Let $n>m\geqslant 1$ be integers with $n+m\geqslant 4$ even. We prove the existence of Maass forms with large sup norms on anisotropic ${\rm O}(n,m)$, by combining a counting argument with a new period relation showing that a certain orthogonal period on ${\rm O}(n,m)$ distinguishes theta lifts from ${\rm Sp}_{2m}$. This generalizes a method of Rudnick and Sarnak in the rank one case, when $m = 1$. Our lower bound is naturally expressed as a ratio of the Plancherel measures for the groups ${\rm O}(n,m)$ and ${\rm Sp}_{2m}(\mathbb{R})$, up to logarithmic factors, and strengthens the lower bounds of our previous paper for such groups. In the case of odd-dimensional hyperbolic spaces, the growth exponent we obtain improves on a result of Donnelly, and is optimal under the purity conjecture of Sarnak.

We prove the Mixing Conjecture of Michel--Venkatesh for the class group action on Heegner points of large discriminant on compact arithmetic surfaces attached to maximal orders in rational quaternion algebras. The proof is conditional on the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis, and when the division algebra is indefinite we furthermore assume the Ramanujan conjecture. We obtain a Weyl law with power savings for the universal families of cuspidal automorphic representations, ordered by analytic conductor, of $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, as well as for Hecke characters over any number field. The embedding of a torus into an inner form of PGL(2) defines an adelic toric period. A general version of Duke's theorem states that this period equidistributes as the discriminant of the splitting field tends to infinity. In this paper we consider a torus embedded diagonally into two distinct inner forms of PGL(2). Assuming the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis (and some additional technical assumptions), we show simultaneous equidistribution as the discriminant tends to infinity, with an effective logarithmic rate. We study the limiting behavior of Maass forms on Benjamini-Schramm convergent sequences of compact quotients of ${\rm SL}_d(\mathbb{R})/{\rm SO}(d)$, $d\ge 3$, whose spectral parameter stays in a fixed window. We prove a form of Quantum Ergodicity in this level aspect which extends results of Le Masson and Sahlsten to the higher rank case.

Let $F$ be a number field and $n\geqslant 1$ an integer. The universal family is the set $\mathfrak{F}$ of all unitary cuspidal automorphic representations on ${\rm GL}_n$ over $F$, ordered by their analytic conductor. We prove an asymptotic for the size of the truncated universal family $\mathfrak{F}(Q)$ as $Q\rightarrow\infty$, under a spherical assumption at the archimedean places when $n\geqslant 3$. We interpret the leading term constant geometrically and conjecturally determine the underlying Sato--Tate measure. Let $\pi$ and $\pi_0$ be unitary cuspidal automorphic representations. We prove log-free zero density estimates for Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions of the form $L(s,\pi\times\pi_0)$, where $\pi$ varies in a given family and $\pi_0$ is fixed. These estimates are unconditional in many cases of interest; they hold in full generality assuming an average form of the generalized Ramanujan conjecture. We consider applications of these estimates related to mass equidistribution for Hecke-Maass forms, the rarity of Landau-Siegel zeros of Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions, the Chebotarev density theorem, and $\ell$-torsion in class groups of number fields., Comment: 53 pages. Let $G$ be an anisotropic semisimple group over a totally real number field $F$. Suppose that $G$ is compact at all but one infinite place $v_0$. In addition, suppose that $G_{v_0}$ is $\mathbb{R}$-almost simple, not split, and has a Cartan involution defined over $F$. If $Y$ is a congruence arithmetic manifold of non-positive curvature associated to $G$, we prove that there exists a sequence of Laplace eigenfunctions on $Y$ whose sup norms grow like a power of the eigenvalue.

We establish the transition behavior of Jacquet-Whittaker functions on split semi-simple Lie groups. As a consequence, we show that for certain finite volume Riemannian manifolds, the local bound for normalized Laplace eigenfunctions does not hold globally., Comment: 55 pages, 3 figures. We prove a non-vanishing result for families of $\GL_n\times\GL_n$ Rankin-Selberg $L$-functions in the critical strip, as one factor runs over twists by Hecke characters. As an application, we simplify the proof, due to Luo, Rudnick, and Sarnak, of the best known bounds towards the Generalized Ramanujan Conjecture at the infinite places for cusp forms on $\GL_n$. A key ingredient is the regularization of the units in residue classes by the use of an Arakelov ray class group.

We extend to an arbitrary number field the best known bounds towards the Ramanujan conjecture for the groups GL(n), n=2, 3, 4. We specify sufficient conditions for the square modulus of the local parameters of a family of GL(n) cusp forms to be bounded on average. These conditions are global in nature and are at present satisfied for n less than or equal to 4. We establish zero-free regions tapering as an inverse power of the analytic conductor for Rankin-Selberg L-functions on GL(n) x GL(n'). Such zero-free regions are equivalent to commensurate lower bounds on the edge of the critical strip, and in the case of $L(s,f x f~), on the residue at s=1. As an application we show that a cuspidal automorphic representation on GL(n) is determined by a finite number of its Dirichlet series coefficients, and that this number grows at most polynomially in the analytic conductor., Comment: In this final version of this paper, soon to be published in this form in the American Journal of Math, I have corrected some definitions concerning the analytic conductor and addressed some minor problems involving ramification in the final section
