Radiative corrections which remove accidental degeneracy in the spectrum of the relativistic hydrogen atom and lead to the modification of the Coulomb law, are calculated within the novel approach, based on the exact solution of the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential. It is shown that the Dirac equation with the Coulomb potential can be solved using the algebra of the three spinor invariants of the Dirac equation without the involvement of the methods of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The Dirac Hamiltonian is invariant with respect to the rotation transformation, which indicates the dynamical (hidden) symmetry $ SU(2) $ of the Dirac equation. The total symmetry of the Dirac equation is the symmetry $ SO(3) \otimes SU(2) $. The generator of the $ SO(3) $ symmetry group is given by the total momentum operator, and the generator of $ SU(2) $ group is given by the rotation of the vector-states in the spinor space, determined by the Dirac, Johnson-Lippmann, and the new spinor invariants. It is shown that using algebraic approach to the Dirac problem allows one to calculate the eigenstates and eigenenergies of the relativistic hydrogen atom and reveals the fundamental role of the principal quantum number as an independent number, even though it is represented as the combination of other quantum numbers., Comment: 16 pages, no figures

Solutions of the Dirac equation for an electron in the Coulomb potential are obtained using operator invariants of the equation, namely the Dirac, Johnson-Lippmann and recently found new invariant. It is demonstrated that these operators are the spin invariants. The generalized invariant is constructed and the exact general solution of the Dirac equation are found. In particular, the explicit expressions of the bispinors corresponding to the three complete sets of the invariants, their eigenvalues and quantum numbers are calculated. It is shown that the general solution of one center Coulomb Dirac equation contains free parameters. Changing one or more of these parameters, one can transform one solution of the Dirac equation into any other. It is shown for the first time that these invariants determine electron spatial probability amplitude and spin polarization in each quantum state. Electron probability densities and spin polarizations are explicitly calculated in the general form for several electron states in the hydrogen-like energy spectrum. Spatial distributions of these characteristics are shown to depend essentially on the invariant set, demonstrating, in spite of the accidental degeneracy of energy levels, physical difference of the states corresponding to different spin invariants., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

In frame of Dirac quantum field theory that describes electrons and positrons as elementary excitations of the spinor field, the generalized operator of the spin-orbit interaction is obtained using non-relativistic approximation in the Hamilton operator of the spinor field taking into account the presence of an external potential. This operator is shown to contain a new term in addition to the known ones. By an example of a model potential in the form of a quantum well, it is demonstrated that the Schroedinger equation with the generalized spin-orbit interaction operator describes all spin states obtained directly from the Dirac equation. The dependence of the spin-orbit interaction on the spin states in quasi-two-dimensional systems of electrons localized in a quantum well is analyzed. It is demonstrated that the electric current in the quantum well layer induces the spin polarization of charge carriers near the boundary surfaces of the layer, with the polarization of the charge carriers being opposite at the different surfaces. This phenomenon appears due to the spin-orbit interaction and is known as the spin Hall effect, which was observed experimentally in heterostructures with the corresponding geometry., Comment: 23 pages

All relativistic corrections to the Scr{\"o}dinger equation which determine the interlink between spin and orbit of moving particles, are directly calculated from the Dirac equation using the spin invariant operators. It is shown that among the second order corrections there are not only the well-known Darwin and Thomas terms, but also the new ones. Only with the account of the latter corrections the energies found with the obtained spin-orbit interaction operator, coincide with the energies of the Dirac equation exact solution. The problem of electron spectrum in the quantum well type structures is studied in details and the physical reasons for the appearance of spin-orbit interaction operators in the Dresselhaus or Rashba form, are analyzed., Comment: 23 pages

The general solution of the Dirac equation for quasi-two-dimensional electrons confined in an asymmetric quantum well, is found. The energy spectrum of such a system is exactly calculated using special unitary transformation and shown to depend on the electron spin polarization. The general solution, being the only one, contains free parameters, whose variation continuously transforms one known particular solution into another. As an example, two different cases are considered in detailL: electron in a deep and in a strongly asymmetric shallow quantum well. The effective mass renormalized by relativistic corrections and Bychkov-Rashba coefficients are analytically obtained for both cases. The general solution allows - independently on the existence of the spin invariants - to establish conditions at which a specific (accompanied or non-accompanied by Rashba splitting) spin state can be realized. In principle, this opens new possibilities of the spin degree of freedom control in spintronics via synthesis of heteroctructures of the desirable properties., Comment: 20 pages, 2 figures

The problem of the spin states corresponding to the solutions of Dirac equation is studied. In particular, the three sets of the eigenfunctions of Dirac equation are obtained. In each set the wavefunction is at the same time the eigenfunction of one of the three spin operators, which do not commute with each other, but do commute with the Dirac Hamiltonian. This means that the eigenfunctions of Dirac equation describe three independent spin states. The energy spectrum is calculated for each of these sets for the case of quasi-two-dimensional electrons in a quantum well. It is shown that the standard Rashba spin-orbit interaction takes place in one of such states only. In another one this interaction is not formed at all, and for the third one it leads to the band spectrum which is anisotropic in the plane domain of the propagation of a free electron and is different from the isotropic spectrum of Rashba type.

We show that in anharmonic one-dimensional crystal lattices pairing of electrons or holes in a localized bisolectron state is possible due to coupling between the charges and the lattice deformation that can overcompensate the Coulomb repulsion. Such localized soliton-like states appear as traveling ground bound singlet states of two extra electrons in the potential well created by the local lattice deformation. We also find the first excited localized state of two electrons in a soliton-like lattice deformation potential well given by a triplet state of two electrons. The results of the analytical study of interacting electrons in a lattice with cubic anharmonicity are compared with the numerical simulations of two electrons in an anharmonic lattice taking into account of the (local) Hubbard electron-electron repulsion. We qualitative agreement between both approaches for a broad interval of parameter values. For illustration we give expressions for the bisolectron binding energy with parameter values that are typical for biological macromolecules. We estimate critical values of Coulomb repulsion where the bisolectron becomes unbound., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We show that two added, excess electrons with opposite spins in one-dimensional crystal lattices with quartic anharmonicity may form a bisolectron, which is a localized bound state of the paired electrons to a soliton-like lattice deformation. It is also shown that when the Coulomb repulsion is included, the wave function of the bisolectron has two maxima, and such a state is stable in lattices with strong enough electron-(phonon/soliton) lattice coupling. Furthermore the energy of the bisolectron is shown to be lower than the energy of the state with two separate, independent electrons, as even with account of the Coulomb repulsion the bisolectron binding energy is positive

We show that when anharmonicity is added to the electron-phonon interaction it facilitates electron pairing in a localized state. Such localized state appears as singlet state of two electrons bound with the traveling local lattice soliton distortion which survives when Coulomb repulsion is included.

We study here polaron (soliton) states of electrons or holes in a model describing carbon-type nanotubes. In the Hamiltonian of the system we take into account the electron-phonon interaction that arises from the deformation dependencies of both the on-site and the hopping interaction energies. Using an adiabatic approximation, we derive the equations for self-trapped electron states in zigzag nanotubes. We find the ground states of an electron in such a system and show that the polaron states can have different symmetries depending on the strength of the electron-phonon coupling. Namely, at relatively weak coupling the polarons possess quasi-one-dimensional (quasi-1D) properties and have an azimuthal symmetry. When the coupling constant exceeds some critical value, the azimuthal symmetry breaks down and the polaron spreads out in more than one dimension. We also study polarons that are formed by the electrons in the conducting band (or by holes in the valence band) in semiconducting carbon nanotubes. We show that their properties are more complex than those of quasi-1D ground state polarons. In particular, polarons in semiconducting carbon nanotubes possess an inner structure: being self-trapped along the nanotube axis they exhibit some modulations around the nanotube., Comment: 27 pages 1 figure

We study numerically self-trapped (polaron) states of quasiparticles (electrons, holes or excitons) in a deformable nanotube formed by a hexagonal lattice, wrapped into a cylinder (carbon- and boron nitride-type nanotube structures). We present a Hamiltonian for such a system taking into account an electron-phonon interaction, and determine conditions under which the lowest energy states are polarons.We compute a large class of numerical solutions of this model for a wide range of the parameters. We show that at not too strong electron-phonon coupling, the system admits ring-like localized solutions wrapped around the nanotube (the charge carrier is localized along the nanotube axis and uniformly distributed with respect to the azimuthal coordinate). At stronger coupling, solutions are localized on very few lattice sites in both directions of the nanotube. The transition from one type solution to the other one depends on the diameter of the nanotube. We show that for the values of the carbon nanotube parameters, the polarons have a ring-like structure wrapped around the nanotube with a profile resembling that of the nonlinear Schrodinger soliton., Comment: 16 pages, 21 figures

We study the self-trapping of quasiparticles (electrons, holes, excitons, etc) in a molecular chain with the structure of a ring, taking into account the electron-phonon interaction and the radial and tangential deformations of the chain. A discrete system of equations is obtained and solved numerically. The analytical solutions for the wave function of a quasiparticle and for the molecule displacements that determine the distortion of the ring, are also obtained and solved in the continuum approximation. The numerical solutions of the system of discrete nonlinear equations reveals several regimes of quasiparticle localisation in the chain which depend on the values of the parameters of the system. We investigate some aspects of the soliton dynamics in an alpha-helical protein macromolecule within the steric Davydov-Scott model. Our main objective is to elucidate the important role of the helical symmetry in the formation, stability and dynamical properties of Davydov's solitons in an alpha-helix. We show, analytically and numerically, that the corresponding system of nonlinear equations admits several types of stationary soliton solutions and that solitons which preserve helical symmetry are dynamically unstable: once formed, they decay rapidly when they propagate. On the other hand, the soliton which spontaneously breaks the local translational and helical symmetries possess the lowest energy and is a robust localized entity. We also demonstrate that this soliton is the result of an hybridization of the quasiparticle states from the two lowest degenerate bands and has an inner structure which can be described as a modulated multi-hump amplitude distribution of excitations on individual spines. The complex and composite structure of the soliton manifests itself distinctly when the soliton is moving and some interspine oscillations take place. Such a soliton structure and the interspine oscillations have previosly been observed numerically in [A.C. Scott, Phys.Rev. A 26 578 (1982)]. Here we argue that the solitons studied by A. Scott, are hybrid solitons and that the oscillations arise due to the helical symmetry of the system and result from the motion of the soliton along the $\alpha$-helix.
