In order to meet its Kyoto Protocol commitment targets, the Italian Government has made relevant investments in forest projects in developing countries through the Clean Development Mechanism. This paper investigates the Italian participated afforestation/reforestation (A/R) projects under the Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol, by considering the countries hosting forestry projects, the project areas, the estimated emission reductions, the use of tree species (native/non-native), the issuance of Carbon credits, and the projects’ contribution to sustainable development and technology transfer in general, as stated by the “Project Design Document” of each project. This study utilizes the “Project Design Documents” and “Monitoring Reports” of the registered projects in the United Nations Convention on Climate Change database and data from the BioCarbon Fund database. Results show that, in terms of number of projects, the A/R sector is a prominent component of the Italian CDM portfolio. The financing of the 16 projects by the Italian government, with a total of about 65 k ha planted and an estimated emission reductions of about 556 k tCO2 eq per year, are based on criteria that differ substantially from the ongoing policy adopted for domestic forest interventions.

Purpose: To investigate the frequency and type of artifacts on OCT angiography (OCTA) images and the relationship with clinical features in eyes with diabetic macular edema (DME)., Design: Retrospective, cross-sectional comparative study., Subjects: One hundred ninety-two eyes of 140 patients with DME were included., Methods: Medical records, OCT and OCTA images (Spectralis), and ultrawidefield color fundus photographs (Optos plc) were evaluated., Main Outcome Measures: The frequency of artifact types (segmentation, motion, projection artifact, and low signal) was determined. The relationships between artifact types and clinical features such as best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), mean central retinal thickness (CRT), foveal avascular zone (FAZ) area, perimeter, circularity index, perfusion density (PD), vessel density (VD), fractal dimension (FD) in the superficial capillary plexus, intermediate capillary plexus (ICP), and deep capillary plexus (DCP), flow voids (FVs) in the choriocapillaris, presence of hard exudate (HE), and cataract were determined., Results: The mean age was 71.6 ± 11.4 years, and 86 (61.4%) out of 140 were men. Artifacts were present in 63 (32.8%) of 192 eyes. Twenty-nine (15.1%) eyes had segmentation artifacts, 12 (6.3%) had motion artifacts, 11 (5.7%) had projection artifacts, and 18 (9.4%) had low signal. Best-corrected visual acuity, PD, VD, and FD in ICP and DCP were significantly lower; and CRT, FAZ area and perimeter in ICP and DCP, and presence of cystoid macular edema, HE, and cataract were higher in eyes with artifacts versus eyes without artifacts (P < 0.05 for each). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed a significant association between segmentation artifacts and decreased BCVA (odds ratio [OR], 5.277; P = 0.02), increased CRT (OR, 1.015; P < 0.001), increased area of FAZ in DCP (OR, 6.625; P = 0.02), and increased perimeter of FAZ in DCP (OR, 1.775; P < 0.04); there was also a significant association between projection artifacts and presence of HE (OR, 2.017; P = 0.02) and between motion artifacts and presence of cataract (OR, 4.102; P = 0.01)., Conclusions: OCT angiography artifacts were present in one third of DME eyes, with segmentation artifacts being the most frequent type. Determining OCTA artifacts is crucial to ensure accurate clinical evaluation. Background: Retrospective data suggest that the incidence of parametrial infiltration is low in patients with early-stage low-risk cervical cancer, which raises questions regarding the need for radical hysterectomy in these patients. However, data from large, randomized trials comparing outcomes of radical and simple hysterectomy are lacking., Methods: We conducted a multicenter, randomized, noninferiority trial comparing radical hysterectomy with simple hysterectomy including lymph-node assessment in patients with low-risk cervical cancer (lesions of ≤2 cm with limited stromal invasion). The primary outcome was cancer recurrence in the pelvic area (pelvic recurrence) at 3 years. The prespecified noninferiority margin for the between-group difference in pelvic recurrence at 3 years was 4 percentage points., Results: Among 700 patients who underwent randomization (350 in each group), the majority had tumors that were stage IB 1 according to the 2009 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) criteria (91.7%), that had squamous-cell histologic features (61.7%), and that were grade 1 or 2 (59.3%). With a median follow-up time of 4.5 years, the incidence of pelvic recurrence at 3 years was 2.17% in the radical hysterectomy group and 2.52% in the simple hysterectomy group (an absolute difference of 0.35 percentage points; 90% confidence interval, -1.62 to 2.32). Results were similar in a per-protocol analysis. The incidence of urinary incontinence was lower in the simple hysterectomy group than in the radical hysterectomy group within 4 weeks after surgery (2.4% vs. 5.5%; P = 0.048) and beyond 4 weeks (4.7% vs. 11.0%; P = 0.003). The incidence of urinary retention in the simple hysterectomy group was also lower than that in the radical hysterectomy group within 4 weeks after surgery (0.6% vs. 11.0%; P<0.001) and beyond 4 weeks (0.6% vs. 9.9%; P<0.001)., Conclusions: In patients with low-risk cervical cancer, simple hysterectomy was not inferior to radical hysterectomy with respect to the 3-year incidence of pelvic recurrence and was associated with a lower risk of urinary incontinence or retention. Purpose: Dominant optic atrophy (DOA) is an inherited condition caused by autosomal dominant mutations involving the OPA-1 gene. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between macular ganglion cell and inner plexiform layer (GC-IPL) thickness obtained from structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) and visual outcomes in DOA patients., Methods: The study recruited 33 patients with confirmed OPA-1 heterozygous mutation and DOA. OCT scans were conducted to measure the GC-IPL thickness. The average and sectorial Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) charts (six-sector macular analysis to enhance the topographical analysis) centered on the fovea were considered. Several regression analyses were carried out to investigate the associations between OCT metrics and final best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) as the dependent variable., Results: The mean BCVA was 0.43 ± 0.37 logMAR, and the average macular GC-IPL thickness was 43.65 ± 12.56 µm. All of the GC-IPL sectors were significantly reduced and correlated with BCVA. The univariate linear regression and the multivariate stepwise regression modeling showed that the strongest association with final BCVA was observed with the internal superior GC-IPL thickness. Dividing patients based on BCVA, we found a specific pattern. Specifically, in patients with BCVA ≤ 0.3 logMAR, the external superior and inferior sectors together with the internal superior were more significant; whereas, for BCVA > 0.3 logMAR, the external superior sector and internal superior sector were more significant., Conclusions: The study identified OCT biomarkers associated with visual outcomes in DOA patients. Moreover, we assessed a specific OCT biomarker for DOA progression, ranging from patients in the early stages of disease with more preserved GC-IPL sectorial thickness to advanced stages with severe thinning.

Bioactive lipids have been identified as dynamic signaling lipid mediators (LMs). These fats have the ability to activate responses and control bodily functions either directly or indirectly. Linoleic Acid (LA) and Alpha Linoleic Acid (ALA) are types of omega 3 fatty acids that possess inflammatory properties and promote resolution of inflammation either through their own actions or through their metabolites known as oxylipins. In this chapter, we provide an explanation of a method that combines chromatography with tandem mass spectroscopy (LC MS/MS) to identify and measure all the metabolites derived from LA and ALA. Additionally, we employed the described methodology to analyze human serum samples obtained before and after whole-body vibration exercise training. The results indicated an increase in some of the LA and ALA LMs that have beneficial effects in regulating the cardiovascular system., (© 2024. Developing robust analytical techniques is a vital phase to facilitate understanding the roles and impacts of various omic profilings in cellular functions. The comprehensive analysis of various biological molecules within a biological system requires a precise sample preparation technique. Solid-Phase Extraction (SPE) has proven to be an indispensable method in lipidomic analysis, providing an uncomplicated and user-friendly technique for extraction and purification of lipid components from complex biological matrices. Of all the factors influencing the reliability and success of SPE, column or adsorbent materials, flow rate, and storage conditions are paramount in terms of their significance. In this chapter, we will discuss in detail the SPE steps for lipidomic analysis in biofluid samples (serum and plasma) and muscle tissues., (© 2024. Isolated individual myofibers are valuable experimental models that can be used in various conditions to understand skeletal muscle physiology and pathophysiology at the tissue and cellular level. This report details a time- and cost-effective method for isolation of single myofibers from the flexor digitorum brevis (FDB) muscle in both young and aged mice. The FDB muscle was chosen for its documented history in single myofiber experiments. By modifying published methods for FDB myofiber isolation, we have optimized the protocol by first separating FDB muscle into individual bundles before the digestion, followed by optimizing the subsequent digestion medium conditions to ensure reproducibility. Morphological and functional assessments demonstrate a high yield of isolated FDB myofibers with sarcolemma integrity achieved in a shorter time frame than previous published procedures. This method could be also adapted to other types of skeletal muscle. Additionally, this highly reproducible method can greatly reduce the number of animals needed to yield adequate numbers of myofibers for experiments. Thus, this advanced method for myofiber isolation has the potential to accelerate research in skeletal muscle physiology and screening potential therapeutics " ex vivo " for muscle diseases and regeneration.

In this review, we explore the application of novel biomaterial-based therapies specifically targeted towards craniofacial bone defects. The repair and regeneration of critical sized bone defects in the craniofacial region requires the use of bioactive materials to stabilize and expedite the healing process. However, the existing clinical approaches face challenges in effectively treating complex craniofacial bone defects, including issues such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and soft tissue loss. Given that a significant portion of individuals affected by traumatic bone defects in the craniofacial area belong to the aging population, there is an urgent need for innovative biomaterials to address the declining rate of new bone formation associated with age-related changes in the skeletal system. This article emphasizes the importance of semiconductor industry-derived materials as a potential solution to combat oxidative stress and address the challenges associated with aging bone. Furthermore, we discuss various material and autologous treatment approaches, as well as in vitro and in vivo models used to investigate new therapeutic strategies in the context of craniofacial bone repair. Despite its prevalence and consequences, perinatal healthcare providers' identification of gender-based violence (GBV) remains controversial in British Columbia. This study investigated women and healthcare providers' perspectives regarding their experiences with and views of inquiring about GBV during perinatal care. Twelve in-depth interviews were conducted with women with a history of GBV and 16 perinatal healthcare providers. Data were analyzed thematically. Three themes, including "barriers to disclosure," "healthcare providers hesitate to open Pandora's Box," and "how to ask in a culturally safe way," emerged from the data. Study participants support inquiry about GBV during perinatal healthcare.
