Abstract

The electronic density of states (DOS) highlights fundamental properties of materials that oftentimes dictate their properties, such as the band gap and Van Hove singularities. In this short note, we discuss how sharp features of the density of states can be obscured by smearing methods (such as the Gaussian and Fermi smearing methods) when calculating the DOS. While the common approach to reach a "converged" density of states of a material is to increase the discrete k-point mesh density, we show that the DOS calculated by smearing methods can appear to converge but not to the correct DOS. Employing the tetrahedron method for Brillouin zone integration resolves key features of the density of states far better than smearing methods.

Abstract

Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Abstract

Discovery of novel high-performance materials with earth-abundant and environmentally friendly elements is a key task for civil applications based on advanced thermoelectric technology. Advancements in this area are greatly limited by the traditional trial-and-error method, which is both time-consuming and expensive. The materials genome initiative can provide a powerful strategy to screen for potential novel materials using high-throughput calculations, materials characterization, and synthesis. In this study, we developed a modified diffusion-couple high-throughput synthesis method and an automated histogram analysis technique to quickly screen high-performance copper chalcogenide thermoelectric materials, which has been well demonstrated in the ternary Cu-Sn-S compounds. A new copper chalcogenide with the composition of Cu₇Sn₃S₁₀ was discovered. Studies on crystal structure, band gap, and electrical and thermal transport properties were performed to show that it is a promising thermoelectric material with ultralow lattice thermal conductivity, moderate band gap, and decent electrical conductivity. Via Cl doping, the thermoelectric dimensionless figure of merit zT reaches 0.8 at 750 K, being among the highest values reported in Cu-Sn-S ternary materials. The modified diffusion-couple high-throughput synthesis method and automated histogram analysis technique developed in this study also shed light on the development of other advanced thermoelectric and functional materials.

19. Insulin-taking behavior and memory problems among people with diabetes in five countries: findings from a web survey

In three countries, focus groups and interviews with 64 patients treated with insulin were used to develop survey items. Three types of memory problems associated with insulin-taking were examined: unintentionally forgetting (UF), questioning whether or not one took a dose (QT), and questioning how much was taken (QD) over the past month. The survey focused on respondents who had experienced at least one of these memory problems.Results: The incidence of memory problems was high; 93.3% of those eligible for the survey reported having had a memory issue in the previous month. A total of 1,754 patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes completed the web survey. Sixty-eight percent of respondents reported a UF, 79.6% a QT, and 54.7% a QD. A total of 35.9% of respondents reported experiencing all three memory problems. Respondents reported that memory problems had negative impacts on physical and emotional functioning, as well as time and functioning at work. Many respondents indicated that memory problems led them to taking additional blood glucose measurements and contacting physicians/health care professionals. The results demonstrated some significant differences across countries, some significant variation across patient demographics and disease characteristics, and few significant differences across types of insulin regime.Conclusion: Memory problems related to insulin-taking among people with diabetes were experienced by almost all patients. Memory problems are associated with poorer patient well-being and functioning, increased use of health care resources, lost time, and reduced functioning at work. Memory problems should be considered in diabetes treatment in order to improve insulin adherence, diabetes management, and patient outcomes.Keywords: insulin, memory problems, diabetes, web survey

Contains fulltext : 80301.pdf (publisher's version ) (Closed access), A conceptual model was developed of the impact of ovarian stimulation on women's functioning and wellbeing. A patient-reported outcome (PRO) measure was generated based on this model. Qualitative measures used comprised a discussion guide and coding system devised according to the Food and Drug Administration guidelines for developing PRO measures. Data were gathered through telephone and face-to-face interviews and focus groups. A total of 47 women across nine fertility healthcare providers in France, UK and USA were included in the analysis. The mean age of patients was 35 years (range 24-44). Based on data collected and prior postulated domains, a conceptual model of the impact of ovarian stimulation was developed. Three major (psychological, interference in daily life, logistics) and one minor (side effects) domain were identified. Short-term consequences included problems with psychological health and productivity. Longer term consequences included depression and poor self-image. Factors that modified the impact of ovarian stimulation were also identified. This is the first model providing insight into the impact of ovarian stimulation on women's functioning and wellbeing. Once validated, it can be applied in quantitative research to improve understanding of the impact of ovarian stimulation, and assist in developing more patient-centred approaches to treatment.
