Abstract

Mosaic crystals, with their high integrated reflectivities, are widely-employed in spectrometers used to diagnose high energy density systems. X-ray Thomson scattering (XRTS) has emerged as a powerful diagnostic tool of these systems, providing in principle direct access to important properties such as the temperature via detailed balance. However, the measured XRTS spectrum is broadened by the spectrometer instrument function (IF), and without careful consideration of the IF one risks misdiagnosing system conditions. Here, we consider in detail the IF of 40 $\mu$m and 100 $\mu$m mosaic HAPG crystals, and how the broadening varies across the spectrometer in an energy range of 6.7-8.6 keV. Notably, we find a strong asymmetry in the shape of the IF towards higher energies. As an example, we consider the effect of the asymmetry in the IF on the temperature inferred via XRTS for simulated 80 eV CH plasmas, and find that the temperature can be overestimated if an approximate symmetric IF is used. We therefore expect a detailed consideration of the full IF will have an important impact on system properties inferred via XRTS in both forward modelling and model-free approaches., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

Abstract

Enhancing quality of life has become a central focus in the intellectual disabilities (ID) field, corresponding with the emergence of a social-ecological model of disability. An on-going narrative shift towards understanding capabilities and the interplay between individual ability and the environment is influencing service provision. Identifying cognitive strengths and weaknesses is one way of better understanding such capabilities and thus contributing to maximising environments, for example, by informing support needs and other pertinent factors that play a role in overall quality of life. Literature Review Personal and environmental factors that contribute to the quality of life of people labelled with ID were reviewed. Fourteen quantitative papers were synthesised and indicated a particular association between cognitive ability, environments that foster agency, choices and personalisation, and quality of life. Diverse methodologies, sampling, and broader inclusion of predictor variables could enrich future quality of life research. Research Report This study explored the initial validation of a neuropsychological measure: the Short Parallel Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (SPANS), with a sample of 29 adults with ID and 29 typically-developing (TD) adults. Among TD samples, the SPANS 'measures' a range of cognitive domains such as memory and learning, attention/concentration, and conceptual flexibility. In ID test performances may contribute to increasing understanding and promoting personalisation of support. A mixed methods approach revealed that the SPANS appears to measure different constructs to the general population, and as hypothesised the TD outperformed the ID group in every domain. Interviews captured that participants generally enjoyed the SPANS, were reminded of daily tasks, and had a sense of awareness of their own abilities which impacted their confidence and performance. 40. The experiences and psychological impact of living with premenstrual disorders: a systematic review and thematic synthesis.

Introduction: As the psychological impact and decreased quality of life experienced by women living with a Premenstrual Disorder (PMD) has been reported in the literature, the aim of this systematic review and thematic synthesis was to explore a) their experiences and the psychological impact of PMDs, specifically Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), and b) their perceived support needs. Method: Six databases were searched for publications reporting on qualitative studies, since the database inception. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed. Results: Seventeen papers reporting on 479 women met the inclusion criteria: ten focused on PMS, six on PMDD and one on PMS and PMDD combined. Two main PMD themes were identified: 1) controlled by PMDs, which had three subthemes, and 2) a women and life left broken, with five subthemes. Conclusion: Women's accounts revealed that experiences of PMDs were intense, life changing and life-controlling. Women were left holding the responsibility of understanding and managing their own condition, whilst advocating for themselves in a healthcare setting in which their condition has been little understood. Consequently, women developed coping strategies to lead a functional life, and experienced changes to their sense of self. Abstract

After the 2020 presidential election, sustained efforts to overturn outcomes culminated in the invasion of the United States Capitol. While scholars have long investigated the impact of news on support for left-leaning protests, it is critical to understand how political predispositions and news consumption relate to support for anti-democratic movements. Through a survey fielded one week after the invasion, we analyzed how ideology, attitudes about protesting in general, authoritarianism, and media habits relate to people’s support for the movement, perceptions of its disruptiveness, and opinions about police response. Results show that conservative media have a strong unidirectional relationship, increasing support for the movement, while left-leaning or mainstream media impact is moderated by partisanship, which is related to increased support for liberals and decreased support for conservatives. We found authoritarianism related to support for Stop the Steal and perceptions of the police as too severe to suppress it. Evidence suggests elite cues and consumption of conservative media can legitimize insurrectionist movements, even among those who strongly oppose the right to protest overall. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

42. Informing Teacher Education through the Use of Multiple Classroom Observation Instruments

Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to examine how first-year secondary teaching interns' classrooms compare to those of more experienced teachers. Through the simultaneous use of three unique observation instruments, the authors addressed the following research questions: (a) How do first-year secondary teachers' classroom behaviors compare to those of more experienced teachers? (b) How do first-year secondary teachers' students' behaviors compare to those of more experienced teachers? and (c) How do first-year teachers' overall classroom environments compare to those of more experienced teachers? Each of the instruments revealed a different perspective of the classroom procedures and combined to provide a comprehensive picture that was not otherwise possible through use of any one instrument alone. Overall and across all three instruments, the authors found substantial variability within both groups for many of the observed behaviors and environmental aspects. This large variability may be due to school-related factors and student demographic characteristics that impact classroom instruction. Content-related differences may also account for the wide variation with groups. By dividing the focus of the observations between the three areas, teachers, students, and classroom environments, researchers were able to gain deeper insight into the dynamics of the observed classrooms than would have been possible with a single instrument. By using multiple observation protocols to study the classrooms of both novice and experienced teachers, researchers were able to discern differences in pedagogy and classroom environment that would not have been evident via other data collection methods. It would be prudent to extend this line of research in the future by observing more teachers who fall into each category to build a more robust database with greater reliability.

47. Beyond the Online versus On-Campus Debate: Leveraging Technology in a CoI Framework to Enhance Student and Faculty Presence in the MSW Classroom

Abstract

While research typically utilizes Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) to evaluate online education programs (OEP) compared to on-campus programs (OCP), little attention is given to other qualitative elements which enhance student social presence or faculty teaching presence. The authors examine the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework and demonstrate how MSW programs with an OEP can incorporate elements to enhance student learning. Research and data included will attempt to move the discussion beyond the OEP versus OCP debate and include more pertinent ideas regarding the importance and impact of leveraging technology in MSW social work education.
