This study examined the impact of Classworks® Individualized Learning math instruction on second-grade students performing below the 25th percentile in math. The research, conducted during the 2021-2022 school year, involved 1,367 students from 45 schools across seven districts. A quasi-experimental design compared 941 students who had any use of Classworks (treatment group) with 426 students who did not (comparison group). Students in both the treatment and comparison groups completed the Classworks Math Universal Screener assessments at the beginning and end of the school year. The study employed linear modeling with adjustments for clustering, baseline achievement, and district fixed effects. Results showed that Classworks users scored an average of 5.17 points higher on the spring math assessment compared to non-users, with an effect size of 0.13. Treatment group students engaged with the program for an average of 11 minutes per week over 30 instructional weeks. These findings suggest that Classworks Individualized Learning math instruction has a positive impact on the math performance for struggling second-grade students, even with modest time investment. Educators may consider implementing such personalized, technology-based interventions to support students performing below grade level in mathematics. Future research could explore the program's long-term effects and its impact on different student subgroups. Aggregating large-scale radiotherapy planning and delivery data is crucial for advancing radiation oncology research and improving clinical practice, yet challenges persist due to the diversity of treatment planning systems (TPS), record and verify (R&V) systems, and complex data formats lacking standardized retrieval methods. We developed a robust software framework that automates the collection and integration of multi-institutional radiotherapy data from diverse TPS and R&V systems. By utilizing the unidirectional references of DICOM objects, our framework reconstructs complete patient datasets starting from Radiotherapy Treatment Records (RTRECORDs), managing tasks such as data queries, transfers, verification, and logging. It effectively maps DICOM linkages between RTRECORDs, RTPLANs, RTDOSEs, RTSTRUCTs, planning images, registrations, and associated diagnostic images, incorporating custom modules for data conversion and comprehensive error handling. Implemented across multiple institutions using various systems$-$ including ARIA, Eclipse, MOSAIQ, RayStation, MIM, Pinnacle$-$ the framework successfully collected data from two clinics over an 11-year period, aggregating data from 6,022 patients and 13,871 treatment plans with a success rate of 99.76% and an average processing time of approximately 18 minutes per patient. Ongoing efforts are extending data collection to clinics lacking DICOM Query/Retrieve capabilities, demonstrating the framework's adaptability to various clinical environments. JWST/MIRI images have been used to study the Fourier transform power spectra (PS) of two spiral galaxies, NGC 628 and NGC 5236, and two dwarfs, NGC 4449 and NGC 5068, at distances ranging from 4 to 10 Mpc. The PS slopes on scales larger than 200 pc range from -0.6 at 21 microns to -1.2 at 5.6 microns, suggesting a scaling of region luminosity with size as a power law with index ranging from 2.6 to 3.2, respectively. This result is consistent with the size-luminosity relation of star-forming regions found elsewhere, but extending here to larger scales. There is no evidence for a kink or steepening of the PS at some transition from two-dimensional to three-dimensional turbulence on the scale of the disk thickness. This lack of a kink could be from large positional variations in the PS depending on two opposite effects: local bright sources that make the slope shallower and exponential galaxy profiles that make the slope steeper. The sources could also be confined to a layer of molecular clouds that is thinner than the HI or cool dust layers where PS kinks have been observed before. If the star formation layers observed in the near-infrared here are too thin, then the PS kink could be hidden in the broad tail of the JWST point spread function., Comment: 12 pages, 32 figures

Inductive qualitative methods have been a mainstay of education research for decades, yet it takes much time and effort to conduct rigorously. Recent advances in artificial intelligence, particularly with generative AI (GAI), have led to initial success in generating inductive coding results. Like human coders, GAI tools rely on instructions to work, and how to instruct it may matter. To understand how ML/GAI approaches could contribute to qualitative coding processes, this study applied two known and two theory-informed novel approaches to an online community dataset and evaluated the resulting coding results. We present a computational formulation for the approximate version of several variational inequality problems, investigating their computational complexity and establishing PPAD-completeness. Examining applications in computational game theory, we specifically focus on two key concepts: resilient Nash equilibrium, and multi-leader-follower games -- domains traditionally known for the absence of general solutions. In the presence of standard assumptions and relaxation techniques, we formulate problem versions for such games that are expressible in terms of variational inequalities, ultimately leading to proofs of PPAD-completeness.

This article describes condensation of the elements and use of condensation temperatures (Tcond) to interpret the volatility trend of the Earth. Major points are: (1) a listing of updated 50% Tcond for all natural elements and Pu at 1e-2 to 1e-8 bar pressure for solar composition matter. (2) The Tcond are mainly controlled by the Gibbs energy of condensation reactions and also by the Gibbs energy of ideal mixing if elements (compounds) condense in a solution. The Gibbs energy change of non-ideal solution (activity coefficients not equal to 1) is a secondary effect. (3) The theoretically correct relationship between Tcond and fraction condensed is derived from mass balance and chemical thermodynamic considerations. (4) The maximum amount of element condensed per 1/T, is at the inflection point in the logistic (sigmoid) curve for an element, which is also at (or close to) the 50% Tcond. (5) Plots of normalized elemental abundances versus 50% Tcond (volatility trends) are qualitative indicators of elemental fractionations due to volatility. (6) Volatility trend plots for average elemental abundances in CM, CO, CV, CR, H, L, LL, EH, EL chondrites show different trends for moderately and highly volatile elements, which may be linear, curved, a step function, or plateau. Comparison of three abundance sets for CM and CV chondrites shows trends depend on which elements are plotted, which data sources are used, and which temperature range is considered. (7) Proposed mechanisms for volatile element depletion in carbonaceous chondrites and the Earth are reviewed. Fokker-Planck equations (forward Kolmogorov equations) evolve probability densities in time from an initial condition. For distributions over the real line, these evolution equations can sometimes be transformed into dynamics over the incomplete zeroth and first moments. We call this perspective the Lorenz dynamics of the system after the Lorenz curve description of distributions of wealth. This offers the benefit of presenting the dynamics over a compact domain. The integral transformation is motivated and then stated for a general class of Fokker-Planck equations. Following this, the transformed equation is solved for the heat equation and some variants thereof. Finally, some equations arising from the application of kinetic theory to idealized economic systems are transformed and analyzed in this new light.

Planet engulfment has been identified as one of the mechanisms for enhancing lithium abundance in stars. However, comprehensive investigations into lithium signatures following such events remain limited. Stars born together, sharing a common origin and stellar characteristics, provide a unique opportunity to study these signatures and compare lithium abundances. We demonstrate that the distinctive signature of planet engulfment in lithium abundance is only discernible among highly similar stellar twins. We present lithium abundance measurements for 125 co-moving pairs of stars, representing the largest sample to date with a single, homogeneous assessment of high-precision lithium abundance. While lithium abundance enhancements in pairs showing planet engulfment signatures are within 0.35 dex, we find that even at fixed stellar parameters (temperature and age), the intrinsic scatter in lithium abundance is typically 0.35 dex for G/F dwarfs and can be as large as 0.6 dex for older and cooler stars due to internal stellar evolution processes. Since the planet engulfment signature from lithium can be masked by stellar intrinsic scatter, our findings raise questions about relying solely on lithium as an indicator for planet engulfment or attributing lithium-richness in stars primarily to planet engulfment events., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Let u be a word over the positive integers. Motivated in part by a question from representation theory, we study the centralizer set of u which is C(u) = {w | uw is Knuth-equivalent to wu}. In particular, we give various necessary conditions for w to be in C(u). We also characterize C(u) when u has few letters, when it has a single repeated entry, or when it is a certain type of decreasing sequence. We consider c_{n,m}(u), the number of w in C(u) of length n with max w at most m. We prove that for |u| = 1 the value of this function depends only on the relative sizes of u and m and not on their actual values. And for various u we use Stanley's theory of poset partitions to show that, for fixed n, c_{n,m}(u) is a polynomial in m with certain degree and leading coefficient. We end with various conjectures and directions for further research.

We introduce a dynamic model for complexity control (CC) between systems, represented by time series characterized by different temporal complexity measures, as indicated by their respective inverse power law (IPL) indices. Given the apparent straightforward character of the model and the generality of the result, we formulate a hypothesis based on the closeness of the scaling measures of the model to the empirical complexity measures of the human brain. CC is a proper model for describing the recent experimental results, such as the rehabilitation in walking arm in arm and the complexity synchronization effect. The CC effect can lead to the design of mutual-adaptive signals to restore the misaligned complexity of maladjusted organ networks or, on the other hand, to disrupt the complexity of a malicious system and lower its intelligent behavior., Comment: 12 pages

The high electron temperature in galaxy clusters ($>1\,$keV or $>10^7\,$K) leads to corrections at the level of a few percent in their thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect signatures. Both the size and frequency dependence of these corrections, which are known as relativistic temperature corrections, depend upon the temperature of the objects. In this work we exploit this effect to measure the average temperature of a stack of Compton-$y$ selected clusters. Specifically, we apply the "spectroscopic method" and search for the temperature that best fits the clusters' signal measured at frequencies from 30 to 545 GHz by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and Planck satellite. We measure the average temperature of clusters detected in the ACT maps to be $8.5\pm 2.4\,$keV, with an additional systematic error of comparable amplitude dominated by passband uncertainty. Upcoming surveys, such as the Simons Observatory and CMB-S4, have the potential to dramatically improve upon these measurements and thereby enable precision studies of cluster temperatures with millimeter observations. The principal goal of this paper is to pass all quantum probability formulas to the projective space associated to the complex Hilbert space of a given quantum system, providing a more complete geometrization of quantum theory. Quantum events have consecutive and conditional probabilities, which have been used in the author's previous work to clarify 'collapse' and to generalize the concept of entanglement by incorporating it into quantum probability theory. In this way all of standard textbook quantum theory can be understood as a geometric theory of projective subspaces without any special role for the zero-dimensional projective subspaces, which are also called pure states. The upshot is that quantum theory is the probability theory of projective subspaces, or equivalently, of quantum events. A crucial component of the high-contrast instrumental chain in astronomy is the wavefront sensor (WFS). A key property of this component is its sensitivities, which reflect its ability to efficiently use incoming photons to encode the phase aberrations. This paper introduces a new class of highly sensitive wavefront sensors that approach the fundamental sensitivity limits dictated by physics. Assuming a high Strehl regime, we define what linear operator is describing the ideal WFS that would achieve maximum sensitivity. We then show that there is a substantial similarity between this ideal WFS and the second-order ideal coronagraph. Leveraging the exhibited link between ideal wavefront sensing and coronagraphy, we propose a novel WFS concept based on high-performance coronagraphic architecture : the bivortex WFS. This sensor employs charge-2 vortex masks. Simulations for an ideal system demonstrate that this sensor achieves unprecedented sensitivity, even surpassing the highly sensitive Zernike WFS class (especially for low spatial frequencies), while paving the way for new high-contrast architectures integrating simultaneous sensing and coronagraphy.

Serving systems for Large Language Models (LLMs) improve throughput by processing several requests concurrently. However, multiplexing hardware resources between concurrent requests involves non-trivial scheduling decisions. Practical serving systems typically implement these decisions at two levels: First, a load balancer routes requests to different servers which each hold a replica of the LLM. Then, on each server, an engine-level scheduler decides when to run a request, or when to queue or preempt it. Improved scheduling policies may benefit a wide range of LLM deployments and can often be implemented as "drop-in replacements" to a system's current policy. In this work, we survey scheduling techniques from the literature and from practical serving systems. We find that schedulers from the literature often achieve good performance but introduce significant complexity. In contrast, schedulers in practical deployments often leave easy performance gains on the table but are easy to implement, deploy and configure. This finding motivates us to introduce two new scheduling techniques, which are both easy to implement, and outperform current techniques on production workload traces., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

The Zirconium (Z = 40) isotopic chain has attracted interest for more than four decades. The abrupt lowering of the energy of the first $2^+$ state and the increase in the transition strength B(E2; $2_1^\rightarrow 0_1^+$ going from $^{98}$Zr to $^{100}$Zr has been the first example of "quantum phase transition" in nuclear shapes, which has few equivalents in the nuclear chart. Although a multitude of experiments have been performed to measure nuclear properties related to nuclear shapes and collectivity in the region, none of the measured lifetimes were obtained using the Recoil Distance Doppler Shift method in the $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence mode where a gate on the direct feeding transition of the state of interest allows a strict control of systematical errors. This work reports the results of lifetime measurements for the first yrast excited states in $^{98-104}$Zr carried out to extract reduced transition probabilities. The new lifetime values in $\gamma\gamma$-coincidence and $\gamma$-single mode are compared with the results of former experiments. Recent predictions of the Interacting Boson Model with Configuration Mixing, the Symmetry Conserving Configuration Mixing model based on the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approach and the Monte Carlo Shell Model are presented and compared with the experimental data.

Here we present several use cases for using Generative AI (Gen AI) to improve systems engineering and cognitive knowledge management related to the future of astronomy from a culmination of working meetings and presentations as part of the Gen AI Task Group for the NASA Habitable Worlds Observatory (HWO) Science and Technology Architecture Review Team (START) AI/ML Working Group. Collectively, our group mission statement is "Where is the Human-in-the-loop as Gen AI systems become more powerful and autonomous?" with an emphasis on the ethical applications of Gen AI, guided by using these systems to remove drudgery from human work while simultaneously increasing opportunities for humans to experience more collective creativity and innovation. The HWO mission stands to benefit dramatically from generative models for different data types including text, time series/spectra, and image data. These cover a wide range of applications in science and engineering for HWO, including: mission development acceleration, data analysis and interpretation, enhancing imaging capabilities, anomaly detection, predictive modeling and simulation, data augmentation for machine learning, instrument calibration and optimization, public engagement and education, and assisting in mission planning. As an example, through sensitivity analysis of simulated exoplanet population science data sets of various generative model complexity, we can reverse engineer the measurement uncertainty requirements for HWO instruments to produce data that can constrain population models and thus inform HWO design requirements. This approach to HWO design is one example of a strategy that can ensure that HWO remains AI-ready. Through presenting herein a combination of visionary ideas balanced with grounded validated use case examples, we aim to support the development of a long-term strategy to keep HWO AI-ready as it moves forward., Comment: Lack of guidelines for submitting work that came out of the HWO START TAG working groups.

Acquiring accurate external respiratory data during functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) is challenging, prompting the exploration of machine learning methods to estimate respiratory variation (RV) from fMRI data. Respiration induces head motion, including real and pseudo motion, which likely provides useful information about respiratory events. Recommended notch filters mitigate respiratory-induced motion artifacts, suggesting that a bandpass filter at the respiratory frequency band isolates respiratory-induced head motion. This study seeks to enhance the accuracy of RV estimation from resting-state BOLD-fMRI data by integrating estimated head motion parameters. Specifically, we aim to determine the impact of incorporating raw versus bandpass-filtered head motion parameters on RV reconstruction accuracy using one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (1D-CNNs). At frequencies below 1\,Hz, fluctuations in atmospheric emission in the Chajnantor region in northern Chile are the primary source of interference for bolometric millimeter-wave observations. This paper focuses on the statistics of these fluctuations using measurements from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) and the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) water vapor radiometer. After introducing a method for separating atmospheric effects from other systematic effects, we present a direct measurement of the temporal outer scale of turbulence of $\tau_0\approx50$s corresponding to a spatial scale of $L_0\approx500$m. At smaller scales, the fluctuations are well described by the Kolmogorov 2/3 power law until, at yet smaller scales, the effects of beam smearing become important. As a part of this study, we present measurements of the atmosphere by the APEX radiometer over 20 years, focused on fluctuations in precipitable water vapor (PWV). We find that the 30-minute mean of the total PWV is not in general a robust estimator of the level of fluctuations. We show that the microwave frequency spectrum of these fluctuations is in good agreement with predictions by the \texttt{am} code for bands above 90~GHz. We then show that the variance of fluctuations in ACT's mm-wave bands correlates with the variance of fluctuations in PWV measured by APEX, even though the observatories are 6\,km apart and observe different lines of sight. Motivated by information geometry, a distance function on the space of stochastic matrices is advocated. Starting with sequences of Markov chains the Bhattacharyya angle is advocated as the natural tool for comparing both short and long term Markov chain runs. Bounds on the convergence of the distance and mixing times are derived. Guided by the desire to compare different Markov chain models, especially in the setting of healthcare processes, a new distance function on the space of stochastic matrices is presented. It is a true distance measure which has a closed form and is efficient to implement for numerical evaluation. In the case of ergodic Markov chains, it is shown that considering either the Bhattacharyya angle on Markov sequences or the new stochastic matrix distance leads to the same distance between models., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

A driving force behind the diverse applicability of modern machine learning is the ability to extract meaningful features across many sources. However, many practical domains involve data that are non-identically distributed across sources, and statistically dependent within its source, violating vital assumptions in existing theoretical studies. Toward addressing these issues, we establish statistical guarantees for learning general $\textit{nonlinear}$ representations from multiple data sources that admit different input distributions and possibly dependent data. Specifically, we study the sample-complexity of learning $T+1$ functions $f_\star^{(t)} \circ g_\star$ from a function class $\mathcal F \times \mathcal G$, where $f_\star^{(t)}$ are task specific linear functions and $g_\star$ is a shared nonlinear representation. A representation $\hat g$ is estimated using $N$ samples from each of $T$ source tasks, and a fine-tuning function $\hat f^{(0)}$ is fit using $N'$ samples from a target task passed through $\hat g$. We show that when $N \gtrsim C_{\mathrm{dep}} (\mathrm{dim}(\mathcal F) + \mathrm{C}(\mathcal G)/T)$, the excess risk of $\hat f^{(0)} \circ \hat g$ on the target task decays as $\nu_{\mathrm{div}} \big(\frac{\mathrm{dim}(\mathcal F)}{N'} + \frac{\mathrm{C}(\mathcal G)}{N T} \big)$, where $C_{\mathrm{dep}}$ denotes the effect of data dependency, $\nu_{\mathrm{div}}$ denotes an (estimatable) measure of $\textit{task-diversity}$ between the source and target tasks, and $\mathrm C(\mathcal G)$ denotes the complexity of the representation class $\mathcal G$. We review sulfur chemistry of the gas giant planets and their moons where sulfur compounds are observed. The major S-bearing gas in the upper atmospheres of the giant planets is H2S and is removed from their observable atmospheres by condensation into cloud layers (NH4SH on all four planets and additionally H2S ice on Uranus and Neptune). Any remaining H2S at higher altitudes is destroyed photochemically. Among the moons Io is the world dominated by sulfur. We summarize the sulfur cycle on Io and how pyrovolcanism is spreading sulfur across the Jovian system. Implantation of sulfur into icy surfaces of the other Galilean moons via magnetospheric transfer and radiolysis are major processes affecting the sulfur chemistry on their icy surfaces. On the icy worlds, we are literally looking at the top of the icebergs. Subsurface liquid salty bodies reveal themselves through cryovolcanism on Europa, Ganymede, and Enceladus, where salt deposits are indicated. Subsurface oceans are suspected on several other moons. We summarize the sulfur cycle for the icy Galilean moons. The occurrence of sulfates can be explained by salt exchange reactions of radiolytically produced H2SO4 with brine salts (carbonates and halides), or from a subsurface ocean that has become acidified by uptake of H2SO4 leaked from ice. In the primordial oceans of the moons that accreted with high ice rock ratios, sulfur is expected as sulfide and bisulfide anions and H2S in aqueous solution. Cosmochemical constraints suggest that pyrrhotite, tochilinite and green rusts could be important sulfide bearing compounds found with hydrous silicates such as serpentine, and magnetite on the sea floors. In N-C-rich worlds such as Titan, sulfides such as NH4SH and possibly thiazyl compounds could be important, and sulfates are unstable. We formulate a compounded random walk that is physically well defined on both finite and infinite domains, and samples space-dependent forces throughout jumps. The governing evolution equation for the walk limits to a space-fractional Fokker-Planck equation valid on bounded domains, and recovers the well known superdiffusive space-fractional diffusion equation on infinite domains. This compounded random walk, and its associated fractional Fokker-Planck equation, provides a major advance for modelling space-fractional diffusion through potential fields and on finite domains., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

We present the site quality of the Zadko Observatory, focusing on the brightness of the sky and the effects of the weather on the efficiency of the Observatory. We discuss these effects and their consequences for the scientific goals of the Observatory. Without surprise, the overall sky quality had decreased during the last decade. However, this decrease is mostly due to the weather pattern at the Observatory rather than the light pollution. The Zadko Observatory located approximately 70 kilometres north of Perth in the Yeal nature reserve within the Shire of Gingin, Western Australia, initially housed the 1.0 metre f/4 fast-slew Zadko Telescope which was commissioned in June 2008. Since the Zadko telescope has been in operation it has proven its worth by detecting numerous Gamma Ray Burst afterglows, two of these being the most distant 'optical transients' imaged by an Australian telescope. The Zadko telescope also contributed to the discovery of colliding neutron stars in 2017 capturing the imagination of the public. Another important use for the Zadko Telescope is the tracking and mapping of Space Debris which consist of all man-made objects, including their fragments or parts, other than active space vehicles larger than 10 microns and orbiting the Earth in outer space. The Zadko telescope forms part of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery (OzGrav). With a view to supporting ongoing scientific instrument upgrades and observatory maintenance it has proven critical to attract additional funding and seek out collaboration with international partners. In this article, we will focus on the administrative and technical details of the Observatory, focusing on the sustainability of the Observatory and its ongoing potential for future growth into an internationally recognized Space Surveillance Hub. We will review the evolution of the Observatory, from its early, single instrument state, to its current multi-telescope and multi-instrument capabilities. Scattering between individual charges and collective modes in materials governs fundamental phenomena such as electrical resistance, energy dissipation, switching between different phases, and ordering. The study of such scattering requires a simultaneous access to the ultrafast momentum-resolved dynamics of single-particle and collective excitations, which remains as an experimental challenge. Here, we demonstrate time- and momentum-resolved electron energy-loss spectroscopy, and apply it to graphite showing that large ($\Delta q\simeq$1.2~{\AA}$^{-1}$) photoexcited electron-hole (e-h) pockets in the band structure induce a renormalization of the collective in-plane and bulk plasmons that can be described quantitatively by invoking intra- and inter-valley scattering processes mediated by $E_{2g}$ and $A_{1}'$ phonon modes, which we directly observe by ultrafast electron diffraction and identify via ab initio calculations. Conversely, the photoexcitation of smaller e-h pockets ($\Delta q\simeq$0.7~{\AA}$^{-1}$) close to the K point of graphite results in the renormalization of in-plane plasmons, which can only be partially explained by phonon-mediated scattering and thermal expansion. We present a catalog of clouds identified from the $^{12}$CO (1--0) data of M83, which was observed using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) with a spatial resolution of $\sim$46 pc and a mass sensitivity of $\sim$10$^4$ $M_{\odot}$ (3 $\sigma$). The almost full-disk coverage and high sensitivity of the data allowed us to sample 5724 molecular clouds with a median mass of $\sim1.9$ $\times$ $10^5$ $M_{\odot}$, which is comparable to the most frequently sampled mass of Giant Molecular Clouds by surveys in the Milky Way. About 60 percent of the total CO luminosity in M83's disk arises from clouds more massive than 10$^6$ $M_{\odot}$. Such massive clouds comprise 16 percent of the total clouds in number and tend to concentrate toward the arm, bar, and center, while smaller clouds are more prevalent in inter-arm regions. Most $>10^6$ $M_{\odot}$ clouds have peak brightness temperatures $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$ above 2 K with the current resolution. Comparing the observed cloud properties with the scaling relations determined by Solomon et al. 1987 (S87), $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$$>2$ K clouds follow the relations, but $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$$<2$ K clouds, which are dominant in number, deviate significantly. Without considering the effect of beam dilution, the deviations would suggest modestly high virial parameters and low surface mass densities for the entire cloud samples, which are similar to values found for the Milky Way clouds by Rice et al. (2016) and Miville-Desch{\^e}nes et al. (2017). However, once beam dilution is taken into account, the observed $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ and $\Sigma$ for a majority of the clouds (mostly $T_{\mathrm{peak}}$ $<2$ K) can be potentially explained with intrinsic $\Sigma$ of $\sim$100 $M_{\mathrm{\odot}}\ \mathrm{pc}^{-2}$ and $\alpha_{\mathrm{vir}}$ of $\sim$1, which are similar to the clouds of S87., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Solution-based soft matter self-assembly (SA) promises unique materials properties from approaches including additive manufacturing/three-dimensional (3D) printing. We report direct ink writing derived, hierarchically porous transition metal nitride superconductors (SCs) and precursor oxides, structure-directed by Pluronics-family block copolymer (BCP) SA and heat treated in various environments. SCs with periodic lattices on three length scales show record nanoconfinement-induced upper critical field enhancements correlated with BCP molar mass, attaining values of 50 T for NbN and 8.1 T for non-optimized TiN samples, the first mapping of a tailorable SC property onto a macromolecular parameter. They reach surface areas above 120 m$^2$/g, the highest reported for compound SCs to date. Embedded printing enables the first BCP directed mesoporous non-self-supporting helical SCs. Results suggest that additive manufacturing may open pathways to mesoporous SCs with not only a variety of macroscopic form factors but enhanced properties from intrinsic, SA-derived mesostructures with substantial academic and technological promise.

The Gemini Planet Imager (GPI) is a high contrast imaging instrument that aims to detect and characterize extrasolar planets. GPI is being upgraded to GPI 2.0, with several subsystems receiving a re-design to improve its contrast. To enable observations on fainter targets and increase performance on brighter ones, one of the upgrades is to the adaptive optics system. The current Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor (WFS) is being replaced by a pyramid WFS with an low-noise electron multiplying CCD (EMCCD). EMCCDs are detectors capable of counting single photon events at high speed and high sensitivity. In this work, we characterize the performance of the HN\"u 240 EMCCD from N\"uv\"u Cameras, which was custom-built for GPI 2.0. Through our performance evaluation we found that the operating mode of the camera had to be changed from inverted-mode (IMO) to non-inverted mode (NIMO) in order to improve charge diffusion features found in the detector's images. Improving robot deployment is a central step towards speeding up robot-based automation in manufacturing. A main challenge in robot deployment is how to best place the robot within the workcell. To tackle this challenge, we combine two knowledge sources: robotic knowledge of the system and workcell context awareness of the user, and intersect them with an Augmented Reality interface. RobotGraffiti is a unique tool that empowers the user in robot deployment tasks. One simply takes a 3D scan of the workcell with their mobile device, adds contextual data points that otherwise would be difficult to infer from the system, and receives a robot base position that satisfies the automation task. The proposed approach is an alternative to expensive and time-consuming digital twins, with a fast and easy-to-use tool that focuses on selected workcell features needed to run the placement optimization algorithm. The main contributions of this paper are the novel user interface for robot base placement data collection and a study comparing the traditional offline simulation with our proposed method. Capturing real-world 3D spaces as point clouds is efficient and descriptive, but it comes with sensor errors and lacks object parametrization. These limitations render point clouds unsuitable for various real-world applications, such as robot programming, without extensive post-processing (e.g., outlier removal, semantic segmentation). On the other hand, CAD modeling provides high-quality, parametric representations of 3D space with embedded semantic data, but requires manual component creation that is time-consuming and costly. To address these challenges, we propose a novel solution that combines the strengths of both approaches. Our method for 3D workcell sketching from point clouds allows users to refine raw point clouds using an Augmented Reality (AR) interface that leverages their knowledge and the real-world 3D environment. By utilizing a toolbox and an AR-enabled pointing device, users can enhance point cloud accuracy based on the device's position in 3D space. We validate our approach by comparing it with ground truth models, demonstrating that it achieves a mean error within 1cm - significant improvement over standard LiDAR scanner apps., Comment: Published in IEEE RO-MAN 2024

The Earth's atmosphere is comprised of turbulent layers that result in speckled and blurry images from ground-based visible and infrared observations. Adaptive Optics (AO) systems are employed to measure the perturbed wavefront with a wavefront sensor (WFS) and correct for these distortions with a deformable mirror. Therefore, understanding and characterising the atmosphere is crucial for the design and functionality of AO systems. One parameter for characterizing the atmosphere is the atmospheric coherence time, which is a function of the effective wind velocity of the atmosphere. This parameter dictates how fast the AO system needs to correct for the atmosphere. If not fast enough, phenomena such as the wind butterfly effect can occur, hindering high-contrast coronographic imaging. This effect is a result of fast, strong, high-altitude turbulent layers. This paper presents two methods for estimating the effective wind velocity, using pseudo-open loop WFS slopes. The first method uses a spatial-temporal covariance map and the second uses the power spectral density of the defocus term. Motivated by recent work on the use of topological methods to study collections of rings between an integral domain and its quotient field, we examine spaces of subrings of a commutative ring, where these spaces are endowed with the Zariski or patch topologies. We introduce three notions to study such a space $X$: patch bundles, patch presheaves and patch algebras. When $X$ is compact and Hausdorff, patch bundles give a way to approximate $X$ with topologically more tractable spaces, namely Stone spaces. Patch presheaves encode the space $X$ into stalks of a presheaf of rings over a Boolean algebra, thus giving a more geometrical setting for studying $X$. To both objects, a patch bundle and a patch presheaf, we associate what we call a patch algebra, a commutative ring that efficiently realizes the rings in $X$ as factor rings, or even localizations, and whose structure reflects various properties of the rings in $X$.

For high-stakes online exams, it is important to detect potential rule violations to ensure the security of the test. In this study, we investigate the task of detecting whether test takers are looking away from the screen, as such behavior could be an indication that the test taker is consulting external resources. For asynchronous proctoring, the exam videos are recorded and reviewed by the proctors. However, when the length of the exam is long, it could be tedious for proctors to watch entire exam videos to determine the exact moments when test takers look away. We present an AI-assisted gaze detection system, which allows proctors to navigate between different video frames and discover video frames where the test taker is looking in similar directions. The system enables proctors to work more effectively to identify suspicious moments in videos. An evaluation framework is proposed to evaluate the system against human-only and ML-only proctoring, and a user study is conducted to gather feedback from proctors, aiming to demonstrate the effectiveness of the system., Comment: Accepted to HCOMP-24 Works-in-Progress and Demonstration track

Objective: To propose a mathematical model for applying Ionization Detail (ID), the detailed spatial distribution of ionization along a particle track, to proton and ion beam radiotherapy treatment planning (RTP). Approach: Our model provides for selection of preferred ID parameters (I_p) for RTP, that associate closest to biological effects. Cluster dose is proposed to bridge the large gap between nanoscopic I_p and macroscopic RTP. Selection of I_p is demonstrated using published cell survival measurements for protons through argon, comparing results for nineteen Ip: N_k; k = 2,3,...,10, the number of ionizations in clusters of k or more per particle, and F_k; k = 1,2,...,10, the number of clusters of k or more per particle. We then describe application of the model to ID-based RTP and propose a path to clinical translation. Main results: The preferred I_p were N_4 and F_5 for aerobic cells, N_5 and F_7 for hypoxic cells. Signifcant differences were found in cell survival for beams having the same LET or the preferred N_k. Conversely, there was no signi?cant difference for F_5 for aerobic cells and F_7 for hypoxic cells, regardless of ion beam atomic number or energy. Further, cells irradiated with the same cluster dose for these I_p had the same cell survival. Based on these preliminary results and other compelling results in nanodosimetry, it is reasonable to assert that I_p exist that are more closely associated with biological effects than current LET-based approaches and microdosimetric RBE-based models used in particle RTP. However, more biological variables such as cell line and cycle phase, as well as ion beam pulse structure and rate still need investigation. We give a refined description of the dominant spectrum of a non-local operator that models growth and equal mitosis of cells. More precisely we look at the spectrum in half planes at the right hand side of the first accumulation point of eigenvalues and give criteria on the weight of weighted $L^1$ spaces for this spectrum to be made of explicit simple eigenvalues. The method relies on a high order long time asymptotic expansion of the solutions to the associated evolution equation obtained in [Zaidi, van Brunt, Wake, Proc. A, R. Soc. Lond., 2015] combined with a Weyl theorem taken from [Mischler, Scher, Ann. Inst. Henri Poincar\'e, Anal. Non Lin\'eaire, 2016].

We present an analysis of a coin-tossing problem posed by Daniel Litt which has generated some popular interest. We demonstrate a recursive identity which leads to relatively simple formulas for the excess number of wins for one player over the other together with its increments as the number of coin tosses increases.

Let e_k(x_1,...,x_l) be an elementary symmetric polynomial and let mu = (mu_1,...,mu_l) be an integer partition. Define pre_k(mu) to be the partition whose parts are the summands in the evaluation e_k(mu_1,...,mu_l). The study of such partitions was initiated by Ballantine, Beck, and Merca who showed (among other things) that pre_2 is injective as a map on binary partitions of n. In the present work we derive a host of identities involving the sequences which count the number of parts of a given value in the image of pre_2. These include generating functions, explicit expressions, and formulas for forward differences. We generalize some of these to d-ary partitions and explore connections with color partitions. Our techniques include the use of generating functions and bijections on rooted partitions. We end with a list of conjectures and a direction for future research., Comment: 21 pages

Group IV GeSn double-heterostructure (DHS) lasers offer unique advantages of a direct bandgap and CMOS compatibility. However, further improvements in laser performance have been bottlenecked by limited junction properties of GeSn through conventional epitaxy and wafer bonding. This work leverages semiconductor grafting to synthesize and characterize optically pumped ridge edge-emitting lasers (EELs) with an AlGaAs nanomembrane (NM) transfer-printed onto an epitaxially grown GeSn substrate, interfaced by an ultrathin Al2O3 layer. The grafted AlGaAs/GeSn DHS lasers show a lasing threshold of 11.06 mW at 77 K and a maximum lasing temperature of 130 K. These results highlight the potential of the grafting technique for enhancing charge carrier and optical field confinements, paving the way for room-temperature electrically injected GeSn lasers., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures. The W. M. Keck Observatory Archive (KOA) has released the Observers Data Access Portal (ODAP), a web-application that delivers astronomical data from the W. M. Keck Observatory to the scheduled program's principal investigator and their collaborators anywhere in the world in near real-time. Data files and their associated metadata are streamed to a user's desktop machine moments after they are written to disk and archived in KOA. The ODAP User Interface is built in React and uses the WebSocket protocol to stream data between KOA and the user. We conduct a systematic search for astrophysical transients using data from the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). The data were taken from 2017 to 2022 in three frequency bands spanning 77 GHz to 277 GHz. In this paper we present a pipeline for transient detection using single observation maps where each pixel of a map contains one observation with an integration time of approximately four minutes. We find 34 transient events at 27 unique locations. All but two of the transients are associated with Galactic stars and exhibit a wide range of properties. We also detect an event coincident with the classical nova, YZ Ret and one event consistent with a flaring active galactic nucleus. We notably do not detect any reverse shock emission from gamma ray bursts, a non-detection which is in tension with current models., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, 10 tables. The 23-24 April 2023 double-peak (SYM-H intensities of -179 and -233 nT) intense geomagnetic storm was caused by interplanetary magnetic field southward component Bs associated with an interplanetary fast-forward shock-preceded sheath (Bs of 25 nT), followed by a magnetic cloud (MC) (Bs of 33 nT), respectively. At the center of the MC, the plasma density exhibited an order of magnitude decrease, leading to a sub-Alfvenic solar wind interval for ~2.1 hr. Ionospheric Joule heating accounted for a significant part (~81%) of the magnetospheric energy dissipation during the storm main phase. Equal amount of Joule heating in the dayside and nightside ionosphere is consistent with the observed intense and global-scale DP2 (disturbance polar) currents during the storm main phase. The sub-Alfvenic solar wind is associated with disappearance of substorms, a sharp decrease in Joule heating dissipation, and reduction in electromagnetic ion cyclotron wave amplitude. The shock/sheath compression of the magnetosphere led to relativistic electron flux losses in the outer radiation belt between L* = 3.5 and 5.5. Relativistic electron flux enhancements were detected in the lower L* < 3.5 region during the storm main and recovery phases. Equatorial ionospheric plasma anomaly structures are found to be modulated by the prompt penetration electric fields. Around the anomaly crests, plasma density at ~470 km altitude and altitude-integrated ionospheric total electron content are found to increase by ~60% and ~80%, with ~33% and ~67% increases in their latitudinal extents compared to their quiet-time values, respectively., Comment: manuscript accepted for publication through JGR: Space Physics

As mass-losing asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars evolve to planetary nebulae (PNe), the mass outflow geometries transform from nearly spherical to extreme aspherical. The physical mechanisms governing this transformation are widely believed to be linked to binarity and the associated production of disks and fast jets during transitional (post-AGB) evolutionary stages. We are carrying out a systematic ALMA survey ($P$re-planet$A$ry $N$ebulae high-angular-res$O$lution su$R$vey with $A$L$MA$ or PANORAMA) of a representative sample of bipolar and multipolar post-AGB objects. We have obtained high angular-resolution (0".1-0".4) observations of the CO(3--2) and/or 6--5 emission in order to probe the spatio-kinematic structure of the collimated outflows and the central disk/torii. The results are remarkable, generally showing the presence of bipolar or multipolar high-velocity outflows, dense toroidal waists, and in one case, a geometrically-thin circular ring around the central bipolar nebula. A high degree of point-symmetry characterizes the morphology of the mass ejecta. In this contribution, we present these and other highlights from our survey. We aim to use 2D/3D radiative transfer modeling in order to derive accurate outflow momenta, masses and mass-loss rates for our sample, and build hydrodynamical models that can explain the observed spatio-kinematic structures. These results will then be used to distinguish between different classes of PN-shaping binary interaction models.

LLMs have shown remarkable capabilities, but precisely controlling their response behavior remains challenging. Existing activation steering methods alter LLM behavior indiscriminately, limiting their practical applicability in settings where selective responses are essential, such as content moderation or domain-specific assistants. In this paper, we propose Conditional Activation Steering (CAST), which analyzes LLM activation patterns during inference to selectively apply or withhold activation steering based on the input context. Our method is based on the observation that different categories of prompts activate distinct patterns in the model's hidden states. Using CAST, one can systematically control LLM behavior with rules like "if input is about hate speech or adult content, then refuse" or "if input is not about legal advice, then refuse." This allows for selective modification of responses to specific content while maintaining normal responses to other content, all without requiring weight optimization. We release an open-source implementation of our framework.

The Zernike wavefront sensor (ZWFS) stands out as one of the most sensitive optical systems for measuring the phase of an incoming wavefront, reaching photon efficiencies close to the fundamental limit. This quality, combined with the fact that it can easily measure phase discontinuities, has led to its widespread adoption in various wavefront control applications, both on the ground but also for future space-based instruments. Despite its advantages, the ZWFS faces a significant challenge due to its extremely limited dynamic range, making it particularly challenging for ground-based operations. To address this limitation, one approach is to use the ZWFS after a general adaptive optics (AO) system; however, even in this scenario, the dynamic range remains a concern. This paper investigates two optical configurations of the ZWFS: the conventional setup and its phase-shifted counterpart, which generates two distinct images of the telescope pupil. We assess the performance of various reconstruction techniques for both configurations, spanning from traditional linear reconstructors to gradient-descent-based methods. The evaluation encompasses simulations and experimental tests conducted on the Santa cruz Extreme Adaptive optics Lab (SEAL) bench at UCSC. Our findings demonstrate that certain innovative reconstruction techniques introduced in this study significantly enhance the dynamic range of the ZWFS, particularly when utilizing the phase-shifted version.

Wireless electromagnetic sensing is a passive, non-destructive technique for measuring physical and chemical changes through permittivity or conductivity changes. However, the readout is limited by the sensitivity of the materials, often requiring complex sampling, particularly in the GHz range. We report capacitive dielectric temperature sensors based on polydimethylsiloxne (PDMS) loaded with 10 vol% of inexpensive, commercially available conductive fillers including copper powder (Cu), graphite powder (GP) and milled carbon fibre powder (CF). The sensors are tested in the range of 20{\deg}C to 110{\deg}C, with enhanced sensitivity from 20 to 60{\deg}C, and relative response of up to 85.5% at 200 MHz for CF loaded capacitors. Additionally, we demonstrate that operating frequency influences the relative sensing response by as much as 15.0% in loaded composite capacitors. Finally, we demonstrate the suitability of PDMS-CF capacitors as a sensing element in wirelessly coupled chipless resonant coils tuned to 6.78 MHz with a readout response, in the resonant frequency of the sensor. The wireless readout of the PDMS-CF chipless system exhibited an average sensitivity of 0.38 %{\deg}C-1 which is a 40x improvement over a pristine PDMS-based capacitive sensor and outperforms state of the art frequency-domain radio frequency (RF) temperature sensors including carbon-based composites at higher loadings. Exploiting the high sensitivity, we interrogate the sensor wirelessly using a low-cost and portable open-source NanoVNA demonstrating a relative response in the resonant frequency of the reader coil of 48.5%, with the response in good agreement with the instrumentation-grade vector network analyzers (VNAs), demonstrating that the sensors could be integrated into an inexpensive and portable measurement setup that does not rely on specialty equipment or highly trained operators., Comment: Main body 24 pages, 8 figures, one table. Ramanujan, in his famous first letter to Hardy, claimed a very precise estimate for the number of integers that can be written as a sum of two squares. Far less well-known is that he also made further claims of a similar nature for the non-divisibility of the Ramanujan tau-function for certain primes. In this survey, we provide more historical details and also discuss related later developments. Plasma detachment involves interactions of the plasma with impurities and neutral particles, leading to significant losses of plasma power, momentum, and particles. Accurate mapping of plasma emissivity in the divertor and X-point region is essential for assessing the relationship between particle flux and radiative detachment. The recently validated InfraRed Video Bolometer (IRVB) diagnostic, in MAST-U enables this mapping with higher spatial resolution than more established methods like resistive bolometers. In previous preliminary work, the evolution of radiative detachment was characterised in L-mode (power entering the scrape-off layer, PSOL ~0.4MW). With a conventional divertor the inner leg consistently detached ahead of the outer leg, and radiative detachment preceded particle flux detachment. This work presents results also from the third MAST-U experimental campaign, fuelled from the low field side instead of the high field side, including Ohmic and beam heated L-mode shots (with a power exiting the core up to PSOL ~1-1.5MW). The radiation peak moves upstream from the target at lower upstream densities than the ion target flux roll-over (typically considered the detachment onset), while the inner leg detaches before the outer one. The movement of the radiation is in partial agreement with the expectations from the DLS model, predicting a sudden shift from the target to the X-point. The energy confinement is found to be related to detachment, but there seems to be some margin between the radiation on the inner leg reaching the X-point and confinement being affected, a beneficial characteristic if it could be extrapolated to future reactors. For increasing PSOL the particle flux roll over is almost unaffected, while radiative detachment occurs at higher density in both legs, but much higher on the outer, suggesting an uneven distribution of the power exiting the core., Comment: Submitted to Nuclear Materials and Energy

We present a joint analysis of the CMB lensing power spectra measured from the Data Release 6 of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope and Planck PR4, cross-correlations between the ACT and Planck lensing reconstruction and galaxy clustering from unWISE, and the unWISE clustering auto-spectrum. We obtain 1.5% constraints on the matter density fluctuations at late times parametrised by the best constrained parameter combination $S_8^{\rm 3x2pt}\equiv\sigma_8 (\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.4}=0.815\pm0.012$. The commonly used $S_8\equiv\sigma_8 (\Omega_m/0.3)^{0.5}$ parameter is constrained to $S_8=0.816\pm0.015$. In combination with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) measurements we find $\sigma_8=0.815\pm 0.012$. We also present sound-horizon-independent estimates of the present day Hubble rate of $H_0=66.4^{+3.2}_{-3.7} \,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ from our large scale structure data alone and $H_0=64.3^{+2.1}_{-2.4}\,\mathrm{km}\,\mathrm{s}^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$ in combination with uncalibrated supernovae from Pantheon+. Using parametric estimates of the evolution of matter density fluctuations, we place constraints on cosmic structure in a range of high redshifts typically inaccessible with cross-correlation analyses. Combining lensing cross- and auto-correlations, we derive a 3.3% constraint on the integrated matter density fluctuations above $z=2.4$, one of the tightest constraints in this redshift range and fully consistent with a $\Lambda$CDM model fit to the primary CMB from Planck. Combining with primary CMB observations and using the extended low redshift coverage of these combined data sets we derive constraints on a variety of extensions to the $\Lambda$CDM model including massive neutrinos, spatial curvature, and dark energy. We find in flat $\Lambda$CDM $\sum m_\nu<0.12$ eV at 95% confidence using the LSS data, BAO measurements from SDSS and primary CMB observations., Comment: 30 pages, 15 figures, to be submitted to PRD, comments welcome
