The Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus) is the most important star-forming complex in the Local Group, offering a microscope on starburst astrophysics. At its heart lies the exceptionally rich young stellar cluster R136, containing the most massive stars known. Stellar winds and supernovae have carved 30 Dor into an amazing display of arcs, pillars, and bubbles. We present first results and advanced data processing products from the 2-Ms Chandra X-ray Visionary Project, "The Tarantula - Revealed by X-rays" (T-ReX). The 3615 point sources in the T-ReX catalog include massive stars, compact objects, binaries, bright pre-main-sequence stars and compact young stellar (sub)clusters in 30 Dor. After removing point sources and excluding the exceptionally bright supernova remnant N157B (30 Dor B), the global diffuse X-ray maps reveal hot plasma structures resolved at 1-10 pc scales, with an absorption-corrected total-band (0.5-7 keV) X-ray luminosity of $2.110\times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Spatially-resolved spectral modeling provides evidence for emission lines enhanced by charge-exchange processes at the interfaces. We identify a candidate for the oldest X-ray pulsar detected to date in 30 Dor, PSR J0538-6902, inside a newly-resolved arctuate X-ray wind nebula, the Manta Ray. The long time baseline of T-ReX monitored dozens of massive stars, several showing periodic variability tied to binary orbital periods, and captured strong flares from at least three low-mass Galactic foreground stars., Comment: 48 pages, 19 figures, accepted for publication in ApJS

Based on our Chandra imaging-spectroscopic observations, we present the latest evolution of the X-ray remnant of SN 1987A. Recent changes in the electron temperatures and volume emission measures suggest that the blast wave in SN 1987A is moving out of the dense inner ring structure, also called the equatorial ring (ER). The 0.5-2.0 keV X-ray light curve shows a linearly declining trend (by $\sim$4.5 % yr$^{-1}$) between 2016 and 2020, as the blast wave heats the hitherto unknown circumstellar medium (CSM) outside the ER. While the peak X-ray emission in the latest 0.3-8.0 keV image is still within the ER, the radial expansion rate in the 3.0-8.0 keV images suggests an increasing contribution of the X-ray emission from less dense CSM since 2012, at least partly from beyond the ER. It is remarkable that, since 2020, the declining soft X-ray flux has stabilized around $\sim$7 $\times$ 10$^{-12}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, which may signal a contribution from the reverse-shocked outer layers of ejecta as predicted by the 3-D magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) models. In the latest ACIS spectrum of supernova remnant (SNR) 1987A in 2022 we report a significant detection of the Fe K line at $\sim$6.7 keV, which may be due to changing thermal conditions of the X-ray emitting CSM and/or the onset of reverse shock interactions with the Fe-ejecta., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, resubmitted to ApJ after addressing referee's comments

We reassess the historical $L_{X}/L_{Bol}$ relation for early-type stars from a comparison between T-ReX, the Chandra ACIS X-ray survey of the Tarantula Nebula in the LMC, and contemporary spectroscopic analysis of massive stars obtained primarily from VLT/FLAMES, VLT/MUSE and HST/STIS surveys. For 107 sources in common (some host to multiple stars), the majority of which are bolometrically luminous (40% exceed $10^6 L_{\odot}$), we find an average $\log L_{X} /L_{Bol} = -6.90 \pm 0.65$. Excluding extreme systems Mk 34 (WN5h+WN5h), R140a (WC4+WN6+) and VFTS 399 (O9 IIIn+?), plus four WR sources with anomalously hard X-ray components (R130, R134, R135, Mk 53) and 10 multiple sources within the spatially crowded core of R136a, $\log L_{X}/L_{Bol} = -7.00 \pm 0.49$, in good agreement with Galactic OB stars. No difference is found between single and binary systems, nor between O, Of/WN and WR stars, although there does appear to be a trend towards harder X-ray emission from O dwarfs, through O (super)giants, Of/WN stars and WR stars. The majority of known OB stars in the Tarantula are not detected in the T-ReX point source catalogue, so we have derived upper limits for all undetected OB stars for which log $L_{Bol}/L_{\odot} \geq 5.0$. A survival analysis using detected and upper-limit log $L_{X}/L_{Bol}$ values indicates no significant difference between luminous O stars in the LMC and the Carina Nebula. This analysis suggests that metallicity does not strongly influence $L_{X}/L_{Bol}$. We present [CII] 158 $\mu$m and [OI] 63 $\mu$m observations of the bipolar HII region RCW 36 in the Vela C molecular cloud, obtained within the SOFIA legacy project FEEDBACK, which is complemented with APEX $^{12/13}$CO(3-2) and Chandra X-ray (0.5-7 keV) data. This shows that the molecular ring, forming the waist of the bipolar nebula, expands with a velocity of 1 - 1.9 km s$^{-1}$. We also observe an increased linewidth in the ring indicating that turbulence is driven by energy injection from the stellar feedback. The bipolar cavity hosts blue-shifted expanding [CII] shells at 5.2$\pm$0.5$\pm$0.5 km s$^{-1}$ (statistical and systematic uncertainty) which indicates that expansion out of the dense gas happens non-uniformly and that the observed bipolar phase might be relatively short ($\sim$0.2 Myr). The X-ray observations show diffuse emission that traces a hot plasma, created by stellar winds, in and around RCW 36. At least 50 \% of the stellar wind energy is missing in RCW 36. This is likely due to leakage which is clearing even larger cavities around the bipolar RCW 36 region. Lastly, the cavities host high-velocity wings in [CII] which indicates relatively high mass ejection rates ($\sim$5$\times$10$^{-4}$ M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). This could be driven by stellar winds and/or radiation pressure, but remains difficult to constrain. This local mass ejection, which can remove all mass within 1 pc of RCW 36 in 1-2 Myr, and the large-scale clearing of ambient gas in the Vela C cloud indicates that stellar feedback plays a significant role in suppressing the star formation efficiency (SFE)., Comment: 38 pages, 27 figures, 8 tables, accepted in ApJ

The dynamical states of molecular clouds may affect the properties of the stars they form. In the vicinity of the Trifid Nebula ($d=1180\pm25$ pc), the main star cluster (Trifid Main) lies within an expanding section of the molecular cloud; however, ~0.3 deg to the north (Trifid North), the cloud's velocity structure is more tranquil. We acquired a Chandra X-ray observation to identify pre-main-sequence stars in Trifid North, complementing a previous observation of Trifid Main. In Trifid North, we identified 51 candidate pre-main-sequence stars, of which 13 are high-confidence Trifid members based on Gaia EDR3 parallaxes and proper motions. We also re-analyzed membership of Trifid Main and separated out multiple background stellar associations. Trifid North represents a stellar population ~10% as rich as Trifid Main that formed in a separate part of the cloud. The 1D stellar velocity dispersion in Trifid North ($0.6\pm0.2$ km/s) is three times lower than in Trifid Main ($1.9\pm0.2$ km/s). Furthermore, in Trifid Main, proper motions indicate that the portion of the star cluster superimposed on the optical nebula is expanding. Expansion of the HII region around the O-star HD 164492A, and the resulting gas expulsion, can explain both the motions of the stars and gas in Trifid Main. Measuring the evolution of X-ray emission from pre-main sequence (PMS) stars gives insight into two issues: the response of magnetic dynamo processes to changes in interior structure and the effects of high-energy radiation on protoplanetary disks and primordial planetary atmospheres. We present a sample of 6,003 stars with ages 7-25Myr in ten nearby open clusters from Chandra X-ray and Gaia-EDR3 surveys. Combined with previous results in large samples of younger (<5Myr) stars in MYStIX and SFiNCs star forming regions, mass-stratified activity-age relations are derived for early phases of stellar evolution. X-ray luminosity (Lx) is constant during the first few Myr, possibly due to the presence of extended X-ray coronas insensitive to temporal changes in stellar size. Lx then decays during the 7-25Myr period, more rapidly as stellar mass increases. This decay is interpreted as decreasing efficiency of the alpha^2 dynamo as radiative cores grow and a solar-type alpha-Omega dynamo emerges. For more massive 3.5-7Mo fully radiative stars, the X-ray emission plummets indicating lack of an effective magnetic dynamo. The findings provide improved measurements of high energy radiation effects on circumstellar material, first the protoplanetary disk and then the atmospheres of young planets. The observed X-ray luminosities can be so high that an inner Earth-mass rocky, unmagnetized planet around a solar-mass PMS star might lose its primary and secondary atmospheres within a few-several million years. We present spectroscopic analysis of the luminous X-ray source Melnick 33Na (Mk 33Na, HSH95 16) in the LMC 30 Doradus region (Tarantula Nebula), utilising new time-series VLT/UVES spectroscopy. We confirm Mk 33Na as a double-lined O-type spectroscopic binary with a mass ratio $q = 0.63 \pm 0.02$, $e = 0.33 \pm 0.01$ and orbital period of $18.3 \pm 0.1$ days, supporting the favoured period from X-ray observations obtained via the Tarantula -- Revealed by X-rays (T-ReX) survey. Disentangled spectra of each component provide spectral types of OC2.5 If* and O4 V for the primary and secondary respectively - unusually for an O supergiant the primary exhibits strong CIV 4658 emission and weak NV 4603-20, justifying the OC classification. Spectroscopic analysis favours extreme physical properties for the primary ($T_{\rm eff} = 50$ kK, $\log L/L_{\odot} = 6.15$) with system components of $M_{1} = 83 \pm 19 M_{\odot}$ and $M_{2} = 48 \pm 11 M_{\odot}$ obtained from evolutionary models, which can be reconciled with results from our orbital analysis (e.g. $M_{1} \sin^3 i = 20.0 \pm 1.2 M_{\odot}$) if the system inclination is $\sim 38^{\circ}$ and it has an age of 0.9 to 1.6 Myr. This establishes Mk 33Na as one of the highest mass binary systems in the LMC, alongside other X-ray luminous early-type binaries Mk34 (WN5h+WN5h), R144 (WN5/6h+WN6/7h) and especially R139 (O6.5\,Iafc+O6\,Iaf)., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 16 pages and 14 figures plus supplementary material

Radiative and mechanical feedback of massive stars regulates star formation and galaxy evolution. Positive feedback triggers the creation of new stars by collecting dense shells of gas, while negative feedback disrupts star formation by shredding molecular clouds. Although key to understanding star formation, their relative importance is unknown. Here, we report velocity-resolved observations from the SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy) legacy program FEEDBACK of the massive star-forming region RCW 120 in the [CII] 1.9-THz fine-structure line, revealing a gas shell expanding at 15 km/s. Complementary APEX (Atacama Pathfinder Experiment) CO J=3-2 345-GHz observations exhibit a ring structure of molecular gas, fragmented into clumps that are actively forming stars. R 144 is the visually brightest WR star in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). R 144 was reported to be a binary, making it potentially the most massive binary thus observed. We perform a comprehensive spectral, photometric, orbital, and polarimetric analysis of R 144. R 144 is an eccentric (e=0.51) 74.2-d binary comprising two relatively evolved (age~2 Myr), H-rich WR stars. The hotter primary (WN5/6h, T=50 kK) and the cooler secondary (WN6/7h,T=45kK) have nearly equal masses. The combination of low rotation and H-depletion observed in the system is well reproduced by contemporary evolution models that include boosted mass-loss at the upper-mass end. The systemic velocity of R 144 and its relative isolation suggest that it was ejected as a runaway from the neighbouring R 136 cluster. The optical light-curve shows a clear orbital modulation that can be well explained as a combination of two processes: excess emission stemming from wind-wind collisions and double wind eclipses. Our light-curve model implies an orbital inclination of i=60.4+-1.5deg, resulting in accurately constrained dynamical masses of 74+-4 and 69+-4 Msun. Assuming that both binary components are core H-burning, these masses are difficult to reconcile with the derived luminosities (logL1,2 = 6.44, 6.39 [Lsun]), which correspond to evolutionary masses of the order of 110 and 100Msun, respectively. Taken at face value, our results imply that both stars have high classical Eddington factors of Gamma_e = 0.78+-0.1. If the stars are on the main sequence, their derived radii (~25Rsun) suggest that they are only slightly inflated, even at this high Eddington factor. Alternatively, the stars could be core-He burning, strongly inflated from the regular size of classical Wolf-Rayet stars (~1Rsun), a scenario that could help resolve the observed mass discrepancy., Comment: Accepted to A&A on the April 06 2021. 17 pages + 5 page appendix. We use X-ray and infrared observations to study the properties of three classes of young stars in the Carina Nebula: intermediate-mass (2--5~M$_\odot$) pre-main sequence stars (IMPS; i.e. intermediate-mass T Tauri stars), late-B and A stars on the zero-age main sequence (AB), and lower-mass T Tauri stars (TTS). We divide our sources among these three sub-classifications and further identify disk-bearing young stellar objects versus diskless sources with no detectable infrared (IR) excess emission using IR (1--8 $\mu$m) spectral energy distribution modeling. We then perform X-ray spectral fitting to determine the hydrogen absorbing column density ($N_{\rm H}$), absorption-corrected X-ray luminosity ($L_{\rm X}$), and coronal plasma temperature ($kT$) for each source. We find that the X-ray spectra of both IMPS and TTS are characterized by similar $kT$ and $N_{\rm H}$, and on average $L_{\rm X}$/$L_{\rm bol} \sim4\times10^{-4}$. IMPS are systematically more luminous in X-rays (by $\sim$0.3 dex) than all other sub-classifications, with median $L_{\rm X} = 2.5\times10^{31}$ erg s$^{-1}$, while AB stars of similar masses have X-ray emission consistent with TTS companions. These lines of evidence converge on a magneto-coronal flaring source for IMPS X-ray emission, a scaled-up version of the TTS emission mechanism. IMPS therefore provide powerful probes of isochronal ages for the first $\sim$10 Myr in the evolution of a massive stellar population, because their intrinsic, coronal X-ray emission decays rapidly after they commence evolving along radiative tracks. IRAS 09002-4732 is a poorly studied embedded cluster of stars in the Vela Molecular Ridge at a distance of 1.7kpc. Deep observations with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, combined with existing optical and infrared surveys, produce a catalog of 441 probable pre-main sequence members of the region. The stellar spatial distribution has two components: most stars reside in a rich, compact, elliptical cluster, but a minority reside within a molecular filament several parsecs long that straddles the cluster. The filament has active distributed star formation with dozens of unclustered protostars. The cluster pre-main sequence population is $\leq 0.8$ Myr old and deeply embedded; its most massive member is extremely young producing an ultracompact H II region. The cluster total population deduced from the X-ray luminosity function is surprisingly rich, twice that of the Orion Nebula Cluster. The cluster core is remarkably dense where strong N-body interactions should be occurring; its Initial Mass Function may be deficient in massive stars. We infer that IRAS 09002-4732 is a rare case where a rich cluster is forming today in a molecular filament, consistent with astrophysical models of cluster formation in clouds that involve the hierarchical formation and merging of groups in molecular filaments., Comment: 33 pages, 11 figures, 3 machine readable tables. We offer to the star formation community the third installment of the Massive Star-forming Regions (MSFRs) Omnibus X-ray Catalog (MOXC3), a compilation of X-ray point sources detected in 50 archival Chandra/ACIS observations of 14 Galactic MSFRs and surrounding fields. The MOXC3 MSFRs are NGC 2264, NGC 6193, RCW 108-IR, Aur OB1, DR15, NGC 6231, Berkeley 87, NGC 6357, AFGL 4029, h Per (NGC 869), NGC 281, Onsala 2S, G305, and RCW 49 (Wd 2); they have distances of 0.7 kpc to 4.2 kpc. Most exhibit clumped or clustered young stellar populations; several contain at least two distinct massive young stellar clusters. The total MOXC3 catalog includes 27,923 X-ray point sources. We take great care to identify even the faintest X-ray point sources across these fields. This allows us to remove this point source light, revealing diffuse X-ray structures that pervade and surround MSFRs, often generated by hot plasmas from massive star feedback. As we found in MOXC1 and MOXC2, diffuse X-ray emission is traceable in all MOXC3 MSFRs; here we perform spectral fitting to investigate the origins of selected diffuse regions.
