Abstract

To further improve the understanding of in vitro biological effects of incorporated radionuclides, it is essential to accurately determine cellular absorbed doses. In the case of β emitters, the cross-dose is a major contribution, and can involve up to millions of cells. Realistic and efficient computational models are needed for that purpose. Conventionally, distances between each cell are calculated and the related dose contributions are cumulated to get the total cross-dose (standard method). In this work, we developed a novel approach for the calculation of the cross-absorbed dose, based on the use of the radial distribution function (rdf)) that describes the spatial properties of the cellular model considered. The dynamic molecular tool LAMMPS was used to create 3D cellular models and compute rdfs for various conditions of cell density, volume size, and configuration type (lattice and randomized geometry). The novel method is suitable for any radionuclide of nuclear medicine. Here, the model was applied for the labeling of cells with 18F-FDG used for PET imaging, and first validated by comparison with other reference methods. Mean Scross values calculated with the novel approach versus the standard method agreed very well (relative differences less that 0.1%). Implementation of the rdf -based approach with LAMMPS allowed to achieved results considerably faster than with the standard method, the computing time decreasing from hours to seconds for 106 cells. The rdf -based approach was also faster and easier to accommodate more complex cellular models than the standard and other published methods. Finally, a comparative study of the mean Scross for different types of configuration was carried out, as a function of the cell density and the volume size, allowing to better understand the impact of the configuration on the cross-absorbed dose. Abstract

National audience; In vivo spectrometry is a very efficient method used for the monitoring of workers with internal contamination risks that enables the assessment of the incorporated activity and/or its distribution in the body. Typical calibration of the counting systems relies on the use of physical phantoms that are of limited anatomical realism. This work highlights the benefit of new numerical 3D representations to improve the internal dosimetry and to optimize the monitoring of female workers with in vivo spectrometry measurements. A library of 3D Mesh and NURBS (non uniform rational B-splines) female thoracic phantoms was hence developed, enabling the correction of calibration coefficients typically assessed using the Livermore male phantom. The morphology-induced variations in counting efficiency were next put into the equation. The developed equation revokes the need for developing a subject-equivalent anthropomorphic phantom and replaces the time-consuming Monte Carlo simulations for the estimation of counting efficiency. This equation was first validated against simulated data and then used to transform a measured Livermore calibration curve to estimate the counting efficiency for any female worker monitored using in vivo measurements. © 2011 EDP; Les mesures spectrométriques par anthroporadiamétrie, utilisées pour la surveillance des travailleurs exposés à des risques de contamination interne, permettent une estimation rapide et fiable de la nature des radionucléides incorporés ainsi que de leur activité. Les étalonnages typiques des systèmes de comptage dédiés aux mesures in vivo reposent sur l’utilisation de fantômes physiques d’un réalisme anatomique limité. Ce travail met en évidence l’intérêt des nouvelles technologies de l’infographie, en proposant de nouvelles représentations 3D graphiques afin d’optimiser la dosimétrie interne et de la surveillance des travailleuses du nucléaire par anthroporadiamétrie. Une librairie de modèles thoraciques féminins aux formats Mesh et NURBS (non uniform rational B-splines) a ainsi été développée et a permis la correction des coefficients d’étalonnages expérimentalement obtenus à l’aide du mannequin masculin Livermore. La variation de l’efficacité de comptage avec la morphologie du fantôme a ensuite été mise en équation. Cette équation permet d’éviter la création laborieuse d’un fantôme équivalent travailleuse et de s’affranchir des simulations Monte Carlo très coûteuses en temps. Après validation à l’aide de données simulées, cette équation a été utilisée pour déduire, à partir des mesures expérimentales Livermore, les efficacités de comptage pour toute travailleuse surveillée par anthroporadiamétrie
