Dynamic shockless compression experiments provide the ability to explore material behavior at extreme pressures but relatively low temperatures. Typically, the data from these types of experiments are interpreted through an analytic method called Lagrangian analysis. In this work, alternative analysis methods are explored using modern statistical methods. Specifically, Bayesian model calibration is applied to a new set of platinum data shocklessly compressed to 570 GPa. Several platinum equation-of-state models are evaluated, including traditional parametric forms as well as a novel non-parametric model concept. The results are compared to those in Paper I obtained by inverse Lagrangian analysis. The comparisons suggest that Bayesian calibration is not only a viable framework for precise quantification of the compression path, but also reveals insights pertaining to trade-offs surrounding model form selection, sensitivities of the relevant experimental uncertainties, and assumptions and limitations within Lagrangian analysis. The non-parametric model method, in particular, is found to give precise unbiased results and is expected to be useful over a wide range of applications. The calibration results in estimates of the platinum principal isentrope over the full range of experimental pressures to a standard error of 1.6%, which extends the results from Paper I while maintaining the high precision required for the platinum pressure standard. Absolute measurements of solid-material compressibility by magnetically driven shockless dynamic compression experiments to multi-megabar pressures have the potential to greatly improve the accuracy and precision of pressure calibration standards for use in diamond anvil cell experiments. To this end, we apply characteristics-based inverse Lagrangian analysis (ILA) to 11 sets of ramp-compression data on pure platinum (Pt) metal and then reduce the resulting weighted-mean stress–strain curve to the principal isentrope and room-temperature isotherm using simple models for yield stress and Grüneisen parameter. We introduce several improvements to methods for ILA and quasi-isentrope reduction, the latter including calculation of corrections in wave speed instead of stress and pressure to render results largely independent of initial yield stress while enforcing thermodynamic consistency near zero pressure. More importantly, we quantify in detail the propagation of experimental uncertainty through ILA and model uncertainty through quasi-isentrope reduction, considering all potential sources of error except the electrode and window material models used in ILA. Compared to previous approaches, we find larger uncertainty in longitudinal stress. Monte Carlo analysis demonstrates that uncertainty in the yield-stress model constitutes by far the largest contribution to uncertainty in quasi-isentrope reduction corrections. We present a new room-temperature isotherm for Pt up to 444 GPa, with 1-sigma uncertainty at that pressure of just under ± 1.2 % ; the latter is about a factor of three smaller than uncertainty previously reported for multi-megabar ramp-compression experiments on Pt. The result is well represented by a Vinet-form compression curve with (isothermal) bulk modulus K 0 = 270.3 ± 3.8 GPa, pressure derivative K 0 ′ = 5.66 ± 0.10 , and correlation coefficient R K 0 , K 0 ′ = − 0.843. Purpose: Detailed reporting of individually tailored exercise prescriptions (ExRx) used in clinical trials is essential to describe feasibility, tolerability, and efficacy of the intervention and to inform translation to clinical care. This article outlines the methodology used to develop a resistance training (RT) ExRx for people with colon cancer receiving chemotherapy and reports adherence to the randomized controlled trial testing the impact of RT on relative dose intensity of chemotherapy and patient-reported toxicities. Methods: Participants randomized to the exercise arm (n = 90) were included. To promote muscle hypertrophy, the ExRx was twice-weekly, moderate to heavy loads (65%-85% one-repetition maximum), high sets (3-5), and intermediate repetitions (6-10) of five large multijoint movements with adjustable dumbbells. Attendance (achieved frequency) and adherence (achieved volume) were calculated. Group-based trajectory modeling was used to identify clusters of individuals with similar adherence patterns and compared baseline characteristics across adherence groups. Results: The median attendance was 69.1%. Adherence was 60.6% but higher for those receiving 3 versus 6 months of chemotherapy (80.4 vs 47.4%; P < 0.05). Participants engaged in a median of 1.4 d of RT each week, lifting 62% of the one-repetition maximum load, for 3.0 sets and 7.5 repetitions per set. Three distinct adherence groups were identified: 13% "nonstarter," 37% "tapered off," and 50% "consistent exercisers." Females were more likely to be in the nonstarter and tapered-off groups. Conclusions: This article outlines suggested methods for reporting ExRx of RT in oncology clinical trials and provides insight into the tolerance of ExRx of RT during chemotherapy treatment for colon cancer. We detected antibodies to H5 and N1 subtype influenza A viruses in 4/194 (2%) dogs from Washington, USA, that hunted or engaged in hunt tests and training with wild birds. Background: Many patients with colon cancer cannot fully adhere to postoperative chemotherapy due to dose-limiting toxicities, resulting in lower relative dose intensity (RDI) and potentially compromising overall survival. This study examined whether home-based resistance training (RT) during adjuvant chemotherapy improves RDI and patient-reported toxicities versus usual care (UC) in colon cancer patients. Methods: Multicenter, randomized control trial (RCT) conducted at community and academic practices. Enrollment of patients receiving postoperative chemotherapy for colon cancer occurred between February 23, 2018, and September 29, 2021; final follow-up was March 21, 2022. Participants were randomized to RT (n = 90) or UC (n = 91) for the duration of chemotherapy. Participants in the RT group engaged in twice weekly home-based progressive RT. At the end of the study, UC was given an online exercise program. Results: Among 181 randomized patients (mean age, 55.2 [SD, 12.8] years, 95 [52.5%] were men), there were no differences in the mean RDI among those in RT (79% [SD, 19%]) and those in UC (82% [SD, 19%]); (mean difference -0.04 [95% confidence interval (CI), -0.09 to 0.02]). Assignment to RT did not significantly reduce the number of moderate/severe symptoms per week across follow-up (relative rate: 0.94 [95% CI, 0.72-1.22]). Additionally, time since randomization did not significantly modify the effect of RT on the overall number of symptoms (p = .06). Conclusions: Among patients with colon cancer, these results do not support homebased RT as an adjunct to chemotherapy specifically to improve planned treatment intensity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through an expansive series of simulations, we investigate the effects of spatially uniform shear on the transport, structure, and dynamics of salt fingers. The simulations reveal that shear adversely affects the heat and salt fluxes of the system, reducing them by up to an order of magnitude. We characterize this in detail across a broad range of Richardson numbers and density ratios. We demonstrate that the density ratio is strongly related to the amount of shear required to disrupt fingers, with larger density ratio systems being more susceptible to disruption. An empirical relationship is proposed that captures this behavior that could be implemented into global ocean models. The results of these simulations accurately reproduce the microstructure measurements from North Atlantic Tracer Release Experiment (NATRE) observations. This work suggests that typical salt finger fluxes in the ocean will likely be a factor of 2–3 less than predicted by models not taking the effects of shear on double-diffusive systems into account. Significance Statement: The purpose of this work is to measure how large-scale (>1 m) motion affects specific small-scale (∼1 cm) mixing in the ocean. We approach this topic using simulations of meter-scale boxes of fluid containing both temperature and salt concentration with an applied background flow. We measure how this background flow changes the mixing of temperature and salt as the strength of the applied flow increases. We find that current estimates may overpredict mixing at this scale throughout the World Ocean by about a factor of 2–3, on average. Neutralizing antibodies to Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) can be detected by 3 weeks post-infection and remain detectable through at least 24 weeks post-infection. The objective of this study was to evaluate the levels of neutralizing antibodies in sow and piglet serum and sow milk to determine the duration of neutralizing antibodies following PEDV outbreaks. Two farms were selected for the study following outbreaks of PEDV. Monthly, cohorts of sows were sampled and followed through two farrowings. Following each farrowing, samples from piglets and milk were collected. Samples were evaluated for PEDV-neutralizing antibodies by a high-throughput fluorescent neutralization assay. Although neutralizing antibodies to PEDV can be detected throughout 15 months post-outbreak, a decrease in circulating neutralizing antibody levels is noted in farms beginning at six months post-outbreak. With decreasing levels, farms may become more vulnerable to PEDV outbreaks, and practitioners can focus on this time window to implement intervention strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pediatric molecular imaging requires a balance between administering an activity that will yield sufficient diagnostic image quality while maintaining patient radiation exposure at acceptable levels. In current clinical practice, this balance is arrived at by the current North American Consensus Guidelines in which patient weight is used to recommend the administered activity (AA). Purpose: We have previously demonstrated that girth (waist circumference at the level of the kidneys) is better at equalizing image quality than patient weight for pediatric Tc‐99m DMSA renal function imaging. However, the correlation between image quality (IQ), AA, and patient girth has not been rigorously and systematically developed. In this work, we generate a series of curves showing the tradeoff between AA and IQ as a function of patient girth, providing the data for standards bodies to develop the next generation of dosing guideline for pediatric DMSA SPECT. Methods: An anthropomorphic phantom series that included variations in age (5, 10, and 15 years), gender (M, F), local body morphometry (5, 10, 50, 90, and 95th girth percentiles), and kidney size (±15% standard size), was used to generate realistic SPECT projections. A fixed and clinically challenging defect‐to‐organ volume percentage (0.49% of renal cortex value) was used to model a focal defect with zero uptake (i.e., full local loss of renal function). Task‐based IQ assessment methods were used to rigorously measure IQ in terms of renal perfusion defect detectability. This assessment was performed at multiple count levels (corresponding to various AAs) for groups of patients that had similar girths and defect sizes. Receiver‐operating characteristics (ROC) analysis was applied; the area under the ROC curve (AUC) was used as a figure‐of‐merit for task performance. Curves showing the tradeoff between AUC and AA were generated for these groups of phantoms. Results: Overall, the girth‐based dosing method suggested different amounts of AA compared to weight‐based dosing for the phantoms that had a relatively large body weight but a small girth or phantoms with relatively small bodyweight but large girth. Reductions of AA to 62.9% compared to weight‐based dosing guidelines can potentially be realized while maintaining a baseline (AUC = 0.80) IQ for certain 15‐year‐olds who have a relatively small girth and large defect size. Note that the task‐based IQ results are heavily dependent on the simulated defect size for the defect detection task and the appropriate AUC value must be decided by the physicians for this diagnostic task. These results are based purely on simulation and are subject to future clinical validation. Conclusions: The study provides simulation‐based IQ‐AA data for a girth‐based dosing method for pediatric renal SPECT, suggesting that patient waist circumference at the level of kidneys should be considered in selecting the AA needed to achieve an acceptable IQ. Reaching astrophysically relevant high energy density (HED) material states in the laboratory is an ongoing effort at multiple experimental facilities. We have developed a new dynamic compression platform for the Z Pulsed Power Facility that allows for sample sizes 100s of μ m in thickness that accommodate multiple grains in order to fully capture bulk properties, such as material strength. A pair of experiments compressed platinum (Pt) to HED conditions and conventional inverse Lagrangian analysis as well as a recent Bayesian calibration technique were used to determine the principal isentrope to 650 GPa with density uncertainties of <2%. These low uncertainties are calculated for single sample experiments, presenting the possibility of even smaller experimental uncertainties with multiple samples the platform allows. Our new platform extends the accessible Pt ramp pressures achievable on the Z machine to over 80% of the pressure recently achieved using the National Ignition Facility planar Hohlraum platform. This new capability, the next generation evolution of the stripline platform, was made possible by advancements in both our understanding of the Z pulsed power driver and our overall magnetohydrodynamic modeling capabilities. Background: One in three patients with stage III colon cancer will experience tumor recurrence. It is uncertain whether physical activity during and after postoperative chemotherapy for stage III colon cancer improves overall survival after tumor recurrence. Methods: A prospective cohort study nested within a randomized multicenter trial of patients initially diagnosed with stage III colon cancer who experienced tumor recurrence (N = 399) was conducted. Postoperative physical activity before tumor recurrence was measured. Physical activity energy expenditure was quantified via metabolic equivalent task hours per week (MET‐h/week). The primary end point was overall survival after tumor recurrence. Multivariable flexible parametric survival models estimated relative and absolute effects with two‐sided hypothesis tests. Results: Compared with patients expending <3.0 MET‐h/week of physical activity (comparable to <1.0 h/week of brisk walking), patients with ≥18.0 MET‐h/week of physical activity (comparable to 6 h/week of brisk walking) had a 33% relative improvement in overall survival time after tumor recurrence (hazard ratio, 0.67; 95% CI, 0.42–0.96). The overall survival rate at 3 years after tumor recurrence was 61.3% (95% CI, 51.8%–69.2%) with <3.0 MET‐h/week of physical activity and 72.2% (95% CI, 63.1%–79.6%) with ≥18 MET‐h/week of physical activity (risk difference, 10.9 percentage points; 95% CI, 1.2–20.8 percentage points). Conclusions: Higher postoperative physical activity is associated with improved overall survival after tumor recurrence in patients initially diagnosed with stage III colon cancer. These data may be relevant to patients who, despite optimal postoperative medical therapy, have a high risk of tumor recurrence. Among patients initially diagnosed with stage III colon cancer enrolled in a trial of postoperative treatment, higher postoperative physical activity is associated with improved overall survival after tumor recurrence. Background: Posterior medial meniscus root (PMMR) tears are a challenge to assess and treat. However, the forces sustained at the PMMR are yet to be fully characterized. In addition, it has been shown that meniscotibial ligament (MTL) injuries happen before PMMR tears, suggesting that insufficiency of the MTL results in a change of forces acting on the PMMR. Purpose/Hypothesis: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 3-dimensional forces acting on the PMMR in the intact, MTL cut, and MTL tenodesis states. It was hypothesized that the MTL cut state would increase medial shear forces seen at the PMMR, whereas the medial shear force in the MTL tenodesis state would return PMMR forces to that of the intact state. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric knees were tested in 3 states (intact, MTL cut, and tenodesis). A 3-axis load cell was installed below the posterior tibial plateau and attached to the enthesis of the PMMR. The specimen was mounted to a load frame that applied an axial load, an internal torque, and an external torque. The amount of compression-tension, mediolateral shear force, and anteroposterior shear force acting on the PMMR was measured. Results: When the joint was loaded in compression, the MTL cut state significantly increased compression of the PMMR (P =.0368). The tenodesis state did not significantly restore forces of the PMMR (P =.008). When the joint was loaded in external torque, the MTL cut state significantly increased compression (P <.0001) and significantly decreased anterior shear on the PMMR (P =.0003). The tenodesis state did not significantly restore forces on the PMMR to the intact state (P <.0001). Increased flexion angle significantly increased medial shear forces of the PMMR when the joint was loaded in compression (P <.007 at every angle). Conclusion: When evaluated biomechanically, MTL insufficiency resulted in increased compressive force at the PMMR. A single-anchor centralization procedure did not restore PMMR forces to that of the intact state. Increased knee flexion angle resulted in increased medial shear force on the PMMR. Clinical Relevance: The findings in this study provide clinicians information on PMMR forces when the MTL is disrupted. Background: Posterior medial meniscus root (PMMR) tears have been associated with increased posterior tibial slope, but this has not been fully evaluated biomechanically. In addition, the effects of knee flexion and rotation on the PMMR are not well understood biomechanically because of technological testing limitations. A novel multiaxial force sensor has made it possible to elucidate answers to these questions. Purpose: (1) To determine if increased posterior tibial slope results in increased posterior shear force and compression on the PMMR, (2) to evaluate how knee flexion angle affects PMMR forces, and (3) to assess how internal and external rotation affects force at the PMMR. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric knees were tested in all combinations of 3 posterior tibial slopes and 4 flexion angles. A multiaxial force sensor was connected to the PMMR and installed below the posterior tibial plateau maintaining anatomic position. The specimen underwent a 500-N compression load followed by a 5-N·m internal torque and a 5-N·m external torque. The magnitude and direction of the forces acting on the PMMR were measured. Results: Under joint compression, an increased tibial slope significantly reduced the tension on the PMMR between 5° and 10° (from 13.5 N to 6.4 N), after which it transitioned to a significant increase in PMMR compression, reaching 7.6 N at 15°. Under internal torque, increased tibial slope resulted in 4.7 N of posterior shear at 5° significantly changed to 2.0 N of anterior shear at 10° and then 8.2 N of anterior shear at 15°. Under external torque, increased tibial slope significantly decreased PMMR compression (5°: 8.9 N; 10°: 4.3 N; 15°: 1.1 N). Under joint compression, increased flexion angle significantly increased medial shear forces of the PMMR (0°, 3.8 N; 30°, 6.2 N; 60°, 7.3 N; 90°, 8.4 N). Under internal torque, 90° of flexion significantly increased PMMR tension from 2.3 N to 7.5 N. Under external torque, 30° of flexion significantly increased PMMR compression from 4.7 N to 12.2 N. Conclusion: An increased posterior tibial slope affects compression and anterior shear forces at the PMMR. An increased flexion angle affects compression, tension, and medial shear forces at the PMMR. Clinical Relevance: The increase in compression and posterior shear force when the knee is loaded in compression may place the PMMR under increased stress and risk potential failure after repair. Introduction: Screw cut out and varus collapse are the most common complication of locked plate fixation of proximal humerus fractures. The purpose of this study was to compare dual plating and endosteal fibular allograft struts as augmentation strategies to prevent varus collapse. Materials and methods: A trapezoidal osteotomy was created at the metaphysis to create a 2-part proximal humerus model in 18 paired shoulder specimens. Each specimen was assigned to group A, B, or C and was fixed with either a lateral locking plate, a lateral locking plate and anterior one-third tubular plate in an orthogonal 90/90 configuration, or a lateral locking plate with intramedullary fibular strut, respectively. The specimens were stressed in axial compression to failure. Displacement, elastic limit, ultimate load, and stiffness were recorded and calculated. Results: There was no difference in mean cyclic displacement between the three groups (0.71 mm vs 0.89 mm vs 0.61 mm for Group A, B, C, respectively). Lateral plating demonstrated the greatest absolute and relative displacement at the elastic limit (5.3 mm ± 1.5 and 4.4 mm ± 1.3) without significance. The elastic limit or yield point was greatest for fibular allograft, Group C (1223 N ± 501 vs 1048 N ± 367 for Group B and 951 N ± 249 for Group A) without significance. Conclusions: Dual plating of proximal humerus fractures in a 90–90 configuration demonstrates similar biomechanical properties as endosteal fibular strut allograft. Background: Existing biomechanical studies of posterior glenoid bone loss and labral pathology are limited by their use of anterior instability models, which differ in both orientation and morphology and have been performed in only a single, neutral arm position. Purpose: To evaluate the biomechanical effectiveness of a posterior labral repair in the setting of a clinically relevant posterior bone loss model in various at-risk arm positions. Study Design: Controlled laboratory study. Methods: Ten fresh-frozen cadaveric shoulders were tested in 7 consecutive states using a 6 degrees of freedom robotic arm: (1) native, (2) posterior labral tear (6-9 o'clock), (3) posterior labral repair, (4) mean posterior glenoid bone loss (7%) with labral tear, (5) mean posterior glenoid bone loss with labral repair, (6) large posterior glenoid bone loss (28%) with labral tear, and (7) large posterior glenoid bone loss with labral repair. Bone loss was created using 3-dimensional printed computed tomography model templates. Biomechanical testing consisted of 75 N of posterior-inferior force and 75 N of compression at 60° and 90° of flexion and scaption. Posterior-inferior translation, lateral translation, and peak dislocation force were measured for each condition. Results: Labral repair significantly increased dislocation force independent of bone loss state between 10.1 and 14.8 N depending on arm position. Dislocation force significantly decreased between no bone loss and small bone loss (11.9-13.5 N), small bone loss and large bone loss (9.4-14.3 N), and no bone loss and large bone loss (21.2-26.5 N). Labral repair significantly decreased posterior-inferior translation compared with labral tear states by a range of 1.0 to 2.3 mm. In the native state, the shoulder was most unstable in 60° of scaption, with 29.9 ± 6.1-mm posterior-inferior translation. Conclusion: Posterior labral repair improved stability of the glenohumeral joint, and even in smaller to medium amounts of posterior glenoid bone loss the glenohumeral stability was maintained with labral repair in this cadaveric model. However, a labral repair with large bone loss could not improve stability to the native state. Purpose: To evaluate a new class of blood-based biomarkers, anti-frameshift peptide antibodies, for predicting both tumor responses and adverse immune events to immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapies in advanced lung cancer patients. Experimental design: Serum samples were obtained from 74 lung cancer patients prior to palliative PD-(L)1 therapies with subsequently recorded tumor responses and immune adverse events (irAEs). Pretreatment samples were assayed on microarrays of frameshift peptides (FSPs), representing ~ 375,000 variant peptides that tumor cells can be informatically predicted to produce from translated mRNA processing errors. Serum-antibodies specifically recognizing these ligands were measured. Binding activities preferentially associated with best-response and adverse-event outcomes were determined. These antibody bound FSPs were used in iterative resampling analyses to develop predictive models of tumor response and immune toxicity. Results: Lung cancer serum samples were classified based on predictive models of ICI treatment outcomes. Disease progression was predicted pretreatment with ~ 98% accuracy in the full cohort of all response categories, though ~ 30% of the samples were indeterminate. This model was built with a heterogeneous sample cohort from patients that (i) would show either clear response or stable outcomes, (ii) would be administered either single or combination therapies and (iii) were diagnosed with different lung cancer subtypes. Removing the stable disease, combination therapy or SCLC groups from model building increased the proportion of samples classified while performance remained high. Informatic analyses showed that several of the FSPs in the all-response model mapped to translations of variant mRNAs from the same genes. In the predictive model for treatment toxicities, binding to irAE-associated FSPs provided 90% accuracy pretreatment, with no indeterminates. Several of the classifying FSPs displayed sequence similarity to self-proteins. Conclusions: Anti-FSP antibodies may serve as biomarkers for predicting ICI outcomes when tested against ligands corresponding to mRNA-error derived FSPs. Post-tensioned (PT) timber technology, also referred to as Pres-Lam (prestressed laminated timber) provides a low damage seismic design solution. So far PT timber research and practical implementation have focused on moment resisting frames, planar shear walls and coupled planar shear wall—or column-wall-column—systems and their analytical prediction models were adapted and extended from precast concrete to account for the unique characteristics of engineered timber. Following a recent experimental study on a PT cross-laminated timber (CLT) C-shaped core-wall system aiming to enhance lateral strength and stiffness, this paper presents an analytical framework/model to capture three unique kinematic rocking mechanisms for a PT C-shaped CLT core-wall system connected primarily with self-tapping screws. Depending on the relative stiffness of the screwed connections to the PT and the energy dissipaters, the model considers different kinematic responses, and that a staged kinematic response could occur at different imposed core-wall base connection rotations. It also accounts for the material inhomogeneity of CLT with nonedge glued lamella and implements a nonlinear spring model for the screwed connections calibrated from component testing and expected elastic core-wall deformations. Objectives Five-factor model (FFM) personality traits are associated with concurrent memory function and risk of incident dementia but are less consistently associated with the change in episodic memory. The present research analyzes multiple large-scale studies with a consistent analytic approach to evaluate the association between personality and change in episodic memory over time. Method Across nine public longitudinal data sets, 120,640 participants provided 471,821 memory assessments over up to 26 years (age range 18–108). FFM traits were tested as predictors of the average level (intercept) and change over time (slope) of episodic memory. Results from the individual samples were meta-analyzed to summarize the associations. Results Consistent with expectations for the intercept, higher neuroticism was associated with worse memory performance, whereas higher openness and conscientiousness were associated with better performance; extraversion and agreeableness were also associated with better performance. Higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness were related to declines in memory only in samples with more than two assessments of memory. The other three traits were unrelated to memory slope. The pattern was similar when participants with dementia were excluded from the analysis, and the association with the slope was not moderated by age. Discussion FFM traits have a robust association with average memory performance. Higher neuroticism and lower conscientiousness were associated with declines in memory performance only among samples with more than two memory assessments. The heterogeneity across studies suggests that multiple memory assessments are needed to reliably detect change over time, which may be one reason for past inconsistencies across studies. Simple Summary: Antibodies are transmitted from a sow to her piglets through milk. Antibodies can be detected through various diagnostic assays and monitoring a sow's antibody levels in serum may help determine if a detectable immune response could offer protection for piglets. Two diagnostic assays for the detection of neutralizing antibodies for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus were compared in this study. The assays showed moderate agreement and they can be utilized to monitor antibody levels of sows. The high-throughput neutralization assay showed advantages when compared to the fluorescent focus neutralization assay including higher specificity and greater discrimination of results. Lactogenic immunity is important for the protection of piglets against many pathogens including porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. This study evaluated the diagnostic characteristics of two neutralizing antibody assays for porcine epidemic diarrhea virus neutralizing antibodies in serum of challenged gilts. Four treatment groups, control, non-vaccinated, vaccinated prior to challenge, and vaccinated following challenge, were comprised of 20 gilts. Serum sample were collected from each gilt prior to and following challenge with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus. Samples were evaluated for the presence of neutralizing antibodies via a fluorescent focus neutralization assay and a high-throughput neutralization assay. Diagnostic sensitivity and specificity for the fluorescent focus neutralization and high-throughput neutralization assays for this study were optimized at a cutoff of a dilution of 80 and 80% fluorescent reduction respectively and demonstrated moderate agreement based off the kappa statistic. The focus fluorescent neutralization and high-throughput neutralization assays can be used to monitor the status of neutralizing antibodies within animals or a population of animals. The high-throughput assay has advantages over the focus fluorescent assay in that it has a higher specificity at the indicated cut-off and the nature of the results allows for more discrimination between individual results. Purpose: Physical inactivity and obesity increase risk for breast cancer recurrence and cardiovascular death; inflammation is hypothesized to mediate these associations. Methods: In a four-arm randomized controlled trial, 318 breast cancer survivors with overweight or obesity were randomized to exercise alone, weight loss alone, exercise plus weight loss, or control for 12 months. Inflammation outcomes included C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA), intracellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1). Results: Compared with control, exercise alone increased ICAM-1 (9.3%; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.6–16.9) and VCAM-1 (8.6%; 95% CI = 2.6–14.5) but did not change CRP or SAA. Compared with control, weight loss alone reduced CRP (−35.2%; 95% CI = −49.9 to −20.7), and SAA (−25.6%; 95% CI = −39.8 to −11.9) but did not change ICAM-1 or VCAM-1. Compared with control, exercise plus weight loss reduced CRP (−44.1%; 95% CI = −57.1 to −31.1) and SAA (−26.6%; 95% CI = −40.5 to −12.6) but did not change ICAM-1 or VCAM-1. Among 194 participants with elevated CRP at baseline (e.g., >3 mg·L−1), compared with control, weight loss alone (0.17; 95% CI = 0.04–0.30) and exercise plus weight loss (0.31; 95% CI = 0.16–0.46) increased the probability of achieving normal CRP at month 12. In analyses that consolidated randomized groups, body weight and adiposity reductions, but not change in fitness level, correlated with decreased CRP, SAA, and ICAM-1 levels. Conclusions: In breast cancer survivors with overweight or obesity, weight loss or exercise plus weight loss reduced measures of inflammation that are associated with breast cancer recurrence and cardiovascular death. We introduce a pseudo‐spectral algorithm that includes full compressible dynamics with the intent of simulating near‐incompressible fluids, CaTSM (Compressible and Thermodynamically consistent Spectral Model). A semi‐implicit scheme is used to model acoustic waves in order to evolve the system efficiently for such fluids. We demonstrate the convergence properties of this numerical code for the case of a shock tube and for Rayleigh‐Taylor instability. A linear equation of state is also presented, which relates the specific volume of the fluid linearly to the potential temperature, salinity, and pressure. This permits the results to be easily compared to a Boussinesq framework in order to assess whether the Boussinesq approximation adequately represents the relevant exchange of energy to the problem of interest. One such application is included, that of the development of a single salt finger, and it is shown that the energetic behavior of the system is comparable to the typical canonical development of the problem for oceanographic parameters. However, for more compressible systems, the results change substantially even for low‐Mach number flows. Plain Language Summary: In developing numerical models for liquids, such as seawater, it is often necessary to make approximations about some properties of the flow. These approximations can include the degree to which the flow can be compressed, the importance of planetary rotation, the proximity of boundaries, etc. The approximation that the fluid cannot be compressed allows modelers to ignore the effects of sound waves, which can be difficult to model. This has undesired consequences for some other properties of the flow: it alters the physics of near‐sonic flows, it limits study to regions where the density is nearly uniform, and it has consequences for the relationship of pressure to density. For example, the pressure of the system is often decoupled from the temperature as it would ordinarily be expected to be for a fully consistent system. For many flows, these small inconsistencies in energy exchange do not matter as they do not substantially affect the bulk behavior. Though thermohaline staircases exist in a large fraction of the Arctic halocline, the interactions of such staircases with shear and turbulence are still largely unexplored. We perform a series of three‐dimensional Direct Numerical Simulations with and without shear and demonstrate the capacity of shear to disrupt Arctic staircases. We force an oscillating shear throughout the domain in order to represent the effects of passing internal waves of wavelengths much larger than the simulated domain. Shear is shown to disrupt staircases when the Richardson number falls below 1/4 for small layer heights (0.5 m thick), but larger layers (1 m thick) are more resistant. We determine the presence and strength of the layers using measures of steppiness from the literature, finding that a metric based on the rms temperature gradient proves most accurate. This work demonstrates that double‐diffusive interfaces can be surprisingly robust, sometimes even maintaining their structure in strong, dynamically unstable shears. Near the top of this watermass, where the temperature decreases rapidly, stacks of layers are present, each about 1–3 m tall, within which temperature and salinity are uniform. African swine fever virus was first identified and characterized in Africa in the early 1900s, but it has spread exponentially in Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean since 2018. While it is a disease that exclusively affects swine, thus posing no infectious risk to human health, the virus’s resiliency and human behavior have facilitated the rapid global dissemination of the virus over the past 4 years. In this Currents in One Health, we will review its epidemiology, viral characteristics, host range, and current prevention strategies; the current perspective on what a response would look like and who would be affected; and if the virus was ever found in the US. Due to the fact that the virus affects all breeds of Sus scrofa, including those used for food and companionship, it is vital for all veterinarians to work together to keep the virus out of the US. Insufficient physical activity and obesity are associated with an increased risk of cancer recurrence and death in breast cancer survivors. Sex steroid hormones may mediate these associations. This study tested the hypothesis that exercise and diet, as compared to control, favorably change sex steroid hormones. This analysis of data from a subset of participants in a 2 × 2 factorial trial compares 269 postmenopausal breast cancer survivors who were insufficiently physically active and had overweight or obesity and were randomized to one of four treatment groups for 52 weeks: control, exercise alone, diet alone, or exercise plus diet. Secondary sex steroid hormone endpoints included estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and testosterone. Treatment effects were quantified using a mixed model for repeated measures. Compared to control, exercise alone did not significantly change estradiol (-1.9%; 95% CI: -12.6, 8.8), SHBG (2.4%; 95% CI: -9.9, 14.6), or testosterone (1.2%; 95% CI: -12.2, 14.5). Compared to control, diet alone did not significantly change estradiol (-7.8%; 95% CI: -17.6, 1.9), SHBG (8.2%; 95% CI: -4.2, 20.6), or testosterone (-0.8%; 95% CI: -13.6, 12.0). Compared to control, exercise plus diet did not significantly change estradiol (-6.3%; 95% CI: -16.3, 3.6), SHBG (8.8%; 95% CI: -4.0, 21.7), or testosterone (-5.3%; 95% CI: -18.0, 7.4). Bats have recently been identified as potential reservoir hosts for mammalian orthoreoviruses (MRVs) throughout Europe and China. Here we present the first evolutionary and biological characterization of bat-borne MRVs in North America, including phylogenomic analysis, in vitro relative infectivity in bat and other mammalian cell cultures, host cell receptor specificity, and epifluorescence microscopy of viral factory formation. Through genetic and phylogenetic comparisons, we show that two divergent MRV serotype 2 (T2) strains – isolated from a silver-haired bat (Lasionycteris noctivagans) and a big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus) from Pennsylvania, USA – provide an evolutionary link to an MRV strain (T2W) recovered from an 8-week-old infant who died in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in 1997. Objective: The Healthy Living and Eating After Cancer Trial demonstrated that a clinic‐based weight loss program reduced body weight, as compared with a waitlist control group, over 15 weeks. Here we report the impact of the weight loss intervention on health‐related quality‐of‐life outcomes at week 15, and maintenance of weight loss to week 30. Methods: This trial randomized cancer survivors of solid tumors and hematologic malignancies (breast cancer: 76.7%) to a 15‐week group‐based weight loss program (n = 30) or a waitlist control group (n = 30). Participants were not blinded to group assignment. Participants completed a variety of health‐related quality‐of‐life outcome measures at baseline and week 15. From week 15 to week 30, participants initially randomized to the weight loss program were followed with no additional intervention, and participants initially randomized to the waitlist control group commenced the weight loss program. Results: Over the 15 weeks, the weight loss program improved physical functioning (6.2 ± 2.9; p = 0.02; d = 0.31) and reduced insomnia symptoms (−17.1 ± 7.4; p = 0.03; d = −0.30) as measured by the EORTC QLQ‐C30, and sleep disturbance (−4.9 ± 1.6; p = 0.005; d = −0.40) as measured by PROMIS, compared to waitlist control. After a weight loss of 4.6 ± 3.9 kg, from week 15 to week 30, participants who were initially randomized to the weight loss program maintained their prior weight loss (+0.6 ± 3.5 kg) and participants who were initially randomized to the waitlist control group lost weight (−3.4 ± 2.9 kg; p < 0.001). Conclusions: In cancer survivors with overweight or obesity, a 15‐week clinic‐based weight loss program improved health‐related quality‐of‐life outcomes and produced sustained weight loss to week 30. Using diagnostic data and contemporary sampling efforts, we conducted surveillance for a diversity of pathogens, toxicants, and diseases of muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus). Between 1977 and 2019, 26 diagnostic cases were examined from Kansas and throughout the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic, USA. We identified multiple causes of mortality in muskrats, but trauma (8/26), Tyzzer's disease (5/6), and cysticercosis (5/26) were the most common. We also conducted necropsies, during November 2018—January 2019 Pennsylvania muskrat trapping season, on 380 trapper-harvested muskrat carcasses after the pelt was removed. Tissue samples and exudate were tested for presence of or exposure to a suite of pathogens and contaminants. Gastrointestinal tracts were examined for helminths. Intestinal helminths were present in 39.2% of necropsied muskrats, with Hymenolepis spp. (62%) and echinostome spp. (44%) being the most common Molecular testing identified a low prevalence of infection with Clostridium piliforme in the feces and Sarcocystis spp. in the heart. We detected a low seroprevalence to Toxoplasma gondii (1/380). No muskrats were positive for Francisella tularensis or Babesia spp. Cysticercosis was detected in 20% (5/26) of diagnostic cases and 15% (57/380) of our trapper-harvested muskrats. Toxic concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, lead, or mercury were not detected in tested liver samples. Copper, molybdenum, and zinc concentrations were detected at acceptable levels comparative to previous studies. Parasite intensity and abundance were typical of historic reports; however, younger muskrats had higher intensity of infection than older muskrats which is contradictory to what has been previously reported. A diversity of pathogens and contaminants have been reported from muskrats, but the associated disease impacts are poorly understood. Our data are consistent with historic reports and highlight the wide range of parasites, pathogens and contaminants harbored by muskrats in Pennsylvania. The data collected are a critical component in assessing overall muskrat health and serve as a basis for understanding the impacts of disease on recent muskrat population declines. Parameterizations of small‐scale mixing are important in modeling the behavior of the World Ocean. These microstructure mixing processes do not exist in isolation, however, and larger‐scale processes can affect their fluxes, which is an important consideration for general circulation models. We have developed a new pseudo‐spectral hydrodynamic model, the "Rocking Ocean Modeling Environment," which is able to simulate the effects of some large‐scale processes, such as shear and internal waves. The code induces a time‐dependent shear forcing across a small domain that can accurately resolve the micro‐scale. This configuration presents a challenge for modeling via Fourier‐based algorithms because the typical evolution of such a flow is incompatible with the periodic boundary conditions at the vertical extremities of the computational domain. This complication is addressed by reformulating the governing equations in a new, temporally varying "tilting" coordinate system associated with the background flow as has been done in the past in the field of homogenous turbulence. The code is applied to one such process which is known to show substantial differences in turbulent environments: salt fingers. We simulate salt fingers in the presence of constant and oscillating shear in order to quantify the mixing of heat and salt by these systems under the impacts of large‐scale internal waves. Generally, it is shown that the application of shear can reduce fluxes by a factor of 2 or 3 for typical amplitudes of near‐inertial waves and that the impact of shear decreases as the frequency of the applied shear increases. Plain Language Summary: This work presents a new fluid model designed to investigate how waves and turbulence in the ocean on large (>10 m) scales can affect mixing that occurs on small (∼1 cm) scales. The code is shown to perform well for a variety of tests and one particular application of this code is demonstrated. This application is a process known as salt fingering, and we show how this process can be affected by currents and waves in the ocean. Salt fingers occur in regions where warm and salty water exists above cooler and fresher water. This can happen in a large fraction of the ocean when the amount of evaporation exceeds the amount of precipitation and typically exists at a layer of the ocean where the temperature changes quickly with depth, known as the thermocline. These salt fingers can transport heat and salt vertically in the ocean. However, salt fingers are relatively small (a few centimeters in width) and can be easily disrupted by fluid motion, such as currents and waves. We show through a series of computational experiments involving steady and oscillating motions that the transport of heat and salt by these salt fingers can be easily halved. Background: Obesity is a chronic, relapsing, and progressive disease; it is associated with poor health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) in survivors of breast cancer. Methods: In this 2 × 2 factorial trial, 351 survivors of breast cancer with overweight or obesity were randomized to 1 of 4 treatment groups for 52 weeks: control, exercise alone, diet alone, or exercise plus diet. HRQOL end points were measured at baseline and at week 52 using the 36‐Item Medical Outcomes Survey‐Short Form (SF‐36). Repeated measures analysis of covariance quantified the estimated treatment difference (ETD). Results: At baseline, participants had a mean (SD) age of 59.4 years (8.7), body mass index of 34.0 kg/m2 (5.9), and 71 participants (20.2%) self‐reported fair or poor general health. After 52 weeks, compared with control, the exercise plus diet improved the physical health summary score (ETD: 5.39; 95% CI, 0.55‐10.22); exercise alone (ETD: –1.91; 95% CI, –6.60 to 2.79) and diet alone (ETD: 3.16; 95% CI, –1.52 to 7.83) did not change the physical health summary score. Compared with control, exercise alone (ETD: –0.27; 95% CI, –6.60 to 2.79), diet alone (ETD: 3.25; 95% CI, –1.41 to 7.91), and the exercise plus diet (ETD: 1.75; 95% CI, –2.90 to 6.39) did not change the mental health summary score. Aim: There is conflicting evidence concerning the ability of recent graduates to meet the standards required in exodontia to be independent practitioners. In particular, there is a lack of confidence in surgical extractions. This study evaluated Foundation Trainee's confidence levels in their oral surgery experience and the teaching of oral surgery in UK dental schools. Materials and Methods: Two separate studies were carried out, and the first was a survey to all foundation trainees in the Yorkshire and Humber Deanary in 2019 which analysed their oral surgery experience and confidence levels. The second study surveyed all Dental Schools in the UK with regard to their contact hours, assessment methods, instruments taught and number of extractions in oral surgery for their undergraduate programmes. Results: There was a response rate of 52% for the foundation trainees which showed that they were confident in performing non‐surgical extractions but lacked confidence with surgical extractions. There was a positive correlation between the amount of undergraduate experience and confidence levels in exodontia. The second survey which had a response rate of 71% showed variations in the numbers of hours taught for oral surgery, instruments taught and assessment methods, with the structured clinical operative test used more commonly. On average, 41 non‐surgical extractions were performed by students before graduation and two surgical extractions. Conclusion: There is a need to identify how oral surgery teaching can be improved in UK dental schools to ensure that foundation trainees are more confident and competent in both surgical and non‐surgical exodontia. Increased use of epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation (eSCS) for the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury (SCI) has highlighted the need for a greater understanding of the properties of reflex circuits in the isolated spinal cord, particularly in response to repetitive stimulation. Here, we investigate the frequency-dependence of modulation of short- and long-latency EMG responses of lower limb muscles in patients with SCI at rest. Single stimuli could evoke short-latency responses as well as long-latency (likely polysynaptic) responses. The short-latency component was enhanced at low frequencies and declined at higher rates. In all muscles, the effects of eSCS were more complex if polysynaptic activity was elicited, making the motor output become an active process expressed either as suppression, tonic or rhythmical activity. The polysynaptic activity threshold is not constant and might vary with different stimulation frequencies, which speaks for its temporal dependency. Polysynaptic components can be observed as direct responses, neuromodulation of monosynaptic responses or driving the muscle activity by themselves, depending on the frequency level. We suggest that the presence of polysynaptic activity could be a potential predictor for appropriate stimulation conditions. This work studies the complex behaviour of spinal circuits deprived of voluntary motor control from the brain and in the absence of any other inputs. This is done by describing the monosynaptic responses, polysynaptic activity, and its interaction through its input–output interaction with sustain stimulation that, unlike single stimuli used to study the reflex pathway, can strongly influence the interneuron circuitry and reveal a broader spectrum of connectivity. Arctic staircases mediate the heat transport from the warm water of Atlantic origin to the cooler waters of the Arctic mixed layer. For this reason, staircases have received much due attention from the community, and their heat transport has been well characterized for systems in the absence of external forcing. However, the ocean is a dynamic environment with large-scale currents and internal waves being omnipresent, even in regions shielded by sea ice. Thus, we have attempted to address the effects of background shear on fully developed staircases using numerical simulations. The code, which is pseudospectral, solves the governing equations for a Boussinesq fluid with temperature and salinity in a shearing coordinate system. We find that—unlike many other double-diffusive systems—the sheared staircase requires three-dimensional simulations to properly capture the dynamics. Our simulations predict shear patterns that are consistent with observations and show that staircases in the presence of external shear should be expected to transport heat and salt at least twice as efficiently as in the corresponding nonsheared systems. Collection of biological samples for DNA is necessary in a variety of disciplines including disease epidemiology, landscape genetics, and forensics. Quantity and quality of DNA varies depending on the method of collection or media available for collection (e.g., blood, tissue, fecal). Blood is the most common sample collected in vials or on Whatman Flinders Technology Associates (FTA) cards with short- and long-term storage providing adequate DNA for study objectives. The focus of this study was to determine if biological samples stored on Whatman FTA Elute cards were a reasonable alternative to traditional DNA sample collection, storage, and extraction. Tissue, nasal swabs, and ocular fluid were collected from white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus). Tissue samples and nasal swabs acted as a control to compare extraction and DNA suitability for microsatellite analysis for nasal swabs and ocular fluid extracted from FTA Elute cards. We determined that FTA Elute cards improved the extraction time and storage of samples and that nasal swabs and ocular fluid containing pigmented fluid were reasonable alternatives to traditional tissue DNA extractions. Magnetically-driven, planar shockless-compression experiments to multi-megabar pressures were performed on tantalum samples using a stripline target geometry. Free-surface velocity waveforms were measured in 15 cases; nine of these in a dual-sample configuration with two samples of different thicknesses on opposing electrodes, and six in a single-sample configuration with a bare electrode opposite the sample. Details are given on the application of inverse Lagrangian analysis (ILA) to these data, including potential sources of error. The most significant source of systematic error, particularly for single-sample experiments, was found to arise from the pulse-shape dependent free-surface reflected wave interactions with the deviatoric-stress response of tantalum. This could cause local, possibly temporary, unloading of material from a ramp compressed state, and thus multi-value response in wave speed that invalidates the free-surface to in-material velocity mapping step of ILA. By averaging all 15 data sets, a final result for the principal quasi-isentrope of tantalum in stress-strain was obtained to a peak longitudinal stress of 330 GPa with conservative uncertainty bounds of ±4.5% in stress. The development of strong and stiff lateral load-resisting systems (LLRS) is essential for mid-rise and high-rise timber buildings. On the other hand, within a seismic design philosophy, strength/stiffness and ductility/drift capacity typically appear as opposite target parameters, depending on the acceptable level of damage. For improved stiffness and strength, core-wall tubular structural forms commonly are used for taller reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. This paper presents an experimental study of a new type of LLRS in cross-laminated timber (CLT). A post-tensioned C-shaped CLT core-wall mainly using screwed connections was designed and tested under unidirectional and bidirectional cyclic loading. It was found that the mixed-angle screwed connection solution was the most effective. The highest partial composite action of 60%–70% was reached and the core-wall system stiffness at serviceability limit state increased more than four times compared with a decoupled test with only friction between the CLT panels. The (unbonded) post-tensioning technology provided strong and stiff core-wall base connections with recentering capability and small residual displacements. The experimental test results confirmed that significant system strength/stiffness and ductility/drift capacity can be achieved in a post-tensioned C-shaped CLT core-wall system with minimal damage through careful connection detailing. Skeletal scintigraphy is most performed in pediatric patients using the radiopharmaceutical 99mTc labelled methylene diphosphonate (99mTc-MDP). Reference biokinetic models for 99mTc-MDP indicate 50% of the administered activity is uniformly localized to the interior bone surfaces (trabecular and cortical regions), yet imaging data clearly show some preferential uptake to the epiphyseal growth plates of the long bones. To explore the dosimetric consequences of these regional activity concentrations, we have modified mesh-type computational phantoms of the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) reference pediatric series to explicitly include geometric models of the epiphyseal growth plates (2 mm in thickness) within the left/right, distal/proximal ends of the humeri, radii, ulnae, femora, tibia, and fibulae. Bone mineral activity from the ICRP Publication 128 biokinetic model for 99mTc-MDP (ICRP 2015) was then partitioned to the growth plates at values of 0.5%, 4.4%, 8.3%, 12.2%, 16.1%, and 20%. Radiation transport simulations were performed to compute 99mTc S-values and organ dose coefficients to the soft tissues and to bone site-specific regions of spongiosa. As the percentage of bone activity assigned to the growth plates was increased (from 0.5% to 20%), absorbed doses to the soft tissue organs, active bone marrow, bone endosteum (BE), as well as the detriment-weighted dose, were shown to decrease from their nominal values (no substantial growth plate activity), while epiphyseal plate self-doses increased. In the 15 year old male phantom, moving from 0.5% to 20% relative bone activity within the epiphyseal plates resulted in a 15% reduction in active marrow (AM) and BE dose, a 10% reduction in mean soft tissue and detriment-weighted dose, and a 6.3-fold increase in epiphyseal plate self-dose. In the newborn female phantom, we observed a 18% decrease in AM and BE dose, a 10% decrease in mean soft tissue dose, a 15% decrease in detriment-weighted dose, and 12.8-fold increase in epiphyseal plate self-dose. Increases (to 3 mm) and decreases (to 1 mm) in the assumed growth plate thickness of our models were shown to impact only the growth plate self-dose. Future work in differential quantification of 99mTc-MDP activity—growth plates versus other bone surfaces—is required to provide clinically realistic data on activity partitioning as a function of patient age, and perhaps skeletal site. Current guidelines for administered activity (AA) in pediatric nuclear medicine imaging studies are based on a 2016 harmonization of the 2010 North American Consensus guidelines and the 2007 European Association of Nuclear Medicine pediatric dosage card. These guidelines assign AA scaled to patient body mass, with further constraints on maximum and minimum values of radiopharmaceutical activity. These guidelines, however, are not formulated based upon a rigor-ous evaluation of diagnostic image quality. In a recent study of the renal cortex imaging agent 99mTc-DMSA (Li Y et al 2019), body mass-based dosing guidelines were shown to not give the same level of image quality for patients of differing body mass. Their data suggest that patient girth at the level of the kidneys may be a better morphometric parameter to consider when selecting AA for renal nuclear medicine imaging. The objective of the present work was thus to develop a dedicated series of computational phantoms to support image quality and organ dose studies in pediatric renal imaging using 99mTc-DMSA or 99mTc-MAG3. The final library consists of 50 male and female phantoms of ages 0 to 15 years, with percentile variations (5th to 95th) in waist circumference (WC) at each age. For each phantom, nominal values of kidney volume, length, and depth were incorporated into the phantom design. Organ absorbed doses, detriment-weighted doses, and stochastic risks were assessed using ICRP reference biokinetic models for both agents. In Monte Carlo radiation transport simulations, organ doses for these agents yielded detriment-weighted dose coefficients (mSv/MBq) that were in general larger than current ICRP values of the effective dose coefficients (age and WC-averaged ratios of eDW/e were 1.40 for the male phantoms and 1.49 for the female phantoms). Values of risk index (ratio of radiation-induced to natural background cancer incidence risk x 100) varied between 0.062 (newborns) to 0.108 (15-year-olds) for 99mTc-DMSA and between 0.026 (newborns) to 0.122 (15-year-olds) for 99mTc-MAG3. Using tallies of photon exit fluence as a rough surrogate for uniform image quality, our study demonstrated that through body region-of-interest optimization of AA, there is the potential for further dose and risk reductions of between factors of 1.5 to 3.0 beyond simple weight-based dosing guidance. We uniaxially and shocklessly compressed an additively manufactured aluminum alloy, laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) AlSi10Mg, to peak stresses ranging from 4.4 to 14.8 GPa at peak strain rates on the order of 10 6 s − 1 via a series of magnetic loading experiments to measure the principal isentrope, yield strength, and shear modulus as a function of material orientation and applied stress. We did not observe significant anisotropy in any of the measured quantities. We found that the principal isentrope, within the uncertainty and up to our peak stress, overlaps the material's Hugoniot. We measured yield strengths and shear moduli ranging from 0.28 to 0.81 GPa and 36 to 52 GPa, respectively. Background: The quantity and distribution of adipose tissue may be prognostic measures of mortality in colorectal cancer patients, and such associations may vary by patient sex.Methods: This cohort included 3262 stage I-III colorectal cancer patients. Visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissues were quantified using computed tomography. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality. Restricted cubic splines estimated statistical associations with two-sided P values.Results: Visceral adipose tissue was prognostic of mortality in a reverse L-shaped pattern (nonlinear P = .02); risk was flat to a threshold (∼260 cm2) then increased linearly. Subcutaneous adipose tissue was prognostic of mortality in a J-shaped pattern (nonlinear P < .001); risk was higher at extreme (<50 cm2) but lower at intermediate values (>50 to ≤560 cm2). Patient sex modified the prognostic associations between visceral adipose tissue (Pinteraction = .049) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (Pinteraction = .04) with mortality. Among men, visceral adiposity was associated with mortality in a J-shaped pattern (nonlinear P = .003), whereas among women, visceral adiposity was associated with mortality in a linear pattern (linear P = .008). Among men, subcutaneous adiposity was associated with mortality in an L-shaped pattern (nonlinear P = .01), whereas among women, subcutaneous adiposity was associated with mortality in a J-shaped pattern (nonlinear P < .001).Conclusions: Visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue were prognostic of mortality in patients with colorectal cancer; the shape of these associations were often nonlinear and varied by patient sex. These results offer insight into the potential biological mechanisms that link obesity with clinical outcomes in patients with cancer, suggesting that the dysregulated deposition of excess adiposity is prognostic of mortality. Urban environments are unique because fragments of natural or semi-natural habitat are embedded within a potentially permeable matrix of human-dominated areas, creating increased landscape and, potentially, habitat heterogeneity. In addition, urban areas can provide diet subsidies for wildlife species in the form of fruiting ornamental plants, trash, and domestic animals. Ecological opportunity in the forms of habitat and food heterogeneity are thought to be important mechanisms in maintaining individual specialization. Identifying which contexts, traits, and mechanisms determine the success or failure of individuals within an urban wildlife population could potentially provide predictions about which populations may succeed in human-dominated landscapes and which may experience local extinction. We used both scat and stable isotope analysis of whiskers to investigate the degree to which coyotes (Canis latrans) utilized anthropogenic subsidies and exhibited individual diet specialization across the urban-rural gradient in southern California. Land use surrounding scat and isotope sample locations was also evaluated to determine the effect of land cover on diet. Human food constituted a significant portion of urban coyote diet (22% of scats, 38% of diet estimated by stable isotope analysis). Domestic cats (Felis catus) and ornamental fruit and seeds were also important items in urban coyote diets. Consumption of anthropogenic items decreased with decreasing urbanization. In suburban areas, seasonality influenced the frequency of occurrence of anthropogenic subsidies with increased consumption in the dry season. The amount of altered open space (areas such as golf courses, cemeteries, and landscaped parks) nearby had a negative effect on the consumption of anthropogenic items in both urban and suburban areas. Contrary to our hypothesis, urban coyotes displayed reduced between-individual variation compared to suburban and rural coyotes. It is possible that the core urban areas of cities are so densely developed and subsidized that wildlife inhabiting these areas actually have reduced ecological opportunity. Suburban animals had the broadest isotopic niches and maintained similar individual specialization to rural coyotes. Wildlife in suburban areas still have access to relatively undisturbed natural areas while being able to take advantage of anthropogenic subsidies in neighboring residential areas. For two decades, the incidence and range of sarcoptic mange in black bears (Ursus americanus) in Pennsylvania has increased. The causative agent, Sarcoptes scabiei, can be directly or indirectly transmitted; therefore, data on environmental persistence is important for guiding management and public communications. The objective of this study was to determine the survival of S. scabiei at different temperatures. Full section skin samples and superficial skin scrapes were collected from bears immediately after euthanasia due to severe mange. After ~ 24 h on ice packs (shipment to lab), samples were placed in dishes at 0, 4, 18, or 30 °C and 60, 20, 12, and 25% relative humidity, respectively, and the percentage of mites alive, by life stage, was periodically determined. Humidity was recorded but not controlled. Temperature significantly affected mite survival, which was shortest at 0 °C (mostly ≤ 4 h) and longest at 4 °C (up to 13 days). No mites survived beyond 8 days at 18 °C or 6 days at 30 °C. Mites from full-thickness skin sections survived significantly longer than those from superficial skin scrapes. Adults typically survived longer than nymphs and larvae except at 30 °C where adults survived the shortest time. These data indicate that at cooler temperatures, S. scabiei can survive for days to over a week in the environment, especially if on host skin. However, these data also indicate that the environment is unlikely to be a long-term source of S. scabiei infection to bears, other wildlife, or domestic animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Previous work with the spatial iterated prisoner's dilemma has shown that the ability to respond to a partner's defection by simply "walking away" allows so-called walk away cooperators to outcompete defectors as well as cooperators that do not respond to defection. These findings are important because they suggest a relatively simple route by which cooperation can evolve. But it remains to be seen just how robust the walk away strategy is to ecologically important variables such as population density, strategic error, and offspring dispersal. The results of our simulation experiments show that the evolutionary success of walk away cooperators decreases with decreasing population density and/or with increasing error. This relationship is best explained by the ways in which population density and error jointly affect the opportunity cost of walking away. This opportunity cost also explains why naive cooperators regularly outcompete walk away cooperators in pair-wise competition, something not observed in previous studies. Our results further show that local offspring dispersal can inhibit the evolution of cooperation by negating the protection low population density affords the most vulnerable cooperators. Abstract Objectives Evaluate correlation between donor nerve semi-quantitative electromyography (sqEMG) and strength outcome in nerve transfer surgery. Methods Retrospective review of pre-operative donor nerve semi-quantitative neurophysiology and post-operative recipient muscle force after at least one-year follow-up. The semi-quantitative technique is the average motor unit number estimate associated with needle recorded interference patterns in the donor muscle (IP-AMUNE), which was correlated with hand-held manometry, standardized as a percent of the contralateral arm, using multivariable linear regression with backward selection. Results Twenty-eight nerve transfer cases were included. The correlation between the donor nerve IP-AMUNE and the recipient muscle strength was moderate to strong and highly significant (r = 0.67, p < 0.001). Medical Research Council (MRC) grading did not predict strength (p > 0.54). Conclusions IP-AMUNE is a good predictor of strength after nerve transfer surgery and should be considered in the evaluation and planning of patients undergoing nerve transfer to aid in donor nerve selection. Background: Physical activity is associated with a lower risk of disease recurrence among colon cancer patients. Circulating tumor cells (CTC) are prognostic of disease recurrence among stage I-III colon cancer patients. The pathways through which physical activity may alter disease outcomes are unknown, but may be mediated by changes in CTCs. Methods: Participants included 23 stage I-III colon cancer patients randomized into one of three groups: usual-care control, 150 min∙wk-1 of aerobic exercise (low-dose), and 300 min∙wk-1 of aerobic exercise (high-dose) for six months. CTCs from venous blood were quantified in a blinded fashion using an established microfluidic antibody-mediated capture device. Poisson regression models estimated the logarithmic counts of CTCs. Results: At baseline, 78% (18/23) of patients had ≥1 CTC. At baseline, older age (−0.12±0.06; P = 0.04), lymphovascular invasion (0.63±0.25; P = 0.012), moderate/poor histology (1.09±0.34; P = 0.001), body mass index (0.07±0.02; P = 0.001), visceral adipose tissue (0.08±0.04; P = 0.036), insulin (0.06±0.02; P = 0.011), sICAM-1 (0.04±0.02; P = 0.037), and sVCAM-1 (0.06±0.03; P = 0.045) were associated with CTCs. Over six months, significant decreases in CTCs were observed in the low-dose (−1.34±0.34; P<0.001) and high-dose (−1.18±0.40; P = 0.004) exercise groups, whereas no significant change was observed in the control group (−0.59±0.56; P = 0.292). Over six months, reductions in body mass index (−0.07±0.02; P = 0.007), insulin (−0.08±0.03; P = 0.014), and sICAM-1 (−0.07±0.03; P = 0.005) were associated with reductions in CTCs. The main limitations of this proof-of-concept study are the small sample size, heterogenous population, and per-protocol statistical analysis. Conclusion: Exercise may reduce CTCs among stage I-III colon cancer patients. Changes in host factors correlated with changes in CTCs. Exercise may have a direct effect on CTCs and indirect effects through alterations in host factors.
