This work reports on the development and numerical implementation of the linear electromagnetic gyrokinetic (GK) model in a tokamak flux-tube geometry using a moment approach based on the expansion of the perturbed distribution function on a velocity-space Hermite-Laguerre polynomials basis. A hierarchy of equations of the expansion coefficients, referred to as the gyro-moments (GM), is derived. We verify the numerical implementation of the GM hierarchy in the collisionless limit by performing a comparison with the continuum GK code GENE, recovering the linear properties of the ion-temperature gradient, trapped electron, kinetic ballooning, and microtearing modes, as well as the collisionless damping of zonal flows. The present investigation reveals the ability of the GM approach to describe fine velocity-space scale structures appearing near the trapped and passing boundary and kinetic effects associated with parallel and perpendicular particle drifts. In addition, the effects of collisions are studied using advanced collision operators, including the GK Coulomb collision operator. The main findings are that the number of GMs necessary for convergence decreases with plasma collisionality and is lower for pressure gradient-driven modes, such as in H-mode pedestal regions, compared to instabilities driven by trapped particles and magnetic gradient drifts often found in the core. The accuracy of approximations often used to model collisions (relative to the GK Coulomb operator) is studied, showing differences between collision operator models that increase with collisionality and electron temperature gradient in the case of TEM. The present linear analysis demonstrates that the GM approach efficiently describes the plasma dynamics for typical parameters of the tokamak boundary, ranging from the low-collisionality banana H-mode to the high-collisionality Pfirsch-Schl\"uter conditions.

Local nonlinear gyrokinetic simulations of tokamak plasmas demonstrate that turbulent eddies can extend along magnetic field lines for hundreds of poloidal turns when the magnetic shear is very small. By accurately modeling different field line topologies (e.g. low-order, almost rational, or irrational safety factor), we show that the parallel self-interaction of such "ultra long" eddies can dramatically reduce heat transport. This reveals novel strategies to improve confinement, constitutes experimentally testable predictions, and illuminates past observations of internal transport barriers.

Global gradient driven GENE gyrokinetic simulations are used to investigate TCV plasmas with negative triangularity. Considering a limited L-mode plasma, corresponding to an experimental triangularity scan, numerical results are able to reproduce the actual transport level over a major fraction of the plasma minor radius for a plasma with $\delta_{\rm LCFS}=-0.3$ and its equivalent with standard positive triangularity $\delta$. For the same heat flux, a larger electron temperature gradient is sustained by $\delta<0$, in turn resulting in an improved electron energy confinement. Consistently with the experiments, a reduction of the electron density fluctuations is also seen. Local flux-tube simulations are used to gauge the magnitude of nonlocal effects. Surprisingly, very little differences are found between local and global approaches for $\delta>0$, while local results yield a strong overestimation of the heat fluxes when $\delta<0$. Despite the high sensitivity of the turbulence level with respect to the input parameters, global effects appear to play a crucial role in the negative triangularity plasma and must be retained to reconcile simulations and experiments. Finally, a general stabilizing effect of negative triangularity, reducing fluxes and fluctuations by a factor dependent on the actual profiles, is recovered.

Organ-specific, targeted Field-of-View (FoV) Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) inserts are viable solutions for a number of imaging tasks where whole-body PET/MRI systems lack the necessary sensitivity and resolution. To meet the required PET detector performance of these systems, high count-rates and effective spatial resolutions on the order of a few mm, a novel two-axis patterned reflector foil pixelated scintillator crystal array design is developed and its proof-of-concept illustrated in-silico with the Monte Carlo radiation transport modelling toolkit Geant4. It is shown that the crystal surface roughness and phased open reflector cross-section patterns could be optimised to maximise either the PET radiation detector's effective spatial resolution, or count rate before event pile up. In addition, it was illustrated that these two parameters had minimal impact on the energy and time resolution of the proposed PET radiation detector design. Finally, it is shown that a PET radiation detector with balance performance could be constructed using ground crystals and phased open reflector cross-section pattern corresponding to the middle of the tested range.

This paper presents the current state of the global gyrokinetic code ORB5 as an update of the previous reference [Jolliet et al., Comp. Phys. Commun. 177 409 (2007)]. The ORB5 code solves the electromagnetic Vlasov-Maxwell system of equations using a PIC scheme and also includes collisions and strong flows. The code assumes multiple gyrokinetic ion species at all wavelengths for the polarization density and drift-kinetic electrons. Variants of the physical model can be selected for electrons such as assuming an adiabatic response or a ``hybrid'' model in which passing electrons are assumed adiabatic and trapped electrons are drift-kinetic. A Fourier filter as well as various control variates and noise reduction techniques enable simulations with good signal-to-noise ratios at a limited numerical cost. They are completed with different momentum and zonal flow-conserving heat sources allowing for temperature-gradient and flux-driven simulations. The code, which runs on both CPUs and GPUs, is well benchmarked against other similar codes and analytical predictions, and shows good scalability up to thousands of nodes.

We describe the design and performance of the near-infrared (1.51--1.70 micron), fiber-fed, multi-object (300 fibers), high resolution (R = lambda/delta lambda ~ 22,500) spectrograph built for the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). APOGEE is a survey of ~ 10^5 red giant stars that systematically sampled all Milky Way populations (bulge, disk, and halo) to study the Galaxy's chemical and kinematical history. It was part of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey III (SDSS-III) from 2011 -- 2014 using the 2.5 m Sloan Foundation Telescope at Apache Point Observatory, New Mexico. The APOGEE-2 survey is now using the spectrograph as part of SDSS-IV, as well as a second spectrograph, a close copy of the first, operating at the 2.5 m du Pont Telescope at Las Campanas Observatory in Chile. Although several fiber-fed, multi-object, high resolution spectrographs have been built for visual wavelength spectroscopy, the APOGEE spectrograph is one of the first such instruments built for observations in the near-infrared. The instrument's successful development was enabled by several key innovations, including a "gang connector" to allow simultaneous connections of 300 fibers; hermetically sealed feedthroughs to allow fibers to pass through the cryostat wall continuously; the first cryogenically deployed mosaic volume phase holographic grating; and a large refractive camera that includes mono-crystalline silicon and fused silica elements with diameters as large as ~ 400 mm. The dynamics of electron-plasma waves are described at arbitrary collisionality by considering the full Coulomb collision operator. The description is based on a Hermite-Laguerre decomposition of the velocity dependence of the electron distribution function. The damping rate, frequency, and eigenmode spectrum of electron-plasma waves are found as functions of the collision frequency and wavelength. A comparison is made between the collisionless Landau damping limit, the Lenard-Bernstein and Dougherty collision operators, and the electron-ion collision operator, finding large deviations in the damping rates and eigenmode spectra. A purely damped entropy mode, characteristic of a plasma where pitch-angle scattering effects are dominant with respect to collisionless effects, is shown to emerge numerically, and its dispersion relation is analytically derived. It is shown that such a mode is absent when simplified collision operators are used, and that like-particle collisions strongly influence the damping rate of the entropy mode., Comment: 23 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication on Journal of Plasma Physics

Local gyrokinetic simulations solve the gyrokinetic equations with homogeneous background gradients, typically using a doubly periodic domain in the (x,y) plane (i.e. perpendicular to the field line). Spatial Fourier representations are almost universal in local gyrokinetic codes, and the wavevector-remap method was introduced in [Hammett et. al., Bull Am Phys Soc VP1 136, (2006)] as a simple method for expressing the local gyrokinetic equations with a background shear flow in a Fourier representation. Although extensively applied, the wavevector-remap method has not been formally shown to converge, and suffers from known unphysicality when the solutions are plotted in real space [Fox et. al. PPCF 59, 044008]. In this work, we use an analytic solution in slab geometry to demonstrate that wavevector-remap leads to incorrect smeared non-linear coupling between modes. We derive a correct, relatively simple method for solving local gyrokinetics in Fourier space with a background shear flow, and compare this to the wavevector-remap method. This allows us to show that the error in wavevector-remap can be seen as an incorrect rounding in wavenumber space in the nonlinear term. By making minor modifications to the nonlinear term, we implement the corrected wavevector-remap scheme in the GENE[25] code and compare results of the original and corrected wavevector-remap for standard nonlinear benchmark cases. Certain physical phenomena are impacted by the errors in the original remap scheme, and these numerical artefacts do not reduce as system size increases: that is, original wavevector-remap scheme does not converge to the correct result.

We present a portable platform, called PIC_ENGINE, for accelerating Particle-In-Cell (PIC) codes on heterogeneous many-core architectures such as Graphic Processing Units (GPUs). The aim of this development is efficient simulations on future exascale systems by allowing different parallelization strategies depending on the application problem and the specific architecture. To this end, this platform contains the basic steps of the PIC algorithm and has been designed as a test bed for different algorithmic options and data structures. Among the architectures that this engine can explore, particular attention is given here to systems equipped with GPUs. The study demonstrates that our portable PIC implementation based on the OpenACC programming model can achieve performance closely matching theoretical predictions. Using the Cray XC30 system, Piz Daint, at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre (CSCS), we show that PIC_ENGINE running on an NVIDIA Kepler K20X GPU can outperform the one on an Intel Sandybridge 8-core CPU by a factor of 3.4.

Collisional effects can play an essential role in the dynamics of plasma waves by setting a minimum damping rate and by interfering with wave-particle resonances. Kinetic simulations of the effects of electron-ion pitch angle scattering on Electron Plasma Waves (EPWs) are presented here. In particular, the effects of such collisions on the frequency and damping of small-amplitude EPWs for a range of collision rates and wave phase velocities are computed and compared with theory. Both the Vlasov simulations and linear kinetic theory find the direct contribution of electron-ion collisions to wave damping is about a factor of two smaller than is obtained from linearized fluid theory. To our knowledge, this simple result has not been published before. Simulations have been carried out using a grid-based (Vlasov) approach, based on a high-order conservative finite difference method for discretizing the Fokker-Planck equation describing the evolution of the electron distribution function. Details of the implementation of the collision operator within this framework are presented. Such a grid-based approach, which is not subject to numerical noise, is of particular interest for the accurate measurements of the wave damping rates., Comment: 44 pages, 11 figures

We performed an experimental study to determine the pixel recovery time of various Multi Pixel Photon Counters (MPPCs) in order to characterize their rate capability and double-hit resolution. The recovery time constant and its dependence on the operating voltage has been evaluated by measuring the photosensor response to two consecutive laser pulses with varying relative time differences of a few ns (2-3 ns) up to some 100 ns using a waveform analysis technique. A Monte Carlo simulation tool is being developed to model the MPPC recovery process and interpret experimental data. In this context, the influence of after-pulsing, cross-talk and dark-noise on the recovery process can be studied.

The barrel time-of-flight detector for the PANDA experiment at FAIR is foreseen as a Scintillator Tile (SciTil) Hodoscope based on several thousand small plastic scintillator tiles read-out with directly attached Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). The main tasks of the system are an accurate determination of the time origin of particle tracks to avoid event mixing at high collission rates, relative time-of-flight measurements as well as particle identification in the low momentum regime. The main requirements are the use of a minimum material amount and a time resolution of $\sigma < 100\,\mathrm{ps}$. We have performed extensive optimization studies and prototype tests to prove the feasibility of the SciTil design and finalize the R&D phase. In a 2.7 GeV/c proton beam at Forschungszentrum J\"ulich a time resolution of about 80 ps has been achieved using SiPMs from KETEK and Hamamatsu with an active area of $3\times3\,\mathrm{mm^2}$. Employing the Digital Photon Counter from Philips a time resolution of about 30 ps has been reached.

The barrel time-of-flight (TOF) detector for the PANDA experiment at FAIR in Darmstadt is planned as a scintillator tile hodoscope (SciTil) using 8000 small scintillator tiles. It will provide fast event timing for a software trigger in the otherwise trigger-less data acquisition scheme of PANDA, relative timing in a multiple track event topology as well as additional particle identification in the low momentum region. The goal is to achieve a time resolution of sigma ~ 100 ps. We have conducted measurements using organic scintillators coupled to Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM). The results are encouraging such that we are confident to reach the required time resolution., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

With the newly gained interest in the time of flight method for positron emission tomography (TOF-PET), many options for pushing the time resolution to its borders have been investigated. As one of these options the exploitation of the Cherenkov effect has been proposed, since it allows to bypass the scintillation process and therefore provides almost instantaneous response to incident 511keV annihilation photons. Our simulation studies on the yield of Cherenkov photons, their arrival rate at the photon detector and their angular distribution reveal a significant influence by Cherenkov photons on the rise time of inorganic scintillators - a key-parameter for TOF in PET. A measurement shows the feasibility to detect Cherenkov photons in this low energy range.

Several types of Silicon Photomultipliers were exposed to short pulsed laser light (~ 30 ps FWHM) with its intensity varying from single photon to well above the number of microcells of the device. We observed a significant deviation of the output of SiPMs from the expected behavior although such response curve is considered to be rather trivial. We also noticed that the output exceeds the maximum expected pulse height, which should be defined as the total number of pixels times the single photon pulse height. At the highest light intensity (~ 500 times the number of pixels) that we tested, the signal output reached up to twice the maximum theoretical pulse height, and still did not fully saturate.

A prototype of a position sensitive photo-detector with 5.6 x 5.6 cm2 detection area readout with 64 Hamamatsu MPPCs (S10931-100P) with 3 x 3 mm2 active area each has been built and tested. The photo-sensors are arranged in a 8 x 8 array with a quadratic mirror light guide on top. The module is currently readout by in-house developed preamplifier boards but employing existing ASIC chips optimized for SiPM readout is also planned. Such a device is one of the candidates to be used for photon detection in the PANDA DIRC detectors.
