depending on field geometry. This is substantially closer to the star than to the light cylinder. Future VLBI measurements can improve on this finding. We define a framework for determining constraints on the detection rate of fast transient events from a population of underlying sources, with a view to incorporating beam shape, frequency effects, scattering effects, and detection efficiency into the metric. We then demonstrate a method for combining independent datasets into a single event rate constraint diagram, using a probabilistic approach to the limits on parameter space. We apply this new framework to present the latest results from the V-FASTR experiment, a commensal fast transients search using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). In the 20 cm band, V-FASTR now has the ability to probe the regions of parameter space of importance for the observed Lorimer and Keane fast radio transient candidates, by combining the information from observations with differing bandwidths, and properly accounting for the source dispersion measure, VLBA antenna beam shape, experiment time sampling, and stochastic nature of events. We then apply the framework to combine the results of the V-FASTR and ATA Fly's Eye experiments, demonstrating their complementarity. Expectations for fast transients experiments for the SKA Phase I dish array are then computed, and the impact of large differential bandwidths is discussed., Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) play a decisive role in galaxy evolution, particularly so when operating in a radiatively inefficient mode, where they launch powerful jets that reshape their surroundings. However, identifying them is difficult, since radio observations commonly have resolutions of between 1 arcsec and 10 arcsec, which is equally sensitive to radio emission from star-forming activity and from AGN. Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations allow one to filter out all but the most compact non-thermal emission from radio survey data. The observational and computational demands to do this in large surveys have been, until recently, too high to make such undertakings feasible. Only the recent advent of wide-field observing techniques have facilitated such observations, and we here present the results from a survey of 217 radio sources in the Lockman Hole/XMM field. We describe in detail some new aspects of the calibration, including primary beam correction, multi-source self-calibration, and mosaicing. As a result, we detected 65 out of the 217 radio sources and were able to construct, for the first time, the source counts of VLBI-detected AGN. They indicate that at least 15%-25% of the sub-mJy radio sources are AGN-driven, consistent with recent findings using other AGN selection techniques. We have used ancillary data to investigate the AGN hosts. We find that among the sources nearby enough to be resolved in the optical images, 88% (23/26) could be classified as early-type or bulge-dominated galaxies. While 50% of these sources are correctly represented by the SED of an early-type galaxy, for the rest the best fit was obtained with a heavily extinct starburst template, an effect we ascribe to a degeneracy in the fit. We present the first results from the V-FASTR experiment, a commensal search for fast transient radio bursts using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). V-FASTR is unique in that the widely spaced VLBA antennas provide a discriminant against non-astronomical signals and a mechanism for the localization and identification of events that is not possible with single dishes or short baseline interferometers. Thus far V-FASTR has accumulated over 1300 hours of observation time with the VLBA, between 90 cm and 3 mm wavelength (327 MHz - 86 GHz), providing the first limits on fast transient event rates at high radio frequencies (>1.4 GHz). V-FASTR has blindly detected bright individual pulses from seven known pulsars but has not detected any single-pulse events that would indicate high redshift impulsive bursts of radio emission. At 1.4 GHz, V-FASTR puts limits on fast transient event rates comparable with the PALFA survey at the Arecibo telescope, but generally at lower sensitivities, and comparable to the "fly's eye" survey at the Allen Telescope Array, but with less sky coverage. Recent discoveries of dispersed, non-periodic impulsive radio signals with single-dish radio telescopes have sparked significant interest in exploring the relatively uncharted space of fast transient radio signals. Here we describe V-FASTR, an experiment to perform a blind search for fast transient radio signals using the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). The experiment runs entirely in a commensal mode, alongside normal VLBA observations and operations. It is made possible by the features and flexibility of the DiFX software correlator that is used to process VLBA data. Using the VLBA for this type of experiment offers significant advantages over single-dish experiments, including a larger field of view, the ability to easily distinguish local radio-frequency interference from real signals and the possibility to localize detected events on the sky to milliarcsecond accuracy. We describe our software pipeline, which accepts short integration (~ms) spectrometer data from each antenna in real time during correlation and performs an incoherent dedispersion separately for each antenna, over a range of trial dispersion measures. The dedispersed data are processed by a sophisticated detector and candidate events are recorded. At the end of the correlation, small snippets of the raw data at the time of the events are stored for further analysis. Recent investigations reveal an important new class of transient radio phenomena that occur on sub-millisecond timescales. Often transient surveys' data volumes are too large to archive exhaustively. Instead, an on-line automatic system must excise impulsive interference and detect candidate events in real-time. This work presents a case study using data from multiple geographically distributed stations to perform simultaneous interference excision and transient detection. We present several algorithms that incorporate dedispersed data from multiple sites, and report experiments with a commensal real-time transient detection system on the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA). We test the system using observations of pulsar B0329+54. The multiple-station algorithms enhanced sensitivity for detection of individual pulses. These strategies could improve detection performance for a future generation of geographically distributed arrays such as the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder and the Square Kilometre Array., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures. We observed the near-Earth asteroid 2008 EV5 with the Arecibo and Goldstone planetary radars and the Very Long Baseline Array during December 2008. EV5 rotates retrograde and its overall shape is a 400 /pm 50 m oblate spheroid. The most prominent surface feature is a ridge parallel to the asteroid's equator that is broken by a concavity 150 m in diameter. Otherwise the asteroid's surface is notably smooth on decameter scales. EV5's radar and optical albedos are consistent with either rocky or stony-iron composition. The equatorial ridge is similar to structure seen on the rubble-pile near-Earth asteroid (66391) 1999 KW4 and is consistent with YORP spin-up reconfiguring the asteroid in the past. We interpret the concavity as an impact crater. VLBI observations are a reliable method to identify AGN, since they require high brightness temperatures for a detection to be made. However, because of the tiny fields of view it is unpractical to carry out VLBI observations of many sources using conventional methods. We used an extension of the DiFX software correlator to image with high sensitivity 96 sources in the Chandra Deep Field South, using only 9h of observing time with the VLBA. We detected 20 sources, 8 of which had not been identified as AGN at any other wavelength, despite the comprehensive coverage of this field. The lack of X-ray counterparts to 1/3 of the VLBI-detected sources, despite the sensitivity of co-located X-ray data, demonstrates that X-ray observations cannot be solely relied upon when searching for AGN activity. Surprisingly, we find that sources classified as type 1 QSOs using X-ray data are always detected, in contrast to the 10% radio-loud objects which are found in optically-selected QSOs. Wide-field surveys are a commonly-used method for studying thousands of objects simultaneously, to investigate, e.g., the joint evolution of star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei. VLBI observations can yield valuable input to such studies because they are able to identify AGN. However, VLBI observations of large swaths of the sky are impractical using standard methods, because the fields of view of VLBI observations are of the order of 10" or less. We have embarked on a project to carry out Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of all 96 known radio sources in one of the best-studied areas in the sky, the Chandra Deep Field South (CDFS). The challenge was to develop methods which could significantly reduce the amount of observing (and post-processing) time. We have developed an extension to the DiFX software correlator which allows one to correlate hundreds of positions within the primary beams. This extension enabled us to target many sources, at full resolution and high sensitivity, using only a small amount of observing time. The combination of wide fields-of-view and high sensitivity across the field in this survey is unprecedented. We have observed with the VLBA a single pointing containing the Chandra Deep Field South, in which 96 radio sources were known from previous observations with the ATCA. From our input sample, 20 were detected with the VLBA. The majority of objects have flux densities in agreement with arcsec-scale observations, implying that their radio emission comes from very small regions. One VLBI-detected object had earlier been classified as a star-forming galaxy. Comparing the VLBI detections to sources found in sensitive, co-located X-ray observations we find that X-ray detections are not a good indicator for VLBI detections. We have invented a novel technique to measure the radio image of a pulsar scattered by the interstellar plasma with 0.1 mas resolution. We extend the "secondary spectrum" analysis of parabolic arcs by Stinebring et al. (2001) to very long baseline interferometry and, when the scattering is anisotropic, we are able to map the scattered brightness astrometrically with much higher resolution than the diffractive limit of the interferometer. We employ this technique to measure an extremely anisotropic scattered image of the pulsar B0834+06 at 327 MHz. We find that the scattering occurs in a compact region about 420 pc from the Earth. This image has two components, both essentially linear and nearly parallel. The primary feature, which is about 16 AU long and less than 0.5 AU in width, is highly inhomogeneous on spatial scales as small as 0.05 AU. The second feature is much fainter and is displaced from the axis of the primary feature by about 9 AU. We find that the velocity of the scattering plasma is 16+-10 km/s approximately parallel to the axis of the linear feature. The origin of the observed anisotropy is unclear and we discuss two very different models. It could be, as has been assumed in earlier work, that the turbulence on spatial scales of ~1000 km is homogeneous but anisotropic. However it may be that the turbulence on these scales is homogeneous and isotropic but the anisotropy is produced by highly elongated (filamentary) inhomogeneities of scale 0.05-16 AU., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal

Time-to-science is an important figure of merit for digital instrumentation serving the astronomical community. A digital signal processing (DSP) community is forming that uses shared hardware development, signal processing libraries, and instrument architectures to reduce development time of digital instrumentation and to improve time-to-science for a wide variety of projects. We suggest prioritizing technological development supporting the needs of this nascent DSP community. After outlining several instrument classes that are relying on digital instrumentation development to achieve new science objectives, we identify key areas where technologies pertaining to interoperability and processing flexibility will reduce the time, risk, and cost of developing the digital instrumentation for radio astronomy. These areas represent focus points where support of general-purpose, open-source development for a DSP community should be prioritized in the next decade. Contributors to such technological development may be centers of support for this DSP community, science groups that contribute general-purpose DSP solutions as part of their own instrumentation needs, or engineering groups engaging in research that may be applied to next-generation DSP instrumentation., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Astro2010 Decadal Survey White Paper in TEC: Technology Development

We report on VLBA astrometry and CXO imaging of PSR J0538+2817 in the supernova remnant S147. We measure a parallax distance of $1.47^{+0.42}_{-0.27}$kpc along with a high-precision proper motion, giving a transverse velocity $V_\perp=400^{+114}_{-73}$km/s. A small extended wind nebula is detected around the pulsar; the symmetry axis of this structure suggests that the spin axis lies $12\arcdeg\pm4\arcdeg$ from the velocity vector (2-D), but the emission is too faint for robust model independent statements. The neutron star is hot, consistent with the young ~40kyr kinematic age. The pulsar progenitor is likely a runaway from a nearby cluster, with NGC 1960 (M36) a leading candidate., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, ApJ accepted

We present VLBA observations of the ground-state hydroxyl masers in W3(OH) at 0.02 km s-1 spectral resolution. Over 250 masers are detected, including 56 Zeeman pairs. Lineshapes are predominantly Gaussian or combinations of several Gaussians, with normalized deviations typically of the same magnitude as in masers in other species. Typical FWHM maser linewidths are 0.15 to 0.38 km s-1 and are larger in the 1665 MHz transition than in the other three ground-state transitions. The satellite-line 1612 and 1720 MHz masers show no evidence of sigma^+/-2,3 components. The spatial positions of most masers are seen to vary across the line profile, with many spots showing clear, organized positional gradients. Equivalent line-of-sight velocity gradients in the plane of the sky typically range from 0.01 to 1 km s-1 AU-1 (i.e., positional gradients of 1 to 100 AU (km s-1)-1). Small velocity gradients in the 1667 MHz transition support theoretical predictions that 1667 MHz masers appear in regions with small velocity shifts along the amplification length. We report on Chandra ACIS imaging of the pulsar wind nebula (PWN) of the young Vela-like PSR B1706-44, which shows the now common pattern of an equatorial wind and polar jets. The structure is particularly rich, showing a relativistically boosted termination shock, jets with strong confinement, a surrounding radio/X-ray PWN and evidence for a quasi-static `bubble nebula'. The structures trace the pulsar spin geometry and illuminate its possible relation to SNR G343.1-2.3. Many features of the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) contrive to make it the best telescope for pulsar astrometry. The measured proper motions and parallaxes allow distances and transverse velocities to be determined. These in turn provide clues to questions spanning nuclear astrophysics on scales of 10^-23 m to the distribution of gas in the Galaxy on scales of 10^20 m. Three pulsars are discussed in this paper. Among pulsars, B0950+08 has the most accurate VLBI-determined parallax. B1133+16 has a very high transverse velocity; its radial velocity is discussed. B0656+14 is a thermally detected neutron star. Determination of its distance has allowed its radius to be measured and its association with the Monogem ring supernova remnant (SNR) to be established, allowing a long-standing question in cosmic ray astrophysics to be addressed., Comment: 7 pages. The Monogem ring is a bright, diffuse, 25-degree-diameter supernova remnant easily visible in soft X-ray images of the sky. Projected within the ring is a young radio pulsar, PSR B0656+14. An association between the remnant and pulsar has been considered, but was seemingly ruled out by the direction and magnitude of the pulsar proper motion and by a distance estimate that placed the pulsar twice as far from Earth as the remnant. Here we show that in fact the pulsar was born very close to the center of the expanding remnant, both in distance and projection. The inferred pulsar and remnant ages are in good agreement. The conclusion that the pulsar and remnant were born in the same supernova explosion is nearly inescapable. The remnant distance and age are in remarkable concordance with the predictions of a model for the primary cosmic ray energy spectrum in which the `knee' feature is produced by a single dominant source., Comment: 4 pages, to appear in the Astrophys. Very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) provides the resolution needed to make precision measurements of a pulsar's parallax and proper motion. In making these measurements, the astronomer is faced with difficult calibration problems and a paucity of strong point-like calibrators that ultimately limit the accuracy of parallax measurements of even the brightest pulsars. A new technique to calibrate away the effects of the ionosphere, the dominant source of phase error at frequencies below 5 GHz, has led to the new measurements of nine pulsar parallaxes to 100 microarcsecond or better precision., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures, to appear in ASP Conf. We determined the distances to nine pulsars by parallax measurements using the NRAO Very Long Baseline Array, doubling the number of pulsars with accurate distance measurements. Broadband phase modeling was used to calibrate the varying dispersive effects of the ionosphere and remove the resulting phase errors from the phase-referenced VLBI data. The resulting parallaxes have a typical accuracy of 100 microarcseconds or better, yielding distances measurements as accurate as 2%. A new technique has been developed to remove the ionosphere's distorting effects from low frequency VLBI data. By fitting dispersive and non-dispersive components to the phases of multi-frequency data, the ionosphere can be effectively removed from the data without the use of {\em a priori} calibration information. This technique, along with the new gating capability of the VLBA correlator, was used to perform accurate astrometry on pulsar B0950+08, resulting in a much improved measurement of this pulsar's proper motion ($\mu_{\alpha} = -1.6 \pm 0.4$ mas/yr, $\mu_{\delta} = 29.5 \pm 0.5$ mas/yr) and parallax ($\pi = 3.6 \pm 0.3$ mas). This puts the pulsar at a distance of $280 \pm 25$ parsecs, about twice as far as previous estimates, but in good agreement with models of the electron density in the local bubble., Comment: 5 pages, Latex with AASTEX.
