© 2015 by The Society for Freshwater Science. Fire is a prevalent feature of many landscapes and has numerous and complex effects on geological, hydrological, ecological, and economic systems. In some regions, the frequency and intensity of wildfire have increased in recent years and are projected to escalate with predicted climatic and landuse changes. In addition, prescribed burns continue to be used in many parts of the world to clear vegetation for development projects, encourage desired vegetation, and reduce fuel loads. Given the prevalence of fire on the landscape, authors of papers in this special series examine the complexities of fire as a disturbance shaping freshwater ecosystems and highlight the state of the science. These papers cover key aspects of fire effects that range from vegetation loss and recovery in watersheds to effects on hydrology and water quality with consequences for communities (from algae to fish), food webs, and ecosystem processes (e.g., organic matter subsidies, nutrient cycling) across a range of scales. The results presented in this special series of articles expand our knowledge of fire effects in different biomes, water bodies, and geographic regions, encompassing aquatic population, community, and ecosystem responses. In this overview, we summarize each paper and emphasize its contributions to knowledge on fire ecology and freshwater ecosystems. This overview concludes with a list of 7 research foci that are needed to further our knowledge of fire effects on aquatic ecosystems, including research on: 1) additional biomes and geographic regions; 2) additional habitats, including wetlands and lacustrine ecosystems; 3) different fire severities, sizes, and spatial configurations; and 4) additional response variables (e.g., ecosystem processes) 5) over long (>5 y) time scales 6) with more rigorous study designs and data analyses, and 7) consideration of the effects of fire management practices and policies on aquatic ecosystems.

Ongoing climate change threatens the biodiversity of glacier‐fed river ecosystems worldwide through shifts in water availability and timing, temperature, chemistry, and channel stability. However, tropical glacier‐fed rivers have received little attention compared to those in temperate and Arctic biomes, despite their unique biodiversity potentially responding differently due to additional stress from higher altitude locations thus lower oxygen availability, diurnal freeze–thaw cycles, and annual monsoon rainfall disturbances. This study quantified aquatic biodiversity responses to decreasing glacier cover in the Cordillera Blanca range of the Peruvian Andes. Ten rivers were studied along a gradient of decreasing glacier cover in the Parón, Huaytapallana, and Llanganuco basins, with a specific focus on macroinvertebrates and physicochemical parameters in both the dry and wet seasons. We found higher temperatures, more stable and lower turbidity rivers as glacier cover decreased, which were related significantly to higher local diversity and lower β‐diversity. Analysis of similarity revealed significant differences in the macroinvertebrate community among rivers with high, medium, or low glacier cover, illustrating turnover from specialists to generalists as glacial influence decreased. Redundancy analysis demonstrated that there were more species found to prefer stable beds and water temperatures in medium and low glacier cover in a catchment rivers. However, certain taxa in groups such as Paraheptagyia, Orthocladiinae, Anomalocosmoecus, and Limonia may be adapted to high glacial influence habitats and at risk of glacier retreat. Although species composition was different to other biomes, the Cordillera Blanca rivers showed similar benthic macroinvertebrate biodiversity responses to glacier retreat, supporting the hypothesis that climate change will have predictable effects on aquatic biodiversity in mountain ranges worldwide. Eutrophication of freshwater ecosystems is a global problem, but restoration can be difficult due to ongoing problems relating to water pollution, sedimentary nutrient stores and altered aquatic biodiversity. Mitigation of Eutrophication is often conducted alongside transplantation of submerged macrophytes and dredging, but knowledge of ecosystem response to post‐dredging transplantation of submerged macrophytes is limited.We report a long‐term (2008–2018) in situ monitoring study to evaluate the effects of different restoration measures: dredging only (Dredged) and dredged with post‐transplantation of submerged macrophytes (Dredged with macrophytes) conducted in five subtropical eutrophic lakes, Taihu basin. Water and sediment nutrients, bloom‐forming algae Microcystis and macroinvertebrate were monitored every 2 years for each treatment and compared with reference areas (Control) established in unrestored parts of the same lake.Dredging only decreased sediment nutrients (e.g. carbon, phosphorus) significantly; however, this effect diminished about 5 years later. Dredged with macrophytes had a stronger, longer lasting positive effect on water quality than dredged alone. Disturbance caused by dredging (without macrophytes transplantation) decreased the biomass of Microcystis, while transplantation of macrophytes shortly after dredging did not contribute to the decreasing of Microcystis biomass. The biomass of Microcystis in Dredged with macrophytes areas was always similar to Control over the period of our monitoring.A positive effect of submerged macrophytes transplantation post‐dredging was found for macroinvertebrate abundance and diversity: Dredged with macrophytes areas had significantly higher macroinvertebrate biomass and richness than Dredged areas after 9 years' recovery. Macroinvertebrate richness in Dredged with macrophytes areas nearly doubled compared to Control, while Dredged areas were just restored to Control levels.Synthesis and applications: Our study provides an long‐term field monitoring with new findings about the benefits and caution of submerged macrophytes transplantation post‐dredging and the effect of partial restoration, which could inform eutrophic waterbody restoration schemes.
