In this report, the synthesis of high-entropy wolframite oxide (CoCuNiFeZn)$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$WO$_4$ through standard solid-state route followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS) and their structural, microstructural, and thermoelectric properties are investigated. X-ray diffraction pattern followed by pattern matching refinement shows monoclinic structure with volume of the unit cell decreasing with increasing Ga content. The optical band gap for these oxides shows a cocktail effect in high entropy configuration. The Seebeck coefficient indicates electrons as dominating charge carriers with a non-degenerate behavior. The electrical resistivity decreases with increasing temperature depicting a semiconducting nature. Thermal conductivity in high-entropy samples ($\kappa\sim$2.1 W/mK @ 300\,K) is significantly lower as compared to MgWO$_4$ ($\kappa\sim$11.5 W/mK @ 300\,K), which can be explained by the strong phonon scattering due to large lattice disorder in high entropy configuration. Development of new high-entropy oxides having configurational entropy dominating the phase stability has become a hot topic since the discovery of rock salt structure entropy-stabilized (ES)(MgCoNiCuZn)O in 2015. Herein, we report a set of novel entropy-stabilized fluorite oxides: Zr0.2Hf0.2Ce0.2Sn0.2Mn0.2O2-{\delta}, Zr0.2Hf0.2Ti0.2Mn0.2Ce0.2O2-{\delta}, Zr0.225Hf0.225Ti0.225Mn0.225Ce0.1O2-{\delta}, and Zr0.2Hf0.2Ti0.2Mn0.2Ce0.1Ta0.05Fe0.05O2-{\delta} synthesized using standard solid-state reaction. These compounds have been investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy techniques to discern their structural, microstructural, and chemical properties. The configurational-entropy dominated phase stability and hence the entropy stabilization of the compounds is confirmed by cyclic heat treatments. The mismatch in the ionic radii and oxidation state of the cations are the key factors in achieving a single-phase fluorite structure. Further, screening of physical properties including thermal conductivity, optical band gap, magnetic properties, and impedance spectroscopy is discussed. Thermal conductivity of 1.4-1.7 Wm-1K-1 is observed at 300 K and remains mostly invariant across a wide temperature range (300K-1073K), favorable for thermal barrier coating applications. These ES samples have an optical band gap of 1.6-1.8 eV, enabling light absorption across the visible spectrum and hence could be promising for photocatalytic applications. The impedance spectroscopy data of the entropy-stabilized samples reveal the presence of electronic contributions with small activation energy (0.3-0.4 eV) across a temperature range of 298K-423K. Polarization plays crucial role in light-matter interactions; hence its overall manipulation is an essential key to unlock the versatility of light manufacturing, especially in femtosecond laser direct writing. Existing polarization-shaping techniques, however, only focus on the manipulation in transverse plane of a light beam, namely a two-dimensional control. In this paper, we propose a novel passive strategy that exploits a class of femtosecond laser written space varying birefringent elements, to shape the polarization state along the optical path. As a demonstration, we generate a three-dimensional structured Bessel beam whose linear polarization state is slowly evolving along the focus (typ. 90 degrees within 60 lightwave periods). Such a "helical polarized" Bessel beam allows imprinting "twisted nanogratings" in SiO2 resulting in an extrinsic optical chirality at a micrometric scale, which owns a high optical rotation. A R&D program is developed at the ALTO facility to provide new beams of exotic neutron-rich nuclei, as intense as possible. In the framework of European projects, it has been shown that the use of refractory targets with nanometric structure allows us to obtain beams of nuclei unreachable until now. The first parameter to be controlled in the processing to obtain targets with a homogeneous nanostructure is the grinding of uranium dioxide, down to 100 nm grain size. In this study, dry and wet grinding routes are studied and the powders are analyzed in terms of phase stabilization, specific surface area and grain morphology. It appears that the grinding, as well dry as wet, leads to the decrease of the particle size. The oxidation of UO2 is observed whatever the grinding. However, the dry grinding is the most efficient and leads to the oxidation of UO2 into U4O9 and U3O7 whose quantities increase with the grinding time while crystallite sizes decrease.

The optimization of the microstructure of the UCx target is a key point since many years in the field of ISOL method. The ultimate goal is to facilitate the release of the fission products, especially those with short half-lives. Fourteen UCx samples were synthetized from different uranium and carbon sources using three mixing protocols. All carburized samples were systematically characterized in terms of nature and proportion phases, grain and aggregate size, open and close porosity proportion and open pore size distribution. Our results were analysed using a multivariate statistical approach in order to remove any subjective bias. Strong correlations between the physicochemical characteristics of the samples as well as the impact of the synthesis process have been highlighted. In particular, using carbon nanotubes as carbon source combined with a new method of mixing is the key parameter to limit the sintering and to obtain samples with small grains and a high porosity well distributed over small pores. Moreover the microstructure obtained proved to be stable at high temperature.

New Target-Ion Source Systems combining a target and a catcher material are developed in the radioactive beam community, in particular at GANIL, in order to maximise the yield of very short lived atoms by minimizing the atom-to-ion transformation time. The aim of this study is to characterize the release properties of 81Rb collected on two graphite catchers and two carbon nanotube catchers. The release fractions were measured at various catcher-heating temperatures and then compared to the analytical expressions relevant to each catcher. This comparison led to the extraction of the pre-exponential factor (D0) and the activation energy (Eact) involved in the diffusion coefficient of Rb for three carbon microstructures. All these data allowed to define an ideal catcher which could be made of aligned carbon nanotubes of small diameter and oriented in order to collect all the 81Rb atoms produced by the target but also to release them efficiently.

We conducted an inter-laboratory study of a metallic glass whose main component is nickel. Two determinations of the mass fractions of the different elements present within the sample were asked to the participants: one at an acceleration voltage of 15 or 20 kV and another one at 5 kV. We compare the mass fractions obtained from wavelength dispersive (WDS) and energy dispersive spectrometries (EDS) and also try to find an influence of the kind of EDS detector and its entrance window, the background subtraction method, the use or not of standards as well as the quantification method. Both means of WDS and EDS mass fractions are close to the reference values. The dispersion of the results was larger at 5 kV than at 15-20 kV owing to the use of the L lines rather than K lines and to the lowest collected intensities. There is an exception with the case of boron because at the lowest voltage, the excitation condition is more favourable for the production of the K line. It appears that the dispersion of the results is larger with EDS than with WDS but it was not possible to find a correlation between the large dispersion and one of the considered experimental parameters and quantification factors. Thus, one can think that electron microprobes are inherently better for the determination of mass fractions or that the implementation of quantitative analysis must be optimized for some cases, especially in SEMs., Comment: Members of the GN-MEBA, SEMPA users group and Belgian laboratories coordinated by Universite Catholique de Louvain are thanked for their participation to this inter-laboratory study
