Search

We report the discovery of Cerberus, an extremely red object detected with the MIRI Deep Imaging Survey (MIDIS) observations in the F1000W filter of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. The object is detected at signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) ∼ 6, with F1000W ∼ 27 mag, and undetected in the NIRCam data gathered by the JWST Advanced Deep Extragalactic Survey (JADES), fainter than the 30.0–30.5 mag 5 σ detection limits in individual bands, as well as in the MIDIS F560W ultradeep data (∼29 mag, 5 σ ). Photometrically derived stellar masses are known to suffer from systematic uncertainties, particularly due to nebular emission contributions to the spectral energy distribution (SED). Using James Webb Space Telescope NIRCam imaging from the CAnadian NIRISS Unbiased Cluster Survey, we introduce a comparison study of photometrically derived redshifts and stellar masses based on two photometric catalogs of the same field spanning ∼0.4–4.5 μ m: one consisting solely of wide band photometry, and another employing a combination of wide and medium band photometry. We find that ∼70% of likely line emitters have consistent photometric redshifts between both catalogs, with a median stellar mass difference between the two catalogs of 5. These systematic differences caused by the poor spectral resolution of wide bands have implications for both ongoing and future planned observing programs that determine stellar mass and other physical properties of high-redshift galaxies solely via wide band photometry.

We utilize serendipitous observations from the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) and the Zwicky Transient Facility in addition to targeted follow-up observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory (LCO) and Liverpool Telescope to analyze the first observed instance of cometary activity by the newly discovered Jupiter-family comet C/2023 RN _3 (ATLAS), whose orbital dynamics place it close to residing on a Centaur-like orbit. Across our 7 month baseline, we observe an epoch of cometary activity commencing in 2023 August with an increase in brightness of >5.4 mag. The lightcurve of 2023 RN _3 indicates the presence of continuous cometary activity across our observations, suggesting the onset of a new period of sustained activity. We find no evidence of any outbursts on top of the observed brightening nor do we find any significant color evolution across our observations. 2023 RN _3 is visibly extended in LCO and Liverpool Telescope observations, indicating the presence of a spatially extended coma. Numerical integration of 2023 RN _3 's orbit reveals the comet to have recently undergone a slight increase in semimajor axis due to a planetary encounter with Jupiter; however, whether this orbital change could trigger 2023 RN _3 's cometary activity is unclear. Our estimate for the maximum dust production metric of Af ρ ∼ 400 cm is consistent with previous measurements for the Jupiter-family comet and Centaur populations.

Comets, relics from the early solar system, consist of dust and ice. The ice sublimates as comets approach the Sun, ejecting dust from their nuclei seen as activity. Different volatiles sublimate at different Sun–comet distances and eject dust of unique sizes, structures, and compositions. In this study, we present new polarimetric observations of Oort cloud comet C/2017 K2 (Pan-STARRS) in R- and I -filter domains before, during, and after its crossover of the water-ice sublimation regime at phase angles of 15.°9, 10.°5, and 20.°0, respectively. Combining multiband optical imaging data covering a wide range of heliocentric distances (∼14−2.3 au), we aim to characterize the pre-perihelion evolution of cometary activity as well as the properties of its coma dust. Two discontinuous brightening events were observed: at ∼6 au presumably associated with changes in CO-like supervolatile ice activity, and at ∼2.9 au when water ice took over. Particularly, the latter activation is accompanied by changes in coma morphology and color whose trends differ between the inner (∼10 ^3 km) and outer (∼10 ^4 km) parts of the coma. No polarimetric discontinuities on the comet were observed over the inner coma region, all epochs showing phase-angle and wavelength dependencies compatible with those of active comets observed in similar observing geometry. During this period, the underlying dust continuum overwhelmed H α emission at around 656.3 nm, suggesting less water ice on the comet’s surface than expected. We discuss K2's coma environment by combining numerical simulations of light scattered by dust and place the observations within the context of the comet’s evolution.

Centaurs are small solar system objects on chaotic orbits in the giant planet region, forming an evolutionary continuum with the Kuiper Belt objects and Jupiter-family comets. Some Centaurs are known to exhibit cometary activity, though unlike comets, this activity tends not to correlate with heliocentric distance, and the mechanism behind it is currently poorly understood. We utilize serendipitous observations from the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, Zwicky Transient Facility, Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System, Dark Energy Survey, and Gaia in addition to targeted follow-up observations from the Las Cumbres Observatory, TRAnsiting Planets and PlanetesImals Small Telescope South (TRAPPIST-South), and Gemini North telescope to analyze an unexpected brightening exhibited by the known active Centaur (2060) Chiron in 2021. This is highly indicative of a cometary outburst. As of 2023 February, Chiron had still not returned to its prebrightening magnitude. We find Chiron's rotational lightcurve, phase curve effects, and possible high-albedo surface features to be unlikely causes of this observed brightening. We consider the most likely cause to be an epoch of either new or increased cometary activity, though we cannot rule out a possible contribution from Chiron's reported ring system, such as a collision of as-yet-unseen satellites shepherding the rings. We find no evidence for a coma in our Gemini or TRAPPIST-South observations, though this does not preclude the possibility that Chiron is exhibiting a coma that is too faint for observation or constrained to the immediate vicinity of the nucleus.

We study 31 little red dots (LRD) detected by JADES/NIRCam and covered by the SMILES/MIRI survey, of which ∼70% are detected in the two bluest MIRI bands and 40% in redder MIRI filters. The median/quartiles redshifts are $z={6.9}_{5.9}^{7.7}$ (55% spectroscopic). The spectral slopes flatten in the rest-frame near-infrared, consistent with a 1.6 μ m stellar bump but bluer than direct pure emission from active galactic nuclei (AGN) tori. The apparent dominance of stellar emission at these wavelengths for many LRDs expedites stellar mass estimation: the median/quartiles are $\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }={9.4}_{9.1}^{9.7}$ . The number density of LRDs is 10 ^−4.0±0.1 Mpc ^−3 , accounting for 14% ± 3% of the global population of galaxies with similar redshifts and masses. The rest-frame near-/mid-infrared (2–4 μ m) spectral slope reveals significant amounts of warm dust (bolometric attenuation ∼3–4 mag). Our spectral energy distribution modeling implies the presence of 10 mag. We find a wide variety in the nature of LRDs. However, the best-fitting models for many of them correspond to extremely intense and compact starburst galaxies with mass-weighted ages 5–10 Myr, very efficient in producing dust, with their global energy output dominated by the direct (in the flat rest-frame ultraviolet and optical spectral range) and dust-recycled emission from OB stars with some contribution from an obscured AGN (in the infrared).

Entering the era of large-scale galaxy surveys, which will deliver unprecedented amounts of photometric and spectroscopic data, there is a growing need for more efficient, data-driven, and less model-dependent techniques to analyze the spectral energy distribution of galaxies. In this work, we demonstrate that by taking advantage of manifold learning approaches, we can estimate spectroscopic features of large samples of galaxies from their broadband photometry when spectroscopy is available only for a fraction of the sample. This will be done by applying the self-organizing map algorithm on broadband colors of galaxies and mapping partially available spectroscopic information into the trained maps. In this pilot study, we focus on estimating the 4000 Å break in a magnitude-limited sample of galaxies in the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) field. We also examine this method to predict the H δ _A index given our available spectroscopic measurements. We use observed galaxy colors ( u,g,r,i,z,Y,J,H ), as well as spectroscopic measurements for a fraction of the sample from the LEGA-C and z COSMOS spectroscopic surveys to estimate this feature for our parent photometric sample. We recover the D4000 feature for galaxies that only have broadband colors with uncertainties about twice the uncertainty of the employed spectroscopic surveys. Using these measurements, we observe a positive correlation between D4000 and the stellar mass of the galaxies in our sample with weaker D4000 features for higher-redshift galaxies at fixed stellar masses. These can be explained by the downsizing scenario for the formation of galaxies and the decrease in their specific star formation rate as well as the aging of their stellar populations over this time period.

In this work, we present the longest photometric monitoring of up to 1200 hr of the strongly variable brown dwarf binaries Luhman 16 AB and provide evidence of ±5% variability on a timescale of several to hundreds of hours for this object. We show that short-period rotational modulation around 5 hr ( k = 1 wavenumber) and 2.5 hr ( k = 2 wavenumber) dominate the variability under 10 hr, where the planetary-scale wave model composed of k = 1 and k = 2 waves provides good fits to both the periodograms and light curve. In particular, models consisting of three to four sine waves could explain the variability of the light-curve durations up to 100 hr. We show that the relative range of the k = 2 periods is narrower compared to the k = 1 periods. Using simple models of zonal banding in solar system giants, we suggest that the difference in period range arises from the difference in wind-speed distribution at low and mid-to-high latitudes in the atmosphere. Last, we show that Luhman 16 AB also exhibits long-period ±5% variability, with periods ranging from 15 hr up to 100 hr over the longest monitoring of this object. Our results for the k = 1 and k = 2 waves and long-period evolution are consistent with previous 3D atmosphere simulations, demonstrating that both latitude-dependent waves and slow-varying atmospheric features are potentially present in Luhman 16 AB atmospheres and are a significant contribution to the light-curve modulation over hundreds of rotations.

We report comet-like activity on the outer main-belt asteroid 2005 XR _132 discovered by the Lulin One-meter Telescope in early 2021 April. A series of follow-up observations were triggered to characterize the morphology and brightness variation of 2005 XR _132 . Long-term photometric data of the 2020 perihelion return reveal a 2 mag fading in 120 days, starting 20 days postperihelion, attributed to decreased cometary activity. Even though no variation indicative of the rotational period can be found in our data, we infer an a / b axial ratio of 1.32, given that the lower limit of rotational amplitude is 0.3 mag. A visible spectrum and broadband color support that 2005 XR _132 has a reflectance feature similar to a BR-type Centaur object. The syndyne and synchrone simulations reveal a low-speed dust ejecta consisting of millimeter-sized dust grains released shortly after the perihelion passage. The Lucy LOng Range Reconnaissance Imager (L’LORRI) took 1549 images of the Didymos–Dimorphos binary system, starting 12 hr before the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impact event on 2022 September 26 and ending 24 hr after it. The Lucy imaging campaign provided pre-impact monitoring of the baseline brightness of the Didymos system, as well as intensive 1 s cadence imaging starting 3 minutes prior to impact and extending until 4 minutes after impact, and then continued monitoring at increasing cadences and image exposure times to measure the Didymos system brightness changes produced by ejecta released during the impact. One of the L’LORRI images encompassed the exact time when the DART spacecraft impacted Dimorphos, but there is no evidence of a thermally generated optical flash in the image. L’LORRI observed a shell of fast-moving ejecta, and we derive a range of projected speeds (∼0.26–3.6 km s ^−1 ) for that material. The much slower moving ejecta (≲1 m s ^−1 ) stayed within a single L’LORRI pixel for the entire duration of the Lucy-DART program. We find that the slow ejecta were responsible for 57.4% ± 2.2% of the total post-impact brightness increase measured by L’LORRI, while the fast ejecta were responsible for 42.6% ± 2.3% of the post-impact brightness increase. The initial brightness increase relative to the pre-impact Didymos system brightness was significantly smaller for L’LORRI compared to that measured by some ground-based observers, which is plausibly explained by differences in phase angles and different responses to sodium emission depending on the camera spectral bandwidths.

We present the discovery of Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1, the least luminous known satellite of the Milky Way, which is estimated to have an absolute V -band magnitude of $+{2.2}_{-0.3}^{+0.4}$ mag, equivalent to a total stellar mass of ${16}_{-5}^{+6}$ M _⊙ . Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 was uncovered in the deep, wide-field Ultraviolet Near Infrared Optical Northern Survey (UNIONS) and is consistent with an old ( τ > 11 Gyr), metal-poor ([Fe/H] ∼ −2.2) stellar population at a heliocentric distance of ∼10 kpc. Despite its being compact ( r _h = 3 ± 1 pc) and composed of few stars, we confirm the reality of Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 with Keck II/DEIMOS follow-up spectroscopy and identify 11 radial velocity members, eight of which have full astrometric data from Gaia and are co-moving based on their proper motions. Based on these 11 radial velocity members, we derive an intrinsic velocity dispersion of ${3.7}_{-1.0}^{+1.4}$ km s ^−1 but some caveats preclude this value from being interpreted as a direct indicator of the underlying gravitational potential at this time. Primarily, the exclusion of the largest velocity outlier from the member list drops the velocity dispersion to ${1.9}_{-1.1}^{+1.4}$ km s ^−1 , and the subsequent removal of an additional outlier star produces an unresolved velocity dispersion. While the presence of binary stars may be inflating the measurement, the possibility of a significant velocity dispersion makes Ursa Major III/UNIONS 1 a high-priority candidate for multi-epoch spectroscopic follow-ups to deduce the true nature of this incredibly faint satellite.

We present the ultraviolet luminosity function and an estimate of the cosmic star formation rate density at 8 < z < 13 derived from deep NIRCam observations taken in parallel with the MIRI Deep Survey of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), NIRCam covering the parallel field 2. Our deep (40 hr) NIRCam observations reach an F277W magnitude of 30.8 (5 σ ), more than 2 mag deeper than JWST public data sets already analyzed to find high-redshift galaxies. We select a sample of 44 z > 8 galaxy candidates based on their dropout nature in the F115W and/or F150W filters, a high probability for their photometric redshifts, estimated with three different codes, being at z > 8, good fits based on χ ^2 calculations, and predominant solutions compared to z < 8 alternatives. We find mild evolution in the luminosity function from z ∼ 13 to z ∼ 8, i.e., only a small increase in the average number density of ∼0.2 dex, while the faint-end slope and absolute magnitude of the knee remain approximately constant, with values α = − 2.2 ± 0.1, and M ^* = − 20.8 ± 0.2 mag. Comparing our results with the predictions of state-of-the-art galaxy evolution models, we find two main results: (1) a slower increase with time in the cosmic star formation rate density compared to a steeper rise predicted by models; (2) nearly a factor of 10 higher star formation activity concentrated in scales around 2 kpc in galaxies with stellar masses ∼10 ^8 M _⊙ during the first 350 Myr of the universe, z ∼ 12, with models matching better the luminosity density observational estimations ∼150 Myr later, by z ∼ 9.

The new capabilities that JWST offers in the near- and mid-infrared (IR) are used to investigate in unprecedented detail the nature of optical/near-IR-faint, mid-IR-bright sources, with HST-dark galaxies among them. We gather JWST data from the CEERS survey in the Extended Groth Strip, jointly with HST data, and analyze spatially resolved optical-to-mid-IR spectral energy distributions to estimate photometric redshifts in two dimensions and stellar population properties on a pixel-by-pixel basis for red galaxies detected by NIRCam. We select 138 galaxies with F150W − F356W > 1.5 mag and F356W < 27.5 mag. The nature of these sources is threefold: (1) 71% are dusty star-forming galaxies (SFGs) at 2 < z < 6 with $9\lt \mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\lt 11$ and a variety of specific SFRs (100 Gyr ^−1 ); (2) 18% are quiescent/dormant (i.e., subject to reignition/rejuvenation) galaxies (QGs) at 3 < z < 5, with $\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\sim 10$ and poststarburst mass-weighted ages (0.5–1.0 Gyr); and (3) 11% are strong young starbursts with indications of high equivalent width emission lines (typically, [O iii ]+H β ) at 6 < z < 7 (XELG- z 6) and $\mathrm{log}{M}_{\star }/{M}_{\odot }\sim 9.5$ . The sample is dominated by disk-like galaxies with remarkable compactness for XELG- z 6 (effective radii smaller than 0.4 kpc). Large attenuations in SFGs, 2 < A ( V ) < 5 mag, are found within 1.5 times the effective radius, approximately 2 kpc, while QGs present A ( V ) ∼ 0.2 mag. Our SED-fitting technique reproduces the expected dust emission luminosities of IR-bright and submillimeter galaxies. This study implies high levels of star formation activity between z ∼ 20 and z ∼ 10, where virtually 100% of our galaxies had already formed 10 ^8 M _⊙ , 60% had assembled 10 ^9 M _⊙ , and 10% up to 10 ^10 M _⊙ (in situ or ex situ).

We present results from wide-field imaging of the resolved stellar populations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxies Cassiopeia III (And XXXII) and Perseus I (And XXXIII), two satellites in the outer stellar halo of the Andromeda galaxy (M31). Our WIYN pODI photometry traces the red giant star population in each galaxy to ∼2.5−3 half-light radii from the galaxy center. We use the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB) method to derive distances of ( m − M ) _0 = 24.62 ± 0.12 mag (839 ${}_{-45}^{+48}$ kpc, or ${156}_{-13}^{+16}$ kpc from M31) for Cas III and 24.47 ± 0.13 mag (738 ${}_{-45}^{+48}$ kpc, or 351 ${}_{-16}^{+17}$ kpc from M31) for Per I. These values are consistent within the errors with TRGB distances derived from a deeper Hubble Space Telescope study of the galaxies’ inner regions. For each galaxy, we derive structural parameters, total magnitude, and central surface brightness. We also place upper limits on the ratio of neutral hydrogen gas mass to optical luminosity, confirming the gas-poor nature of both galaxies. We combine our data set with corresponding data for the M31 satellite galaxy Lacerta I (And XXXI) from earlier work and search for substructure within the RGB star populations of Cas III, Per I, and Lac I. We find an overdense region on the west side of Lac I at a significance level of 2.5 σ –3 σ and a low-significance filament extending in the direction of M31. In Cas III, we identify two modestly significant overdensities near the center of the galaxy and another at two half-light radii. Per I shows no evidence for substructure in its RGB star population, which may reflect this galaxy’s isolated nature.

In the present-day Kuiper Belt, the number of compositional classes and the orbital distributions of these classes hold important cosmogonic implications for the solar system. The Colours of the Outer Solar System Origins Survey (Col-OSSOS) recently showed that the observed color distribution of small ( H ⪆ 6) trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs) can be accounted for by the existence of only two composition classes, named BrightIR and FaintIR, where the range of colors in each class can be modeled as mixtures of two material end-members. Here, we combine the high-precision photometric measurements of Col-OSSOS with those of previous surveys to investigate the orbital distribution of the two color classes and reinterpret the known color–inclination correlation of TNOs in the context of the BrightIR/FaintIR taxonomy. In addition to confirming the previously reported distinct orbital distributions of these classes, we identify a trend of increasing orbital inclinations toward the bluer end of the optical and near-infrared color distribution of BrightIR objects. Using the output of numerical simulations investigating the orbital evolution of TNOs during their scattering phase with Neptune, we show that this trend could reflect a composition gradient in the early protoplanetary disk, in the range of heliocentric distances over which TNOs from the BrightIR class accreted. However, tensions between this interpretation and the existence of blue contaminants among cold classical TNOs, and possible alternative origins for the detected correlation, currently bear uncertainty on our proposed interpretation.

We present the discovery of Boötes V, a new ultra-faint dwarf galaxy (UFD) candidate. This satellite is detected as a resolved overdensity of stars during an ongoing search for new Local Group dwarf galaxy candidates in the UNIONS photometric data set. It has a physical half-light radius of ${26.9}_{-5.4}^{+7.5}$ pc, a V -band magnitude of −4.5 ± 0.4 mag, and resides at a heliocentric distance of approximately 100 kpc. We use Gaia DR3 astrometry to identify member stars, characterize the systemic proper motion, and confirm the reality of this faint stellar system. The brightest star in this system was followed up using Gemini GMOS-N long-slit spectroscopy and is measured to have a metallicity of [Fe/H] = −2.85 ± 0.10 dex and a heliocentric radial velocity of v _r = 5.1 ± 13.4 km s ^−1 . Boötes V is larger (in terms of scale radius), more distant, and more metal-poor than the vast majority of globular clusters. It is likely that Boötes V is an UFD, though future spectroscopic studies will be necessary to definitively classify this object.

We present wide-field, high resolution maps of the color excess for 14 globular clusters toward the Southern Galactic bulge. The maps were derived using Gaia EDR3 astrometry and stellar photometry from the Blanco DECam Bulge Survey, which is a deep, wide-field ugriz Y photometric survey of the southern Galactic bulge. Comparisons with WISE 12 μ m images of thermal continuum emission demonstrate that the maps presented here trace interstellar extinction by dust down to 5″ scales. We use the reddening-corrected photometry of proper motion-selected cluster stars to build color–magnitude diagrams for the target globular clusters, which show residual broadening in excess of that expected from the photometric errors alone. This residual broadening is likely to be driven by star-to-star elemental abundance variations.

The Kuiper Belt objects (KBOs), the Centaurs, and the Jupiter-family comets (JFCs) form an evolutionary continuum of small outer solar system objects, and their study allows us to gain insight into the history and evolution of the solar system. Broadband photometry can be used to measure their phase curves, allowing a first-order probe into the surface properties of these objects, though limited telescope time makes measuring accurate phase curves difficult. We make use of serendipitous broadband photometry from the long-baseline, high-cadence Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System survey to measure the phase curves for a sample of 18 KBOs, Centaurs, and JFCs with unprecedentedly large data sets. We find phase curves with previously reported negative slopes become positive with increased data and are thus due to insufficient sampling of the phase-curve profile, and not a real physical effect. We search for correlations between phase-curve parameters, finding no strong correlations between any parameter pair, consistent with the findings of previous studies. We search for instances of cometary activity in our sample, finding a previously reported outburst by Echeclus and a new epoch of increased activity by Chiron. Applying the main belt asteroid HG _1 G _2 phase-curve model to three JFCs in our sample with large phase angle spans, we find their slope parameters imply surfaces more consistent with those of carbonaceous main belt asteroids than silicaceous ones.

We use the Illustris-1 simulation to explore the capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) data to analyze the stellar populations in high-redshift galaxies, taking advantage of the combined depth, spatial resolution, and wavelength coverage. For that purpose, we use simulated broadband ACS, WFC3, and NIRCam data and two-dimensional stellar population synthesis (2D-SPS) to derive the integrated star formation history (SFH) of massive ( M _* > 10 ^10 M _⊙ ) simulated galaxies at 1 < z < 4 that evolve into a local M _* > 10 ^11 M _⊙ galaxy. In particular, we explore the potential of HST and JWST data sets reaching a depth similar to those of the CANDELS and ongoing CEERS observations, respectively, and concentrate on determining the capabilities of this data set for characterizing the first episodes in the SFH of local M _* > 10 ^11 M _⊙ galaxies by studying their progenitors at z > 1. The 2D-SPS method presented in this paper has been calibrated to robustly recover the cosmic times when the first star formation episodes occurred in massive galaxies, i.e., the first stages in their integrated SFHs. In particular, we discuss the times when the first 1%–50% of their total stellar mass formed in the simulation. We demonstrate that we can recover these ages with typical median systematic offset of less than 5% and scatter around 20%–30%. According to our measurements on Illustris data, we are able to recover that local M _* > 10 ^11 M _⊙ galaxies would have started their formation by z = 16, forming the first 5% of their stellar mass present at z ∼ 1 by z = 4.5, 10% by z = 3.7, and 25% by z = 2.7.

Cometary activity is a manifestation of sublimation-driven processes at the surface of nuclei. However, cometary outbursts may arise from other processes that are not necessarily driven by volatiles. In order to fully understand nuclear surfaces and their evolution, we must identify the causes of cometary outbursts. In that context, we present a study of mini-outbursts of comet 46P/Wirtanen. Six events are found in our long-term lightcurve of the comet around its perihelion passage in 2018. The apparent strengths range from −0.2 to −1.6 mag in a 5″ radius aperture and correspond to dust masses between ∼10 ^4 and 10 ^6 kg, but with large uncertainties due to the unknown grain size distributions. However, the nominal mass estimates are on the same order of magnitude as the mini-outbursts at comet 9P/Tempel 1 and 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, events that were notably lacking at comet 103P/Hartley 2. We compare the frequency of outbursts at the four comets, and suggest that the surface of 46P has large-scale (∼10–100 m) roughness that is intermediate to that of 67P and 103P, if not similar to the latter. The strength of the outbursts appear to be correlated with time since the last event, but a physical interpretation with respect to solar insolation is lacking. We also examine Hubble Space Telescope images taken about two days following a near-perihelion outburst. No evidence for macroscopic ejecta was found in the image, with a limiting radius of about 2 m.
