The vertebrate assemblages of the Albian to Cenomanian Wayan Formation of southeastern Idaho and southwestern Montana's coeval Vaughn Member of the Blackleaf Formation are dominated by the small, burrowing orodromine dinosaur Oryctodromeus cubicularis. Here, we describe in detail the osteology of Oryctodromeus based on new specimens from Idaho and Montana that add substantially to the preliminary description of the types from Montana, and provide a suite of additional diagnostic characters for the taxon: ilium with elongate preacetabular process; elongate cervical vertebra centra with an anteroposterior length 1.6 times the dorsoventral height; elongate dorsal vertebra centra with an anteroposterior length 1.4 times the dorsoventral height; more than 55 elongate caudal vertebrae enveloped in hypaxial and epaxial ossified tendons; and a femoral head on an elongate neck—similar to that of Koreanosaurus—projecting from the greater trochanter at about 35°. The tail, comprising two-thirds of the animal's roughly 3 meters length, and associated tendon sheaths in the axial column indicate greater flexibility than previously supposed for ossified tendons or, alternatively, suggest that the Oryctodromeus burrows had separate, or multiple entrances and exits. The elongated and angled femoral head likely facilitated digging via a braced splayed-leg posture. Our phylogenetic analysis incorporates new characteristics and supports the monophyly of Orodrominae, a clade of neornithischian dinosaurs from the middle to Late Cretaceous of Asia and western North America that utilized burrowing. The Upper Cretaceous (Turonian) Bissekty Formation of Uzbekistan has yielded many isolated bones and teeth representing a variety of non-avian theropod dinosaurs. A pedal phalanx II-2 indicates the presence of a dromaeosaurid theropod that attained a larger body size than any previously known member of that clade. The same formation also yielded a large maxillary fragment that has recently been described as a neovenatorid carcharodontosaurian (Ulughbegsaurus uzbekistanensis). However, this specimen lacks unambiguously diagnostic features of that clade, and its purported carcharodontosaurian characters are either taphonomic artefacts or also shared by dromaeosaurids. Thus, the phylogenetic relationships of Uleghbegsaurus uzbekistanensis remain uncertain. A giant dromaeosaurid occurred together with the medium-sized tyrannosauroid Timurlengia euotica in the Bissekty assemblage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A small faunule of hypercalcified agelasiid demosponges has been recovered from outcrops of the Silurian Heceta Formation on Prince of Wales Island in southeastern Alaska. Included are abundant Girtyocoeliana epiporata (Rigby and Potter, 1986), of the Girtyocoeliidae Finks and Rigby, 2004; fragments of Alaskaspongiella laminosa n. gen. and sp., Polyplacospongia nodosa n. gen. and sp., and Monolaminospongia gigantia n. gen. and sp., of the Auriculospongiidae Termier and Termier, 1977, and Cladospongia alaskensis n. gen. and sp., Virgulaspongia uniforma n. gen. and sp., and Stipespongia laminata n. gen. and sp. of the Preperonidellidae Finks and Rigby, 2004. Also included are a few fossils of uncertain taxonomic placement, including Turbospongia biperforata n. gen. and sp., along with a small, chambered, tubular fragment and several porous tubular stems that may be additional poriferans.
