Search

Star formation in the early Universe has left its imprint on the chemistry of observable stars in galaxies. We derive elemental abundances and the slope of the low-mass end of the initial mass function (IMF) for a sample of 25 very massive galaxies, separated into brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) and their massive satellites. The elemental abundances of BGCs and their satellites are similar, but for some elements, satellite galaxies show a correlation with the global velocity dispersion. Using a subset of derived elemental abundances, we model the star formation histories of these galaxies with chemical evolution models, and predict the high-mass end slope of the IMF and star formation timescales. The high-mass end IMF slope of the satellite galaxies correlates with the global velocity dispersion. The low- and the high-mass end IMF slopes are weakly correlated in a general sense that top heavy IMFs are paired with bottom heavy IMFs. Our results do not necessarily imply that the IMF was simultaneously bottom and top heavy. Instead, our findings can be considered consistent with a temporal variation in the IMF, where, for massive galaxies, the high-mass end IMF slope is representative of the very early age and the low-mass end slope of the later star formation. In the past 15 years, the triaxial Schwarzschild orbit-superposition code by van den Bosch et al. (2008) has been widely applied to study the dynamics of galaxies. Recently, Quenneville et al. (2022) reported a bug in the orbit calculation of this code, specifically in the mirroring procedure that is used to speed up the computation. We have fixed the incorrect mirroring in DYNAMITE, which is the publicly-released successor of the triaxial Schwarzschild code by van den Bosch et al. (2008). In this study, we provide a thorough quantification of how this bug has affected the results of dynamical analyses performed with this code. We compare results obtained with the original and corrected versions of DYNAMITE, and discuss the differences in the phase-space distribution of a single orbit and in the global stellar orbit distribution, in the mass estimate of the central black hole in the highly triaxial galaxy PGC 46832, and in the measurement of intrinsic shape and enclosed mass for more than 50 galaxies. Focusing on the typical scientific applications of a Schwarzschild triaxial code, in all our tests we find that differences are negligible with respect to the statistical and systematic uncertainties. We conclude that previous results with the van den Bosch et al. (2008) triaxial Schwarzschild code are not significantly affected by the incorrect mirroring., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures. We investigate the presence of a central black hole (BH) in B023-G078, M31's most massive globular cluster. We present high-resolution, adaptive-optics assisted, integral-field spectroscopic kinematics from Gemini/NIFS that shows a strong rotation ($\sim$20 km/s) and a velocity dispersion rise towards the center (37 km/s). We combine the kinematic data with a mass model based on a two-component fit to $HST$ ACS/HRC data of the cluster to estimate the mass of a putative BH. Our dynamical modeling suggests a $>$3$\sigma$ detection of a BH component of 9.1$^{+2.6}_{-2.8}\times$10$^4$ M$_\odot$ (1$\sigma$ uncertainties). The inferred stellar mass of the cluster is 6.22$^{+0.03}_{-0.05}\times$10$^6$ M$_\odot$, consistent with previous estimates, thus the BH makes up 1.5% of its mass. We examine whether the observed kinematics are caused by a collection of stellar mass BHs by modeling an extended dark mass as a Plummer profile. The upper limit on the size scale of the extended mass is 0.56 pc (95% confidence), which does not rule out an extended mass. There is compelling evidence that B023-G078 is the tidally stripped nucleus of a galaxy with a stellar mass $>$10$^9$ M$_{\odot}$, including its high mass, two-component luminosity profile, color, metallicity gradient, and spread in metallicity. Given the emerging evidence that the central BH occupation fraction of $>$10$^9$ M$_{\odot}$ galaxies is high, the most plausible interpretation of the kinematic data is that B023-G078 hosts a central BH. As part of the Measuring Black Holes in Below Milky Way-mass (M$^\star$) galaxies (MBHBM$^\star$) Project, we present a dynamical measurement of the supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass in the nearby lenticular galaxy NGC 3593, using cold molecular gas $^{12}$CO(2-1) emission observed at an angular resolution of $\approx0''.3$ ($\approx10$ pc) with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Our ALMA observations reveal a circumnuclear molecular gas disc (CND) elongated along the galaxy major axis and rotating around the SMBH. Using dynamical modelling, the molecular gas kinematics allow us to infer a SMBH mass $M_{\rm BH}=2.40_{-1.05}^{+1.87}\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ (only statistical uncertainties at the $3\sigma$ level). We also detect a massive core of cold molecular gas (CMC) of mass $M_{\rm CMC}=(5.4\pm1.2)\times10^6$ M$_\odot$ and effective (half-mass) radius $r_{\rm CMC,e}=11.2\pm2.8$ pc, co-spatial with a nuclear star cluster (NSC) of mass $M_{\rm NSC}=(1.67\pm0.48)\times10^7$ M$_\odot$ and effective radius $r_{\rm NSC,e}=5.0\pm1.0$~pc (or $0''.15\pm0''.03$). The mass profiles of the CMC and NSC are well described by S\'{e}rsic functions with indices $1-1.4$. Our $M_{\rm BH}$ and $M_{\rm NSC}$ estimates for NGC 3593 agree well with the recently compiled $M_{\rm BH}$-$M_{\rm NSC}$ scaling relation. Although the $M_{\rm NSC}$ uncertainty is twice the inferred $M_{\rm BH}$, the rapid central rise of the rotation velocities of the CND (as the radius decreases) clearly suggests a SMBH. Indeed, our dynamical models show that even if $M_{\rm NSC}$ is at the upper end of its allowed range, the evidence for a black hole does not vanish, but remains with a lower limit of $M_{\rm BH}>3\times10^5$ M$_\odot$., Comment: 27 pages, 18 Figures, 8 Tables. We analyse VLT/MUSE observations of PGC 046832, the brightest cluster galaxy of Abell 3556. The velocity structure of this galaxy is startling and shows two reversals in sign along the minor axis, and one along the major axis. We use triaxial Schwarzschild models to infer the intrinsic shape, central black hole mass and orbit distribution of this galaxy. The shape determination suggests that the galaxy is highly triaxial in the centre (almost prolate) but has a low triaxiality (almost oblate) in the outer parts. The orbit distribution of the best-fit Schwarzschild model shows that the kinematic reversal along the projected minor axis is driven by a slight asymmetry in the distribution and amount of long axis tubes in the inner parts. The kinematic reversals along the projected major axis are driven by a high fraction of counter-rotating orbits at intermediate radii in the galaxy. Using chemical tagging of orbits in the Schwarzschild model, we do not find evidence for any association of these orbits with specific stellar population parameters. Although the inner part of the galaxy almost certainty formed through one or more dry mergers producing the prolate shape, the outer parts are consistent with both accretion and in situ formation. While axisymmetric models suggests the presence of a supermassive black hole with mass $\sim 6 \times 10^9$M$_{\odot}$ and $\sim 10^{10}$M$_{\odot}$ (with Schwarzschild and Jeans modelling, resp), triaxial Schwarzschild models provide only an upper limit of $\sim 2 \times 10^9$M$_{\odot}$., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS. 23 pages, 28 figures

The formation of nuclear star clusters (NSCs) remains an open question. In this work, we use spatially resolved HST/STIS spectroscopic observations of three nearby NSCs (hosted by NGC 5102, NGC 5206, and NGC 205) to constrain their formation histories by exploring radial variations of the stellar populations within each cluster. Utilizing full-spectrum fitting, we find substantial age and metallicity gradients within the central 0."9 (16~pc) of the NSC in NGC 5102 where populations near the center are young/metal-rich (age ~400~Myr and [M/H] ~-0.4) and become older/metal-poor at larger radii (mean age ~1~Gyr and mean [M/H] ~-1.6 in the radial range [0."3, 0."9]). This behavior suggests that the young/metal-rich population at the center was formed from a period of in situ formation, while the older/metal-poor populations were likely formed by inspiraled globular clusters. The two broad populations observed in the NGC 5102 NSC (young/metal-rich and old/metal-poor) appear to be linked to the transition between the two morphological components of the NSC derived from the surface-brightness profile in Nguyen et al. (2018)(arXiv:1711.04314). The radial ranges explored in NGC 5206 and NGC 205 were much smaller due to poor data quality; in NGC 5206 we find a similar metallicity gradient to NGC 5102 (but with much lower significance), while the data for NGC 205 is too poor to reach any conclusions. We use spectra observed with the integral-field spectrograph MUSE to reveal the central kinematics of the Galactic globular cluster Messier 80 (M80, NGC 6093). Using observations obtained with the recently commissioned narrow-field mode of MUSE, we are able to analyse 932 stars in the central 7.5 arcsec by 7.5 arcsec of the cluster for which no useful spectra previously existed. Mean radial velocities of individual stars derived from the spectra are compared to predictions from axisymmetric Jeans models, resulting in radial profiles of the velocity dispersion, the rotation amplitude, and the mass-to-light ratio. The new data allow us to search for an intermediate-mass black hole (IMBH) in the centre of the cluster. Our Jeans model finds two similarly probable solutions around different dynamical cluster centres. The first solution has a centre close to the photometric estimates available in the literature and does not need an IMBH to fit the observed kinematics. The second solution contains a location of the cluster centre that is offset by about 2.4 arcsec from the first one and it needs an IMBH mass of $4600^{+1700}_{-1400}$ solar masses. N-body models support the existence of an IMBH in this cluster with a mass of up to 6000 solar masses in this cluster, although models without an IMBH provide a better fit to the observed surface brightness profile. They further indicate that the cluster has lost nearly all stellar-mass black holes. In this paper we present the new deep images from the VEGAS survey of three massive ($M_{*} \simeq 10^{12}$~M$_\odot$) galaxies from the MUSE Most Massive Galaxies (M3G) project, with distances in the range $151\leq D \leq 183$ Mpc: PGC007748, PGC015524 and PGC049940. The long integration time and the wide field of view of OmegaCam@VST allowed us to map the light and color distributions down to $\mu_g\simeq30$~mag/arcsec$^2$ and out to $\sim 2R_e$. The deep data are crucial to estimate the contribution of the different galaxy's components, in particular the accreted fraction in the stellar halo. The available integral-field observations with MUSE cover a limited portion of each galaxy (out to $\sim 1R_e$), but, from the imaging analysis we find that they map the kinematics and stellar population beyond the first transition radius, where the contribution of the accreted component starts to dominate. The main goal of this work is to correlate the scales of the different components derived from the image analysis with the kinematics and stellar population profiles from the MUSE data. Results were used to address the assembly history of the three galaxies with the help of the theoretical predictions. Our results suggest that PGC049940 has the lowest accreted mass fraction of 77%. The higher accreted mass fraction estimated for PGC007748 and PGC015524 (86% and 89%, respectively), combined with the flat $\lambda_R$ profiles suggest that a great majority of the mass has been acquired through major mergers, which have also shaped the shallower metallicity profiles observed at larger radii., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. 12 pages, 7 figures

Aims. We use stellar line-of-sight velocities to constrain the dark matter-density profile of Eridanus 2, an ultra-faint dwarf galaxy ($M_\mathrm{V} = -7.1$, $M_* \approx 9 \times 10^4\,M_\odot$). We furthermore derive constraints on fundamental properties of self-interacting and fuzzy dark matter scenarios. Methods. We present new observations of Eridanus 2 from MUSE-Faint, a survey of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies with MUSE on the Very Large Telescope, and determine line-of-sight velocities for stars inside the half-light radius. Combined with literature data, we have 92 stellar tracers out to twice the half-light radius. We constrain models of cold dark matter, self-interacting dark matter, and fuzzy dark matter with these tracers, using CJAM and pyGravSphere for the dynamical analysis. Results. We find substantial evidence for cold dark matter over self-interacting dark matter and weak evidence for fuzzy dark matter over cold dark matter. We find a virial mass $M_{200} \sim 10^8\,M_\odot$ and astrophysical factors $J(\alpha_\mathrm{c}^J) \sim 10^{11}\,M_\odot^2\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-5}$ and $D(\alpha_\mathrm{c}^D) \sim 10^2$-$10^{2.5}\,M_\odot\,\mathrm{kpc}^{-2}$. We do not resolve a core ($r_\mathrm{c} < 47\,\mathrm{pc}$, 68-% level) or soliton ($r_\mathrm{sol} < 7.2\,\mathrm{pc}$, 68-% level). These limits are equivalent to an effective self-interaction coefficient $f\Gamma < 2.2 \times 10^{-29}\,\mathrm{cm}^3\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\,\mathrm{eV}^{-1}\,c^2$ and a fuzzy-dark-matter particle mass $m_\mathrm{a} > 4.0 \times 10^{-20}\,\mathrm{eV}\,c^{-2}$. The constraint on self-interaction is complementary to those from gamma-ray searches. The constraint on fuzzy-dark-matter particle mass is inconsistent with those obtained for larger dwarf galaxies, suggesting that the flattened density profiles of those galaxies are not caused by fuzzy dark matter. We estimate the mass of the intermediate-mass black hole at the heart of the dwarf elliptical galaxy NGC 404 using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the molecular interstellar medium at an unprecedented linear resolution of ~0.5 pc, in combination with existing stellar kinematic information. These ALMA observations reveal a central disc/torus of molecular gas clearly rotating around the black hole. This disc is surrounded by a morphologically and kinematically complex flocculent distribution of molecular clouds, that we resolve in detail. Continuum emission is detected from the central parts of NGC 404, likely arising from the Rayleigh-Jeans tail of emission from dust around the nucleus, and potentially from dusty massive star-forming clumps at discrete locations in the disc. Several dynamical measurements of the black hole mass in this system have been made in the past, but they do not agree. We show here that both the observed molecular gas and stellar kinematics independently require a ~5x10$^5$ Msun black hole once we include the contribution of the molecular gas to the potential. Our best estimate comes from the high-resolution molecular gas kinematics, suggesting the black hole mass of this system is 5.5$^{+4.1}_{-3.8}\times$10$^5$ Msun (at the 99% confidence level), in good agreement with our revised stellar kinematic measurement and broadly consistent with extrapolations from the black hole mass - velocity dispersion and black hole mass - bulge mass relations. We aim to provide spectroscopic evidence regarding the nature of the putative star cluster in Eridanus 2 and to place constraints on the mass and abundance of massive astrophysical compact halo objects (MACHOs) as a constituent of dark matter. Methods. We present spectroscopic observations of the central square arcminute of Eridanus 2 from MUSE-Faint, a survey of ultra-faint dwarf galaxies with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer on the Very Large Telescope. We derive line-of-sight velocities for possible member stars of the putative cluster and for stars in the centre of Eridanus 2. We discuss the existence of the cluster and determine new constraints for MACHOs using the Fokker-Planck diffusion approximation. Results. Out of 182 extracted spectra, we identify 26 member stars of Eridanus 2, seven of which are possible cluster members. We find intrinsic mean line-of-sight velocities of $79.7^{+3.1}_{-3.8}\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ and $76.0^{+3.2}_{-3.7}\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ for the cluster and the bulk of Eridanus 2, respectively, and intrinsic velocity dispersions of ${<}7.6\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$ (68-$\%$ upper limit) and $10.3^{+3.9}_{-3.2}\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}$, respectively. This indicates the cluster most likely exists as a distinct dynamical population hosted by Eridanus 2, without surplus of dark matter over the background distribution. Among the member stars in the bulk of Eridanus 2, we find possible carbon stars, alluding to the existence of an intermediate-age population. We derive constraints on the fraction of dark matter that can consist of MACHOs with a given mass between $1$-$10^5\,M_\mathrm{sun}$. For dark matter consisting purely of MACHOs, the mass of the MACHOs must be less than ${\sim}7.6\,M_\mathrm{sun}$ and ${\sim}44\,M_\mathrm{sun}$ at a $68$- and $95$-$\%$ confidence level, respectively. We combine MUSE spectroscopy and Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet (UV) photometry to perform a study of the chemistry and dynamics of the Galactic globular cluster Messier 80 (M80, NGC 6093). Previous studies have revealed three stellar populations that not only vary in their light-element abundances, but also in their radial distributions, with concentration decreasing with increasing nitrogen enrichment. This remarkable trend, which sets M80 apart from the other Galactic globular clusters, points towards a complex formation and evolutionary history. To better understand how M80 formed and evolved, revealing its internal kinematics is key. We find that the most N-enriched population rotates faster than the other two populations at a 2 sigma confidence level. While our data further suggest that the intermediate population shows the least amount of rotation, this trend is rather marginal (1 - 2 sigma). Using axisymmetric Jeans models, we show that these findings can be explained from the radial distributions of the populations if they possess different angular momenta. Nuclear Star Clusters (NSCs) are dense clusters of stars that reside in the centers of a majority of the galaxies. In this paper, we study the density profiles for 29 galaxies in a volume-limited survey within 10 Mpc to characterize their NSCs. These galaxies span a 3$\times$10$^8$ - 8$\times$10$^{10}$ M$_\odot$ and a wide range of Hubble types. We use high-resolution Hubble space telescope archival data to create luminosity models for the galaxies using S\'ersic profiles to parameterize the NSCs. We also provide estimates for photometric masses of NSCs and their host galaxies using color-M/L relationships and examine their correlation. We use the Multi-Gaussian Expansion (MGE) to derive the NSC densities and their 3-D mass density profiles. The 3-D density profiles characterize the NSC densities on the scales as small as $\sim$1 pc, approaching the likely spheres of influence for black holes in these objects. We find that these densities correlate with galaxy mass, with galaxies most NSCs being denser than typical globular clusters. We parametrize the 3-D NSC density profiles, and their scatter and slope as a function of galaxy stellar mass to enable the construction of realistic nuclear mass profiles. These are useful in predicting the rate of tidal disruption events in galaxies. We have obtained data for 41 star forming galaxies in the MUSE Atlas of Disks (MAD) survey with VLT/MUSE. These data allow us, at high resolution of a few 100 pc, to extract ionized gas kinematics ($V, \sigma$) of the centers of nearby star forming galaxies spanning 3 dex in stellar mass. This paper outlines the methodology for measuring the ionized gas kinematics, which we will use in subsequent papers of this survey. We also show how the maps can be used to study the kinematics of diffuse ionized gas for galaxies of various inclinations and masses. Using two different methods to identify the diffuse ionized gas, we measure rotation velocities of this gas for a subsample of 6 galaxies. We find that the diffuse ionized gas rotates on average slower than the star forming gas with lags of 0-10 km/s while also having higher velocity dispersion. The magnitude of these lags is on average 5 km/s lower than observed velocity lags between ionized and molecular gas. Using Jeans models to interpret the lags in rotation velocity and the increase in velocity dispersion we show that most of the diffuse ionized gas kinematics are consistent with its emission originating from a somewhat thicker layer than the star forming gas, with a scale height that is lower than that of the stellar disk., Comment: 22 pages, accepted by MNRAS

To understand the stellar population content of dwarf early-type galaxies (dEs) and its environmental dependence, we compare the slopes and intrinsic scatter of color-magnitude relations (CMRs) for three nearby clusters, Fornax, Virgo and Coma. Additionally we present and compare internal color profiles of these galaxies to identify central blue regions with younger stars. We use the imaging of the HST/ACS Fornax cluster in the magnitude range of -18.7 <= M_g' <= -16.0, to derive magnitudes, colors and color profiles, which we compare with literature measurements. Based on analysis of the color profiles, we report a large number of dEs with young stellar populations in their center in all three clusters. While for Virgo and Coma the number of blue-cored dEs is found to be 85 +/- 2% and 53 +/- 3% respectively, for Fornax, we find that all galaxies have a blue core. We show that bluer cores reside in fainter dEs, similar to the trend seen in nucleated dEs. We find no correlation between the luminosity of the galaxy and the size of its blue core. Moreover, a comparison of the CMRs of the three clusters shows that the scatter in Virgo's CMR is considerably larger than in the Fornax and Coma clusters. Presenting adaptive smoothing we show that the galaxies on the blue side of the CMR often show evidence for dust extinction, which strengthens the interpretation that the bluer colors are due to young stellar populations. We also find that outliers on the red side of the CMR are more compact than expected for their luminosity. We find several of these red outliers in Virgo, often close to more massive galaxies. No red outlying compact early-types are found in Fornax and Coma in this magnitude range while we find three in the Virgo cluster. We suggest that the large number of outliers and larger scatter found for the Virgo cluster CMR is a result of Virgo's different assembly history., Comment: 24 pages, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present the first measurement of the mass of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in the nearby double-barred spiral galaxy NGC 3504 as part of the Measuring Black Holes Below the Milky Way ($M_{\star}$) mass galaxies (MBHBM$_{\star}$) Project. Our analysis is based on Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Cycle-5 observations of the ${\rm ^{12}CO(2-1)}$ emission line. NGC 3504 has a circumnuclear gas disk (CND), which has a relatively high-velocity dispersion of 30 \kms. Our dynamical models of the CND yield a \Mbh~of $M_{\rm BH}=1.02^{+0.18}_{-0.15}\times10^7$\Msun and a mass-to-light ratio in $H$-band of \ml$_{\rm H}=0.66^{+1.44}_{-0.65}$ (\Msun/\Lsun). This black hole (BH) mass is consistent with BH--galaxy scaling relations. We also detect a central deficiency in the ${\rm ^{12}CO(2-1)}$ integrated intensity map with a diameter of 2.7 pc at the putative position of the SMBH. However, this hole is filled by a dense gas tracer ${\rm CS(5-4)}$ that peaks at the galaxy center found in one of the three low-velocity-resolution continuum spectral correlators. The ${\rm CS(5-4)}$ line has the same kinematics with the ${\rm ^{12}CO(2-1)}$ line within the CND, suggesting that it is also an alternative transition for measuring the central \Mbh~in NGC 3504 probably more accurately than the current commonly used of ${\rm ^{12}CO(2-1)}$ due to its centralization., Comment: 25 pages, 15 Figures, 6 Tables, Submitted to ApJ

We improve the dynamical black hole (BH) mass estimates in three nearby low-mass early-type galaxies--NGC 205, NGC 5102, and NGC 5206. We use new \hst/STIS spectroscopy to fit the star formation histories of the nuclei in these galaxies, and use these measurements to create local color--mass-to-light ratio (\ml) relations. We then create new mass models from \hst~imaging and combined with adaptive optics kinematics, we use Jeans dynamical models to constrain their BH masses. The masses of the central BHs in NGC 5102 and NGC 5206 are both below one million solar masses and are consistent with our previous estimates, $9.12_{-1.53}^{+1.84}\times10^5$\Msun~and $6.31_{-2.74}^{+1.06}\times10^5$\Msun~(3$\sigma$ errors), respectively. However, for NGC 205, the improved models suggest the presence of a BH for the first time, with a best-fit mass of $6.8_{-6.7}^{+95.6}\times10^3$\Msun~(3$\sigma$ errors). This is the least massive central BH mass in a galaxy detected using any method. We discuss the possible systematic errors of this measurement in detail. Using this BH mass, the existing upper limits of both X-ray, and radio emissions in the nucleus of NGC 205 suggest an accretion rate $\lesssim$$10^{-5}$ of the Eddington rate. We also discuss the color--\mleff~relations in our nuclei and find that the slopes of these vary significantly between nuclei. We study the physical properties of the ionized gas in local disks using the sample of 38 nearby $\sim10^{8.5-11.2}$M$_\odot$ Star-Forming Main Sequence (SFMS) galaxies observed so far as part of the MUSE Atlas of Disks (MAD). Specifically, we use all strong emission lines in the MUSE wavelength range 4650-9300 \AA\ to investigate the resolved ionized gas properties on $\sim$100 pc scales. This spatial resolution enables us to disentangle HII regions from the Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) in the computation of gas metallicities and Star Formation Rates (SFRs) of star forming regions. The gas metallicities generally decrease with radius. The metallicity of the HII regions is on average $\sim$0.1 dex higher than that of the DIG, but the metallicity radial gradient in both components is similar. The mean metallicities within the inner galaxy cores correlate with the total stellar mass of the galaxies. On our <100 pc scales, we find two correlations previously reported at kpc scales: a spatially resolved Mass-Metallicity Relation (RMZR) and a spatially resolved SFMS (RSFMS). We find no secondary dependency of the RMZR with the SFR density. We find that both resolved relations have a local origin, as they do not depend on the total stellar mass. We present adaptive optics (AO) assisted integral-field spectroscopy of the intermediate-age star cluster NGC 419 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. By investigating the cluster dynamics and the rotation properties of main sequence turn-off stars (MSTO), we demonstrate the power of AO-fed MUSE observations for this class of objects. Based on 1 049 radial velocity measurements, we determine a dynamical cluster mass of 1.4+/-0.2x10^5 M_sun and a dynamical mass-to-light ratio of 0.67+/-0.08, marginally higher than simple stellar population predictions for a Kroupa initial mass function. A stacking analysis of spectra at both sides of the extended MSTO reveals significant rotational broadening. Our analysis further provides tentative evidence that red MSTO stars rotate faster than their blue counterparts. We find average V sin i values of 87+/-16 km/s and 130+/-22 km/s for blue and red MSTO stars, respectively. Potential systematic effects due to the low spectral resolution of MUSE can reach 30 km/s but the difference in V sin i between the populations is unlikely to be affected., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) are unusual galaxies with low luminosities, similar to classical dwarf galaxies, but sizes up to $\sim\!5$ larger than expected for their mass. Some UDGs have large populations of globular clusters (GCs), something unexpected in galaxies with such low stellar density and mass. We have carried out a comprehensive study of GCs in both UDGs and classical dwarf galaxies at comparable stellar masses using HST observations of the Coma cluster. We present new imaging for 33 Dragonfly UDGs with the largest effective radii ($>2$ kpc), and additionally include 15 UDGs and 54 classical dwarf galaxies from the HST/ACS Coma Treasury Survey and the literature. Out of a total of 48 UDGs, 27 have statistically significant GC systems, and 11 have candidate nuclear star clusters. The GC specific frequency ($S_N$) varies dramatically, with the mean $S_N$ being higher for UDGs than for classical dwarfs. At constant stellar mass, galaxies with larger sizes (or lower surface brightnesses) have higher $S_N$, with the trend being stronger at higher stellar mass. At lower stellar masses, UDGs tend to have higher $S_N$ when closer to the center of the cluster, i.e., in denser environments. The fraction of UDGs with a nuclear star cluster also depends on environment, varying from $\sim\!40$\% in the cluster core, where it is slightly lower than the nucleation fraction of classical dwarfs, to $\lesssim20\%$ in the outskirts. The origin of ultracompact dwarfs (UCDs), a class of compact stellar systems discovered two decades ago, still remains a matter of debate. Recent discoveries of central supermassive black holes in UCDs likely inherited from their massive progenitor galaxies provide support for the tidal stripping hypothesis. At the same time, on statistical grounds, some massive UCDs might be representatives of the high luminosity tail of the globular cluster luminosity function. Here we present a detection of a $3.3^{+1.4}_{-1.2}\times10^6\,M_{\odot}$ black hole ($1\sigma$ uncertainty) in the centre of the UCD3 galaxy in the Fornax cluster, that corresponds to 4 per cent of its stellar mass. We performed isotropic Jeans dynamical modelling of UCD3 using internal kinematics derived from adaptive optics assisted observations with the SINFONI spectrograph and seeing limited data collected with the FLAMES spectrograph at the ESO VLT. We rule out the zero black hole mass at the $3\sigma$ confidence level when adopting a mass-to-light ratio inferred from stellar populations. This is the fourth supermassive black hole found in a UCD and the first one in the Fornax cluster. Similarly to other known UCDs that harbour black holes, UCD3 hosts metal rich stars enhanced in $\alpha$-elements that supports the tidal stripping of a massive progenitor as its likely formation scenario. We estimate that up to 80 per cent of luminous UCDs in galaxy clusters host central black holes. We examine the internal properties of the most massive ultracompact dwarf galaxy (UCD), M59-UCD3, by combining adaptive optics assisted near-IR integral field spectroscopy from Gemini/NIFS, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. We use the multi-band HST imaging to create a mass model that suggests and accounts for the presence of multiple stellar populations and structural components. We combine these mass models with kinematics measurements from Gemini/NIFS to find a best-fit stellar mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$) and black hole (BH) mass using Jeans Anisotropic Models (JAM), axisymmetric Schwarzschild models, and triaxial Schwarzschild models. The best fit parameters in the JAM and axisymmetric Schwarzschild models have black holes between 2.5 and 5.9 million solar masses. The triaxial Schwarzschild models point toward a similar BH mass, but show a minimum $\chi^2$ at a BH mass of $\sim 0$. Models with a BH in all three techniques provide better fits to the central $V_{rms}$ profiles, and thus we estimate the BH mass to be $4.2^{+2.1}_{-1.7} \times 10^{6}$ M$_\odot$ (estimated 1$\sigma$ uncertainties). We also present deep radio imaging of M59-UCD3 and two other UCDs in Virgo with dynamical BH mass measurements, and compare these to X-ray measurements to check for consistency with the fundamental plane of BH accretion. We detect faint radio emission in M59cO, but find only upper limits for M60-UCD1 and M59-UCD3 despite X-ray detections in both these sources. The BH mass and nuclear light profile of M59-UCD3 suggests it is the tidally stripped remnant of a $\sim$10$^{9-10}$ M$_\odot$ galaxy., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables

The recent discovery of massive black holes (BHs) in the centers of high-mass ultra compact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) suggests that at least some are the stripped nuclear star clusters of dwarf galaxies. We present the first study that investigates whether such massive BHs, and therefore stripped nuclei, also exist in low-mass ($M<10^{7}M_{\odot}$) UCDs. We constrain the BH masses of two UCDs located in Centaurus A (UCD320 and UCD330) using Jeans modeling of the resolved stellar kinematics from adaptive optics VLT/SINFONI data. No massive BHs are found in either UCD. We find a $3\,\sigma$ upper limit on the central BH mass in UCD\,330 of $M_{\bullet}<1.0\times10^{5}M_{\odot}$, which corresponds to 1.7\% of the total mass. This excludes a high mass fraction BH and would only allow a low-mass BHs similar to those claimed to be detected in Local Group GCs. For UCD320, poorer data quality results in a less constraining $3\,\sigma$ upper limit of $M_{\bullet}<1\times10^{6}M_{\odot}$, which is equal to 37.7\% of the total mass. The dynamical $M/L$ of UCD320 and UCD330 are not inflated compared to predictions from stellar population models. The non-detection of BHs in these low-mass UCDs is consistent with the idea that elevated dynamical $M/L$s do indicate the presence of a substantial BH. Despite not detecting massive BHs, these systems could still be stripped nuclei. The strong rotation ($v/\sigma$ of 0.3 to 0.4) in both UCDs and the two-component light profile in UCD330 support the idea that these UCDs may be stripped nuclei of low-mass galaxies where the BH occupation fraction is not yet known., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ, 21 pages, 10 Figures

We present the stellar velocity maps of 25 massive early type galaxies located in dense environments observed with MUSE. Galaxies are selected to be brighter than M_K=-25.7 magnitude, reside in the core of the Shapley Super Cluster or be the brightest galaxy in clusters richer than the Virgo Cluster. We thus targeted galaxies more massive than 10^12 Msun and larger than 10 kpc (half-light radius). The velocity maps show a large variety of kinematic features: oblate-like regular rotation, kinematically distinct cores and various types of non-regular rotation. The kinematic misalignment angles show that massive galaxies can be divided into two categories: those with small or negligible misalignment, and those with misalignment consistent with being 90 degrees. Galaxies in this latter group, comprising just under half of our galaxies, have prolate-like rotation (rotation around the major axis). Among the brightest cluster galaxies the incidence of prolate-like rotation is 50 per cent, while for a magnitude limited sub-sample of objects within the Shapley Super Cluster (mostly satellites), 35 per cent of galaxies show prolate-like rotation. Placing our galaxies on the mass - size diagram, we show that they all fall on a branch extending almost an order of magnitude in mass and a factor of 5 in size from the massive end early-type galaxies, previously recognised as associated with major dissipation-less mergers. The presence of galaxies with complex kinematics and, particularly, prolate-like rotators suggests, according to current numerical simulations, that the most massive galaxies grow predominantly through dissipation-less equal-mass mergers., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted to MNRAS

We present spatially resolved stellar kinematic maps, for the first time, for a sample of 17 intermediate redshift galaxies (0.2 < z < 0.8). We used deep MUSE/VLT integral field spectroscopic observations in the Hubble Deep Field South (HDFS) and Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF), resulting from ~30h integration time per field, each covering 1'x1' field of view, with ~0.65" spatial resolution. We selected all galaxies brighter than 25mag in the I band and for which the stellar continuum is detected over an area that is at least two times larger than the spatial resolution. The resulting sample contains mostly late-type disk, main-sequence star-forming galaxies with 10^8.5 - 10^10.5 Msun. Using a full-spectrum fitting technique, we derive two-dimensional maps of the stellar and gas kinematics, including the radial velocity V and velocity dispersion sigma. We find that most galaxies in the sample are consistent with having rotating stellar disks with roughly constant velocity dispersions and that the Vrms=sqrt{V^2+sigma^2} of the gas and stars, a scaling proxy for the galaxy gravitational potential, compare well to each other. These spatially resolved observations of intermediate redshift galaxies suggest that the regular stellar kinematics of disk galaxies that is observed in the local Universe was already in place 4 - 7 Gyr ago and that their gas kinematics traces the gravitational potential of the galaxy, thus is not dominated by shocks and turbulent motions. Finally, we build dynamical axisymmetric Jeans models constrained by the derived stellar kinematics for two specific galaxies and derive their dynamical masses. These are in good agreement (within 25%) with those derived from simple exponential disk models based on the gas kinematics. This is the first of a series of papers presenting the results from our survey of 25 Galactic globular clusters with the MUSE integral-field spectrograph. In combination with our dedicated algorithm for source deblending, MUSE provides unique multiplex capabilities in crowded stellar fields and allows us to acquire samples of up to 20 000 stars within the half-light radius of each cluster. The present paper focuses on the analysis of the internal dynamics of 22 out of the 25 clusters, using about 500 000 spectra of 200 000 individual stars. Thanks to the large stellar samples per cluster, we are able to perform a detailed analysis of the central rotation and dispersion fields using both radial profiles and two-dimensional maps. The velocity dispersion profiles we derive show a good general agreement with existing radial velocity studies but typically reach closer to the cluster centres. By comparison with proper motion data we derive or update the dynamical distance estimates to 14 clusters. Compared to previous dynamical distance estimates for 47 Tuc, our value is in much better agreement with other methods. We further find significant (>3sigma) rotation in the majority (13/22) of our clusters. Our analysis seems to confirm earlier findings of a link between rotation and the ellipticities of globular clusters. We present dynamical measurements of the central mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$) of a sample of 27 low-mass early-type ATLAS$^{3D}$ galaxies. We consider all ATLAS$^{3D}$ galaxies with 9.7$<$log(M$_\star/$M$_\odot)$$<$10.5 in our analysis, selecting out galaxies with available high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data, and eliminating galaxies with significant central color gradients or obvious dust features. We use the HST images to derive mass models for these galaxies and combine these with the central velocity dispersion values from ATLAS$^{3D}$ data to obtain a central dynamical $M/L$ estimate. These central dynamical $M/L$s are higher than dynamical $M/L$s derived at larger radii and stellar population estimates of the galaxy centers in $\sim$80\% of galaxies, with a median enhancement of $\sim$14\% and a statistical significance of 3.3$\sigma$. We show that the enhancement in the central $M/L$ is best described either by the presence of black holes in these galaxies or by radial IMF variations. Assuming a black hole model, we derive black hole masses for the sample of galaxies. In two galaxies, NGC 4458 and NGC 4660, the data suggests significantly over-massive BHs, while in most others only upper limits are obtained. We also show that the level of $M/L$ enhancements we see in these early-type galaxy nuclei are consistent with the larger enhancements seen in ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs), supporting the scenario where massive UCDs are created by stripping galaxies of these masses., Comment: Accepted to ApJ, 17 pages, 13 figures

Early-type dwarf galaxies are not simply featureless, old objects, but were found to be much more diverse, hosting substructures and a variety of stellar population properties. To explore the stellar content of faint early-type galaxies, and to investigate in particular those with recent central star formation, we study colours and colour gradients within one effective radius in optical (g-r) and near-infrared (i-H) bands for 120 Virgo cluster early types with -19 mag < $M_{r}$ < -16 mag. Twelve galaxies turn out to have blue cores, when defined as g-r colour gradients larger than 0.10 mag/$R_{\rm eff}$, which represents the positive tail of the gradient distribution. For these galaxies, we find that they have the strongest age gradients, and that even outside the blue core, their mean stellar population is younger than the mean of ordinary faint early types. The metallicity gradients of these blue-cored early-type dwarf galaxies are, however, in the range of most normal faint early types, which we find to have non-zero gradients with higher central metallicity. The blue central regions are consistent with star formation activity within the last few 100 Myr. We discuss that these galaxies could be explained by environmental quenching of star formation in the outer galaxy regions, while the inner star formation activity has continued.

We present the detection of supermassive black holes (BHs) in two Virgo ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs), VUCD3 and M59cO. We use adaptive optics assisted data from the Gemini/NIFS instrument to derive radial velocity dispersion profiles for both objects. Mass models for the two UCDs are created using multi-band Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging, including the modeling of mild color gradients seen in both objects. We then find a best-fit stellar mass-to-light ratio ($M/L$) and BH mass by combining the kinematic data and the deprojected stellar mass profile using Jeans Anisotropic Models (JAM). Assuming axisymmetric isotropic Jeans models, we detect BHs in both objects with masses of $4.4^{+2.5}_{-3.0} \times 10^6$ $M_{\odot}$ in VUCD3 and $5.8^{+2.5}_{-2.8} \times 10^6$ $M_{\odot}$ in M59cO (3$\sigma$ uncertainties). The BH mass is degenerate with the anisotropy parameter, $\beta_z$; for the data to be consistent with no BH requires $\beta_z = 0.4$ and $\beta_z = 0.6$ for VUCD3 and M59cO, respectively. Comparing these values with nuclear star clusters shows that while it is possible that these UCDs are highly radially anisotropic, it seems unlikely. These detections constitute the second and third UCDs known to host supermassive BHs. They both have a high fraction of their total mass in their BH; $\sim$13% for VUCD3 and $\sim$18% for M59cO. They also have low best-fit stellar $M/L$s, supporting the proposed scenario that most massive UCDs host high mass fraction BHs. We explore the nucleus of the nearby 10$^9M_{\odot}$~early-type galaxy (ETGs), NGC~404, using Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/STIS spectroscopy and WFC3 imaging. We first present evidence for nuclear variability in UV, optical, and infrared filters over a time period of 15~years. This variability adds to the already substantial evidence for an accreting black hole at the center of NGC~404. We then redetermine the dynamical black hole mass in NGC~404 including modeling of the nuclear stellar populations. We combine HST/STIS spectroscopy with WFC3 images to create a local color-$M/L$~relation derived from stellar population modeling of the STIS data. We then use this to create a mass model for the nuclear region. We use Jeans modeling to fit this mass model to adaptive optics (AO) stellar kinematic observations from Gemini/NIFS. From our stellar dynamical modeling, we find a 3$\sigma$ upper limit on the black hole mass of $1.5\times10^5M_{\odot}$. Given the accretion evidence for a black hole, this upper limit makes NGC~404 the lowest mass central black hole with dynamical mass constraints. We find that the kinematics of H$_2$ emission line gas show evidence for non-gravitational motions preventing the use of gas dynamical modeling to constrain the black hole mass. NGC 4395 is a bulgeless spiral galaxy, harboring one of the nearest known type 1 Seyfert nuclei. Although there is no consensus on the mass of its central engine, several estimates suggest it to be one of the lightest massive black holes (MBHs) known. We present the first direct dynamical measurement of the mass of this MBH from a combination of two-dimensional gas kinematic data, obtained with the adaptive optics assisted near infrared integral field spectrograph Gemini/NIFS, and high-resolution multiband photometric data from Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 (HST/WFC3). We use the photometric data to model the shape and stellar mass-to-light ratio (M/L) of the nuclear star cluster. From the Gemini/NIFS observations, we derive the kinematics of warm molecular hydrogen gas as traced by emission through the H$_2$ 1--0 S(1) transition. These kinematics show a clear rotational signal, with a position angle orthogonal to NGC 4395's radio jet. Our best fitting tilted ring models of the kinematics of the molecular hydrogen gas contain a black hole with mass $M=4_{-3}^{+8}\times 10^5$ M$_\odot$ (3$\sigma$ uncertainties) embedded in a nuclear star cluster of mass $M=2 \times 10^6$ M$_\odot$. Our black hole mass measurement is in excellent agreement with the reverberation mapping mass estimate of Peterson et al. We obtained Hubble Space Telescope/Wide Field Camera 3 imaging of a sample of ten of the nearest and brightest nuclear clusters residing in late-type spiral galaxies, in seven bands that span the near-ultraviolet to the near-infrared. Structural properties of the clusters were measured by fitting two-dimensional surface brightness profiles to the images using GALFIT. The clusters exhibit a wide range of structural properties. For six of the ten clusters in our sample, we find changes in the effective radius with wavelength, suggesting radially varying stellar populations. In four of the objects, the effective radius increases with wavelength, indicating the presence of a younger population which is more concentrated than the bulk of the stars in the cluster. However, we find a general decrease in effective radius with wavelength in two of the objects in our sample, which may indicate extended, circumnuclear star formation. We also find a general trend of increasing roundness of the clusters at longer wavelengths, as well as a correlation between the axis ratios of the NCs and their host galaxies. These observations indicate that blue disks aligned with the host galaxy plane are a common feature of nuclear clusters in late-type galaxies, but are difficult to detect in galaxies that are close to face-on. In color-color diagrams spanning the near-UV through the near-IR, most of the clusters lie far from single-burst evolutionary tracks, showing evidence for multi-age populations. Most of the clusters have integrated colors consistent with a mix of an old population (> 1 Gyr) and a young population (~100-300 Myr). We present scaling relations between structural properties of nuclear star clusters and their host galaxies for a sample of early-type dwarf galaxies observed as part of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Coma Cluster Survey. We have analysed the light profiles of 200 early-type dwarf galaxies in the magnitude range $16.0 < m_{F814W} < 22.6 $ mag, corresponding to $-19.0 < M_{F814W} < -12.4 $ mag. Nuclear star clusters are detected in 80% of the galaxies, thus doubling the sample of HST-observed early-type dwarf galaxies with nuclear star clusters. \changed{We confirm that the} nuclear star cluster detection fraction decreases strongly toward faint magnitudes. The luminosities of nuclear star clusters do not scale linearly with host galaxy luminosity. A linear fit yields L$_{nuc} \sim $L$_{gal}^{0.57\pm0.05}$. The nuclear star cluster-host galaxy luminosity scaling relation for low-mass early-type dwarf galaxies is consistent with formation by globular cluster accretion. We find that at similar luminosities, galaxies with higher S\'ersic indices have slightly more luminous nuclear star clusters. Rounder galaxies have on average more luminous clusters. Some of the nuclear star clusters are resolved, despite the distance of Coma. We argue that the relation between nuclear star cluster mass and size is consistent with both formation by globular cluster accretion and in situ formation. Our data are consistent with GC inspiraling being the dominant mechanism at low masses, although the observed trend with S\'ersic index suggests that in situ star formation is an important second order effect., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Ultracompact dwarf galaxies (UCDs) are among the densest stellar systems in the universe. These systems have masses up to 200 million solar masses, but half light radii of just 3-50 parsecs. Dynamical mass estimates show that many UCDs are more massive than expected from their luminosity. It remains unclear whether these high dynamical mass estimates are due to the presence of supermassive black holes or result from a non-standard stellar initial mass function that causes the average stellar mass to be higher than expected. Here we present the detection of a supermassive black hole in a massive UCD. Adaptive optics kinematic data of M60-UCD1 show a central velocity dispersion peak above 100 km/s and modest rotation. Dynamical modeling of these data reveals the presence of a supermassive black hole with mass of 21 million solar masses. This is 15% of the object's total mass. The high black hole mass and mass fraction suggest that M60-UCD1 is the stripped nucleus of a galaxy. Our analysis also shows that M60-UCD1's stellar mass is consistent with its luminosity, implying many other UCDs may also host supermassive black holes. We investigate the structure and nuclear region of the black hole (BH) hosting galaxy Henize2-10. Surface brightness (SB) profiles are analyzed using Magellan/Megacam $g$- and $r$-band images. Excluding the central starburst, we find a best-fit two component S\'ersic profile with $n_{\rm in} \sim 0.6$, $r_{\text{eff,in}} \sim$ 260~pc, and $n_{\rm out}\sim 1.8$, $r_{\text{eff, out}}\sim$ 1 kpc. Integrating out to our outer most data point (100 arc sec $\sim$ 4.3 kpc), we calculate $M_g=-19.2$ and $M_r=-19.8$. The corresponding enclosed stellar mass is $M_{\star}\sim(10\pm3)\times10^9$ M$_\odot$, $\sim3\times$ larger than previous estimates. Apart from the central $\lesssim$500 pc, with blue colors and an irregular morphology, the galaxy appears to be an early-type system. The outer color is quite red, $(g-r)_0=0.75$, suggesting a dominant old population. We study the nuclear region of the galaxy using archival Gemini/NIFS $K$-band adaptive optics spectroscopy and {\it Hubble Space Telescope} imaging. We place an upper limit on the BH mass of $\sim10^7M_{\odot}$ from the NIFS data, consistent with that from the $M_{\rm BH}$-radio-X-ray fundamental plane. No coronal lines are seen, but a Br$\gamma$ source is located at the position of the BH with a luminosity consistent with the X-ray emission. The starburst at the center of Henize 2-10 has led to the formation of several super star clusters, which are within $\sim$100 pc of the BH. We examine the fate of the nucleus by estimating the dynamical masses and dynamical friction timescales of the clusters. The most massive clusters ($\sim 10^6 M_\odot$) have $\tau_{\rm dyn} \lesssim 200$ Myr, and thus Henize 2-10 may represent a rare snapshot of nuclear star cluster formation around a pre-existing massive BH., Comment: 15 pages, 9 figures, ApJ accepted

We analyze line-of-sight velocity and proper motion data of stars in the Galactic globular cluster M15 using a new method to fit dynamical models to discrete kinematic data. Our fitting method maximizes the likelihood for individual stars and, as such, does not suffer the same loss of spatial and velocity information incurred when spatially binning data or measuring velocity moments. In this paper, we show that the radial variation in M15 of the mass-to-light ratio is consistent with previous estimates and theoretical predictions, which verifies our method. Our best-fitting axisymmetric Jeans models do include a central dark mass of $\sim2 \pm 1\cdot 10^3M_\odot$, which can be explained by a high concentration of stellar remnants at the cluster center. This paper shows that, from a technical point of view and with current computing power, spatial binning of data is no longer necessary. This not only leads to more accurate fits, but also avoids biased mass estimates due to the loss of resolution. Furthermore, we find that the mass concentration in M15 is significantly higher than previously measured, and is in close agreement with theoretical predictions for core-collapsed globular clusters without a central intermediate-mass black hole., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS; 8 pages, 7 figures

We constrain the assembly history of galaxies in the projected central 0.5 Mpc of the Coma cluster by performing structural decomposition on 69 massive (M_star >= 10^9 M_sun) galaxies using high-resolution F814W images from the HST Treasury Survey of Coma. Each galaxy is modeled with up to three Sersic components having a free Sersic index n. After excluding the two cDs in the projected central 0.5 Mpc of Coma, 57% of the galactic stellar mass in the projected central 0.5 Mpc of Coma resides in classical bulges/ellipticals while 43% resides in cold disk-dominated structures. Most of the stellar mass in Coma may have been assembled through major (and possibly minor) mergers. Hubble types are assigned based on the decompositions, and we find a strong morphology-density relation; the ratio of (E+S0):spirals is (91.0%):9.0%. In agreement with earlier work, the size of outer disks in Coma S0s/spirals is smaller compared with lower-density environments captured with SDSS (Data Release 2). Among similar-mass clusters from a hierarchical semi-analytic model, no single cluster can simultaneously match all the global properties of the Coma cluster. The model strongly overpredicts the mass of cold gas and underpredicts the mean fraction of stellar mass locked in hot components over a wide range of galaxy masses. We suggest that these disagreements with the model result from missing cluster physics (e.g., ram-pressure stripping), and certain bulge assembly modes (e.g., mergers of clumps). We present a new framework for modelling discrete kinematic data. Current techniques typically involve binning. Our approach works directly with the discrete data and uses maximum-likelihood methods to assess the probability of the dataset given model predictions. We avoid making hard cuts on the datasets by allowing for a contaminating population in our models. We apply our models to discrete proper-motion and line-of-sight-velocity data of Galactic globular cluster omega Centauri and find a mildly radial velocity anisotropy beta = 0.10 +/- 0.02, an inclination angle i = 50 +/- 1 deg, a V-band mass-to-light ratio Upsilon = 2.71 +/- 0.05 Msun/Lsun and a distance d = 4.59 +/- 0.08 kpc. All parameters are in agreement with previous studies, demonstrating the feasibility of our methods. We find that the models return lower distances and higher mass-to-light ratios than expected when we include proper motion stars with high errors or for which there is some blending. We examine the alignment between H_2O megamaser disks on sub-pc scales with circumnuclear disks and bars on <500 pc scales observed with HST/WFC3. The HST imaging reveals young stars, indicating the presence of gas. The megamaser disks are not well aligned with the circumnuclear bars or disks as traced by stars in the HST images. We speculate on the implications of the observed misalignments for fueling supermassive black holes in gas-rich spiral galaxies. In contrast, we find a strong preference for the rotation axes of the megamaser disks to align with radio continuum jets observed on >50 pc scales, in those galaxies for which radio continuum detections are available. (ABRIDGED) We use high resolution (~0.1") F814W ACS images from the HST ACS Treasury survey of the Coma cluster at z~0.02 to study bars in massive disk galaxies (S0s), and in dwarf galaxies in the Coma core. Our study helps constrain the evolution of bars and disks in dense environments and provides a comparison point for studies in lower density environments and at higher redshifts. (1) We characterize the fraction and properties of bars in a sample of 32 bright (M_V <= -18, M_* > 10^9.5 M_sun) S0 galaxies, which dominate the population of massive disk galaxies in the Coma core. Measuring the S0 bar fraction must be handled carefully, as the results depend on the method used: the bar fraction for bright S0s in the Coma core is 50%+/-11%, 65%+/-11%, and 60%+/-11% for three methods of bar detection: strict ellipse fit criteria, relaxed ellipse fit criteria, and visual classification. (2) We compare the S0 bar fraction across different environments (Coma core, A901/902, Virgo). We find that the bar fraction among bright S0 galaxies does not show a statistically significant variation across environments spanning two orders of magnitude in galaxy number density (n~300-10,000 gal/Mpc^3). We speculate that the S0 bar fraction is not significantly enhanced in rich clusters because S0s in rich clusters are less prone to bar instabilities as they are dynamically hot and gas poor due to ram pressure stripping and accelerated star formation. In addition, high-speed encounters in rich clusters may be less effective than slow, strong encounters in inducing bars. (3) We analyze a sample of 333 faint (M_V > -18) dwarf galaxies in the Coma core. Using unsharp-masking, we find only 13 galaxies with bar and/or spiral structure. We present a catalogue of structural parameters for 8814 galaxies in the 25 fields of the HST/ACS Coma Treasury Survey. Parameters from S\'ersic fits to the two-dimensional surface brightness distributions are given for all galaxies from our published Coma photometric catalogue with mean effective surface brightness brighter than 26.0 mag/sq. arcsec and brighter than 24.5 mag (equivalent to absolute magnitude - 10.5), as given by the fits, all in F814W(AB). The sample comprises a mixture of Coma members and background objects; 424 galaxies have redshifts and of these 163 are confirmed members. The fits were carried out using both the Gim2D and Galfit codes. We provide the following parameters: Galaxy ID, RA, DEC, the total corrected automatic magnitude from the photometric catalogue, the total magnitude of the model (F814W_AB), the geometric mean effective radius Re, the mean surface brightness within the effective radius <{\mu}>_e, the S\'ersic index n, the ellipticity and the source position angle. The selection limits of the catalogue and the errors listed for the S\'ersic parameters come from extensive simulations of the fitting process using synthetic galaxy models. The agreement between Gim2D and Galfit parameters is sensitive to details of the fitting procedure; for the settings employed here the agreement is excellent over the range of parameters covered in the catalogue. We define and present two goodness-of-fit indices which quantify the degree to which the image can be approximated by a S\'ersic model with concentric, coaxial elliptical isophotes; such indices may be used to objectively select galaxies with more complex structures such as bulge-disk, bars or nuclear components. The Coma cluster was the target of a HST-ACS Treasury program designed for deep imaging in the F475W and F814W passbands. Although our survey was interrupted by the ACS instrument failure in 2007, the partially completed survey still covers ~50% of the core high-density region in Coma. Observations were performed for 25 fields that extend over a wide range of cluster-centric radii (~1.75 Mpc) with a total coverage area of 274 arcmin^2. The majority of the fields are located near the core region of Coma (19/25 pointings) with six additional fields in the south-west region of the cluster. In this paper we present reprocessed images and SExtractor source catalogs for our survey fields, including a detailed description of the methodology used for object detection and photometry, the subtraction of bright galaxies to measure faint underlying objects, and the use of simulations to assess the photometric accuracy and completeness of our catalogs. We also use simulations to perform aperture corrections for the SExtractor Kron magnitudes based only on the measured source flux and half-light radius. We have performed photometry for ~73,000 unique objects; one-half of our detections are brighter than the 10-sigma point-source detection limit at F814W=25.8 mag (AB). The slight majority of objects (60%) are unresolved or only marginally resolved by ACS. We estimate that Coma members are 5-10% of all source detections, which consist of a large population of unresolved objects (primarily GCs but also UCDs) and a wide variety of extended galaxies from a cD galaxy to dwarf LSB galaxies. We use ACS data from the HST Treasury survey of the Coma cluster (z~0.02) to study the properties of barred galaxies in the Coma core, the densest environment in the nearby Universe. This study provides a complementary data point for studies of barred galaxies as a function of redshift and environment. From ~470 cluster members brighter than M_I = -11 mag, we select a sample of 46 disk galaxies (S0--Im) based on visual classification. The sample is dominated by S0s for which we find an optical bar fraction of 47+/-11% through ellipse fitting and visual inspection. Among the bars in the core of the Coma cluster, we do not find any very large (a_bar > 2 kpc) bars. Comparison to other studies reveals that while the optical bar fraction for S0s shows only a modest variation across low-to-intermediate density environments (field to intermediate-density clusters), it can be higher by up to a factor of ~2 in the very high-density environment of the rich Coma cluster core., Comment: Proceedings of the Bash symposium, to appear in the Astronomical Society of the Pacific Conference Series, eds.
