Nuclear Theory - Abstract
The stability of the nuclear matter system with respect to density fluctuations is examined exploring in detail the pole structure of the electro-nuclear response functions. Making extensive use of the method of dispersion integrals we calculate the full polarization propagator not only for real energies in the spacelike and timelike regime but also in the whole complex energy plane. The latter proved to be necessary in order to identify unphysical causality violating poles which are the consequence of a neglection of vacuum polarization. On the contrary it is shown that Dirac sea effects stabilize the nuclear matter system shifting the unphysical pole from the upper energy plane back to the real axis. The exchange of strength between these real timelike collective excitations and the spacelike energy regime is shown to lead to a reduction of the quasielastic peak as it is seen in electron scattering experiments. Neglecting vacuum polarization one also obtains a reduction of the quasielastic peak but in this case the strength is partly shifted to the causality violating pole mentioned above which consequently cannot be considered as a physical reliable result. Our investigation of the response function in the energy region above the threshold of nucleon anti-nucleon production leads to another remarkable result. Treating the nucleons as point-like Dirac particles we show that for any isospin independent NN-interaction RPA-correlations provide a reduction of the production amplitude for $p\bar p$-pairs by a factor 2., Comment: 19 pages Latex including 12 postscript figures

Nuclear Theory ,High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
Within the one-loop approximation of baryon chiral perturbation theory we calculate all one-pion and two-pion exchange contributions to the nucleon-nucleon interaction. In fact we construct the elastic NN-scattering amplitude up to and including third order in small momenta. The phase shifts with orbital angular momentum $L\geq2 $ and the mixing angles with $J\geq2$ are given parameterfree and thus allow for a detailed test of chiral symmetry in the two-nucleon system. We find that for the D-waves the $2\pi$-exchange corrections are too large as compared with empirical phase shifts, signaling the increasing importance of shorter range effects in lower partial waves. For higher partial waves, especially for G-waves, the model independent $2\pi$-exchange corrections bring the chiral prediction close to empirical NN phase shifts. We propose to use the chiral NN phase shifts with $L\geq 3$ as input in a future phase shift analysis. Furthermore, we compute the irreducible two-pion exchange NN-potentials in coordinate space. They turn out to be of van-der-Waals type, with exponential screening of two-pion mass range., Comment: 30 pages, TeX,12 figures in ps , submitted to Nucl. Phys. A

High Energy Physics - Phenomenology - Abstract
We show that the s-wave pion-nuclear potential which reproduces the deeply bound pionic states in Pb, recently discovered at GSI, is remarkably close to the one constructed directly from low energy theorems based on chiral symmetry. Converting this information into an effective pion mass we find $m_\pi^\star/m_\pi\simeq 1.13$ in the center of the Pb nucleus, and $m_\pi^\star/m_\pi\simeq 1.07$ in symmetric nuclear matter., Comment: 6 pages, TeX, 2 figures in ps , submitted to Phys. relativistic SPS NA49 flow centrality - Abstract
New data with a minimum bias trigger for 158 GeV/nucleon Pb + Pb have been analyzed. Directed and elliptic flow as a function of rapidity of the particles and centrality of the collision are presented. The centrality dependence of the ratio of elliptic flow to the initial space elliptic anisotropy is compared to models.

Two-particle correlation functions of negative hadrons over wide phase space, and transverse mass spectra of negative hadrons and deuterons near mid-rapidity have been measured in central Pb+Pb collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. A novel Coulomb correction procedure for the negative two-particle correlations is employed making use of the measured oppositely charged particle correlation. Within an expanding source scenario these results are used to extract the dynamic characteristics of the hadronic source, resolving the ambiguities between the temperature and transverse expansion velocity of the source, that are unavoidable when single and two particle spectra are analysed separately. The source shape, the total duration of the source expansion, the duration of particle emission, the freeze-out temperature and the longitudinal and transverse expansion velocities are deduced.

The transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of net protons and negatively charged hadrons have been measured for minimum bias proton-nucleus and deuteron-gold interactions, as well as central oxygen-gold and sulphur-nucleus collisions at 200 GeV per nucleon. The rapidity density of net protons at midrapidity in central nucleus-nucleus collisions increases both with target mass for sulphur projectiles and with the projectile mass for a gold target. The shape of the rapidity distributions of net protons forward of midrapidity for d+Au and central S+Au collisions is similar. The average rapidity loss is larger than 2 units of rapidity for reactions with the gold target. The transverse momentum spectra of net protons for all reactions can be described by a thermal distribution with 'temperatures' between 145±11 MeV (p+S interactions) and 244±43 MeV (central S+Au collisions). The multiplicity of negatively charged hadrons increases with the mass of the colliding system. The shape of the transverse momentum spectra of negatively charged hadrons changes from minimum bias p+p and p+S interactions to p+Au and central nucleus-nucleus collisions. The mean transverse momentum is almost constant in the vicinity of midrapidity and shows little variation with the target and projectile masses. The average number of produced negatively charged hadrons per participant baryon increases slightly from p+p, p+A to central S+S,Ag collisions.

Questions how anthropomorphic human computer interface design should be. Observes: the impulse to anthropomorphize technology has been longstanding, employed with artifacts besides computers; evolution of technologies proceeds through an introductory phase wherein a culture becomes acclimatized to the new technology; and the perception of anthropomorphism in human computer interface is complicated, since "computers" were first people, not machines. Argues that exploring the written work of William Stillman of Rhode Island could help balance the appraisal of 19th-century American technical communication. Reviews the writing and graphics in his "Miscellaneous Compositions" (1851) and patents from 1836 and 1839. NA49 is a fixed-target, heavy-ion experiment at the 200 GEV/nucleon Pb beam of the SPS at CERN, expected to take data in late 1994. Because of the unprecedented number of charged particles (up to 2000) emerging from a single Pb-induced nuclear reaction at these energies, the demands on various parts of the experimental setup are extreme. For the data acquisition system a burst input data rate of 750 Mbyte/sec from more than 150,000 electronic channels has to be buffered and compressed to allow the recording of events to magnetic media at rates around 15 Mbyte/sec with reasonable effort and cost.
