It is debated whether primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) and progressive agrammatic aphasia (PAA) belong to the same clinical spectrum, traditionally termed non-fluent/agrammatic variant primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA), or exist as two completely distinct syndromic entities with specific pathologic/prognostic correlates. We analysed speech, language and disease severity features in a comprehensive cohort of patients with progressive motor speech impairment and/or agrammatism to ascertain evidence of naturally occurring, clinically meaningful non-overlapping syndromic entities (e.g. PPAOS and PAA) in our data. We also assessed if data-driven latent clinical dimensions with aetiologic/prognostic value could be identified. We included 98 participants, 43 of whom had an autopsy-confirmed neuropathological diagnosis. Speech pathologists assessed motor speech features indicative of dysarthria and apraxia of speech (AOS). Quantitative expressive/receptive agrammatism measures were obtained and compared with healthy controls. Baseline and longitudinal disease severity was evaluated using the Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes (CDR-SB). We investigated the data's clustering tendency and cluster stability to form robust symptom clusters and employed principal component analysis to extract data-driven latent clinical dimensions (LCD). The longitudinal CDR-SB change was estimated using linear mixed-effects models. Of the participants included in this study, 93 conformed to previously reported clinical profiles (75 with AOS and agrammatism, 12 PPAOS and six PAA). The remaining five participants were characterized by non-fluent speech, executive dysfunction and dysarthria without apraxia of speech or frank agrammatism. No baseline clinical features differentiated between frontotemporal lobar degeneration neuropathological subgroups. The Hopkins statistic demonstrated a low cluster tendency in the entire sample (0.45 with values near 0.5 indicating random data). Cluster stability analyses showed that only two robust subgroups (differing in agrammatism, executive dysfunction and overall disease severity) could be identified. Three data-driven components accounted for 71% of the variance [(i) severity-agrammatism; (ii) prominent AOS; and (iii) prominent dysarthria]. None of these data-driven LCDs allowed an accurate prediction of neuropathology. The severity-agrammatism component was an independent predictor of a faster CDR-SB increase in all the participants. Higher dysarthria severity, reduced words per minute and expressive and receptive agrammatism severity at baseline independently predicted accelerated disease progression. Our findings indicate that PPAOS and PAA, rather than exist as completely distinct syndromic entities, constitute a clinical continuum. In our cohort, splitting the nfvPPA spectrum into separate clinical phenotypes did not improve clinical-pathological correlations, stressing the need for new biological markers and consensus regarding updated terminology and clinical classification.

Background: Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by difficulties with all aspects of information acquisition in the written word, including slow and inaccurate word recognition. The neural basis behind DD has not been fully elucidated. Method: The study included 22 typically developing (TD) children, 16 children with isolated spelling disorder (SpD), and 20 children with DD. The cortical thickness, folding index, and mean curvature of Broca's area, including the triangular part of the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFGtriang) and the opercular part of the left inferior frontal gyrus, were assessed to explore the differences of surface morphology among the TD, SpD, and DD groups. Furthermore, the structural covariance network (SCN) of the triangular part of the left inferior frontal gyrus was analyzed to explore the changes of structural connectivity in the SpD and DD groups. Results: The DD group showed higher curvature and cortical folding of the left IFGtriang than the TD group and SpD group. In addition, compared with the TD group and the SpD group, the structural connectivity between the left IFGtriang and the left middle-frontal gyrus and the right mid-orbital frontal gyrus was increased in the DD group, and the structural connectivity between the left IFGtriang and the right precuneus and anterior cingulate was decreased in the DD group. Conclusion: DD had atypical structural connectivity in brain regions related to visual attention, memory and which might impact the information input and integration needed for reading and spelling. ObjectiveBroca's aphasia is a syndrome of impaired fluency with retained comprehension. The authors used an unbiased algorithm to examine which neuroanatomical areas are most likely to result in Broca's aphasia following surgical lesions.MethodsPatients were prospectively evaluated with standardized language batteries before and after surgery. Broca's area was defined anatomically as the pars opercularis and triangularis of the inferior frontal gyrus. Broca's aphasia was defined by the Western Aphasia Battery language assessment. Resections were outlined from MRI scans to construct 3D volumes of interest. These were aligned using a nonlinear transformation to Montreal Neurological Institute brain space. A voxel-based lesion-symptom mapping (VLSM) algorithm was used to test for areas statistically associated with Broca's aphasia when incorporated into a resection, as well as areas associated with deficits in fluency independent of Western Aphasia Battery classification. Postoperative MRI scans were reviewed in blinded fashion to estimate the percentage resection of Broca's area compared to areas identified using the VLSM algorithm.ResultsA total of 289 patients had early language evaluations, of whom 19 had postoperative Broca's aphasia. VLSM analysis revealed an area that was highly correlated (p < 0.001) with Broca's aphasia, spanning ventral sensorimotor cortex and supramarginal gyri, as well as extending into subcortical white matter tracts. Reduced fluency scores were significantly associated with an overlapping region of interest. The fluency score was negatively correlated with fraction of resected precentral, postcentral, and supramarginal components of the VLSM area.ConclusionsBroca's aphasia does not typically arise from neurosurgical resections in Broca's area. When Broca's aphasia does occur after surgery, it is typically in the early postoperative period, improves by 1 month, and is associated with resections of ventral sensorimotor cortex and supramarginal gyri.

Information related to Personal identity, attitudes and feelings, and Participation in life situations were the most cited, followed by Language and related impairments and Communication and language environment. Conclusion: It was identified that health professionals, therapeutic interventions, spirituality, hope, context, interactions, and psychosocial factors influence the experience of Broca’s aphasia. It is essential to continue investigating how people report the experience of having lived through a period of Broca’s aphasia to improve the quality of care and people's quality of life.

This work examines, in addition to Paul Pierre Broca’s psycholinguistic contributions, his adherence and contribution to Basque linguistics. Three areas have been analyzed: neurolinguistics, anthropology and Basque linguistics. Thus, critical interpretations of neurological discoveries are exposed. We have examined the paper «Sur l’origine et la répartition de la langue basque. Basques français et basques espagnols» (Broca, 1875), in order to present the main hypotheses and reflections that appear in it, referring to the geographical drift of the Basque language and the sociolinguistic situation of the 19th century, among other areas.

La broca del café Hypothenemus hampei, es uno de los insectos plaga más importantes a nivel mundial que dañan al fruto del café. El objetivo fue evaluar vinagres y extractos de plantas mezclados con etanol para ser utilizados como atrayentes para la captura del insecto. Se utilizaron por primera vez las mezclas: etanol-albahaca, etanol-ruda, etanol-romero, etanol-vinagre blanco y etanol-vinagre de manzana, en una proporción 1:1 y como testigo metanol-etanol 3:1, utilizando trampas artesanales, en un diseño completamente al azar con cinco repeticiones por cada tratamiento. Con base en los análisis estadísticos, se observó que el etanol-vinagre de manzana y etanol-vinagre blanco, presentaron la mayor captura de especímenes 136,36 y 98,24 en promedio con respecto a las otras mezclas. Se concluye que los mejores atrayentes utilizados en esta investigación pueden servir como una estrategia sustentable para la captura de la broca del café.

Of all the nineteenth-century physicians whose names still resonate today, Armand Trousseau is perhaps the one most familiar, for his description of carpal spasm as a sign of hypocalcemia (Trousseau's sign) and his description of the hypercoagulable state associated with cancer (Trousseau's syndrome). In the last three years of his life, Trousseau turned his attention to aphasia, which he included in his 1864 and 1865 lectures given at Hôtel-Dieu Hospital in Paris and which he discussed in an address to the Imperial Academy of Medicine in 1865. Trousseau preceded Wernicke in describing aphasia as a symptom complex, in which he included Broca's aphemia, receptive aphasia, the inability to read with and without the inability to write (alexia with and without agraphia), the inability to name common objects (amnesic aphasia or anomia) and to recognize numbers (acalculia), and the inability to draw. Trousseau concluded that such a varied symptomatology could not arise from a single area, and he proposed that lesions of the posterior inferior frontal convolution identified by Broca, of the insula and corpus striatum and of the temporal and parietal lobes, could give rise to aphasia. The role of the posterior temporal lobe in receptive aphasia was confirmed by Wernicke in 1874, and the role of the inferior parietal lobule in agraphia and alexia was confirmed by Dejerine in 1891. Trousseau thought that aphasia resulted from the loss of the memory for words and for the synergistic actions of the movements of articulations learned in early childhood. Trousseau added inattention, lack of comprehension, and cognitive decline to amnesia as contributing factors to the verbal and nonverbal expression of thought. Trousseau constructed a comprehensive theory of aphasia that unified its semiology, localization, and pathophysiology. This construct had the virtue of being predictive and falsifiable by the clinico-pathological method. Este trabajo pretende analizar los parámetros temporales de las consonantes oclusivas sordas [p, t, k] en el habla espontánea de un hablante con afasia de Broca y apraxia del habla en tres momentos diferentes de su enfermedad, a fin de determinar el nivel de deterioro respecto a su producción sin patología, así como su evolución tras veintidós meses de terapia logopédica. Las principales variables estudiadas han sido la duración consonántica, de la fase de silencio y del VOT. Los resultados estadísticos indican que los parámetros temporales presentan valores mayores a los observados en hablantes sin patología y que estos van en descenso a lo largo de la rehabilitación, especialmente para la realización bilabial. Las variaciones en la duración dependen, fundamentalmente, del punto de articulación y de los procesos de mantenimiento o debilitamiento de la sonoridad. Además, se ha advertido que las principales mejoras se han producido durante el periodo de recuperación espontánea y que las características acústicas de la realización bilabial se diferencian de las de las consonantes dental y velar, siendo la primera la que presenta los valores de duración más altos, así como los patrones de mejora más significativos.

Na safra de 2004/05 foram observados danos de Agathomerus sellatus (Germar) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) na cultura do tomateiro na Região do Planalto Norte Catarinense. Neste trabalho é apresentada a descrição e os danos do inseto, com algumas indicações para o seu manejo. As larvas de A. sellatus broqueiam as hastes do tomateiro e de outras solanáceas, enquanto os adultos alimentam-se das partes verdes das plantas. A postura é endofítica e resulta em um dano característico, formado por pequenos orifícios em espiral ao redor da haste. No local da postura a haste pode quebrar com o vento, na manipulação ou devido ao peso da planta. Rotação de culturas, controle dos insetos adultos e a eliminação das plantas atacadas podem contribuir para reduzir o nível populacional da praga.

Recent technological advances show the feasibility of offline decoding speech from neuronal signals, paving the way to the development of chronically implanted speech brain computer interfaces (sBCI). Two key steps that still need to be addressed for the online deployment of sBCI are, on the one hand, the definition of relevant design parameters of the recording arrays, on the other hand, the identification of robust physiological markers of the patient's intention to speak, which can be used to online trigger the decoding process. To address these issues, we acutely recorded speech-related signals from the frontal cortex of two human patients undergoing awake neurosurgery for brain tumors using three different micro-electrocorticographic (μ ECoG) devices. First, we observed that, at the smallest investigated pitch (600 μ m), neighboring channels are highly correlated, suggesting that more closely spaced electrodes would provide some redundant information. Second, we trained a classifier to recognize speech-related motor preparation from high-gamma oscillations (70–150 Hz), demonstrating that these neuronal signals can be used to reliably predict speech onset. Notably, our model generalized both across subjects and recording devices showing the robustness of its performance. These findings provide crucial information for the design of future online sBCI. Jules Baillarger was one of the foremost figures of nineteenth-century neurobiology. He is remembered today for his discovery that the human cerebral cortex is composed of six intercalated layers. Even today, two horizontal fiber bundles within cortical layers IV and V are referred to as the outer and inner bands of Baillarger. It is a measure of the importance of Baillarger's discovery that his findings were elaborated upon with advances in microscopy and the development of methods for staining neurons and myelin by, notably, Theodor Meynert and Santiago Ramon y Cajal. Furthermore, Baillarger's observation that there are variations in the thickness of one or another of the six cortical layers in different cortical regions, and the discovery of giant pyramidal motor neurons in layer V of the precentral gyrus, ultimately led to the cytoarchitectonic and myeloarchitectonic maps of Oscar Vogt and Cécile Vogt-Mugnier, and of their student Korbinian Brodmann (1908). Less well known are Baillarger's contributions to the semiology of aphasia and the pivotal role he played in the recognition of the localization and lateralization of speech to the left hemisphere. Paul Broca's localization of articulate language to the posterior aspect of the frontal lobes and Marc Dax's discovery that speech is a function of the left hemisphere were vigorously challenged within French academic medicine until 1865, when Baillarger gave two addresses to the Royal Academy of Medicine. In the first address, he described a form of aphasia he called the perversion of language, which we now call fluent aphasia, and reported that aphasic patients can express words or parts of sentences when they are angry or excited, a phenomenon now known as the Baillarger-Jackson principle. In his second address, Baillarger supported the lateralization of speech to the left hemisphere of the brain and referred to this association as Dax's "singular law," and supported the localization of speech to the posterior aspect of the left inferior frontal gyrus. Baillarger's description of the perversion of language and of the influence of emotions on speech presaged the discipline of aphasiology, and his support for the lateralization of speech to the left hemisphere marks the first instance of the unequivocal recognition of asymmetrical hemispheric functions by academic medicine. This article reviews these aspects of Baillargher's career. Critical sections of his papers on cortical structure, aphasia, and functional hemispheric asymmetry are translated by the author. ObjectiveTo identify early cognitive and neuroimaging features of sporadic nonfluent/agrammatic variant of primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA) caused by frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) subtypes.MethodsWe prospectively collected clinical, neuroimaging, and neuropathologic data in 11 patients with sporadic nfvPPA with FTLD-tau (nfvPPA-tau, n = 9) or FTLD-transactive response DNA binding protein pathology of 43 kD type A (nfvPPA-TDP, n = 2). We analyzed patterns of cognitive and gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) atrophy at presentation in the whole group and in each pathologic subtype separately. We also considered longitudinal clinical data.ResultsAt first evaluation, regardless of pathologic FTLD subtype, apraxia of speech (AOS) was the most common cognitive feature and atrophy involved the left posterior frontal lobe. Each pathologic subtype showed few distinctive features. At presentation, patients with nfvPPA-tau presented with mild to moderate AOS, mixed dysarthria with prominent hypokinetic features, clear agrammatism, and atrophy in the GM of the left posterior frontal regions and in left frontal WM. While speech and language deficits were prominent early, within 3 years of symptom onset, all patients with nfvPPA-tau developed significant extrapyramidal motor signs. At presentation, patients with nfvPPA-TDP had severe AOS, dysarthria with spastic features, mild agrammatism, and atrophy in left posterior frontal GM only. Selective mutism occurred early, when general neurologic examination only showed mild decrease in finger dexterity in the right hand.ConclusionsClinical features in sporadic nfvPPA caused by FTLD subtypes relate to neurodegeneration of GM and WM in frontal motor speech and language networks. We propose that early WM atrophy in nfvPPA is suggestive of FTLD-tau pathology while early selective GM loss might be indicative of FTLD-TDP.

ABSTRACT. The age-old debates about the localization of the mind (higher functions) took a new course when Willis located a higher nervous function (memory) in the brain parenchyma, and supposedly, in the cerebral cortex. About two centuries later, Broca, founded on solid scientific reasoning, localized a circumscribed area of the 3rd frontal circumvolution of the left hemisphere as the seat of articulate language, a higher function (speech - language domain). He (and Dax) also defined the functional asymmetry (specialization) of the hemispheres, with left dominance (for language). The period between the findings of these individuals was not quiescent, as numerous authors contributed with their theoretical and clinicopathological research toward creating a conducive scientific atmosphere for this accomplishment, and should be regarded as important. Further studies, in the decades that followed, revealed the localization of additional aspects of language and of other higher functions (cognitive domains).

The processing of quantifier words such as “many” or “few” is a complex operation supported by a plastic fronto-parietal network predominantly in the left hemisphere. The internal reference criterion defining a quantifier (e.g., ≥50% for “many”) can be modified in a learning paradigm. Most interestingly, changing the criterion for one quantifier also leads to a change in the criterion for the untrained quantifier, i.e., a semantic restructuring effect, which is supported by Broca’s region in the left inferior frontal cortex. Here, we applied this paradigm to patients with the behavioral variant of fronto-temporal dementia (bvFTD) because they suffer from loss of cognitive flexibility, reduced ability to process quantities and their values, impaired reinforcement learning, and language comprehension deficits. The question was whether the patients would be able to perform the task, show direct learning of the new quantifier meanings, and exhibit cognitive flexibility in terms of semantic restructuring. Eleven bvFTD patients took part in two behavioral experiments. In Experiment 1, in a first baseline block, each individual’s criterion for “many” and “few” was assessed. In block 2, subjects received feedback about their decisions. Contrary to their initial notion, a proportion of 40% yellow circles was reinforced as “many.” In block 3, the effect of this training on their judgments of “many” and “few” was re-assessed. The group of bvFTD patients showed a learning effect for the new criterion trained for the quantifier “many,” but failed to generalize this criterion shift to the other quantifier “few.” Experiment 2 was similar to Experiment 1, but the patients were trained in Block 2 to judge 60% of circles as “few,” with no training for “many.” Again, there was an average learning effect for the trained quantifier “few” over the entire group, but no generalization to “many.” Since the patients were still able to perform the task and showed learning of “many” to direct feedback, the data suggest that the generalization process, rather than initial learning, is more vulnerable to fronto-temporal degeneration.

The Imperial Academy of Medicine of Paris met in the spring of 1865 to discuss the localization of speech. One of the participants was Maximien Parchappe (1800–1866), an alienist whose research interests lay in the cerebral cortex. This article addresses Maximien Parchappe's concept that the cognitive elements of language—such as the translation of thoughts into words, the will to express them, and the means to do so—reside within the cortical gray matter, and that they are integrated through white-matter fibers. In so doing, Parchappe anticipated Carl Wernicke's linking of the posterior aspects of the dominant frontal and temporal lobes in verbal expression, and Jules Dejerine's linking of the angular gyrus and Wernicke's area in the understanding of written language. Functional imaging has revived interest in language as a network of neuronal aggregates and has given new relevance to Parchappe's concept of the functional organization of language. Purpose: One of the oldest procedures performed by man is trepanning of the bone and yet it was only in the last 40 years that bone marrow aspiration has been used to treat nonunion disorders.Material and Methods: These advances were possible due to improvements in instruments and in techniques to make holes in the bone, an history that began with skull trephinations around 8000-10,000 years ago, and continued with sternum bone marrow injection for trauma resuscitation in the beginning of the twentieth century; this procedure had improved at the beginning of the twenty-first century to allow pelvis bone marrow aspiration for the treatment of nonunion.Results: Trephined skulls from antiquity have been found in many parts of world, showing that trephining was ancient and widespread. Beginning with Neolithic period and the pre-Columbian Andean civilizations, the authors have traced the development of this surgical skill by describing the various surgical tools used to perform holes in the skull. These tools (trephines or trepan) were proposed at the end of the nineteenth century to study the bone marrow. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the sternum became the center of interest for the "in vivo" study of the bone marrow and the fluid injection in the sternum's bone marrow was described for resuscitation from shock during the World War II. With the introduction of plastic catheters and improved cannulation techniques, the need for intraosseous infusion as an alternative route for intravenous access diminished and sometimes abandoned. However, during the mid-1980s, James Orlowski allowed renaissance of the use of intraosseous infusion for paediatric resuscitation. Since then, this technique has become widespread and is now recognized as an alternative to intravenous access in adult emergencies; particularly, the intraosseous access has received class IIA recommendation from the Advanced Trauma Life Support program supported by the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma and bone marrow infusion is now recommended for "Damage Control" resuscitation. Although the pelvis bone contains half of the body's marrow volume, it was only in 1950 that the pelvis was proposed as a source for bone marrow aspiration and bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells to improve healing of fractures.Conclusion: It will be many years before doing holes in the bone as orthopaedic trauma procedure will be relegated to the annals of history. Neurosurgical decisions regarding interventions close to brain areas with language-related functions remain highly challenging because of the risk of postoperative dysfunction. To minimize these risks, improvements in the preoperative mapping of language-related regions are required, especially as space-occupying lesions often lead to altered cortical topography and language area reorganization. The degree of deviation and language area reorganization were investigated in 26 functional magnetic resonance imaging- and magnetoencephalography-dissociable cortical sub-areas displaying language-related activations in each of 18 patients with brain lesions and 3 healthy volunteers (during visual language tasks). Both modalities showed good congruency of the language areas. The mean spatial distance of the centroids and maxima was 9.06 mm and 10.58 mm, respectively, allowing us to define more specific anatomical positions. Postoperatively, language abilities increased in 11% (2 of 18) of the patients, remained unchanged in 83% (15 of 18) of the patients, and decreased in 6% (1 of 18) of the patients, respectively. Signs of language function reorganization detected on both functional magnetic resonance imaging and magnetoencephalography were present in 29% (5 of 17) of the patients. Attenuation of neurovascular coupling was found postoperatively in 17% (3 of 18) of the patients. Monohemispheric language processing cannot be assumed always in patients with brain lesions. The more detailed subdivision of language-relevant brain areas shown in this study can help to achieve more radical tumor resection without postoperative language deficits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Germline and somatic BRCA1 and BRCA2 (BRCA) mutations predict treatment response in patients with epithelial ovarian, peritoneal or fallopian tube cancer (OC), yet only germline testing is routinely pursued or reimbursed at diagnosis. We report our experience with clinical testing of paired tumor and germline DNA for OC mutations. Simultaneous sequencing using the BROCA assay of DNA from paired blood and neoplastic tissue became clinically available at our institution in 2017. We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of OC cases tested from 7/2017 to 7/2018. We calculated the rates of known pathogenic germline mutations and actionable somatic mutations, defined as those for which targeted therapies exist. We identified 43 women (36 new diagnoses, seven recurrences) who underwent testing. Average age at diagnosis was 60. OC samples came from surgical specimens in 31 cases (72.1%), from biopsy in 11 cases (25.6%), and from cytology in one case (2.3%). We identified pathogenic germline mutations in six cases (14%), actionable somatic mutations in 15 cases (35%), and both a somatic and germline mutation in one case (2%). BRCA mutations accounted for 59% of all mutations. Of 40 cases with sufficient follow-up, providers documented reviewing results of genetic testing in 34 (85%), which influenced clinical decisions in 12 (30%). Simultaneous germline and tumor sequencing is an efficient way to provide enhanced information to guide the care of OC patients. This approach can identify somatic BRCA mutations at diagnosis, allowing physicians to provide PARP inhibitor maintenance and improve outcomes for those patients. • Potentially actionable mutations were identified in half of ovarian cancer cases: 14% germline, 35% somatic, and 2% both. • Pathogenic BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations accounted for 59% of all actionable mutations identified. • Sequencing results directly influenced clinical care in one fourth of new diagnoses and in one half of recurrences. This article aims to know about hearing development experienced by otologically healthy children during their early childhood, in order to give an objective documentation about the matter to preschool education teachers, so that they can improve and enhance their didactic work in the classroom. The research uses classic bibliography in health sciences and psychology, international standards on hearing thresholds, and validated researches addressing the development of tonal discrimination, localization of sounds in space, and the impact of hearing on integral child development. It is concluded that the hearing development in early childhood is not limited to physiological aspect, but it also involves other factors such as sensory, sensorimotor, perceptual and cognitive ones.

While the involvement of the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in language production is undisputed, the role of specific subregions at different representational levels remains unclear. Some studies suggest a division of anterior and posterior regions for semantic and phonological processing, respectively. Crucially, evidence thus far only comes from correlative neuroimaging studies, but the functional relevance of the involvement of these subregions during a given task remains elusive. We applied repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over anterior and posterior IFG (aIFG/pIFG), and vertex as a control site, while participants performed a category member and a rhyme generation task. We found a functional‐anatomical double dissociation between tasks and subregions. Naming latencies were significantly delayed in the semantic task when rTMS was applied to aIFG (relative to pIFG and vertex). In contrast, we observed a facilitation of naming latencies in the phonological task when rTMS was applied to pIFG (relative to aIFG and vertex). The results provide first causal evidence for the notion that anterior portions of the IFG are selectively recruited for semantic processing while posterior regions are functionally specific for phonological processing during word production. Classification is the process of grouping similar entities under one category for the ease of their comprehension and better handling. Medical classification dates back to the days of William Farr who is credited with the development of a nosology, which later served as the forerunner for the modern-day disease classification by ICD. The WHO system of classification is a time-honoured system that has prevailed from decades together and is under constant evolution. The classification of odontogenic tumours was first formulated by Pierre Paul Broca and has undergone several transformations over years. Though the earlier classifications and their modifications by several authors and even by the WHO appeared to be fitting for their time, the latest edition of WHO classification of odontogenic and maxillofacial bone tumours neither seems to be complete nor perfect, even at the present context. It is unfortunate that even with the advancement of molecular biology, the present WHO classification on Odontogenic and Maxillofacial bone tumours, fails to serve as a 'reference standard' in the true sense of the term. Abstract The role of left and right hemisphere brain regions in language recovery after stroke-induced aphasia remains controversial. Here, we summarize how neuroimaging studies increase the current understanding of functional interactions, reorganization and plasticity in the language network. We first discuss the temporal dynamics across the time course of language recovery, with a main focus on longitudinal studies from the acute to the chronic phase after stroke. These studies show that the functional contribution of perilesional and spared left hemisphere as well as contralesional right hemisphere regions to language recovery changes over time. The second section introduces critical variables and recent advances on early prediction of subsequent outcome. In the third section, we outline how multi-method approaches that combine neuroimaging techniques with non-invasive brain stimulation elucidate mechanisms of plasticity and reorganization in the language network. These approaches provide novel insights into general mechanisms of plasticity in the language network and might ultimately support recovery processes during speech and language therapy. Finally, the neurobiological correlates of therapy-induced plasticity are discussed. We argue that future studies should integrate individualized approaches that might vary the combination of language therapy with specific non-invasive brain stimulation protocols across the time course of recovery. The way forward will include the combination of such approaches with large data sets obtained from multicentre studies. Hypsipyla grandella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is found throughout Central and South America, except in Chile. Damage caused by this pest in native trees of the subfamily Swietenoideae (Meliaceae) is so intense and severe that it makes industrial forestry with those species unfeasible. It also may damage fruits and seeds of those trees. Damage to reproductive structures may compromise natural regeneration and impair seedling production. Management tactics for this pest include the use of resistant exotic Meliaceae, such as the Australian red cedar (Toona ciliata M. Roem.) and the African mahogany (Khaya ivorensis). The objective of this work was to report, for the first time, damage to K. ivorensis fruits and seeds by H. grandella in Brazil. The study was carried out in a plantation for sawwood production, with about 73,000 trees of K. ivorensis in 175 ha in Corinto, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Ripe and almost ripe bored fruits were collected from the soil beneath 8-yr-old trees in May 2018. The total number of fruits and seeds damaged, the numbers of larvae, pupae, and adults of H. grandella per fruit, the presence of other species, and behavior of this pest were observed. Ten fruits bored by H. grandella were collected. The fruits were damaged internally by larvae of this pest, and half of them had exit holes. Each fruit had, on average, 33.6 seeds, with 99.4% of the seeds damaged, plus 4.2 H. grandella at different development stages. Some fruits did not have the borer, but they were damaged and had the characteristic exit holes of this species. The average number of larvae per fruit was 3.4, with up to 13 larvae in a single fruit. The damage in African mahogany shoots reported in 2016, and the current damage on fruits and seeds show that resistance of K. ivorensis to H. grandella has been broken, probably due to selective pressure over the large area planted with this tree in Brazil. Purpose: The present study aimed to explore the short-term effect of anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on tongue twister production. Method: Thirty healthy native Cantonese adult speakers were randomly assigned to the anodal tDCS group or the sham tDCS group. Anodal tDCS of 2 mA was applied over the Broca's area of the brain. The stimulation lasted for 20 min for the anodal tDCS group and 30 s for the sham tDCS group. The participants were instructed to produce a list of tongue twisters before, immediately after and 4 h after tDCS. Result: Speech rate and response accuracy measured immediately after stimulation were significantly faster and higher, respectively, than before stimulation. Although there was no change in speech rate measured at 4 h after stimulation, response accuracy at that time point was significantly lower than that measured immediately after stimulation. However, there were no significant differences between the anodal tDCS and sham tDCS groups in either speech rate or response accuracy. Conclusion: The findings revealed that a single session of anodal tDCS over the Broca's area did not significantly improve speech production during tongue twister production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Developmental language disorder (DLD) and speech sound disorder (SSD) are common, and although scientific evidence for structural and functional alterations in DLD/SSD is accumulating, current neuroimaging studies provide an incongruent picture. Here, we hypothesized that children affected by DLD and SSD present with gray matter (or gray matter asymmetry) aberrations in brain areas associated with language processing compared to typically developing (TD) children. To assess this hypothesis, we enhanced MRI‐based information with microscopically defined cytoarchitectonic probabilities of Broca's area (BA 45, BA 44) as well as an auditory area (TE 3.0). We detected a larger rightward gray matter asymmetry in BA 45 in children with DLD (n = 13) and with SSD (n = 18) compared to TD children (n = 18), albeit only on a trend level. Interestingly though, we observed significantly larger gray matter volumes in right BA 45 in DLD compared to SSD children (and also compared to TD children). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study is intended to investigate inflection deficits in two Kurdish-speaking Broca’s aphasia patients. Three grammatical categories including grammatical agreement, tense, and aspect together with their subcategories will be gauged to find the patterns in the speech of the patients. Natural conversations collected through voice-recordings and sentence completion tasks are employed to collect data. Friedmann & Grodzinsky (1997) is adopted as theoretical framework. The present study can be classified as a cross-sectional case study in which the data are collected from two Kurdish-speaking Broca’s aphasia patients. The results indicated that there was no task effect observed in this study; the two patients in the two tasks showed the least deficits in grammatical agreement and the most deficits in grammatical aspect. This finding is in line with Freidmann and Grodzinsky’s structural and hierarchical account of functional categories entitled Tree Pruning Hypothesis (TPH), although some minor findings of this study such as object agreement can be challenging for this account.

Introduction Broca's aphasia, non-fluent aphasia, encompasses articulation disorders, paraphasia, agrammatism, anomie, and discrete language comprehension disorders.1 It is a frustrating condition with extensive psychological, familial, and social impact.2 The reports of people who have already recovered or can express themselves are essential to understanding and increasing knowledge about the experience of living with Broca's aphasia,3 what promotes a better adjustment and optimization of the care.. Living with Aphasia: a framework for Outcome Measurement (A-FROM)4 is a framework that allows organize thinking about the impact of living with aphasia and includes four key domains: Communication and language environment; Language and related impairments; Personal identity, attitudes and feelings, and Participation in life situations.4 Nursing intervention is central to optimizing recovery and positively influencing the experience of successfully living with this clinical condition.5 Objectives To map and identify the scientific evidence about the experience of people who lived through a period of Broca's aphasia, according to their perspective. Method A Scoping Review was performed following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The review was based on the research question "How does the person report the experience of having lived through a period of Broca's aphasia?", formulated according to the PCC strategy: P=Population (adults who experienced Broca's aphasia); C=Concept (report of Broca's aphasia experience); C=Context (ambulatory and hospital). The search was carried out in the electronic databases MEDLINE®, CINAHL®, Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection, and Scopus in April 2020. The selection of articles was performed based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Primary studies, theoretical articles, literature reviews, and reports about Broca's aphasia experiences in English, Spanish and Portuguese, were included, with no time limit. The review followed the PRISMA-ScR EQUATOR checklist. Results and Discussion 15 articles published between 1961 and 2020 were included. Data obtained on Broca's aphasia experience were grouped according to the key domains of the A-FROM tool4. Information related to Personal identity, attitudes and feelings, and Participation in life situations were the most cited in the literature, followed by Language and related impairments and Communication and language environment. Conclusions and implications for knowledge development This review highlighted the influence that health professionals, therapeutic interventions, spirituality, hope, context, interactions, and psychosocial factors have on experiencing this clinical condition. It is essential to continue investigating how people report the experience of having lived through a period of Broca's aphasia to improve the quality of care provided to people with this clinical condition and consequently optimize their well-being and quality of life. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia do evento piramidado (MON 89034), que expressa as proteínas Cry1A.105 e Cry2Ab2, no controle dos principais lepidópteros-praga da cultura do milho no Brasil, Spodoptera frugiperda, Helicoverpa spp. e Diatraea saccharalis. Os ensaios foram conduzidos em quatro regiões do país, com o híbrido DKB 390, submetido a seis tratamentos: híbrido com o evento piramidado, híbrido com o evento que expressa apenas a proteína Cry1A(b) (MON 810) e híbrido convencional (não Bt), todos com e sem manejo integrado de S. frugiperda. Para o evento piramidado, não foi necessário o controle químico em nenhum dos locais avaliados. Diferenças significativas foram observadas entre os tratamentos quanto aos danos e à presença de lagartas. Em geral, essas variáveis foram mais baixas no híbrido com o evento piramidado e mais altas no híbrido convencional, sem controle químico. Sob alta infestação, o controle químico reduziu os danos causados por S. frugiperda e D. saccharalis, tanto no evento que expressa apenas uma proteína, como no híbrido convencional. Com base nos danos causados pelos insetos, o evento piramidado Cry1A.105 e Cry2Ab2 é eficiente no controle dos principais lepidópteros-pragas do milho no Brasil.

Introduction: Previous studies have shown that the arcuate fasciculus has a leftward asymmetry in right-handers that could be correlated with the language lateralisation defined by functional magnetic resonance imaging. Nonetheless, information about the asymmetry of the other fibres that constitute the dorsal language pathway is scarce. Objectives: This study investigated the asymmetry of the white-matter tracts involved in the dorsal language pathway through the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) technique, in relation to language hemispheric dominance determined by task-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods: We selected 11 patients (10 right-handed) who had been studied with task-dependent fMRI for language areas and DTI and who had no language impairment or structural abnormalities that could compromise magnetic resonance tractography of the fibres involved in the dorsal language pathway. Laterality indices (LI) for fMRI and for the volumes of each tract were calculated. Results: In fMRI, all the right-handers had left hemispheric lateralisation, and the ambidextrous subject presented right hemispheric dominance. The arcuate fasciculus LI was strongly correlated with fMRI LI (r = 0.739, p = 0.009), presenting the same lateralisation of fMRI in seven subjects (including the right hemispheric dominant). It was not asymmetric in three cases and had opposite lateralisation in one case. The other tracts presented predominance for rightward lateralisation, especially superior longitudinal fasciculus (SLF) II/III (nine subjects), but their LI did not correlate (directly or inversely) with fMRI LI. Conclusion: The fibres that constitute the dorsal language pathway have an asymmetric distribution in the cerebral hemispheres. Objective To study resting cerebral blood flow in children and adults with developmental stuttering. Methods We acquired pulsed arterial spin labeling magnetic resonance imaging data in 26 participants with stuttering and 36 healthy, fluent controls. While covarying for age, sex, and IQ, we compared perfusion values voxel-wise across diagnostic groups and assessed correlations of perfusion with stuttering severity within the stuttering group and with measures of motor speed in both groups. Results We detected lower regional Cerebral Blood Flow (rCBF) at rest in the stuttering group compared with healthy controls in Broca's area bilaterally and the superior frontal gyrus. rCBF values in Broca's area bilaterally correlated inversely with the severity of stuttering and extended posteriorly into other portions of the language loop. We also found increased rCBF in cerebellar nuclei and parietal cortex in the stuttering group compared with healthy controls. Findings were unchanged in child-only analyses and when excluding participants with comorbid illnesses or those taking medication. Conclusions rCBF is reduced in Broca's region in persons who stutter. More severe stuttering is associated with even greater reductions in rCBF to Broca's region, additive to the underlying putative trait reduction in rCBF relative to control values. Moreover, a greater abnormality in rCBF in the posterior language loop is associated with more severe symptoms, suggesting that a common pathophysiology throughout the language loop likely contributes to stuttering severity. People with post-stroke motor aphasia know what they would like to say but cannot express it through motor pathways due to disruption of cortical circuits. We present a theoretical background for our hypothesized connection between attention and aphasia rehabilitation and suggest why in this context, Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) use might be beneficial for patients diagnosed with aphasia. Not only could BCI technology provide a communication tool, it might support neuronal plasticity by activating language circuits and thereby boost aphasia recovery. However, stroke may lead to heterogeneous symptoms that might hinder BCI use, which is why the feasibility of this approach needs to be investigated first. In this pilot study, we included five participants diagnosed with post-stroke aphasia. Four participants were initially unable to use the visual P300 speller paradigm. By adjusting the paradigm to their needs, participants could successfully learn to use the speller for communication with accuracies up to 100%. Se prevé que el cambio del clima modifique el actual patrón espacial del cultivo del café en las laderas montañosas de Colombia. No obstante, las aproximaciones utilizadas para llegar a estos resultados se basan en el uso de modelos climáticos (globales y regionales) así como modelos de distribución de especies que, en gran medida, se soportan en el concepto de nicho. Con el fin de evaluar la certidumbre de los resultados obtenidos con dichos modelos, se plantea una metodología en la que se utilizan datos de estaciones meteorológicas y un índice de tipo agroclimático (tiempo térmico) cuya unidad son los grados día. Se determinó la mejor aproximación para el cálculo del tiempo térmico y se generaron los acumulados mensuales multianuales de grados día cafeto y grados día broca (utilizando el método del triángulo sencillo) usando los datos diarios de temperaturas extremas de estaciones meteorológicas con información histórica superior a 20 años. Se empleó el análisis de tendencias no paramétrico (prueba de Mann-Kendall) y el análisis de correlación para determinar efectos de la variabilidad climática, asociada a la ocurrencia de los fenómenos de El Niño y La Niña, sobre el tiempo térmico de las dos especies mencionadas. Se encontraron tendencias positivas significativas de los grados día broca y los grados día cafeto en las alturas sobre el nivel del mar óptimas, reportadas por diferentes autores para estas especies; es decir, los óptimos actuales se hacen cada vez más aptos para las dos especies analizadas.

ResumoNos insetos, o corpo gorduroso pode ser considerado um centro de metabolismo intermediário e também o local de síntese de alguns componentes da hemolinfa. Com objetivo de obter maiores informações sobre essa estrutura, foi realizado um estudo para a sua caracterização morfológica em adultos de Hedypathes betulinus Klug. Os resultados mostram que a estrutura ocorre em duas porções, a primeira, aderida ao trato digestivo e a segunda, associada ao tegumento, denominando-se, corpo gorduroso perivisceral e parietal, respectivamente. Histologicamente o corpo gorduroso apresenta dois tipos celulares, os trofócitos e os enócitos. Os trofócitos apresentam na área citoplasmática, vacúolos, núcleos esféricos, cromatina granular com variações na condensação, e em alguns casos, foram observados núcleos deslocados para a periferia celular. A presença de nucléolos múltiplos em algumas células sugere alta atividade nuclear. Os enócitos foram observados associados aos trofócitos, com núcleos centrais de formato esférico e cromatina de aspecto granular dispersa; os nucléolos apresentaram-se proeminentes em número variável e diferem dos trofócitos pela ausência de vacúolos, citoplasma granular, formato e tamanho das células.AbstractIn insects, the fat body may be considered a center of intermediary metabolism and also the site of synthesis of some components of the hemolymph. Aiming to obtain more knowledge about this structure, a study for characterization of morphological Hedypathes betulinus Klug was carried out. The results show that it takes place in two parts: the first one is adhered to the digestive tract, and the second one, associated with the coat, called the fat body and parietal perivisceral, respectively. Histologically the fat body is composed of two cell types, the trophocytes and the oenocites. The trophocytes present, in its cytoplasmic, vacuoles, spherical nuclei, granular chromatin with variations in condensation, and in some cases, it was observed nuclei displaced to periphery cells. The presence of multiple nucleoli in some cells suggests high nuclear activity. The oenocites were observed associated with trophocytes with central nuclei of spherical shape and granular appearance, dispersed chromatin, the nucleoli were prominent in variable number and differ from trophocytes by the absence of vacuoles, cytoplasm granular, shape and size of cells.

We describe three cases of aphasia in patients who were internationally famous historical personalities, such as the case of Mr. Leborgne ("Tan") published by Paul Broca in 1861, which became a reference for the study of aphasias. The other cases described here are those of the Russian revolutionary and politician Vladimir Ilyitch Ulianov (Lenin) ("Vot-vot") and the French poet Charles Baudelaire ("Cré nom!"). Besides their historical relevance and the clinical picture of aphasia, these three cases share as a common feature the occurrence of speech automatisms or stereotypes.

Objective: It has been many years that brain lesion analysis of different aphasia Syndromes has led the foundation to investigate the language representation and organization in the brain. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between brain lesion location and Broca's aphasia and Wernecke's aphasia in Persian speakers with stroke. Materials & Methods: In a single system design study, from 120 patients with stroke attending Emam Khomeyni and Loghman hospitals, Rofeyde, Karaj neurology, and Tabassom speech clinics and according to the Farsi Aphasia Test (FAT), syntactic comprehension subscale of Bilingual Aphasia Test (BAT), Farsi Aphasia Naming Test, and Apraxia Assessment inventory, only 9 patients with Broca’s aphasia and 2 with Wernicke’s aphasia were qualified to participate in this study. Patients’ brain lesion sites were determined by MRI. Patients with Broca’s aphasia were 5 male and 4 female Wernecke’s aphasia patients were 2 male. Results: External capsule-insula, rolandic operculum, inferior frontal gyrus, (precentral gyrus and postcentarl gyrus), and the anterior part of temporal gyrus were damaged in Broca’s aphasia patients (64±12.51 years old) and the lesions of external capsule-insula, posterior part of temporal gyrus, anterior part of temporal gyrus, inferior parietal lobule were observed in Wernicke’s aphasia patients (66±8.48 years old). Conclusion: In no patient with Broca’s aphasia or Wernicke’s aphasia brain lesion confined only to Broca’s area or Wernicke’s area respectively. However, due to the limited number of participants in the present study, the extrapolation of the findings to other subjects with Broca’s or Wernicke’s aphasia would certainly be difficult.

OBJETIVOS: analizar los sonidos [+ líquidos] en dos tipos de estructura silábica en la producción de habla de 35 hablantes de español con afasia de Broca con el fin de determinar si dichas estructuras se conservan o se pierden. MÉTODOS: se utilizó una muestra de habla obtenida a partir de conversaciones grabadas con 35 pacientes, 12 hombres y 23 mujeres, con afasia de Broca. A partir de esa muestra se seleccionaron las producciones silábicas de estructura CCV y de estructura CV para determinar las frecuencias respectivas y los posibles errores o sustituciones de fonemas. RESULTADOS: del total de estructuras silábicas analizadas ninguna mostró una estructura diferente a la de la sílaba española. Tanto la estructura CCV como la CV se han mantenido en la muestra de habla afásica analizada. Ninguno de los errores observados contiene secuencias de sonidos mal formadas. CONCLUSIONES: independientemente de los procesos de reducción, asimilación, sustitución, elisión de segmentos, se ha podido determinar que en la producción de habla de los sujetos afásicos hay un gran apego a la estructura silábica. Se sugiere, además, que la sílaba es una unidad funcional que se codifica en el nivel de programación fonética.PURPOSE: to analyze the [+liquid] phonemes in two types of syllabic structure in production of speech of 35 Venezuelan subjects whit Broca's aphasia, with the purpose of determining if these structures are conserved or lost. METHODS: a sample of speech was used. It was obtained from conversations recorded with the subjects, 12 men and 23 women. From that sample, the syllabic productions with CCV and CV structure were selected in order to determine the frequencies and the possible errors or substitutions. RESULTS: from the total of analyzed syllabic structures, all of them showed a similar structure to the Spanish syllable. The CCV and CV structures were maintained. None of the observed errors contained sequences of badly formed sounds. CONCLUSIONS: it was possible to determine that in the production of speech of the aphasic subjects there is a great link with the syllabic structure, regardless of the reduction, assimilation, substitution, and elision processes. In addition, it is suggested that the syllable is a functional unit codified in the level of phonetic programming.

Objective Localizing expressive language function has been challenging using the conventional magnetoencephalography (MEG) source modeling methods. The present MEG study presents a new accurate and precise approach in localizing the language areas using a high-resolution MEG source imaging method. Methods In 32 patients with brain tumors and/or epilepsies, an object-naming task was used to evoke MEG responses. Our Fast-VESTAL source imaging method was then applied to the MEG data in order to localize the brain areas evoked by the object-naming task. Results The Fast-VESTAL results showed that Broca’s area was accurately localized to the pars opercularis (BA 44) and/or the pars triangularis (BA 45) in all patients. Fast-VESTAL also accurately localized Wernicke’s area to the posterior aspect of the superior temporal gyri in BA 22, as well as several additional brain areas. Furthermore, we found that the latency of the main peak of the response in Wernicke’s area was significantly earlier than that of Broca’s area. Conclusion In all patients, Fast-VESTAL analysis established accurate and precise localizations of Broca’s area, as well as other language areas. The responses in Wernicke’s area were also shown to significantly precede those of Broca’s area. Significance The present study demonstrates that using Fast-VESTAL, MEG can serve as an accurate and reliable functional imaging tool for presurgical mapping of language functions in patients with brain tumors and/or epilepsies.
